Hey everybody! Episode 145 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with Michal Scheffler. Michal was introduced to me by our mutual friend Marta (who I interviewed in episode 16). Michal has led a very fascinating and full life. He was a DJ for many years and holds two degrees in psychology. His interest in consciousness led him to Latin America and ayahuasca where he spent time with different indigenous groups such as the Huni Kuin, Yawanawa, Shuar, as well as the Santo Daime church. We spoke about this journey and then what led him to other teachers such as the Colombian taitas, Andean traditions, and the Tubu nation of the Colombian Amazon. We spoke about the power of the word, storytelling, his journey into fatherhood, his involvement in the Imago community, and a lot more. I think Michal's wisdom is very apparent and it comes through his word and presence. I was really happy to sit down and speak with Michal and hear his wisdom and I trust you all will gain much from him as well. Also if you wait until the end, Michal sings one of his songs that came to him when calling in his son, on the Andean-Amazonian story of Origin. As always, to support this podcast, get early access to shows, bonus material, and Q&As, check out my Patreon page below. Enjoy!“Michal Scheffler (Sanken Koshi) is the founder and leader of IMAGO Community, a spiritual organization formally established in Brazil and USA, yet present across the Americas.IMAGO stewards an altar that bridges the ancestral tools and wisdom of the Amazon and Andes into the new time. While spending the last 11 years immersed in studying indigenous wisdom traditions, passing through a wide variety of diets and initiations led by the teachers of the jungle and the mountains, he predominantly trained in Brazil and Colombia. The core of his offering is expressed through the weaving of the traditional chants of the Yawanawa nation with the ritual based on the geometry of word, song, story and dance. While being guided by the teachings of the Law of Origin, Sanken Koshi has also walked a more formal path of university study. He carries two degrees in psychology and specializes in community building. He has observed that cultivating supportive community provides the integrity to create lasting shifts and benefit the individual process.Fascinated by the reprogramming of consciousness, he adds a subtle academic approach to support the evolution and long-term benefits of the individuals and the collective.”To learn more about or contact Michal, visit his website at: https://www.imagocommunity.org/To view the recent documentary, Sacred Tobacco, about my work, visit: https://youtu.be/KB0JEQALI_wIf you enjoy the show, it's a big help if you can share it via social media or word of mouth. Check the website here: http://enlites.com/   Dr. Elizabeth Pillsworth is Professor of Anthropology at the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at California State University, Fullerton. Her research questions include patterns of mate preferences, mate choice, sexuality, gender, romantic love, and reproduction. Her research projects include studies with U.S. populations and 15 years of fieldwork with an indigenous hunter-horticultural population in Amazonian Ecuador.   In this episode, we explore the evolutionary anthropology of partner choice, parenthood, mating systems, and gender. We start by talking about the Shuar people in South America, and we explore topics like their gender norms and how they have changed over the past few decades; partner choice and marital practices; parent-offspring conflict in partner choice; and the influence of female choice and parental choice in the evolution of mate preferences. We then talk about the evolution of paternal investment and the role of fathers. We discuss coupling and human mating systems. Finally, we talk about the difference between sex and gender, and how gender roles change across time. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BERNARDO SEIXAS, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ANTON ERIKSSON, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. #ecuador #folklore Today we are back in the book of Ecuadorian folklore written down by Mario Conde. A big thank you to him for letting me record these stories. In the first story, we learn about the origin of biting insects. In the second story, from deep in the amazon, we learn about how the Shuar women learned to grow crops. They also care deeply about people and want to see marginalized voices not be silenced through discrimination. Also, they know that having two women as hosts will drive jerks who care more about who is talking than what is said crazy. So if you want to learn about cool voices, vocal discrimination, and how young women often lead language change, go and give them a listen. Listener Shoutout: Zalec (Xa-Lets) Slovenia. From Wikipedia- Žalec was attested in written sources as Saxenburc and Sachsenwelde in 1182 (and as Saschenvelde in 1232 and Sachsenfelde in 1256). The medieval German names are based on folk etymology from the Slovene name, probably the genitive of the plural form *Žalci. This in turn was based on the personal name *Zal and would mean 'descendants of Žal'. In modern German the settlement was known as Sachsenfeld. Abraham Burickson, a design expert with over 20 years of experience, thinks so. He wants to change the way we think about design to create new possibilities in the workplace and beyond.Abraham Burickson is an author, speaker, and design expert with more than two decades of experience in exploring experience design. In this challenging exploration of wisdom for 21st century healers, we confront the challenges of professional burnout and the rise of artificial intelligence. This introspective journey begins with a question posed to me by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama i.e.: “Do I have a good heart?”. His question challenged me to consider the importance of a heart-based connection in healing and steers us toward a critical examination of the consequences of a healthcare system built on a bedrock of scientific materialism. Please join me as I  discuss the significance of an 'education of the heart' in contrast to an 'education of the intellect.' We traverse indigenous wisdom, delve into a conversation between Chief Mountain Lake of the Taos Pueblo tribe and Carl Jung, and consider the role of radical authentic compassion in healing. We explore the concept of a 'noetic education of the heart,' and call upon the wisdom of contemplative practitioners across time including Daniel Wachapa, a renowned shaman of the Shuar tribe, and the inspiring words of Mahatma Gandhi, Rumi, Krishnamurti, William Blake, and Thomas Merton and others. We consider how we can unite heart and mind to create a more meaningful future for healers. We turn to the wise words of Thomas Berry, discuss the dangers of a soulless future, and emphasize the importance of becoming active participants in our evolutionary journey.

