Welcome to the DMF. I'm Justin Younts. In this video, I dive into the filmmakers who have inspired me the most throughout my journey in filmmaking. From Quentin Tarantino's unique storytelling style to Christopher Nolan's innovative techniques, I share my thoughts on what makes their work so impactful. Tarantino's use of violence as a stylistic choice and his chapter-based storytelling in films like 'Kill Bill' have always fascinated me. I appreciate how he keeps audiences guessing about how the chapters connect, creating a compelling narrative. Wes Anderson's attention to detail, especially in films like 'Asteroid City,' captivates me as well. I often find myself watching films on airplanes, fully immersed in the experience, and Anderson's work is no exception. His characters and storytelling approach resonate deeply with me. Then there's Christopher Nolan, who I admire for his ability to tell complex stories in a concise manner. His background in commercial advertising has shaped his storytelling skills, allowing him to convey powerful narratives in a short amount of time. I discuss how his films, like 'Interstellar,' explore profound themes of family and sacrifice, and how his commitment to practical effects enhances the viewing experience. I also touch on the importance of a strong script, as seen in shows like 'Westworld,' and how it can keep viewers engaged across multiple episodes. I reflect on the emotional depth of films like 'Interstellar' and 'Oppenheimer,' and how they leave a lasting impact on audiences. Join me as I explore these filmmakers' influences and share my passion for cinema. Whether you're a budding filmmaker or a film enthusiast, there's something to learn from these masters of storytelling. Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe for more insights into the world of filmmaking!00:00:01 - Introduction00:00:11 - Inspiration from Quentin Tarantino00:01:26 - Inspiration from Wes Anderson00:02:48 - Inspiration from Christopher Nolan00:04:26 - Discussing Interstellar00:09:35 - Discussing Oppenheimer00:10:31 - Discussing Casino00:10:55 - Discussing No Country for Old Men00:11:00 - Discussing Fargo00:14:31 - Discussing A Serious Man00:15:16 - Conclusion

This week, we're having a ball -- scrapping, yelling and mixing it up, loving every minute with this damn crew as we close out Gene HackMarch with a regal induction into the podcast canon. It's 2001's The Royal Tenenbaums, directed by Wes Anderson, co-written by Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson, and starring Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, Ben Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow, Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Bill Murray, Danny Glover and the voice of Alec Baldwin. While Anderson launched himself to prominence with Rushmore, Tenenbaums marked the full-throated arrival of a confident new voice in American cinema, and arguably remains his best effort nearly two and a half decades later. Perfectly utilising Hackman's gruff hard-ass patriarcal screen presence, cut by the man's easily over-looked and ofter under-utilised comedic abilities, it's a redemption story for an almost historically bad dad -- a funny, feel-good movie that says it's never too late to make things right. Plus: Hayley's got another theatrical outing to report on as she headed to the cinema to catch Black Bag, while both hosts have food fixations on the brain this week. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, The Royal Tenenbaums is currently available to stream on Disney+, as well as Crave and Starz north of the border. Other works discussed this week include Presence, Kimi, Ocean's Eleven, Enemy of the State, The Conversation, No Way Out, Dirty Dancing, Step Up, Center Stage, Stranger Than Fiction, Arrested Development, Hard Eight, Sliding Doors, The French Dispatch, The French Connection, Isle of Dogs, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Darjeeling Limited, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Bottle Rocket, Asteroid City and Eastbound and Down, among many more. We don't know when we'll be back or what we'll be watching, as events in Hayley's life are making recording rather difficult over the next few months. But we will return, so don't fret! We just may be going down to a bi-weekly schedule for the next little while until things blow over. And don't worry, it's nothing bad. Updates coming on our social media feeds when we have them, but until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Wes Anderson's Asteroid City offers a visually stunning, quirky escape, yet feels like it's missing some of the emotional depth that has grounded his previous work. Set in a stylized, 1950s desert town, the film presents an eccentric ensemble of characters, with performances that range from deadpan to delightfully absurd. Anderson's signature color palette and meticulous framing are in full force, lending each shot a painterly quality that fans of his aesthetic will adore.

