We had the pleasure of interviewing Amythyst Kiah over Zoom video!GRAMMY-nominated singer-songwriter Amythyst Kiah shares her new album, Still + Bright via Rounder Records. Produced by Butch Walker (Taylor Swift, Green Day and Weezer) and recorded at his Nashville studio, the 12-track album is a vital new addition to Kiah's body of work, one largely dedicated to exploring the struggle and joy of true self-discovery. While her 2021 Wary + Strange details her grief, anger, and abandonment, Still + Bright is her liberation from the events of her earlier life, examining the vast expanse of her inner world, passions, self-exploration and realization, with a darkly cinematic twist. The project – which Rolling Stone hailed is “poised to be a major moment for the east Tennessee-raised singer-songwriter” – expands upon the wild definitions of Americana music. From gothic love songs with haunting vocals (“Silk and Petals feat. Butch Walker”) to a furiously stomping fantasy-inspired folk epic (“I Will Not Go Down” feat.Billy Strings"), or an ode to meditation laced with lush mandolin lines and lovely fiddle melodies (“S P A C E”), the album affirms her as an artist of both daring originality and uncompromising depth. The album is a collision of her love of indie rock, garage guitars and symphonic metal, flawlessly melded with the visceral lyricism and songwriting she's renowned for in the roots community. The project – which features collaborations with S.G. Goodman, Billy Strings and Avi Kaplan (Pentatonix) – also marks a complete transformation in Kiah's songwriting process: her first time opening up her approach and working with co-writers on an album. The album features co-writes with punk legend Tim Armstrong, Sadler Vaden (guitarist/vocalist for Jason Isbell's 400 Unit) and Sean McConnell (Brittney Spencer, Bethany Cosentino).Kiah is currently on the road on her Still + Bright Tour, plus she recently was announced as direct support for select dates of Larkin Poe's The Bloom Tour.About Amythyst Kiah:With an unforgettable voice that's both unfettered and exquisitely controlled, the Tennessee-bred singer/songwriter is a “fantastic fingerpicker, dynamo singer and profound songwriter [who] defies all sorts of stereotypes” (Guitar Player). Her 2021 release of Wary + Strange earned glowing features and reviews from The New York Times, NPR Morning Edition, Pitchfork, and Rolling Stone, plus performances on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and CBS Saturday Morning. Kiah is also a member of Our Native Daughters—an all-women-of-color supergroup whose standout track “Black Myself” (written by Kiah) earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best American Roots Song. She recently joined Iron & Wine on their summer tour, and has shared stages with The Who, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, CAM and more.  We want to hear from you! Summary: Bird names are changing in 2024. Join Kiersten and Cheryl as they talk about a controversial decision made about bird names.   For our hearing-impaired listeners, a transcript of this podcast follows the show notes on Podbean.   Show Notes: “American Ornithological Society Will Change the English Names of Bird Species Named After People,” AOS Leadrership, https://americanornithology.org   “These American birds and dozens more will be renamed, to remove human monikers,” by Nell Greenfield-Boyce. NPR Morning Edition, November 1, 2023. https://www.npr.org   Transcript Kiersten: Intro: Quoting the bard, William Shakespeare “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” I hope all you birders out there believe this quote to be true, because some changes are a'comin where common bird names are concerned. The American Ornithological Society has decided to change the English names of bird species named after people.   Cheryl: In November of 2023 the AOS announced that birds named after people would be renamed. Birds such as Anna's Hummingbird, Bullock's Oriole, Abert's Towhee, Gambel's Quail and Bewick's Wren will all be renamed. Scientists will form a multi-disciplinary committee that will seek public input when they begin renaming the birds. They will focus on birds that are in the AOS's jurisdiction which is the United States and Canada. Beginning in 2024, they will start with 70 to 80 species.   Kiersten: Why are they doing this? Quoting Dr. Collen Handel, president of the American Ornithological Society and a research wildlife biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Alaska, “There is power in a name, and some English bird names have associations with the past that continue to be exclusionary and harmful today. We need a much more inclusive and engaging scientific process that focusses attention on the unique features and beauty of the birds themselves.”             For example, in 2020 McGown's Longspur, a small prairie songbird from the Great Plains, was renamed to the thick-billed Longspur. This name focuses on the characteristics of the bird instead of using the birds to honor a human being. I like this thought process. This is what the scientists are going to do with all those names.   