The inquiry states Russian President Vladimir Putin must have ordered the use of it to assassinate former spy Sergei Skripal. Sturgess' mother Caroline says a narrative's been created online, that's been distressing for family. She says she wasn't a known drug user as had been reported, she was a very loved, mother, daughter and granddaughter. UK/Europe Correspondent Vincent McAviney has the latest. In this episode of The STARTrading Podcast, Lewis and Sophie break down everything you need to know about choosing a safe, reliable broker – whether you're in the UK, Europe, the US or Australia. They cover what a broker actually is, why regulation (like FCA status in the UK) matters, and how much of your money is really protected if the worst happens. You'll learn how brokers make their money (spreads, commissions, overnight fees), what to look out for with costs, and why you want your broker to be profitable — just not at your expense. Lewis also shares the brokers he and STARTrading students use around the world (including FXCM, Pepperstone, Oanda, NinjaTrader and IG), plus why TradingView is their go-to charting platform with low or no upfront cost.If you've ever felt overwhelmed by broker choices or worried about where your money sits, this episode will give you clear, practical guidelines so you can trade with more confidence and peace of mind with a fun snack review at the end, of course.

He's started a five-year sentence for conspiring to fund his election campaign with money from late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. Sarkozy, who was president from 2007-2012, has appealed against his jail term at La Santé prison, where he will occupy a small cell in its isolation wing. Hence “Dolce Far Niente” - “the sweetness of doing nothing.” No worries would be the Australian translation.Asset allocation is WAY more important than individual stock-picking. I could pick the best biotech company in the world, but if biotech is in a bear market, I almost needn't bother. I'm better off out of the sector. But similarly, if a sector is in a full-on bull market, even pigs fly.The starting point for the portfolio, which we began on October 1, 2023, was as follows.* Gold: 15%* Bitcoin: 5%* Special situations: 10% (the ”fun” part of the portfolio, for example some of the smallcaps I write about on here)* Uranium: 5% (reduced to 2.5% as things got frothy)* Oil and Gas: 10%* Bonds and Wealth Preservation: 20%* Equities (35%)* UK & Europe (20%)* US (25%)* Smaller cos and private equity (30%)* Asia (15%)* Japan (5%)* EMs (5%)No allocation to real estate. Please like and share this post. It helps :)Since that October 2023 starting point, certain assets - gold, bitcoin and US equities - now account for far greater percentages, with energy, bonds and wealth preservation not having done so well.If you are starting this portfolio now, I would still recommend sticking to the original allocation and letting things grow.Really, I should re-allocate, but I don't want to sell any bitcoin and I don't want to sell any gold. In fact, to be honest, there is a very strong case for just owning bitcoin and being done with everything else. But that wouldn't be balanced and that's not what this portfolio is about. The only change we have made since October 2023 was to reduce uranium from 5% to 2.5% in February 2024. Uranium felt a bit frothy was the reason. More a gut- than evidence-based decision, and it proved the right one. I'm going to make one, quite major change to the portfolio today - in the equities department. More on this in a moment.Lastly, do as I say, not as I do. In my own portfolio, my allocation to bonds and wealth preservation is tiny: maybe 2%. I am overweight gold, bitcoin and special situations (smallcaps mostly). At some stage, I will get my comeuppance as a result, and it won't be the first time. Then I'll swear to change my habits, and then I will - for a bit - and then I won't. But a more sensible investor would keep their portfolio to the above allocation.Let's examine things in a bit more detail1. Gold (15%)It's done very well. Up about 80% since we started the portfolio. My firm belief is that everybody should own some gold in their portfolio. Especially now.(If you do not yet own any, my guide to investing in gold is here. If you are looking to buy gold or silver, the bullion dealer I recommend is the Pure Gold Company. There is also, of course, the soon-to-be definitive book on the subject. UK's Electoral System Challenges Naomi Smith, Chief Executive of Best for Britain, discusses the challenges of the UK's first-past-the-post electoral system and its impact on political strategies. She points out that the system is no longer working effectively for the two main parties, with recent elections showing candidates winning with as little as 22-25% of the vote. This situation has led to discussions about whether major parties should try to appeal to their core supporters or attempt to win over voters from other parties. Naomi emphasises