Isabella Ardell is a kind and lovely legend I think everyone should invite to join their podcast for an episode. She is a magazine owner, jewelry maker and started sewing at the age of 7 (!!) In this episode, we deep dived talking about her creative path, what's her favourite part about being an artist and how moving out and adulthood as a "newbie" is hard to manage. As two publishers were at the same place, we also touched on the topic of printing, focusing on zines and books, and how important it is that artists understand and support each other as parts of society still need time getting our POV and understanding which impact they could make on an artist's life with sharing and purchasing their art. Speaking of which, you can find Isabella's jewelry, magazine issues, stickers and textiles such as tote bags, pillows & more on isabellaardell.com and you can follow her on social media @isabellaardell / @ardellmagazine and on TikTok as well :) Enjoyed listening to this episode? Alyse has edited many docs, including THIS IS CONGO, PARADISE LOST 3: PURGATORY and the HBO series I'LL BE GONE IN THE DARK about the Golden State killer and the late Michelle McNamara's search for justice. The work of the editor often goes unsung, but great storytelling comes from taking the hours and hours of footage shot for a documentary, and putting it together in just the right way to make it impactful and compelling. B., Ardell, J. L., Shivkumar, K. Abstract: Cardiac function is under exquisite intrinsic cardiac neural control. Neuroablative techniques to modulate control of cardiac function are currently being studied in patients, albeit with variable and sometimes deleterious results. Recognizing the major gaps in our understanding of cardiac neural control, we sought to evaluate neural regulation of impulse initiation in the sinoatrial node as an initial discovery step. Here, we report an in-depth, multi-scale structural and functional characterization of the innervation of the sinoatrial node (SAN) by the right atrial ganglionated plexus (RAGP) in porcine and human hearts. Combining intersectional strategies including tissue clearing, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural techniques, we have delineated a comprehensive neuroanatomic atlas of the RAGP-SAN complex. The RAGP shows significant phenotypic diversity of neurons while maintaining predominant cholinergic innervation. Cellular and tissue-level electrophysiologic mapping and ablation studies demonstrate interconnected ganglia with synaptic convergence within the RAGP to modulate SAN automaticity, atrioventricular (AV) conduction and left ventricular (LV) contractility. For the first time, we demonstrate that intrinsic cardiac neurons influence the pacemaking site in the heart. This provides an experimental demonstration of a discrete neuronal population controlling a specific geographic region of the heart (SAN) that can serve as a framework for further exploration of other parts of the intrinsic cardiac nervous system (ICNS) in mammalian hearts and for developing targeted therapies. Todays episode features Jean Ardell, a lifelong Yankees fan and author. We spoke about how she became a Yankees fan, what drew her to becoming a writer and the inherent sexism she's dealt with over the years as a woman in baseball. The bulk of our conversation was centered around Jean's newish book Making My Pitch: A Woman's Baseball Odyssey, which tells the story of Ila Borders, an athlete Jean stumbled upon in 1994. We chatted about the process of writing it, Jean's friendship with Ila and why baseball books written by women rarely get the publicity they deserve, especially in comparison to their male counterparts. Jean Ardell is a writer, speaker and researcher. She's presented in Cooperstown, at SABR's conference, and the NINE Spring Training conferences amongst others. She's written two books on the game- Making My Pitch and Breaking Into Baseball: Women and the National Pasttime. She became a Yankees fan as a kid and hasn't looked back since.Check out her website: http://www.jeanardell.com/index.htmlBuy her books: https://www.indiebound.org/search/book?keys=jean+ardell Follow Bat'HER Up on Instagram: @Batherruppod Stargaze sound: Magic Wand Glitter http://freesound.org/people/qubodup/sounds/211624 by Iwan ‘qubodup’ Gabovitch http://freesound.org/people/qubodup under CC-BY 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode

H., Hoover, D. B., Chen, J., Cheng, Z., Ardell, J. L., Shivkumar, K., Schwaber, J. S., Vadigepalli, R. Abstract: We developed a spatially-tracked single neuron transcriptomics map of an intrinsic cardiac ganglion - the right atrial ganglionic plexus (RAGP) that is a critical mediator of vagal control of the sinoatrial node (SAN) activity. We developed a 3D representation of RAGP with extensive mapping of neurons and used neuronal tracing to identify the spatial distribution of the subset of neurons that project to the SAN. RNAseq of laser capture microdissected neurons revealed a distinct composition of RAGP neurons compared to CNS neuronal subtypes. High-throughput qPCR of hundreds of laser capture microdissected single neurons led to a surprising finding that cholinergic and catecholaminergic neuronal markers Th and Chat were correlated, suggesting multipotential phenotypes that can drive neuroplasticity within RAGP. Interestingly, no single gene or module was an exclusive marker of RAGP neuronal connectivity to SAN. Neuropeptide-receptor coexpression analysis revealed a combinatorial paracrine neuromodulatory network within RAGP, informing follow-on studies on the vagal control of RAGP to regulate cardiac function in health and disease. Can neuromodulation be used to change the sensory transduction of the ischemic ventricle? To answer this question, Editor-in-Chief Dr. Irving H. Zucker (University of Nebraska Medical Center) interviewed lead author Jeffrey Ardell ( University of California Los Angeles) and content expert Marc Kaufman (Pennsylvania State University) about the new work by Salavatian et al. Ardell and co-authors found that preemptive spinal cord stimulation can reduce the afferent signal coming from the ischemic ventricle. Was this a result of a change in substrate utilization in the heart or was this “silent ischemia”? Does this spinal cord stimulation work by Ardell and collaborators have the potential to translate to reducing pain for patients with angina? Don’t miss the extra “off the record” commentary at the end to find out. Siamak Salavatian, Sarah M. Ardell, Mathew Hammer, David Gibbons, J. Andrew Armour, Jeffrey