Well, it's been a hot minute, but we're back! Life got pretty crazy and hectic for the last 6 months and we had to take a longer break than anticipated. From broken collarbones to moving, to weddings and jobs changes, we didn't get nearly all the progress made that we wanted but we are thrilled to finally be back and settling into a (hopefully) less hectic schedule. For our Halloween premiere, Anastasia is opening with a tale that'll have you double checking your locks and windows tonight... This case is the one that is described as "ending the age of innocence" in the United States. Most people are unaware of this case, but it is one of the first random mass murders in the 20 century here, and became the reason why many began locking their doors at night. Enter one dark and dreary night, a man by the name of Richard Speck and the 8 nurses who Fortune turned her face from...and the 2 that she favored. Join us as we enter the history of a quiet townhouse filled with nurses that would soon be filled with horror... Wait to Panic is a weekly podcast where two longtime friends take turns sharing stories that just might make your skin crawl. Bonus background puppy jingles. Welcome back creeper peepers! Loren is up this week with a truly horrifying story. On October 25, 1994, Susan Smith reported that she was carjacked in South Carolina by an unknown man at a traffic stop. He took her two small children in the backseat of her car and drove off. To the public, Susan was a distraught mother, making pleas for their safe return through the media outlets, alongside her ex-husband David. Both Susan and David had multiple affairs during their on-and-off relationship, and used their young children as pawns throughout their troubled marriage. To his credit, David did seem like he was a devoted father who genuinely loved his two children. Susan however...well, that's a different story. As you might suspect, the truth behind the whole ordeal was darker than what met the eye and the story that unfolded will probably horrify and infuriate you as much as it did us. The daughter of Austrian-Jewish refugees who had fled to Honduras, Ruth had a seemingly bright future. There at the University of Miami, Ruth would meet Gary Steven Krist. Gary started his life of crime young, at only age nine. After being arrested for attempted car theft in 1968 at age 18, Gary realized he needed a better way to make money than petty crime. As he sat in jail, he planned the perfect scheme: to locate and abduct a young heiress. He worked out issues like how to communicate with her family and where to hide her while waiting for the money, and concluded that burial underground would be the perfect solution. Welcome back, spooksters! This week, Anastasia is bringing you the hair raising tale of one of the best documented cases of exorcism on US soil. Exorcism is something that has long fascinated people the world over and the mystery of the unknown still surrounds much of these rites and rituals. In the Christian church, priests are instructed to carefully determine that the nature of the affliction is not actually a psychological or physical illness before proceeding with the Rites. Enter Emma Schmidt, pseudonym Anna Ecklund, a young woman with a troubled upbringing and a firm faith in her religion. Raised by a truly monstrous father, Emma turned to the only place and people who had ever brought her comfort- her local parish. Mocked by her father for her beliefs, Emma buried herself in her local religious community as much as she could, but as she entered her teenage years, she found little comfort within those sacred walls. Emma became repulsed by the holy and blessed objects, thoughts of horrendous violence filled her head, and it wasn't long before she was unable to enter the church at all. After unsuccessful attempts by both doctors and her religious counsel to help, an exorcist was requested. On June 18, 1912, Emma underwent an exorcism by Father Theophilus Riesinger, a Capuchin priest from Bavaria. The Rites were initially considered a success, but Emma's story had just begun... Join us as we start 2021 with a series by Loren! Grab a chair and get comfy because for the next few months, Loren will be covering some dangerously fascinating women. Of this lengthy list, there is a rather surprisingly small number of women. Over the next few months, Loren will be going backwards from current day until she reaches the original- Ruth Eisemann-Schier- in 1968. But before we get to Ruth, we have to start in current times. On April 6, 2016, Brenda Delgado was added to the list for the orchestration and execution of a murder-for-hire scheme. A jilted (in her mind) former flame, Brenda was out for revenge against her twice ex-boyfriend's new love, Kendra Hatcher- a pediatric dentist in Dallas, Texas. Brenda Delgado is the 506th person to have been added to the list and only the 9th woman to have made the dangerous cut. The FBI has had a "Ten Most Wanted Fugitives" list since March 14, 1950, when a reporter for the International News Service (now the United Press International) asked the FBI for names and descriptions of the "toughest guys" the Bureau would like to capture. What no one could have anticipated was the publicity that such a list would create. The list generated so much interest that the late FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover implemented the "Ten Most Wanted