the need for a new approach to address the limitations of the current electoral system.Brexit's Impact on UK Economy and PoliticsNaomi and Nick discussed the impact of Brexit on the UK economy and the political landscape. Naomi highlighted the fragmentation of voter preferences, with people switching from Labour to Reform UK and the Greens. She noted that Labour's inability to deliver progressive economic policies was hurting their appeal. Nick criticised Nigel Farage for the economic consequences of Brexit, but Naomi points out that the media rarely questions Reform UK's policies beyond Brexit. They agreed that politicians need to lead the conversation and not just react to past elections.UK Politics: Fragmentation and ChallengesThe discussion focuses on the current state of UK politics, particularly the Conservative Party's struggles and the rise of Reform UK. Naomi says that the political landscape is fragmented, with different parties leading in various regions. She notes that Labour needs to provide a compelling vision to motivate progressive voters. The conversation also touches on the potential for a "regressive alliance" between Conservatives and Reform UK, and the need for Labour to deliver meaningful change if they win the next election.Labour's Strategy and Progressive Party RelationsThe discussion focuses on the Labour Party's current strategy and its relationship with other progressive parties. Naomi suggests that Labour is losing more votes to the Liberal Democrats, SNP, and Green Party than to Reform UK. She also mentions internal concerns within the Labour Party about the proposed Welfare Bill, which could increase poverty and break manifesto promises. The conversation then shifts to the Green Party's perspective, with Naomi stating that Green Party leaders feel Labour is arrogant and unwilling to engage in discussions about combating the far right. The Greens' decision to run more candidates in the last election is attributed to a lack of reciprocation from Labour for their previous cooperation. Naomi expressed optimism about Britain's future, emphasising the need to address issues such as stagnant wages and declining public services. Nick talks to Naomi Smith of the campaign group Best for Britain on the dead hand of BrexitOn the fifth anniversary of Brexit, Nick Cohen @NickCohen4 talks with Naomi Smith, @pimllicat chief executive officer of Best for Britain which is campaigning for a re-building of the important relationship the UK once enjoyed with its closest and biggest trading partners in the European Union.Brexit is dead - but long live Brexit!Poll after poll has shown that public confidence in Brexit has all but collapsed. The July 2024 election returned a strong remainer-friendly parliament and yet the Labour government is trying to work with the badly bungled hard Brexit deal inflicted on the country by Boris Johnson and David Frost.Same old Brexit doom loop to appease the same old Brexit nut-jobsNaomi argues that the government can be bolder in re-building the relationship with Europe, so recklessly destroyed by Johnson & co. The country should not allow itself to be trapped with a project that has obviously failed. It seems Brexit is being prosecuted by people who don't believe in it to indulge the extremist nationalist fantasies of the political & media grifters & con artists who argued for for it.The UK can escape the dead hand of Brexit"We are not stuck with it and there is a way out," insists Naomi, who cites reliable recent research showing how Brexit is impoverishing the average Brit by at least £2,000 a year, killing growth, ransacking public services, crippling business with red tape and not only killing growth, but is knocking a massive 4% off annual GDP. (The 2008 Great Recession/crash led to a 2% reduction.)Breaking the Brexit OmertàNamoi said the government is beginning to break the taboo on Brexit, adding, "they are now beginning to talk more openly about how bad the deal that Johnson and Frost negotiated was for the country...They are now beginning to talk more openly about how bad the deal that Johnson and Frost negotiated was for the country. They don't do it ad nauseam."Naomi adds, "People aren't stupid. They've realised that they were sold a load of rubbish, and that their lives weren't going to improve and they can't now see their GP any more easily than they could before we left the EU etc."Naomi Smith is one of the country's most incisive commentators on politics & the UK-Europe relationship. Ferrero Group recently announced it had signed an agreement to acquire Power Crunch. But why would the one of the world's largest sweet-packaged food companies acquire Power Crunch? Ferrero Group is no different than other multinational confectionary giants from Hershey's to Mondelez and Mars, as involvement within the bar format of convenient nutrition is not abnormal (whether entering through M&A activity or brand extension development). In fact, Power Crunch isn't even the first deal by Ferrero