Author and former “Economic Hit Man” John Perkins joins Tim to talk about his New York Times best-selling book that's now become a classic. That book is, “Confessions of an Economic Hit Man: China's EHM Strategy, Ways to Stop the Global Takeover.” He just released an updated version of the book that covers the tactics that China, the U.S. and other major powers have used to wage economic “warfare” in 2023. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/Economic_Hit_Man_auphonic.mp3 For the most part, if I were to talk to you about the world's super powers, you might think I'm talking about armies. Nuclear warheads.  The war machine.  But in 2023, more than ever, the term “super power” may better be described as the countries with the most economic power. Over the decades, the United States, China, Russia and other smaller countries, mostly from the West, have exerted influence through economic means. But make no mistake, economic warfare brings with it its own forms of brutality. That's what will be talking about today with our guest John Perkins. He's been on the front lines of this and has some stories to tell. He describes his job as that of an economic hit man. Economic Hit Man (EHM) John Perkins discusses his new book and how the Chinese have appropriated the EHM model for global takeover. He argues that the use of the EHM model by both the Anglosphere and Beijing is creating a death economy. He sees the New Cold War as a race to disaster. However, China's model is different, it's got a great growth story to tell, and it doesn't impose draconian conditions like the West does. He discusses meeting luminaries such as Nursultan Nazarbayev and Sergey Glazyev and how colonial resentment is growing against the U.S. as Washington loses hegemony and China takes over. But this is all leading to a global death economy and we need to change the system. He says the spirit of tobacco is protective, cleansing, grounding, as well as transformative. Yachaks (elder wisdom holders, teachers) use fresh or dried tobacco leaves, liquid tobacco infusions, and tobacco smoke (never inhaled) to connect with ancestral spirits, and to heal their patients with profound universal energies. Flavio shares the wisdom of his ancestors and what the prophecy of the grandfathers tell us.Late in the 19th Century, Ayuy Yu (Spirit of the Palm), Flavio Santi's grandfather and leader of his clan in the Shuar tribe, made an ancestral pilgrimage from the Huasaga River in Peru along the forested mountains up through Ecuador to the Putumayo River in Colombia, at that time called Puturuna: ‘People of the Kapok'.  Puturuna was an intercultural meeting place of knowledge exchange and spiritual teaching.  Along this route, which could take years to complete, the generations of Ayuy Yu's people had planted sacred wayusa plants, as guides, titles, and places of ceremony.  The Shuar people drink wayusa tea in the pre-dawn each day, to strengthen the dreams of the people, and of the forest.  Some of these trees along the route are now 700 years old.See more at www.lauralee.com

Constructed sometime during the 5th or 6th century AD large slabs that form gateways and curiously cut stones are all that remain of this once wondrous construction. Local legends from the native people of Bolivia still revere Puma Punku as the place where the world began. Another legend, held by the native Shuar people of Ecuador, places the birthplace of humanity within a system of caves set within the Andes mountains. Since the 1960's explorers of these caves have reported finding treasure troves of gold and mysterious artifacts within the extensive system of caverns. In 1976 a well provisioned and well staffed expedition set out to locate the source of these reports. They're primary concern was a set of metal plaques and sheets, said to be among the treasures, that may have had printed on them the history of a previously unknown advanced civilization.