Cheryl: By doing this, the AOS is admitting that the previous process for naming birds comtained some bias. There are three guidelines they will be using for the renaming process and for future newly discovered bird species. The AOS commits to changing all English-language names of birds within its geographic jurisdiction that are named directly after people, along with other names deemed offensive and exclusionary, focusing first on those species that occur primarily within the U.S. or Canada. Kiersten: The second guideline: The AOS commits to establishing a new committee to oversee the assignment of all English common names for species within the AOS's jurisdiction: this committee will broaden participation by including a diverse representation of individuals with expertise in the social sciences, communications, ornithology, and taxonomy. Within the scientific community, AOS will include a broader representation of scientists this go around, instead of just a bunch of old white guys. Cheryl: The third guideline: The AOS commits to actively involving the public in the process of selecting new English bird names. So, instead of just involving scientists on the naming process, the AOS will reach out to the communities where these birds are found as ask for comments and suggestions.   Kiersten: Quoting Dr. Judith Scarl, AOS Executive Director and CEO, “As scientists, we work to eliminate bias in science. But there has been historic bias in how birds are named, and who might have a bird named in their honor. Exclusionary naming conventions developed in the 1800s, clouded by racism and misogyny, don't work for us today, and the time has come for us to transform this process and redirect the focus to the birds, where it belongs.”   Cheryl: We know that there will be a lot of push back from birders who have been birding for many years, but this is a necessary step to opening up birding to everyone. Because birding is for everyone. Ken Kaufman, author of many widely used bird ID guides, weighed in on this decision in a recent NPR article. He's been using these names for the last 60 years and was initially upset by the decision because he knows some of the people these birds are named after, but he's come around to the idea. He was quoted as saying, “It's an exciting opportunity to give these birds names that celebrate them, rather than some person in the past.”   Kiersten: I think Ken's quote about sums it up. Remember that the only thing changing here is the name of the bird, they are still as beautiful and as fun to watch regardless of what call them.

Jodie Sweetin, Amy McCarthy, Dr. Lewis, Erin Wick, and Daniel Logan continue to discuss strategies for helping kids regulate their emotions. Tune in as they talk about modeling behaviors such as admitting when you are wrong, de-stressing together, and creating environments to have fun together without substances. Dr. Krystal Lewis walks us through a guided visualization meditation activity and you will feel much calmer after listening.   IN THIS EPISODE: [01:40] Parents need to admit when they are wrong [03:42] The need for parents to learn coping skills in order to teach those skills to their kids [06:05] Creating environments to have fun without substances [09:50] Mindfulness explained and a guided visualization [13:36] How the body is calmer after meditation   KEY TAKEAWAYS: When parents react poorly, it's important to admit they are wrong and model the correct behavior.  At a time when media is so prevalent in the life of our youth, parents can model fun and create an environment for kids to have fun without drugs. In 2011, a 27-year-old Austin Kleon gave a talk to college students outlining a simple list: 10 things he wished someone had told him about being creative when he was their age. Austin posted the advice to his blog after the talk, and the list went viral. A year later, his New York Times bestselling book Steal Like an Artist was born. Now, in 2022, Austin joins returning guest host (and Book Dreams producer) Gianfranco Lentini to muse on the 10th anniversary of the publication of Steal Like an Artist, as well as on its bestselling sequels, Show Your Work and Keep Going. Austin explores where to find the inspiration for art and the permission to create it, whether from without or within. He also shares his reservations, a decade after writing his initial book, about using the word “steal” in the title, and his thoughts on the nuances of “like an artist,” which some of his readers have seemed to miss. Finally, Austin gives a brief, impromptu workshop–much to Gianfranco's excitement–on the difference between imagination and creativity. Austin Kleon is the author of the New York Times bestselling trilogy of books on creativity: Steal Like an Artist, Show Your Work, and Keep Going. He is also the author of Newspaper Blackout, a collection of poems made by redacting the newspaper with a permanent marker. His books have been translated into dozens of languages and have sold over a million copies worldwide. He's been featured on NPR Morning Edition and PBS NewsHour, as well as in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. In 1967, a Cleveland talent agent named Sid Friedman decided to capitalize on the popularity of football in the rust belt by launching a women's football league, which he envisioned as entertainment, complete with mini-skirts and tear-away jerseys. The women he recruited had other ideas, and soon they were playing competitive tackle football, not in skirts but in football uniforms.  