Group that involved a brand selling nutritional (and/or protein) bars…as they bought the brand Eat Natural in late-2020 and FULFIL Nutrition in mid-2022. And while this Power Crunch deal signals to me that Ferrero Group wants to own substantial market share within the wellbeing snacking space…don't just take my word for it. In the press release, both Kevin Lawrence (Power Crunch founder) and Ferrero Group leadership included quotes that referenced ambitions around wellbeing snacking categorical growth…focusing on quality craftsmanship, distinctive products, and thoughtful investment. And maybe that's really why Ferrero Group targeted Power Crunch. The protein bar market (like the entire supplement industry) has mostly a “sea of sameness” composition. But where the protein bar (or functional foods space in general) varies is that differentiation can be derived from having a unique form factor. Furthermore, if that unique form factor proves popular…a competitive advantage can be created through defensibility if you own/created that manufacturing process. And as part of the transaction, Ferrero Group will take over a California facility and absorb approximately 50 employees…with my assumption being that these were key operational assets (and human capital). But while the form factor of Power Crunch is unique it's not 100% proprietary (with an increase of crème-filled wafer crisp style competitors lately). But in a contract manufacturing “follow the leader” dominated category like protein bars you'd expect to see many more competitors. Additionally, when a billion-dollar active nutrition brand like Optimum Nutrition tries (and fails) within a short timeframe to make a similar wafer style form factor successful…it likely tells you (1) the production difficulty level and (2) consumers believe the superior taste and texture of Power Crunch creates a high enough switching cost to sustain its market share. But while financial details of the M&A transaction were not disclosed, some rough “napkin math,” Power Crunch is about one-third the size of Quest Nutrition and about the same size as FitCrunch that was just acquired by 1440 Foods. And while those transaction details were also not made public, I'd estimate the FitCrunch valuation to be slightly higher because of the stronger growth rates and larger manufacturing facilities…partially offset by the fact that private equity was involved (compared to Ferrero Group being a strategic). But then finally, Power Crunch is about seven times larger than the U.S. market size of the other Ferrero Group protein bar brand FULFIL…though the bulk of their historical revenue has been generated in the UK/Europe and I believe the brand has massive upside in the coming years. But in my latest first principles thinking content, I'll also consider what could be next for Power Crunch, as Ferrero Group will be faced with a depth or breadth strategic decision.

Also, what role do gambling companies play in exacerbating addiction among high-rollers? In this episode (The Gambling Files RTFM 182), reporter Katherine Sayre of The Wall Street Journal returns to discuss her investigative reporting on gambling addiction within the high-roller VIP circles. This episode in a nutshell: * Katherine's investigation into a psychiatrist's gambling addiction and the VIP treatment she received (link to the article below). * VIP programs: When perks and bonuses cross the line. * Differences in regulatory approaches between the U.S. and the UK/Europe. * The role of state regulators in curbing gambling addiction. * High-roller bettors and their influence on operator revenues. * The fine line between entertainment and exploitation in gambling marketing. * The growing scrutiny around sweepstakes casinos in the U.S. * The rise of unregulated sweepstakes in the online casino space. Choice quotes: * Fintan Costello: “The VIP team play a very, very important part of every operator.” * Katherine Sayre: “Back in 2019, PointsBet reported internally that a half a percent of their sports betting customer base generated 70% of its revenue. So that stuck out to me as proof of how important high rollers are [to digital gambling platforms].” * Katherine Sayre: “The gambling industry has always promised to do something about this [problem gambling]. Our coverage of amazing albums celebrating their 40th anniversary continues. 70s glam rockers Slade were over big in the UK/Europe, but it wasn't until the "Keep Your Hands Off My Power Supply" album that Noddy and the Boyz breakthrough on the side of the pond. It's been a favorite of ours since the get go.To celebrate we're giving the record a track -by-track going over, and throwing in a bit of trivia as well. In our "News, Views and Tunes", the first Spirit of Halloween locale opened in Winnipeg and we have some Doctor Who geek speak. Musically, we crank some Deceased, Blitzkrieg, Morbius, Guillotine, Amethyst, Toxik Death and we introduce the hilarious Raised By Owls in our "Indie Spotlight". Horns Up!!