L. In the fall of 2018, I am seeking a consulting assignment of three to eight months' duration to begin in December, 2018, or January, 2019. My current pattern is consulting work as a boots-on-the-ground sales professional, helping Senior Living Communities bring in new Residents and ensure future revenues, as I complete a masters degree, my focus being a journal article called Shakespeare for Seniors. My skill is quick-study, rapid turn around of the Senior Living sales effort, with almost immediate new revenue at any level of care, specializing in upscale CCRC or rental, both legacy and pre-construction. I am based in Washington, DC, and Birmingham, AL, but will work anywhere. atfleeson@cox.net or 703 863 1359 MY PASSION AS A CHAMPION OF BUILDING SENIOR LIVING COMMUNITIES: ♦ 80 million Baby Boomers are heading into the sunset of their lives. I am one of them. ♦ Demanding choice, Boomers will compel the Senior Living Industry to explode with “vibrant retirement living” options to accommodate the Silver Tsumani about to hit their shores. ♦ The current bricks-and-mortar can only house 8% of the Boomer population. ♦ The industry needs creative strategists – like myself – who can take it from blue sky to profitable stabilization. ♦ With more than 30 years’ study of family systems psychology, I am a compassionate facilitator who can help adult children deal with the guilt of “putting my parent in a home” and the denial of addressing the issue until Mom and Dad can’t live alone anymore. ♦ I will help seniors address their three most pressing questions: 1. When do I leave my home? 2. Where do I go? 3. How do I not outlive my money? ♦ I will offer families safe harbor to minimize the “transfer trauma” as their senior moves out of their life-long home. ♦ I will be a trusted partner in one of the most important life decisions that a child and parent can make together. Firefighter Ardell Deliz is a fascinating and compelling storyteller, and upon taking the Odyssey stage in February 2017, she spoke about her work, her perspective, and the courage of a teenage girl who wouldn't let fear stop her from fulfilling a promise. From Ardell's Odyssey bio: Originally from Puerto Rico, Ardell Deliz has made Phoenix her home since 2001. She is a Captain with the Phoenix Fire Department and has served the residents of Phoenix for over 15 years as a firefighter and a paramedic. In recent years, Ardell collaborated to start the Valley Women's Firefighter Society to assist women interested in becoming firefighters. Every summer, Ardell volunteers her time to assist with Camp Fury, a Tucson-based camp that introduces high-school aged girls to careers in the Fire Service and Law Enforcement. This year, Ardell will be starting a mountain bike team at Franklin Police and Fire High School in alliance with the Arizona High School Cycling League with the goal of “getting more kids on bikes.” This episode was performed and recorded in front of a live audience at The Screening Room on February 2nd, 2017, and was curated by Molly McCloy. We listen to some of Vice President Mike Pence's religious pandering as he spoke (at his own invitation) to the Southern Baptist Convention this week, promising believers that he and Trump "will always stand with you." After covering positive freethought news from around the world, we hear the words of American patriot Thomas Paine in the song "The World is My Country." Then we talk with well-known "Wellness" advocate and multiple triathlon world champion Donald Ardell (79), who, in addition to promoting private and public health, is a champion of the words of the 19th-century agnostic orator Robert Green Ingersoll. "Making My Pitch: A Woman's Baseball Odyssey" tells the story of Ila Jane Borders, who despite formidable obstacles became a Little League prodigy, MVP of her otherwise all-male middle school and high school teams, the first woman awarded a baseball scholarship, and the first to pitch and win a complete men's collegiate game. After Mike Veeck signed Borders in May 1997 to pitch for his St. Paul Saints of the independent Northern League, she accomplished what no woman had done since the Negro Leagues era: play men's professional baseball. Borders played four professional seasons and in 1998 became the first woman in the modern era to win a professional ball game. Borders had to find ways to fit in with her teammates, reassure their wives and girlfriends, work with the media, and fend off groupies. But these weren't the toughest challenges. She had a troubled family life, a difficult adolescence as she struggled with her sexual orientation, and an emotionally fraught college experience as a closeted gay athlete at a Christian university. "Making My Pitch" shows what it's like to be the only woman on the team bus, in the clubhouse, and on the field. Raw, open, and funny at times, her story encompasses the loneliness of a groundbreaking pioneer who experienced grave personal loss. Borders ultimately relates how she achieved self-acceptance and created a life as a firefighter and paramedic and as a coach and goodwill ambassador for the game of baseball. Jean Hastings Ardell is an Author/Editor/Speaker/Researcher/Teacher. She is co-chair of the NINE Spring Training Conference, and author of "Breaking into Baseball: Women and the National Pastime." On a Thursday in June, Jean Hastings Ardell led our intimate Clubhouse conversation. A beautiful evening. Listen in...
In 1976, a made for television mini-series called Sybil premiered on NBC. It was based on a book of the same name; a non-fiction account written by Flora Rheta Schreiber about psychoanalyst Cornelia B. Wilbur and her treatment of a woman named Sybil Dorsett, who was reported to have 16 distinct personalities. Sybil, it turned out, was Shirley Ardell Mason. Both the book and the film were a great success with its shocking and disturbing true story and yet, there have been many who have questioned the book and the story of Sybil and her 15 other selves. Ardell fell into “the cycle” - tough childhood, anger, crime, jail time, release, jail again. Then the Black Prisoners Caucus helped break the cycle. Now he works on Seattle’s successful and groundbreaking “Career Bridge” program, creating the community net to help felon reentry. Ardell and Mike talk about the issue coming from opposite ends - a white politician confronted with the enormity of the problem, and a black man living it and fixing it. Give it a listen and share it. We need a few more folks, and politicians, working to remedy our failed policies of mass incarceration.
