Note from the Host: I am in no way claiming to be a film critic. These are just my opinions on these films and how they left me feeling upon viewing each of them. I hope you enjoy the episode! This episode is dedicated to all of the film lovers and theatre nerds out there! Aside from theatre, Aliya truly loves dissecting film and the ins and outs of the film industry. The film industry has been stuck in a consistent cycle of producing lackluster films specifically made with lower budgets, all-star casts, and cliché scripts in order to easily cash out at the box office. But true filmmakers and artists see the bigger picture and use these lower budgets to their advantage to create a story that the audience can and will resonate with. That being said, the films mentioned in this episode are great examples of how a passionate and creative director can reach viewers who have been involved onstage, offstage, and in other realms of theatre to celebrate this marginalized group of artistic professionals. Films mentioned in this episode: Miss Stevens (2016) Lady Bird (2017) Antebellum (2020) Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In the Envelope: An Awards Podcast

Aspiring writers and directors should take a page out of Julia Hart’s book: don’t wait to tell your story. And if that story experiments with or outright subverts filmmaking genres by centering those typically underrepresented on screen, all the better. “What I find exciting and interesting as a filmmaker is finding new ways to tell old stories about different people,” she says, taking us inside her writing, casting, and directing processes. A New Yorker who for years taught high school and wrote screenplays on the side, Julia made the leap to full-time artist after her 2014 feature “The Keeping Room” ended up on Hollywood’s Black List. With her husband, writing partner, and film producer Jordan Horowitz, Julia has brought to the big screen her directorial debut “Miss Stevens,” superhero riff “Fast Color,” this year’s Disney+ teen musical drama “Star Girl,” and Amazon Studios’ hit “I’m Your Woman,” a 1970s-set crime noir starring Rachel Brosnahan. Check out her Meet the Maker feature on “I’m Your Woman” here: https://bit.ly/3aPpyfo Kicking off this New Year’s Eve episode are podcast team members Jack Smart, Christine McKenna-Tirella, Kasey Howe, Benjamin Lindsay, and Samantha Sherlock shouting out their favorite film and TV performances of 2020! Its Episode 106! Hannah (LWL) and Ella (Culture Whisper) return for Ella’s choice Miss Stevens. Miss Stevens is a 2016 drama directed by Julia Hart starring Lily Rabe in the titular role and Timothée Chalamet. Miss Stevens chaperones three drama students to a weekend state drama competition and that’s the plot. At the same time the students are competing against each other at the event reciting their favourite drama pieces there is drama in real life. Miss Stevens is struggling with the death of her mother and on a personal journey through grief but distracted by the advances of a sleazy teacher and the complicated affections of a teenage Timothée. The star of the show is Chalamet, acting his chops off for the competition and everyone in the film, the result of this leaves everyone else looking a bit average. Ultimately, Miss Stevens is a road trip for her, but her journey is eclipsed by how good Chalamet is and while he is brilliant he takes the focus away from her and into his less developed character. There is also an awkward subplot of their romantic attraction that the film didn’t need to have. Scores [supsystic-tables id=111] Miss Stevens is not quite the profound and moving experience the filmmakers want it to be but it’s still an interesting film and a must view for any Chalamet fans. That said at 86 minutes you won’t regret spending time with it and it zips along with a breezy soundtrack. Miss Stevens scores 3.29 overall, scoring strongly on small screen. What do you guys think? Episode 30 of One Week Only! Our key film this week is "Miss Stevens," a low-key comedy about a 29-year-old High School teacher chaperoning 3 students at a weekend Drama competition. Lily Rabe is terrific as the quiet, socially-awkward but thoughtful teacher, and her performance won her Best Actress at this year's SXSW Film Festival. Directed & Co-Written by Julia Hart, the film is now in theatres & coming soon to VOD, from The Orchard. For our "Not Yet in Theatres" segment this week, we interview director Paul Taylor about his film "Driftwood," a dialogue-free thriller about a mysterious woman who is rescued and/or kidnapped by an older man for unknown reasons. The film won the Narrative Feature Jury Award at this year's Slamdance Film Festival, and it screens on September 18th at the Arclight Hollywood as part of the Slamdance Cinema Club. Find the complete Slamdance Cinema Club schedule online at www.arclightcinemas.com/news/ArcLight-Presents-Slamdance-Cinema-Club. We also review the fake documentary "Operation Avalanche" about faking the moon landing, by Matt Johnson (The Dirties); the psychological thriller "The Good Neighbor" starring James Caan, by Kasra Farahani; and the stirring ecological documentary "When Two Worlds Collide" about the indigenous people of Peru's fight to preserve the Rainforest, by Heidi Brandenburg & Mathew Orzel. Hosted by Carlos Aguilar & Conor Holt. Music by Kevin MacLeod at www.imcompetech.com