Wise, the international money account, is harnessing the power of long-distance payments to bring people together and keep them connected this Valentine's and Galentines weekend. Wise surveyed 1,000 Irish consumers and found that: 60% of Irish people plan on splurging this Valentine's Day. Of those splurging, they plan to spend at least €80 this Valentine's weekend wooing their partners and/or treating their friends Couples jetting off to romantic locations are set to spend over €400 this Valentine's on their romantic getaway Almost 4 in 10 (40%) of Irish people are in long-distance relationships/friendships and of those, 7% plan to travel to spend Valentine's with their loved one One in 10 (10%) plan to only spend €20 or less on Valentine's classics like flowers or chocolate, perhaps saving funds to focus on travel plans. 16% of those who said they were in a long-distance relationship/friendship send their loved ones money at least once a month Roisin Levine, Head of Partnerships, UK & Europe at Wise said: "International couples don't want to be on the back foot when it comes to money, especially on Valentine's Day. If your partner is living in or is from a different country to you, it can be tricky. They will likely have a foreign bank account and will get paid in another currency, causing stress for you both when you want to send a bunch of flowers or a card this year. A lot of people aren't aware that most of these transactions will be more expensive due to hidden fees tacked on by banks when sending or spending money abroad. Using a tool like Wise can limit the impact of these fees and ensure that the time you spend with loved ones abroad this Valentine's / Galentine's Day is focused on the things that really matter." With thousands of Irish citizens emigrating (64,000 in 2023) and living abroad in countries like Australia, Canada and the US, digital payment providers like Wise have proved essential for long-distance couples and friends who want to easily transfer money, spend in their loved ones' currency or split bills when travelling together. Of those Irish people surveyed who are in long-distance relationships: 26% of couples believe that digital banking makes it easier to send secure, cross-border payments to loved ones 25% of those in a long-distance couple state it makes online purchases in different currencies easier and allows them to send orders directly to their long-distance partners and friends 22% say it allows them to send money in their currency instantly at a fair price 16% state it allows them to more easily split bills when booking flights, accommodation or travel with friends or their partner 15% state it allows them to easily save together through digital features like Vaults, Pockets and Jars Roisin Levine, Head of Partnerships, UK & Europe at Wise added: "And not all international relationships are romantic. This is true for family and friends, too. Splitting dinner and drinks can end up costing the friend or family member visiting you from abroad a lot more money in hidden fees. It's important to make sure your loved ones always pay for a meal in the local currency". See more stories here.