Fugitives" program. This program is designed to publicize particularly dangerous fugitives who might not otherwise merit nationwide attention. The FBI recognizes the need for public assistance in tracking fugitives and since its inception, 162 of the “Ten Most Wanted Fugitive” apprehensions have been the result of citizen recognition of publicity from this program. We're back to our normal horror filled schedule this week and Blake is joining Anastasia as a guest for this one! In Texas, there's a little town that hugs the line between Texas and Arkansas. Nicknamed "The Town That Dreaded Sundown" for a string of unsolved murders, the small town of Texarkana stars in our story. (And also a horror film by the same name) In 1946, a sadistic killer wearing a white mask/sack terrorized the small town of Texarkana at night. Claiming 5 of his 8 victims, this small town lived in terror for 10 long weeks. Police patrolled the "lover's lanes" and began a manhunt for the killer. Now, 70 years later, the case is still the number one unsolved case in Texas. We'll be back to normal shortly. We appreciate you all for putting up with us* An architectural curiosity, this mansion holds as many secrets as it does marvels. Once a modest unfinished farmhouse in Santa Clara Valley, it quickly transformed into something else entirely. Home to Sarah Winchester-- the widow of firearm magnate, William Wirt Winchester-- this 4 story home consists of a staggering 161 rooms, 40 bedrooms, 2 ballrooms (1 finished, 1 unfinished), 47 fireplaces, 17 chimney's, 2 basements, 3 elevators, and over 10,000 panes of glass. After the unfortunate deaths of her infant daughter and husband, Sarah turned to the occult. Consulting a Boston medium, she was told that the only way to appease the spirits of those killed by the Winchester's rifles, was to move West and build continuously build a house. So, Sarah did just that. Fabulously wealthy, she was able to hire carpenters to work on her mansion, the sound of construction filling the house day and night, even as she filled it with oddities of her own. For decades, this trend continued. Then, on the announcement of her passing, everything fell silent. For over 400 years this regal estate has been the seat of the Townshend family. And, like many centuries old buildings, it has quite the reputation. From stately landscaping and architecture ahead of its time, Raynham has also provided one of the most famous photographic captures of an earth bound spirit- The Brown Lady of Raynham Hall. Rumored to be Lady Dorothy Walpole, the sister of Robert Walpole and wife of Lord Charles Townshend, the Brown Lady has wandered the halls for nearly 200 years. A loveless marriage turned dark when her jealous husband found out about her past romances and staged her funeral, all the while keeping her as prisoner in their home. Since her death, Dorothy has haunted the halls as she did during her final year and has provided amusing (to us) hauntings and spookings to those who have dared stay the night. Six months after her assault, Mary faced her assailant, Lawrence Singleton, in the courtroom. Though only sentenced to fourteen years--- the maximum sentence allowed by California law at the time--- the presiding judge remarked, "If I had the power, I would send him to prison for the rest of his natural life." Join us this week as we head back across the pond to Scotland! Loren is taking us on a chilling journey from Scotland--where our story begins-- to London--where it all comes crashing down. Dennis Nilsen killed, defiled, and dismembered 15 young men between December 1978 and February 1983, practically under the noses of his neighbors. At the onset of puberty, Nilsen discovered he was homosexual, which initially confused and shamed him. He kept his sexuality hidden from his family and his few friends. Though Nilsen eventually recognized his sexual desires, he was never comfortable with them. Nilsen's first victim was in 1978 and over the next five years, he went on to kill-- according to his confession-- twelve young men and dissect their bodies before disposing of them in various ways. He said he went into a trance during the killings, saying of one victim: “In the morning he was lying there dead on one of the beds, fully clothed. I got the impression he wanted to go, and I must have killed him. I can’t remember strangling him.” When police finally arrested him in 1983, it quickly became apparent that, had they linked a series of reported incidents from lucky escapees over the previous five years, they may have halted his hellish killing spree considerably sooner. Join us this week as Loren tells one of the most disturbing Florida stories we've heard yet- the tale of Carl Tanzler and his unwilling love. Mentally prepare yourselves, because you're gonna need it for this one. Carl Tanzler had many aliases. Born in Germany in 1877, he went by Georg Karl Tanzler, Carl Tanzler von Cosel, Carl von Cosel, and Count Carl Tanzler von Cosel. Our story really picks up in the spring of 1930m while he was working as a radiology technician with the Marine Hospital Service in Key West, Florida. There, he met a lovely, but very ill, young woman by the name of Maria Elena Milagro de Hoyos. Do you believe in reincarnation? Reincarnation or transmigration is the belief that a being can start over in a new life and body after they have passed away. Many believe that death is only the start