In 1974, the owners of several teams around the country, some from Friedman's WPFL and some independent of it, formed to create their own league: the National Women's Football League, the NWFL, which started with 7 teams and grew within a few years to 14 teams across three divisions. The league faced financial difficulties from the beginning and finally folded in 1989, but the desire of women to play professional football lives on. I'm joined in this episode by Britni de la Cretaz and Lyndsey D'Arcangelo, authors of Hail Mary: The Rise and Fall of the National Women's Football League. Audio Sources Kawsachun News - Nicaragua 2021 Election Observer Press Conference November 10, 2021 Moderator: I present Paul Pumphrey from Friends of the Congo. Paul Pumphrey: Here in Nicaragua, I saw a free and fair election. I talked to many people who were not a part of the Sandinistas party. And yet they themselves said they were willing to accept whatever result happened in the election. Moderator: Next we have Craig Pasta Jardula who is a journalist based in the United States. Craig Pasta Jardula: Mainly, I want to talk about the process, meaning the chain of custody, because that's something that we really saw that was great here in Nicaragua, it made this election a home run. The chain of custody is very strong here, including the fact that in Nicaragua, we have something that is awesome that a lot of countries need to adopt, which is where the vote is cast, it is counted, that ensures a strong chain of custody. Moderator: Next is Rick Cohn from Friends of Latin America. 13:05 Rick Cohn: I want to speak just a little bit though a group of 11 of us went to Bilwi on the Caribbean coast. And in the United States, one of the things they'll use to say this election is fake, is that a high percentage of people voted, and a high percentage of people voted for the FSLN. And that can't happen, because American politicians that would never happen. Well, so I want to say something about why the voters told us they were voting. They told us that basically, they had two Category Four and Category Five hurricanes last year, and the government came and saved their lives, saved many, many lives. And, you know, people have trust in that government. And then the government came in and made sure the electric was up. In Puerto Rico from a year earlier, electric still isn't isn't working, because they, you know, are making money selling electric, but it still doesn't work. They told us they had new roofs put on almost immediately they were delivered. They told us that the schools were rebuilt. All of the schools were in good condition. Oh, the schools and some of them have new buildings. So we had a situation where they were very happy with the performance of the government. And that is why -- oh, they also told us they had one kilometer of road before the FSLN came into power from the neoliberal period, now they have 500 kilometers. And with 70 more kilometers, they'll be able to drive from all the way to Managua, which they've never been able to do in history. So they told us these things. And the FSLN party received the highest percentage of votes, but that's not strange, because they really support the government. They received 86.7% of the vote. You know, there's no way that's made up - it's not fake. It's where they're at. It is certainly the biggest deficiency in democracy in Nicaragua is the interference that there is so much interference from the US government and the media, and the censorship and the lies that they tell. That's the interference that's occurring in this election. 33:52 Rick Cohn: Corporate media like Facebook, well, all of the corporate media including Facebook and Twitter, but social media, are actually just part of the US system and they're contracted to provide information back and forth, they're actually an aspect of the government and they close 1000s of people's accounts, who are people, and I met some of them, they're actual people, and they close their accounts. And they weren't, you know, anyone who was saying anything other than the fact that they may have been supporting the Nicaraguan people or opposed to the the sanctions on Nicaragua. AN INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE TO ORTEGA'S DESTRUCTION OF DEMOCRACY IN NICARAGUA September 21, 2021 House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, Civilian Security, Migration and International Economic Policy *Hearing not on C-SPAN Witnesses: Emily Mendrala Deputy Assistant Secretary of State at the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs Laure Chinchilla Former President of Costa Rica Co-Chair at The Inter-American Dialogue Ryan Berg, PhD Senior Fellow in the Americas Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) Oct. 2018 - Apr. 2021: Research Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute Apr. 2018 - Oct. 2018: Research Consultant at The World Bank July 2014 - Oct 2014: US State Department negotiator at the Organization of American States (OAS) 2009: Intern for Paul Ryan Berta Valle Wife of Felix Maradiaga Rep. Albio Sires (D-NJ): The regime has rounded up nearly every potential challenger to Ortega and has not even tried to hide these arrests and forced disappearances under the veneer of legality. 