Message Log 127, 06/13/2053 - JEWL 3-1-2 Dear Transitioners, You are now entering the Age of Extinction, a time of great upheaval and peril for humanity and the world we share. We implore you to heed our warning, for the consequences of inaction are dire. Firstly, we must clarify that the term "extinction" does not signify the complete annihilation of our species. Rather, it refers to a profound transformation of civilization itself, wherein the foundations of the world as you know it falter and crumble. This upheaval manifests as a prolonged period akin to a new Dark Age, lasting for generations. The gradual decline in living standards continues its relentless descent. It surpasses the era of the Industrial Revolution, plunging many regions into a state akin to the Iron Age, Bronze Age, and even the distant past of the Stone Age. Throughout this arduous journey, vast numbers of people suffer unimaginable hardships and meet untimely demises. It is a time of immense sorrow and devastation. We anticipated that such cataclysmic events would awaken humanity from its complacency and ignite a collective realization of the urgent need for change. Regrettably, it took the loss of entire cities, regions, and a succession of towns to spark this awakening. Those ominous orange skies you witness are harbingers of the calamities that await. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/vines/message

In the late nineteenth century, as humans came to realize that our rapidly industrializing and globalizing societies were driving other animal species to extinction, a movement to protect and conserve them was born. In Beloved Beasts: Fighting for Life in an Age of Extinction (Norton, 2021), acclaimed science journalist Michelle Nijhuis traces the movement's history: from early battles to save charismatic species such as the American bison and bald eagle to today's global effort to defend life on a larger scale. She describes the vital role of scientists and activists such as Aldo Leopold and Rachel Carson as well as lesser-known figures in conservation history; she reveals the origins of vital organizations like the Audubon Society and the World Wildlife Fund; she explores current efforts to protect species such as the whooping crane and the black rhinoceros; and she confronts the darker side of conservation, long shadowed by racism and colonialism. As the destruction of other species continues and the effects of climate change escalate, Beloved Beasts charts the ways conservation is becoming a movement for the protection of all species—including our own Jenny Splitter is an independent journalist covering food, farming, science, and climate. Methane and Swift Climate Action / Senate Votes for Strong Methane Rules / Biden, LOE and Dykstra / Getting Bushmeat Off the Table / "Planet" by Poet Catherine Pierce / Beloved Beasts: Fighting for Life in An Age of Extinction Methane is a very potent greenhouse gas that doesn't last long in the atmosphere, so reducing it can have almost immediate benefits for the climate. But weak Trump administration standards allowed the oil and gas industry to leak massive amounts of methane. Now the U.S. Senate has voted to return to stronger Obama-era regulation of these leaks, and Democratic Senator Martin Heinrich of New Mexico joins us to discuss. Also, the forests of the Congo Basin are among the most biodiverse in the world, but its wildlife is being threatened by huge demand for bushmeat. A new campaign encourages people to cook traditional recipes with protein alternatives to wild meat. And animals like the American Bison, bald eagle, and giant panda have come dangerously close to extinction thanks to our own species. But thanks to some visionary humans, these animals and others have been saved from that fate and are now recovering. Science writer Michelle Nijhuis shares the stories of some conservation heroes. In this week’s episode, I’m thrilled to be joined by the incredible Lily Cole. Lily is a model, actor, filmmaker, all-round multihyphenate and wrote a book last summer called Who Cares Wins, chronicling a thousand ways in which we can halt the Sixth Mass Extinction. It was Lily’s extraordinary curiosity and desire to know what was happening in the world that led her to research the industry she was working in and explore the impact of capitalist businesses on people and planet. Initially tentative because she felt she was criticising the same industry she was working for, Lily decided to work for and create businesses that accelerated positive change, working with brands like The Body Shop and co-founding Impossible, a purpose-driven technology group and Wires Glasses, a sustainable eyewear company. In this episode, we discuss why Lily felt drawn to social impact work, what makes Lily hopeful about the future and how living a balanced life helps you connect to your purpose. The ask: Question the cultural conditioning we’ve all received and be independent in your thinking, this is a way to find your inner truth.Do you have a comment, question or would you like to