The indomitable Shuar of the Amazon--reputed to be the only tribe in the Americas that has never been conquered--have lived as warriors, hunters, cultivators, and healers for generations. Even in today's acquisitive, often wasteful world they defend their rainforests and sustainable ways of life and offer their philosophy of love, joy, and hope. The Shuar share their practices of shapeshifting, "dreaming the world," and ecstatic sex.  They explain the interdependence of humans and the environment, their formula for peace and balance, and their faith in arutam, the life-giving spirit of nature that allows each of us to transform ourselves.John Perkins' insider's view leads him to crisis of conscience--to the realization that he must devote himself to work which will foster a world-wide awareness of the sanctity of indigenous peoples, their cultures, and their environments. Perkins' books demonstrate how the age-old shamanic techniques of some of the world's most primitive peoples have sparked a revolution in modern concepts about healing, the subconscious, and the powers each of us has to alter individual and communal reality.  John advises corporations, executives, and entrepreneurs on ways to make the transition from a Death Economy (exploiting resources that are declining at accelerating rates) to a Life Economy (cleaning up pollution, recycling, and other technologies that create regenerative life-styles and economies)From the Archives: This live interview was recorded on August 31, 2001 on the nationally syndicated radio program, hosted by Laura Lee . We live in an era when nearly every governor, state congressperson, or mayor supports maximum economic growth.  It doesn't matter what party you are from – or whether you support lower taxes or more social programs. Economic growth covers up all sins. Increasingly, it does not matter what country you are from. Economic growth is promoted as the way forward, the way to becoming more prosperous, the way to becoming a more “developed” nation. But economic growth is not the answer. In the words of Oren Lyons, we are acting like jockeys, whipping our horses to go faster and faster, unaware that the finish line is a brick wall.  How do we get people to understand: We cannot grow infinitely on a finite planet. How do we get people to understand that without fertile soil, clean air and water, all life is endangered, including human life. When will we remember that humans are made of light, air, water, and earth – that what we do to the elements we do to ourselves?  Why has the Western developed world – ever since the industrial revolution – been relentlessly pursuing progress? Why do we put our short-term economic goals first while ignoring the despoilation of the planet? It is not out of malice. It is not entirely out of fear, racism, or greed. It is more that we don't know a different way. We had a dream – a belief that increased goods and services made for a higher standard of living – and that was all that mattered. We have been chasing that dream ever since. In our dream, we don't count our blessings. What we have now is insufficient. We want more – the more the better, and the faster we get there and the more convenient the better.  Fortunately, my two honored guests know this is not the only way to live. They have met people who have another dream and it has changed the way they live. All over the world, Indigenous peoples carry a dream that sees all of creation as our relatives – a dream that respects the right of everything to exist. A dream that sees a way to live life differently, a way to perceive differently, a way to look at the world in a joyful, ecstatic manner – a way to be fully alive!  What will it take to change our dream?  How do we dance and sing a new reality into being? Join us as we delve into this with John Perkins and Bill Pfeiffer.  BIOS Bill Pfeiffer aka “Sky Otter” is the founder of Sacred Earth Network (SEN) which continues to implement leading edge visions for over 25 years. In that time, Bill has made Russia a second home having traveled there 44 times assisting the environmental and indigenous movements through SEN. This has given him a rare cross-cultural perspective. He has also led hundreds of spiritual ecology workshops, including men's and breath work.  He has 25 years of experience in Re-evaluation Counseling and Vipassana meditation, and has undergone extensive training with Siberian shamans. Bill has partnered with and designed experiential workshops with Joanna Macy, John Perkins, Llyn Roberts, Cathy Pedevillano, and John Seed. He has also spent much time in the US Southwest learning about Native medicine ways and the crucial importance of the petroglyphs and pictographs. His  book, “Wild Earth, Wild Soul: A Manual for an Ecstatic Culture” has been met with high acclaim. I've read the book and reviewed it for Amazon. The first 50 pages alone are an important summary of Western civilization and what needs to change. John Perkins, a kindred spirit, wrote the Foreword. John Perkins began his career as a “Chief Economist” at a major international consulting firm, advising the World Bank, United Nations, IMF, U.S. Treasury Department, Fortune 500 corporations, and countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. He worked directly with heads of state and CEOs of major companies. He wrote about all this in his first book with the provocative title “Confessions of an Economic Hit Man” – one of the most eye-opening true stories you can ever read to find out how the world really operates, and of John's role in creating that, which he came to regret. The book was on the NY times best seller list for 73 weeks. John has lectured at Harvard, Oxford, and more than 50 other universities around the world. He has been featured on ABC, NBC, CNN, NPR, A&E, the History Channel, Time, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Cosmopolitan, Elle, Der Spiegel, and many other publications, as well as in numerous documentaries including “The End of Poverty?”, “Zeitgeist Addendum”, and “Apology of an Economic Hit Man”. John was was moved to be a founder and board member of Dream Change and The Pachamama Alliance, tremendous nonprofit organizations devoted to establishing a world that future generations will want to inherit. It is this work that has led to special recognition = such as the Lennon Ono Grant for Peace, and Rainforest Action Network Challenging Business As Usual Award. Economic Hit Man and his other books: “New Confessions of an Economic Hit Man”, “Touching the Jaguar – The World is As You Dream It”, “Psychonavaigation”, “Spirit of the Shuar”,  and “Secret History of the American Empire” have sold more than two million copies. Touching the Jaguar (2020) tells the story of John's journey from Amazonian shaman to economic hit man and then social/environmental activist.  The New Confessions of an Economic Hit Man (2016), a follow-up to the classic New York Times bestseller, brings the story of economic hit men and jackal assassins up to date and chillingly home to the U.S. It goes on to provide practical strategies for each of us to transform the failing global death economy into a regenerative life economy.
