HOGELAND, MS, MFT (1948 – present) practiced as a homeopath, psycho therapist, and hypnosis expert in and around Berkeley, California. Anneke leads Family Constellation Therapy workshops worldwide. She graduated from the Pacific Academy of Homeopathy in San Francisco in 2000. A Dutch citizen, she first came to the U.S. in the late sixties for college, but soon after her arrival became completely enchanted with hot air ballooning. She traveled the world for many years as one of the first female commercial balloon pilots and set a world altitude record at 28,036 feet in 1977. Early in her homeopathic career, Anneke studied extensively with European homeopaths and found the quality of teaching, research and practice was frequently moving into realms that were not discussed in American schools. In Germany they were triturating remedies to higher levels (C4 homeopathy) leading to a greater understanding of remedies. Jan Scholten was classifying the minerals and elements. Roger van Zandvoort was working on the Millenium repertory, and researcher Frans Vermeulen was organizing and correcting the entire Materia Medica in significant ways. Alize Timmerman, as the foremost proponent of C4 homeopathy in the Netherlands, was spreading this work far and wide across the world. This is New York City as you can't imagine it, an outpost on the mighty Hudson, surrounded by forest and mountains, with not a skyscraper or even a paved street to be seen. Anneke crosses the ocean with her husband, Roelof Jans, under the auspices of the Dutch West India Company, which in the seventeenth century was expanding across the globe. Roelof, a former sailor, sees the opportunity to settle down as a landowner in the New World, and Anneke joins him at the urging of her mother—who both wants to see her daughter settled and establish a beachhead for herself as a future midwife to the new colony. Eventually, the whole family emigrates, and the novel follows Anneke through numerous personal upheavals and joys amid the gradual disintegration of Fort Amsterdam's relationship with the Native American nations surrounding the fort. This is classic historical fiction in its focus on one central character and the many evolving relationships that define her life. It works because Anneke herself is such a well-thought-out and appealing person, and that—as well as the richly portrayed and, to me, relatively unfamiliar world that surrounds her—kept me turning pages as fast as I could. After a long career in academe, an interest in genealogy led Sandra Freels, a specialist in Russian language and literature, to the Council Records of New Netherland and the delicious stories of the people who once lived there. She claims descent from Anneke Jans and sixteen other major and minor characters in her debut novel, Anneke Jans in the New World.  C. P. What happens when students combine creativity, community values, and real-world challenges? You get student-led initiatives like Empowering Entrepreneurs and ProFarmer, socially driven projects supported by Parent Link with promotions, and through Tiger Den, WAB's parent-run shop. Co-led by EJ and Morgan and run by a group of dedicated parent volunteers, Tiger Den opens weekly and hosts pop-up shops at school events. They sell WAB-branded apparel and merchandise as well as student-developed products that raise funds and awareness for community partners. EJ emphasized the idea to start this support emerged from Parent Link's vision to foster student engagement and social innovation by offering a pathway for students to raise awareness and funds for causes they care about. Tabea, from the Empowering Entrepreneurs Club, shared how they focus on sustainability by recycling old WAB PE kits into hair ties and bags, which are then sold at Tiger Den. Their partnership with Helping Hands supports single mothers while promoting eco-friendly practices. She highlighted that Tiger Den plays a crucial role in marketing and selling these recycled goods, helping the students bring their ideas to life and raise funds.   Berat and Anneke co-lead ProFarmer, a long-standing student initiative that brings Fair Trade eggs and mystery produce bags from FROOT Community Farm to WAB families. They manage sourcing, logistics, and marketing, including building their own website, to ensure ethical, sustainable food sources are available on campus. For these students, the work isn't hypothetical. As Berat explained, the skills he's developing, logistics, marketing, leadership, and ethical decision-making, directly connect to his IB Business Management course. Tabea and Anneke spoke to the personal growth and teamwork involved, and how collaborating on real issues has deepened their learning.  Looking ahead, EJ shared that Tiger Den will continue to focus on strengthening community connections and supporting student-led initiatives. Anneke Beerten was one of the top mountain bikers in the world for a decade, starting her career as a two-time BMX world champion before dominating the 4 cross circuit with three world titles. She's gone through many career transitions over the years, embracing Enduro and Crankworx to earn even more accolades. In early 2020, just after finishing her best season in enduro racing, she was in a car accident that forced her to retire from racing. She spent years in rehab, moved states, and started over in Bentonville. Before this, Anneke experienced abuse at the hands of her family's cleaning lady, who later conspired with a relative to traffic her into an exclusive club where disturbing events took place. For years, Anneke endured severe abuse and torture, silenced by fear after witnessing the tragic fate of other victims. By the time she was 12, Anneke had survived some of the most horrific experiences imaginable. As a young adult, she lived in London, Paris, and New York before eventually settling in Los Angeles, where she began her healing journey through therapy, yoga, and meditation. Today, Anneke is the founder and Executive Director of Liberation Prison Yoga, a New York-based non-profit dedicated to supporting survivors. As a vocal advocate, she bravely shares her story—a powerful testament to resilience, hope, and the strength to heal.