of a new beginning and this week, we have an unnerving tale about just this. In May 1957, the small town of Hexham in England became a pivotal point in one family's life. On this ordinary morning, 11-year-old Joanna Pollock and her younger sister, six-year-old Jacqueline, were on their way to church with their friend Anthony when they were struck by an erratic driver. A year later, they were seemingly reborn as Jennifer and Gillian. The two girls were twins, something that neither was predicted by the doctor, nor ran in either side of the family. Immediately, the family noticed physical similarities between the two sets of children, but it wasn't until they were somewhat older that things began to get a bit unsettling... Are you imagining the two little girls in the hotel hallway asking if you want to play? Because we sure were...Wait to Panic is a weekly podcast where two longtime friends take turns sharing stories that just might make your skin crawl. Elizabeth Bathory is reputed to have killed at least six hundred victims, earning her a Guinness World Record for most prolific female murderer. Her actions resulted in a nickname of the "Blood Countess". Elizabeth was accused of a haunting litany of crimes against both female servants and minor noblewomen who had come to her for training and education. Most of her alleged assaults and murders took place after she was widowed in 1604. Sounds like a pretty terrible woman, right? Loren's about to dump a big ol' bucket of cold water on all of this with the revelation that Elizabeth may have been innocent and there's evidence to support it. Now, this is not to say she was a nice person. Her husband was off at war, and she had to manage an INCREDIBLE amount of business in his absence, even before he died – thousands of servants, governing the local populace, and handling an amount of property second to none. Elisabeth Bathory needed everyone around her to know one thing, and one thing only: she was Head Bitch, and she had no time for your bullshit. Nothing about her was warm and cuddly. We absolutely believe she made life shitty for servants and likely many of the young noblewomen sent to her. It is beyond questioning that she beat the hell out of her servants, and some undoubtedly died from it. Mind you, we aren't excusing her behavior, but there's more to this story than first meets the eye. So what really happened? We can't know for sure, but we know that George Thurzo – Palatine of Hungary and dickass extraordinaire – played a huge role... (Fair warning, both of us were mentally drained this week and had no filter or cares to give. Our tired brains think we're hilarious, so welcome to the no filter club!) Just south of Mexico City, between the canals of Xochimico you can find a small island with a sad background that was never intended to be a tourist destination. The island is known as Isla de las Munecas- The Island of the Dolls. The island is a chinampa- or floating garden- of the Laguna de Teshuilo and one of the main attractions of the channels. The owner, Don Julián Santana Barrera, found a young woman on the banks of the island, entangled in the lilies that grow thick through the canal. He began hearing whispers, voices, and footsteps, despite his hut being miles away from civilization. Driven by fear, he spent the next fifty years hanging more and more dolls, some missing body parts, all over the island in an attempt to appease what he believed to be the drowned girl's spirit. Is the island really haunted or is it all a result of one man's descent into madness? You decide... Hey listeners- We have a little bonus episode today that we would really love for you to listen to and share. You may see this one shared by other podcasters. We are all banding together to help share this story in the hopes that Ashley's family may finally have some peace. If you share this, please include the original title, "Where is Ashley Morin?", and you can also use the hashtag #MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women), #MMIWG, and #NotInvisible to help Ashley's story be seen. We genuinely hope that someone out there will come forward with information as the story spreads. Ashley Morin, an indigenous woman, went missing from North Battleford, Saskatchewan, on July 10, 2018. RCMP believe her to be a victim of homicide, but without any physical evidence, her case has remained open. Ashley's family and friends have searched for 2 years, mostly on their own, hoping to find her and discover the truth about what happened to her. Her family knows where she most likely is. They fear that Ashley's remains will not last another winter, so time is running out. They are asking for public support to either convince government agencies to rent sonar equipment to scan bodies of water, or to raise the funds required to rent the equipment themselves. Native American women are 10 times more likely to be murdered and/or sexually assaulted. These crimes are ones that typically fall through the jurisdictional cracks, and leave victims and their families to deal with the aftermath as best they can on their own. We would like to thank Brandon Gerbig for sharing this interview with us and helping to turn the spotlight to this small town case. We truly hope that Ashley's loved ones are able to find closure and peace with the support of everyone sharing her story. Please, please help us share this and bring Ashley home.
