You don't have to have a garden to enjoy plants and this week David Maxwell explores the plant world that prefers the indoor life. Roisin Horgan set up her houseplant business in east Belfast after years working in offices which lacked greenery. She reveals the best plants for different indoor locations including, the trailing Pothos or Parlour Palm (Chamaedorea elegans) for a dull hallway, the Calathea for areas of high humidity or the tree like Norfolk Island Pine (Araucaria heterophylla) for bright locations. In his Templepatrick garden, Reg Maxwell is pruning gooseberries and apples and David visits Claire Barnett's new north Antrim garden where she'll be taking part on the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch this weekend. Cherry Townsend joins David in studio with tips on making gardening easier and the best beans to grow in 2025. Email the programme - gardenerscorner@bbc.co.uk

At the launch of his latest video installation at the Tate St Ives, artist Andy Holden meets with David Oakes to discuss the creativity present within the bird world. But, whilst exploring avian aesthetics, Andy's artwork - "A Natural History of Nest Building" - also explores the roles of nature versus nurture at an additional level. This exhibition, one exploring how and why Birds learn to create nest structures, is created by a father and son team; the son an artist, and the father a famous ornithologist. Which begs question: was this film, one about creating homes, nurturing eggs, and fledging one's young, really just about birds? In this ornithological deep dive, Andy and Peter Holden discuss approaching a shared passion from opposite directions. You'll hear about the super-stimulus associated with the gaping beak of the infanticide-committing cuckoo, the individual spin that different birds of the same species place upon their own personal nests, and the complicated legacy of the mysterious egg-stealing Jordain Society. Andy Holden is a multi-faceted artist who has exhibited at the Tate Britain, has had music aired on BBC 6 Music, and has created everything from human-sized bower-bird bowers, to enormous knitted rocks based upon a piece of pyramid which he stole as a boy. His father, Peter Holden MBE, worked for the RSPB for almost 40 years to boost their youth engagement. He was most notably instrumental in developing their “Big Garden Birdwatch” - the UK's first 'citizen science' project, which has been running now for 45 years, and counted around 190 million birds. “Everyone deserves a meal” is one of the mottos of organic gardener Sarah Mead as she tackles garden pests – and is the thread running through this month's podcast. Fiona takes a tour of Sarah's beautiful, Soil Association-certified organic garden at Yeo Valley dairy farm in Blagdon, and find out how she works alongside wildlife rather than trying to eradicate pests. “It's critical to leave things alone so you don't break the food chain because once you've done that you've lost the battle,” says Sarah, who uses sacrificial plants, companion planting and copper tape to help manage whitefly, slugs and other challenges in the six-and-a-half-acre garden. “Organic gardening is all about being hands off. It's less work in the long run: less digging, less mowing, less spraying. It can be done on a large scale or a small one. Just start by apply one principle and keep going.” To mark Veganuary, Fiona and Chris also discuss veganic gardening, and moving away from animal-based ingredients in the garden. They touch on the value of plant-based diets that encourage us to grow and eat more vegetables, which are great for our health and for biodiversity. And they also share their love of feeding the birds in winter - and look forward to Big Garden Birdwatch at the end of this month.

Watching birds in winter – is there anything interesting to see? Surely it's all blackbirds, robins and seagulls at this time of year? In this episode, again recorded in lockdown but with the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch 29th to 31st January in mind, Susie, Tiggy and Ann are joined on zoom by their friend, Jane, to chat about the birds they have seen this winter. Jane lives at the coast and so is able to bring a different perspective from the Liskeard gardens and farmland. Winter is often the best time to see birds if this is a new hobby for you because you can see them so easily without any leaves on the trees – and lockdown walking and a little bit of seed in the bird feeders have brought some surprising bird sightings for our podcasters; Jane also reports a range of night time noises; Susie and Ann identify more unusual birds with distinctive markings; and Tiggy tells us how her bedroom is full of unexpected companions! Our podcasters hope you will have time to try the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch this week end (see below). And they apologise for omitting the spectacular starling murmurations that Susie and Ann have been to watch this winter at Rough Tor, near Camelford – well worth a visit at sunset. Apologies too for the usual interference from outside activities – this time a delivery of logs forces an interruption to the recording! Tawny Owls can make a variety of calls but the most familiar are their "kee-wick" and "hoot" sounds. The hooting or “twoo” sound is usually made by the male and is a territorial call. You can sometimes hear a female responding to a male's “twoo” call with a sharp “kee-wick”. But they make more noise than the other four species put together during October and November. And all this extra shieking, hooting and 'kee-wick'- ing is down to one thing: territory. Young birds are reaching maturity and looking for new homes while older birds are fighting to hold on to their patch.