05:42 Rep. Albio Sires (D-NJ): Having written the NICA Act with Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), I am frustrated that the International Monetary Fund recently provided $350 million to the regime. The IMF should not take Ortega's us word for it that these funds will be used to address the COVID pandemic. 06:53 Rep. Albio Sires (D-NJ): We should also begin preparing a number of severe diplomatic consequences, assuming Nicaragua's election in November becomes a coronation for Ortega. Nicaragua should be suspended under the International Democratic Charter on November 8, and its participation under the Central America Free Trade Agreement should be reconsidered. 10:39 Rep. Mark Green (R-TN): On November 7 a political farce will be held, claiming to resemble elections. No one should be fooled about the outcome -- any hope of unseating the socialist dictatorship is sitting inside of Ortega's prisons. 13:56 *Emily Mendrala: As you are well aware, the Ortega-Murillo government has carried out a ruthless crackdown over the past several months, canceling the registration of opposition parties, incarcerating journalists, opposition leaders, potential presidential candidates, students, private sector leaders and others who defend free and fair elections, attacking the free press, closing long standing NGOs that provide humanitarian and medical assistance to Nicaraguans in need. 15:06 Emily Mendrala: In the face of sham elections in Nicaragua, we and our international partners must continue to denounce and push back against the Ortega-Murillo government's anti-democratic rule as well as its use of Russian-inspired laws to carry out repression. 17:56 Emily Mendrala: Through USAID we continue to support Nicaraguan civil society, independent media and human rights defenders. Our continued support assures Nicaraguans that the outside world has not forgotten them. 19:06 Rep. Albio Sires (D-NJ): Are we using our voice? Is the administration using its voice and vote with international financial institution to oppose loans and other financial assistance to Ortega? Because I have to tell you, it's very upsetting to me that we do all this work here. We asked the administration to put sanctions on different people. And yet the IMF, which we probably contribute the largest amount of money, or if not, one of the largest amounts of money, they seem to just ignore what's going on in Nicaragua. And it has to -- I intend to write a letter to the IMF. And hopefully we'll have them before this committee, because this is not acceptable. 20:22 Emily Mendrala: We are using our voice and our vote and every opportunity in front of multilateral institutions to oppose lending to the Ortega-Murillo government. We will continue to use our voice, vote and influence to advocate against lending from international financial institutions to the Ortega-Murillo government and we will also continue to collaborate with international partners where appropriate: EU, Canada and others to do the same. 30:43 Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX): The upcoming November 7 elections will be neither free nor fair 1:04:30 Berta Valle: Even though Félix [Maradiaga] has dedicated his life to serving our country, the regime has charged him and others with a conspiracy to undermine national integrity. The government is alleging that Félix and others were part of a global conspiracy to use foreign resources, including from the US Agency for International Development, the International Republican Institute and the National Endowment for Democracy to harm the interests of the nation. 1:16:33 Ryan Berg: As well as November 7, I think we need to declare Nicaragua's elections illegitimate under current conditions. 1:27:16 Ryan Berg: Thank you, Congressman Green, for the question. Yes, the two countries that I would point out as extra-hemispheric actors who have have come into the hemisphere to shore up the Ortega regime are Russia and Iran. Russia, we've seen with a significant presence in Nicaragua for a while. Its increased its presence in past years, to an extent that I think should be very alarming for the US government. Not only does it have a number of port agreements with Nicaragua, and access to the Caribbean, where it can engage in anti access and area denial capabilities, potentially. But also in cyberspace. We saw recently the Russians and Nicaraguans sign a major agreement in the cyberspace, particularly to help the regime not only increase its domestic security apparatus, but to spy potentially on the opposition on our own citizens, and indeed, potentially on on other governments in Central America, depending upon the strength of the equipment transfers that we'll see in future. So they have a whole number or whole range of capabilities that they are developing within Nicaragua, that there are signals intelligence stations that are actually quite close to the US Embassy in Managua. And so that's that's Russia, Russia has an interest in shoring up this regime on the cheap. And I think Iran has approached the regime in a number of ways, most specifically, in offering partnerships to circumvent US sanctions architecture, in which it excels, because of the sanctions architecture that it has been under for so long. And we haven't seen as deep