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Some Vacation Photos, published by johnswentworth on January 4, 2024 on LessWrong. In the past three months, I've flown overnight from San Francisco to the UK/Europe three times. Three times, I got a window seat on the left side of the plane. And three times... well, see for yourself. Key thing to know: these aurora did not look like this to the naked eye. They were usually too faint to see the color at all; they looked like faint moonlight shining around the edges of a dark cloud. Except the "cloud" was higher up than an airplane flying at 10+ km. It wasn't apparent what they were until I blocked out light from the cabin and took a long-exposure photo. (On my phone, that just means using the "night sight" mode.) That kinda makes these aurora cooler, in a way - you won't really notice there's anything interesting there unless you know to look for it and then image it in a special way. Thanks for listening. Stephen Wolfram answers questions from his viewers about business, innovation, and managing life as part of an unscripted livestream series, also available on YouTube here: https://wolfr.am/youtube-sw-business-qa Questions include: Is it worth moving to the USA from the UK/Europe to pursue a career in science, mathematics or engineering? What if one wants to change the world? - How long should one wait after college to start some startup in an area of their interest/expertise? - When you are thinking deeply about a problem, do you think "on paper" or on a computer or a tablet or...? Do you find one of them to be better than the others? - Can you tell a couple "stamp-licking" stories from the early days of starting Mathematica/Wolfram Research? - What are your thoughts on crypto and blockchain from a business perspective in general? - What do you think have been some of the most interesting and hard questions you've been asked here and elsewhere? - Can ChatGPT increase productivity? Is outsourcing writing skills beneficial or damaging? - "AI did my homework" is the inverse of "the dog ate my homework." You don't want to be in either situation! - Visual AI can produce amazing inspirations for jewelry and that sort of intricate art. - Do you drink caffeine sources like tea or coffee? How many per day? - What practices do you use to gauge and cultivate meaningful accountability as an individual and as part of a collective? - What was your revenue plan and time-to-revenue when starting your company? - We know that you use a hierarchical knowledge organization (files in folders) but did you ever try to use a networked knowledge organization (e.g. Logseq, Roam Research, Mem.ai, etc)? Thoughts on the best way to organize knowledge? - Wolfram documentation is amazing because it's connected (related functions). - I think the knowledge graph thesis is to give people epistemological tools and make it visual. But epistemology isn't something people worry about all the time while writing daily notes. - Have you "driven" a Tesla in Full Self-Driving mode? It's out now for beta testing and it's magical. It's so, so good. Purely a vision + neural net implementation. - Do you enjoy collecting and organizing physical books? Libraries are endless fun!

Nickel briefly popped through $22,000 (10/lb) and remains in the upper end of $20,000-$22,000 where it has been sitting for the last 6 weeks. LME inventories remain low at 37-38,000 tonnes. Sulphate prices are flat and sitting at a similar discount as last week. In contrast, ore prices and NPI prices ticked higher in China – haven't seen a rebound in stainless prices yet. May be driven by rumours that China SRB is stockpiling some nickel. The big news of the week:Saudi Arabia is investing $US3.4 billion for a 10% stake in Brazil's Vale base metals business – good to see the Middle East $$ in the sector.Australia going to include nickel in the critical minerals list.Potential for Russian nickel to be subject to sanctions in UK/Europe in the upcoming year – think a lot of people choosing not to use it, but if implemented, a little more challenging given that nearly ½ of Russian nickel used to end up in Europe.Magna Metals PEA on Crean Hill/Denison project picked up earlier in the year from Sibanye – unfortunately share price was off by about 15% (but had popped up 10% in the week before). Metrics on IRR and NPV are both good at $C200 million and 22% IRR with a 15-year mine life mining 1.5-2 Mtpa of ore for a few years with an open pit and then 1.25 Mtpa underground operation with roughly 10ktpa of nickel production. However, the market reacted negatively for a couple of reasons with capital cost being the primary one:- Total of CAD$129 million including $48 million of “advanced exploration” costs, $24 million in open pit costs, and $57 million in underground capital. Think the market was expecting was going to be open pit restart and then underground so was a little surprised at the total amount.- They had some pretty splashy high-grade intervals but the life of mine grades are 0.6% nickel, 0.6% copper and over 1g/t PGMs so some investors were probably expecting some more grades to pop out.- The third reason was valuation – at $0.75/share has a market cap of $120 million versus the value for the project at $C200 million (and they also have Shakespeare) – which is a pretty healthy P/NAV in the industry sector that is struggling.A good example of challenges with high grade – can be narrower, less continuous = more drilling capital, particularly if has to be done underground.Widgie Nickel had nice step-out results and infill drilling100-metre step out Eastern Limb MEDD069 29.0m @ 1.66% Ni from 79m Incl. 5.0m @ 3.23% Ni from 88m.