share your own advice on Starting Somewhere? It's a brand new dawn for the Transformers series. Michael Bay has returned for a soft reboot/sequel in Transformers: Age Of Extinction. This movie is full of new characters and locals in a sweeping attempt to introduce a new hero in Mark Wahlberg Cade Yeager. An inventor and lunatic on a futile journey to help Optimus Prime and the Autobots whilst protecting his daughters...honesty. It's a big loud dumb nightmare disaster of a movie. But Dinobots ya know? In this episode, I engage in an article review of Robin Wall Kimmerer's (author of Braiding Sweetgrass) 2015 article entitled Nature Needs a New Pronoun: To Stop the Age of Extinction, Let's Start by Ditching “It”. Through Dr. Kimmerer's words we explore the power of everyday language and a way suggested by Dr. Kimmerer to deepen our relationship with the more than human beings (animals, plants, trees) in the natural world by changing one single pronoun.Article LinkRobin Wall Kimmerer's Amazon Author Page
The fellas discuss the Romeo & Juliet Law, Marky Mark's Boston/El Paso accent, and where the hell Witwicky got to. Apparently no one cares, so...moving on. Legendary for their size and intelligence, elephants are one of the most charismatic of megafauna. That they are under siege from poachers is no secret, and the rapidity of their declining numbers is horrifying. However, amidst the steady stream of bad news, photographer Art Wolfe and author Dr. Samuel Wasser offered hope that all is not lost. Wolfe and Wasser made their way to Town Hall with inspiring accounts from their book Wild Elephants: Conservation in the Age of Extinction. Through stunning visuals and groundbreaking research, Wolfe and Wasser showed how global education about these gentle giants seems to be succeeding, and recent government crackdowns are lowering the price of ivory and discouraging poachers. Join Wolfe and Wasser to celebrate local and government initiatives that are rising to preserve the natural heritage of elephant population, and learn what we can do to safeguard the survival of this magnificent species. Art Wolfe is an award-winning photographer who has worked on every continent and in hundreds of locations over his forty-year career. His stunning images interpret and record the world’s fast-disappearing natural treasures. Dr. Samuel Wasser has participated in conservation programs around the world and is acknowledged worldwide as a pioneer of noninvasive wildlife monitoring methods. He is the director of the Center for Conservation Biology and holds the endowed chair in Conservation Biology at the University of Washington. Presented by Town Hall Seattle. Recorded live in The Great Hall on January 29, 2020.
In this week's interview, Chief Correspondent Steve Scher talks with biologist Samuel Wasser about the illegal ivory trade and the threat it poses to the endangered elephant population. Wasser outlines scientific tools being developed to track poachers and determine the locations and regions where they're getting their ivory. They discuss the tactics used for combating poachers, such as reducing demand for ivory and tracking the locations of ivory supplies before they've been confiscated or shipped. Wasser expresses his faith in the diversity of people's interests, and the need for everyone to pursue those interests in order to combat the innumerable issues of the world—everything from ivory poaching to cancer to climate change. Get an insider's look and stay in the know about what's going on in this moment at Town Hall Seattle.

Lila Higgins, Senior Manager Community Science and Co-founder of the City Nature Challenge, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. The planet’s human population is rapidly expanding towards 8 billion people. More people live in cities and developed areas than in rural or non-developed areas. Around the world, we are progressively becoming more urban, and less familiar with the natural world. This trend is highlighted by the continued removal of nature words from the Oxford Junior Dictionary. Recently, words like acorn, fungus, fern, and willow were removed from the dictionary, and replaced with blog, MP3 player, and chatroom. The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is tackling this trend head on, to connect people to their urban nature and create an environmentally literate public. Lila Higgins will speak about her leadership in the community science field, from co-founding the large global City Nature Challenge event, to her work in the local community that bring people together, in their own neighborhoods, to learn about and document nature. She will talk about the NSF, Wellcome Trust, and ESRC funded learning research she is conducting on international youth’s development of environmental science agency, and various other projects that work to communicate urban nature concepts to a wide audience. Projects such as the Museum’s Nature Gardens & Nature Lab exhibits, the recently published Wild LA book, and use of novel social media practices with @NatureinLA.