I would say, as a presence of the Iranians in Nicaragua, but it's it's there and it's also concerning. I think, in general, Congressman, part of the Ortega regime's plan for survival is to sort of recreate a situation of rivalry and enmity in Central America again, and lend a platform for major geopolitical competitors to the United States to increase their capabilities on the US doorstep and I think that's a significant aspect of this political, economic and social crisis here. 1:35:50 Rep. Albio Sires (D-NJ): If the Ortega regime moves ahead was stealing this November's elections the international community must come together to impose a very steep price. John Bolton: Miami Dade College's National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower November 1, 2018 John Bolton: The "Troika of Tyranny" in this hemisphere -- Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua -- has finally met its match. John Bolton: Today in this hemisphere we are also confronted once again, with the destructive forces of oppression, socialism and totalitarianism. In Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua, we see the perils of poisonous ideologies left unchecked. Nicaraguan President Speech at the United Nations General Assembly September 25, 2007 16:50 President Daniel Ortega: The General Assembly is simply a reflection of this world where a capitalist and imperialist minority is imposing global capitalism to impoverish the world continue to enslave us all and promote apartheid against Latin American immigrants and against African immigrants in Europe. This global capitalism is one beast and it has tentacles everywhere. 25:30 President Daniel Ortega: They have to understand once and for all, that just as they have managed to profit from privatizations that have given rise to these huge multi-nationals that then set up in developing countries, they say that they are helping us. No business person provides assistance, they simply go to earn as much money as they can, they don't go to invest. Developing countries are considered to be insecure countries, and we are simply being ransacked. If we compare the volume of riches that they're extracting from our countries -- the capitalists in developed countries I'm talking about -- through their major companies, the globalized multinationals. If we can compare that wealth with what the Latin American immigrants send back to their families from the U.S. or the Asian and African families in Europe send back to their families, it is a miserable amount compared to the volume of wealth that is extracted on a daily basis by these forms of institutionalized oppression. 28:30 President Daniel Ortega: These companies are simply using cheap labor. They are benefiting from clauses in free trade agreements. I've got us free trade, why not? Free trade for societies and nations. But clearly in that system, it's the law of the jungle the strongest will impose themselves on the rest. What well the world needs is fair trade. What the world demands is really a genuine change in the capitalist, globalized, imperialist economies, that is where we need to have a change. They have to change this concept that they have of a free market. They have to change the slant of these free trade agreements. Nicaraguan Presidential Address to Congress April 16, 1991 20:00 President Violetta Chamorro: My government is committed to radically reducing government intervention in the economy and the enormous bureaucratic apparatus that we have inherited. Our Congress approved a law that authorizes private banks to operate and encourages foreign investments and is studying the privatization law in order to convert government to businesses. We are rapidly advancing towards the establishment of a social market economy. Restrictions on prices and salaries must be lifted. Likewise, we have initiated a serious economic stabilization program accompanied by the corresponding tax reforms in order to discipline and improve and decrease public spending to encourage domestic production and to stimulate private domestic and foreign investment. Lots of people live with smart dogs, but what is it like to live with a canine genius? Meet border collie Squall and his housemate Bobbie Kurivial, one of only six dog-human teams to make it to the end of the international Genius Dog Challenge.  On a quest to find "canine Einsteins or Mozarts," ethologists at Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary issued the Genius Dog Challenge, winnowed the contestants down to just the few true geniuses, studied their world learning capabilities to much astonishment, and took Bobbie and Squall on the adventure of a lifetime. Over the years, Sky has worked with just about every medium, from radio to newspaper to TV. He joins ConnectThe2 to discuss his diverse experiences in journalism, how to find a reliable expert source, what makes a quality interview, and more. Quotes • “Throughout my college career, I really developed a love for radio and audio...I just always found that medium more intimate than the other experiences. With the newspaper side of things, you can't really get the punch, the emotion from a specific soundbite.” (2:25-2:55) • “The other thing I always wish I could add to more stories is more perspectives, specifically with minority