Let's start with a big thank you to you, all our listeners. The previous show, our rather explosive Challengers review, has proven to be a great download success. The confrontation between Jeff and Phil has proven so popular we have made the controversial decision to go back into our archives and expose a review we thought we couldn't release. Asteroid City. Regular listeners know that Phil and Jeff very rarely agree, especially when a Wes Anderson film is involved. This one got so heated we thought we could not inflict it upon you. However, after the feedback we have received from our Challengers show and some extremely clever editing from Graham (resulting in a few nights without sleep), we present to you our latest review show. As you will expect, Phil is once again championing the talent that is Wes Anderson, while Jeff is fully hyped ready to attack what he calls self-indulgence. In fact, he didn't say just use that expression, he also said ****** *** ******, words we cannot print, let alone broadcast without at least three lawsuits coming our way (one of which from team member Neil). But this one is not just the Phil and Jeff show. The whole team are here – Darren, Declan, Graham and Neil. Sometimes they can even get a word in above the shouting. Just who is for and who is against this one? Check it out, you may find it surprising when one member of the team reluctantly agrees Jeff might be right this time. I stress that word “reluctantly”. If you haven't seen Asteroid City yet, and our review encourages you to do so, then it can be rented from most streaming channels. Please let us know your views on this one – are you team Phil or team Jeff? Coming soon is the start of a new At The Flicks series, until then see you At The Flicks

We finally received an update on the second of the two WandaVision spinoffs in development, with the news that Marvel has enlisted Star Trek: Picard executive producer Terry Matalas as showrunner for the untitled Vision series. Details remain sparse, but we know that Paul Bettany will reprise his role as the albino synthezoid and Marvel Studios is eyeing a 2026 Disney+ release. The 2024 summer movie season continues to struggle as newcomers Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and The Garfield Movie, essentially tied for the number one spot for the holiday weekend, each debuting at a muted $31 million; the worst Memorial Day weekend at the box office in almost 30 years. Furiosa particularly came in lower than estimates as a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road and receiving the same B+ Cinemascore. Advance tickets for Deadpool & Wolverine became available last Monday, resulting in an estimated 200,000 tickets sold for roughly $9 million and enough to break the record for first-day, R-rated ticket sales. Subsequently, at still two months out, it leads 2024 in all presales with all signs pointing to it being the year's first $100 million plus opening weekend.According to The Hollywood Reporter, Adam Wingard, director of the last two MonsterVerse films, will not return for the third installment due to timing issues. The split is amicable, with a future return possible. Netflix revealed a first look at Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher. Hemsworth replaces Henry Cavill for the final two seasons, with season 4's release date currently to be determined. Glen Powell revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he recently turned down major roles, including the upcoming Jurassic World film and a reboot of The Bourne Identity. Damon Lindelof, one of the co-creators of Lost and The Watchmen is officially behind the creative team for the upcoming Green Lantern series for DC Studios. Chris Mundy, the showrunner behind Netflix's crime series Ozark, as well as long-time DC comic author Tom King round out the creative team. Netflix released the first trailer for Beverly Hills: Axel F, featuring Eddie Murphy returning as Axel Foley. The new film, following the original 1984 release and its sequels, will stream starting July 3. Dexter: Original Sin, a prequel to Showtime's Dexter announced casting of Patrick Gibson playing young Dexter, Molly Brown; his sister Debra, and Christian Slater portraying their adoptive father. The premiere date is yet to be announced. Warner Brothers dropped a new trailer for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice that features a more extended look at the cast. The film debuts in theaters on September 6. Rian Johnson announces his next Knives Out film, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, releasing on Netflix next year with Daniel Craig reprising his role and lots of other big Hollywood names being added to the cast daily, including Fleabag's Andrew Scott. Rupert Friend, star of Wes Anderson's Asteroid City, will join Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey in Gareth Edwards' new Jurassic film for Universal. Jeffery Wright joins The Last of Us season 2 as Isaac, reprising his role from the video game.

At a band rehearsal in Brooklyn, Rachel Syme talks to Maya Hawke about switching gears between acting and music. In “Stranger Things,” Hawke plays Robin Buckley, a band geek who cracks a Russian code in her spare time; she also recently appeared in films including “Asteroid City” and “Maestro.” “When I'm acting, I inhabit the character that I'm playing,” Hawke says, whereas when fronting a band, “I feel like I'm me… But sometimes I have to screw my courage to the sticking place, and that's a bit of a character. It's me, [but] willing to stand up onstage.” Hawke discusses the inspiration for her single “Missing Out”: a visit to her brother at college, where she came to terms with some of her own choices. Plus, the playwright and novelist Jen Silverman, whose new book “There's Going to Be Trouble” deals with the excitement and uncertainty of getting caught up in a protest.