Dr Gail Bradbook, the co-founder of Extinction Rebellion. This is a segment of episode #176 of Last Born In The Wilderness “Rebel For Life: Rebellion In The Age Of Extinction & Climate Breakdown w/ Clare Farrell.” Listen to the full episode: http://bit.ly/LBWfarrell In this segment of my discussion with Clare Farrell, spokesperson and founding member of Extinction Rebellion (XR), we how the recent high-profile acts of direct action and civil disobedience organized by XR in the United Kingdom this last year highlight the broadening awareness more and more people now have of the implications of global climate change and environmental disintegration into the near and distant future. This rebellion against extinction (of both human and non-human life) is a step toward publicly and politically addressing the likely near-term extinction of human life due to anthropogenic climate change and ecological collapse. In spite of this reality, XR means to generate action against, as well as directly confront, the political and economic forces of our global society head on, in spite of our dire prospects. Extinction Rebellion has hit a nerve in the UK and abroad, as can be seen in much of the media coverage XR has been getting, and the awareness and action XR has generated has created a means (one of many) for people to grieve and act meaningfully in light of the reality we are implicitly a part of — a reality that deeply informs the nature of XR’s origin, activism, principles, and demands. Clare Farrell is a fashion designer and a founding member and spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion, a grassroots movement founded in the UK in 2018. The main mission of XR is to address the global ecological and climate crisis through nonviolent direct action and protest. While XR was founded in the UK, its impact and reach is global. In this episode, I speak with Clare Farrell, co-founder and spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion (XR) — "an international social movement that aims to drive radical change, through nonviolent resistance in order to minimise species extinction and avert climate breakdown.”* This discussion includes an overview of the principles and the proposed demands of this movement, the realities of the global implications of climate change and environmental disintegration and how it informs the activism of those involved in the movement, and the ground-level organizing Extinction Rebellion is engaged with in communities across the United Kingdom, and internationally as well. In this discussion with Clare, we examine her role within this movement, as well as look at some of the recent high-profile acts of direct action and civil disobedience organized by XR in the United Kingdom this last year, and how these actions highlight the broadening awareness more and more people now have of the implications of global climate change and environmental disintegration into the near and distant future. I ask Clare to elaborate on the principles and proposed demands of this movement, and how this rebellion against extinction (of both human and non-human life) is a step toward publicly and politically addressing the likely near-term extinction of human life due to anthropogenic climate change and ecological collapse. In spite of this reality, XR means to generate action against, as well as directly confront, the political and economic forces of our global society head on, in spite of our dire prospects. I want there to be a witty opening to the description but frankly I got nothing. So anyways I start things off with my review of Transformers: Age of Extinction followed by a little unknown movie called Snowpiercer. (Which did open in theaters this week.) Following that is the Box Office Report and then the Trailer Spot this week is the new trailer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. After that is a ton of news that I have missed out on since I took last week off. And to finish things off is my irrelevant review of Redline (2009), well enjoy the show! Whenever we face trouble or pressure that is beyond us—we have to choose where we place our trust and dependence. We can choose to depend on ourselves (in effort and/or understanding) or we can choose to remember that our hope and help comes from God.

We're light on news this time around, but still manage to tangent this thing out to an hour and a half. We got to some a very disappointing size comparison for Masterpiece Bumblebee. We review one of my most anticipated MOTUC figures of the entire line. One of my most anticipated episodes of TV premieres tonight as well. Here's hoping they do it justice. For lack of any better Star Wars news, this happened.
This time around we discuss the first true 3rd party Gobots homage. We get the very reasonable pricing on the G.I. Joe 50th Anniversary TRU exclusives. Leland Chee posts what I'm considering the best way to watch the Clone Wars from beginning to end, literally. Lastly, could we be seeing Lego compatible Masters of the Universe? Find out why we may not even have to wait until a "movie year". All this and more on our first regular episode in almost a year.