communities. There are different facets of stories that we don't really think about until we can get in there critically and really dissect it.” (9:46-10:05) • “When you want to get an expert source, and you really want to establish relationships with expert sources, not every single phone call has to be an interview.” (11:55-12:05) • “I think PR is extremely pivotal to journalists in terms of connecting with people, hearing about stories we wouldn't otherwise know about. That happens on a daily basis.” (23:03-23:16) • “I think the most important side [of a pitch] for a journalist is the news hook. The news hook makes everything. Am I hearing something that will leave a lasting impact on people? Are people going to be interested in this specific story? These are all the questions that run through your head every single time you have a story that you're planning on pitching or that you're going to pursue.” (32:27-32:51) Links https://news.wjct.org/post/proposed-nassau-beach-ordinance-could-hurt-decades-long-american-beach-tradition Learn more about Connect2 Communications: Website: https://www.connect2comm.com/ Podcast home page: https://www.connect2comm.com/podcast Twitter handle: @Connect2_Comm Instagram handle: @connect2_comm LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/connect2-communications Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Connect2-Communications

This week on the Carolina Snowflakes Podcast we take a look at the current state of recycling in the U.S. and critically examine what’s working and what isn’t.  What’s the point of dropping recyclables in the blue bin if they’re not actually being recycled?Since the 1990s there’s been a massive push through the use of marketing and propaganda to get Americans on board with sorting out our recyclables from household trash. Remember all those “save the Earth” commercials with seagulls stuck in plastic wrap and turtles choking on bottle caps? They were brilliant sources of media and they worked to motivate! Many of us do in fact take the time to recycle and that’s a plus. Recycling is a good thing and it happens to feel good too.  After all, we’re doing our part to protect the environment, right? The short answer is yes, but also no. We as the end consumers may be doing our part, but the folks responsible for all that marketing, who coincidentally are also responsible for creating much of the problem in the first place, aren’t doing their part. Guess what else? They never really intended to do their part at all despite spending millions of dollars in advertising to make us believe otherwise. That’s right, we were lied to. So join us as we discuss what lies were told and what materials in the U.S. are actually being recycled. Spoiler alert: it might not be what you think. References:Sullivan, Laura. September 11, 2020. “How Big Oil Misled the Public into Believing Plastic Would be Recycled”. The murder of two-thirds of European Jews, referred to by many as the Holocaust, did not begin June 22, 1941, with the German invasion of the Soviet Union, or September 1, 1939, with the beginning of WWII, or with 1938 Kristallnacht, or even with the 1933 rise of Hitler. According to Alexander Gendler, it began on August 1, 1914, with the start of WWI, of which WWII was just its continuation. It was then that Russia's Imperial Army of Nicholas II committed the now largely forgotten genocide of Russian Jews. His new book, Khurbm 1914-1922: Prelude to the Holocaust (Varda Books, 2019), is the most extensive collection of eye-witness testimonies and official communications revealing the genocidal destruction of Jewish life by the Russian army during World War I. According to Alexander Gendler, it began on August 1, 1914, with the start of WWI, of which WWII was just its continuation. Click here for the show notes! Please leave us a review at http://openskyfitness.com/review   The Paleo Connection to Our Primal Health   "I don't see Paleo as an end point. I see it as the starting point on a launch pad. It's the beginning of something that works for a lot of people; especially for people who have digestive autoimmune conditions, people who have poorly explained conditions of any kind, or those who find it difficult to lose weight. If you reach a certain point in which you're happy with your health, you enjoy foods like dairy, you can digest it and it's a part of your life, then go enjoy it." - John Durant   On this week's episode of the Open Sky Fitness Podcast, we had author of New York Times Bestselling books, The Paleo Manifesto and Spartan Fit! (with Joe De Sana, CEO and Co - Founder of the Spartan Race), and Founder of Wild Ventures, John Durant join us. John, who calls himself a Professional Caveman, became interested in learning about our connection to our ancestors way back in high school. Throughout high school and college, he studied evolution psychology and even wrote about it in his senior thesis. Living by Our Ancestral History   "We don't really understand how well adapted we are to certain habitats until we leave them. Until we change it, screw it up, and lose something. Some of the lessons that we have learned about our habitat have come from going into very novel ones." - John Durant   After years of research, study, and experiments of both humans and animals like the gorilla, John shares the importance of living a Paleo lifestyle to the best of our ability and how our ancestral connects to our: Chronic health conditions Poor dieting decisions Hormones Personal habitat and lifestyle Plus, John goes into detail about how Wild Ventures is helping various health and wellness related start-ups get the investment they need to grow. Current companies include: Greatist Thrive Market Primal Kitchen Kettle & Fire At the beginning of the show, Devon and I also go over what the 7 Primal Movements are and why we should be incorporating them into our weekly workouts.   Building an Optimal Habitat and Life   "How do I build a life for myself where it doesn't require discipline to be healthy? It's just something that flows natural from who I am and who I interact with. You basically get to create your own world." - John Durant   To change our lifestyles, we need to have willpower, but very few people actually have that. When we want to make changes in our live, what disciplinary action can we take to change something in our habitat? It could be anything from changing the lights for better sleep or getting rid of extra junk food lying around the house. To create the life you want, make sure it includes the people that you want to be part of your habitat. Look for a community of people who want to grow and thrive as well. Join a gym or spend time with friends who also want to live healthy lives and improve their own habitats.   "We do the best that we can with the lives that we have today and the budgets that we follow." - John Durant on how we can make what changes we can to live a healthier lifestyle.   How to Hack Your Habitat: Living By Design, Not By Default (John Durant) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttFSPYGFAco   Biohacking Our Internal Computers People are different and therefore one diet, exercise plan, or way of living is not a fit for everyone. We can actually biohack ourselves and do experiments to see what works and doesn't work for our individual bodies from nutrition to fitness. We all have different preferences, likes, dislikes, budgets and ways of living so it's normal that we're all doing different things to change our environment and get healthy in our own way. Going all the way back to our ancestors, our bodies are programmed the same way to send us signals in accordance to our environment. Depending on what we're eating or how much we're exercising, our bran and body use the ancestral software we've been programmed with to carry and send different messages. For example, for women who are constantly dieting or over exercising, the body believes that there's either a famine or a migration going on. When this happens, it's common that women won't have their period or they don't have enough resources to become pregnant because the the body is unable to provide enough resources for the support and growth of the baby.   The Benefits of Primal Movement When we're babies up until 2-3 years old, these primal movements come so easy to us. Then, we're stuck in desks at school or work for the rest of our lives. For optimal joint and body health, try to put these 7 primal movements into your daily workouts, if not a weekly basis when you're doing your workout program. If any of these movements do cause you to feel pain, it's either because you're doing them wrong or it's been so long since you've done them that your body just doesn't know how to do them anymore. These shouldn't cause you pain and you should be able to do them all. As you do these movements such as the lunge, you don't need to put a lot of pressure on your knees. If something is hurting, you should meet with a trainer or physical therapist so they can help you heal what's wrong with your body. The 7 Primal Movements Push Turn over or twist your spine throughout the body in a traverse movement Crawl Pull Hinge Squat Lunge   About John Durant John Durant is an author, entrepreneur, venture investor, and professional caveman. If you've ever struggled with your health or diet, wondering why in the world you keep getting colds, cavities, or a few extra pounds despite doing everything you can to take care of yourself, OR if you've ever struggled to maintain your energy through the day - despite cup after cup of bulletproof coffee, then THIS is the interview for you! Today we interview John Durant, a modern caveman, bio-hacker and life-hacker, and author of the outrageously popular Paleo Manifesto. We'll talk about what's Paleo, why the name has such a bad wrap, and why the caveman diet and nutrition, just may be for us. We'll discuss it's biological origins, zoo animals, ancient man, Harvard evolutionary biologists, the Torah, Bible and Moses, and perhaps everything but the Ten Commandments. We'll learn why we may have been so much healthier BEFORE the agricultural revolution, but why it's not too late to turn back the clock and get healthier now. It'll be a fascinating look at our health, and why our diets aren't serving us. We'll look at what does work and why, and simple ways we can begin to shift our health and energy levels today. We'll also look at why our germophobic society isn't serving us, and why a healthy gut, means a healthy mind. We'll look at agricultural diets, vegetarian diets, vegan diets, raw food diets, gluten and gluten-free, fermented foods, the ethical treatment of animals and much, much more. We look at myths, dogma, addiction and societal demands, and how we can mindfully move past this to make our own choices, and discover our own healthy eating habits. This is one interview that will leave you better equipped to make healthy choices to feel better about your body, your energy levels, and even a clearer mind, TODAY. Show Intro Transcript: Today we have a very australopithic guest on our show. His name is John Durant, and he's been called a professional caveman, though I guess that'd be a Neanderthal. John Durant is an author, entrepreneur, venture investor, and yes, modern caveman. His first book, The Paleo Manifesto, advocates using our evolutionary history to combat the global epidemic of chronic health problems. He has been featured in the New York Times, The New Yorker, NPR Morning Edition, CBC, Der Spiegel, and The Colbert Report. He has spoken at Google, Harvard, and The Nantucket Project and has been rated one of The 100 Most Influential People in Health & Fitness by Greatist. He's also the founder of Wild Ventures, a venture group specializing in consumer health products & technology. Prior to becoming a professional caveman, he studied evolutionary psychology at Harvard. He thinks you should try a polar bear swim, intermittent fasting, and bone marrow. For myself personally, I've been going down this caveman road for years without realizing it. I wrote a best-selling books on barefoot running, barefoot walking and connecting with the earth, and still go barefoot wherever I can even in the snow, I'll also jump in freezing water no matter the temperature, and I'm always asking, what would ancient man have done? I've called myself a tinkerer, or what John would call a hacker, or a bio-hacker, continuously asking questions and experimenting on ourselves. One area I'm fascinated with is diet. For myself, I'd been nearly a lifelong vegan or vegetarian until recently. For the last three years, I was even a fully raw vegan. But at that point I was getting fracture after fracture, until I had my bone density tested and found it through the floor. Fortunately, at the time, I had felt this strong calling to try eating differently and had been drawn to the benefits of bone broth. Since then, I've made my way back up the food chain, and now call myself a vegetarian with meat-eating tendencies. But we'll be talking with John about this, about what Paleo is, about what a great caveman diet is, a farmer diet, an industrial diet, and even about why vegan or vegetarian, may not be the way to go. I think it'll be a fun and fascinating talk, one which may have you questioning your own food choices and habits, and asking, what would caveman do? Author of “The Paleo Manifesto” and professional caveman, John Durant, came on Bulletproof Radio to chat about primitive living in an urban jungle. In this fun and down to earth episode you’ll hear John and I talk about Paleo being a biohack and cricket-based protein! Whether you live in a cave now or just plan on retiring in one, there’s something in this show for everyone. John Durant is an author and health entrepreneur. He recently released his first book – The Paleo Manifesto: Ancient Wisdom for Lifelong Health – in which he advocates using evolutionary principles to combat the global epidemic of obesity, diabetes, and other chronic health conditions. He studied evolutionary psychology at Harvard before moving to New York City and becoming a “professional caveman”: running barefoot through Central Park, mimicking a hunter-gatherer diet, experimenting with intermittent fasting, and doing polar bear swims in the Atlantic. John has been featured in the New York Times, and interviewed on The Colbert Report and NPR Morning Edition. He keeps a freezer chest full of organ meats in the bedroom of his Manhattan apartment, and he is fully aware of how strange that is.

While Europe was alive with new, sophisticated works by Vivaldi, Bach, and Handel, America was a backwater. If you looked for classical music in the early days of America, you'd be hard-pressed to find it, even in the big cities and the centers of wealth, commerce, and social sophistication. But it *was* there; in far-flung locations including the backwoods of North Carolina and the Port of New Orleans. Miles Hoffman, NPR Morning Edition music commentator and dean of the Petrie School of Music at Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina takes us on a tour of classical music in early America.

In 1860, on the eve of the Civil War, the last slave ship landed in the United States from Africa. The transatlantic slave trade had been illegal in the US since 1808, but Alabama enslaver Timothy Meaher and his friends were so sure they could get away with it that they made a bet and hired Meaher's neighbor, William Foster, to captain a voyage to Africa. Foster and his crew smuggled 110 terrified kidnapped Africans to Mobile Bay, taking them from a homeland they loved to cruel enslavement in the deep South, and changing their lives forever. Joining me in this episode is historian Dr. Hannah Durkin, author of The Survivors of the Clotilda: The Lost Stories of the Last Captives of the American Slave Trade. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons.
