JEDEN. PREIS. Viel Spaß! "Florida, we need to have a talk." jokes Stephen as this week's story takes us to Key West where nothing ever wild happens! Just kidding, because even if nothing else weird ever happened in Key West this story would be enough to forever mark the city. It's certainly got both Christi and Stephen shaking in their boots as there's a level of macabre in this, very much true story, that's unforgettably creepy to its very core. We're of course talking about radiologist Carl Tanzler and his corpse bride. Often referred to as Count Carl von Cosel (a name and title he made up and gave himself), Tanzler became deeply committed to pursuing a patient of his after recalling a dream where his true love looked exactly like her. Unfortunately for Tanzler she passed away from tuberculosis, and unfortunately for her that didn't stop Tanzler. After two years of longing for his unrealized love, he took matter into his own hands and dug up her remains, hellbent on making her his wife. The many years it took to uncover Tanzler's sick escapades resulted in the situation only growing weirder, but you'll have to tune-in to discover the sordid details that even your spooky minded hosts struggle to fully accept is real.Quotes“So he just makes stuff up. He's just like, 'Eh, I think I'm gonna be a Count,' which by the way from this point forward I would like you to refer to me as Baroness, because uh, I'm a Baroness!” (11:10-11:18 | Christi)“So, Carl visits her daily and every night he continues to call here and propose over the phone. Bitch are you gonna tell him? She's dead boy, she ain't answering!." (15:40-15:54 | Christi & Stephen)“No I can relate because what always freaked me out was the Tooth Fairy." (34:30-34:33 | Stephen)“Fuck you Carl! Fuck you Carl! Alright so we're going to call this Stephen Give too Many Fucks.” (40:11-40:17 | Christi & Stephen)  LinksSend us your ghost or weird stories here: beyondthenormpod@gmail.comSubscribe to our Patreon: www.patreon.com/BeyondtheNormPodcastFollow Christi on IG: www.instagram.com/christilukasiakFollow Stephen on IG: www.instagram.com/s_c_mayo Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. In episode one, we discuss the one sided love affair that would lead to some seriously shady stuff to follow. This is one of Key West's most enduring legends. We also have a special guest with us as friend of the show Kat joins us to give her unique viewpoint. Hold on to your butts ladies and gentlemen, as it gets quite weird from here. Oh, and apparently I (Don) have been told that this episode needs a trigger warning, as it does deal heavily in the topic of consent... Enjoy!

The story of Elena Hoyos and the man who called himself Count Carl von Cosel is a Key West legend. It's a true story if unbelievable in its macabre details. Karl Tanzler, though everybody still refers to him as Von Cosel showed up in Key West in the 1920s where he worked as a radiologist at the local hospital. That's where he met Elena Hoyos. She was a beautiful young Cuban-American woman who had tuberculosis. Von Cosel fell in love with her, and he treated her for her illness. When the treatments did not work and she died that didn't end their story. Two years later, he took her body from the mausoleum and lived with it.... For seven years. My Special Guest is Ben Harrison Ben Harrison is the author of Undying Love, a shocking true Key West story of a passion that defied death. In writing this definitive and mesmerising tale of the most obsessive love imaginable, Ben Harrison did his homework thoroughly, studying numerous press accounts from the 1930s as well as the von Cosel memoir. What makes Undying Love so special are the interviews Ben conducted with those old enough to have known the story participants and the way things were in Key West during the 1930s... Ben has been a guest on The Howard Stern Show, This American Life, Dr. Demento, The Dick Cavett Show and more. Winner of the Adeline Turner Award for Outstanding Performing Artist, he has recorded ten studio albums and is currently working on his fourth full-length theatre musical. "Ben Harrison separates fact from myth and untangles the thread of intrigue in this gothic tale of obsessive love and melancholy madness." Danny Elfman, musician, composer, record producer, and actor.  "This story has it all. Obsession, madness, even a sweet May December romance." Florida Sun Sentinel Karl Tanzler Karl Tanzler, also known as Count Carl von Cosel, was a radiologist in Key West, Florida, who developed an obsession for one of his patients, Elena Milagro Hoyos. The beautiful young woman died from tuberculosis in 1931. With her parents' permission von Cosel had an above ground mausoleum built for her. He visited the tomb every night and by 1933 he had taken the body home. Elena Hoyos Elena de Hoyos came from a small family. They couldn't afford an elaborate funeral after her death, her father made cigars and her mother was a maid. The Count made sure that Elena received a proper burial instead of the shoddy wooden box, which was the plan according to her family. Tanzler had Elena buried in a huge mausoleum, equipped with lighting, electricity, and a telephone connected to Elena's grave. In this episode, you will be able to: 1. Delve into the story of The Count and Elena, who they were and how their stories became entangled 2. Explore the responses from the local and wider community, family and friends 3. Hear from Ben Harrison on the subject who spent years researching and interviewing people around this case 4. Gain an understanding of the historical backdrop of Key West at the time. Carl Tanzler, also known as Count Carl von Cosel, was a German-born radiology technician who became famous for his bizarre and disturbing obsession with a young woman named Elena "Helen" Milagro de Hoyos. In 1931, de Hoyos, who was suffering from tuberculosis, became Tanzler's patient at the U.S. Marine Hospital in Key West, Florida. Tanzler became convinced that de Hoyos was his true love and believed that he could cure her using his unconventional methods, which included various experimental treatments and homemade medical devices.Despite his efforts, de Hoyos eventually succumbed to her illness in October 1931. However, Tanzler's obsession did not end with her death. He secretly removed her body from the mausoleum and transported it to his home, where he attempted to preserve her using wax, plaster, and other preservation techniques. His case received widespread media attention and over 6,000 people came to view her body. Sources:https://horrorobsessive.com/2022/02/04/a-doctors-unhealthy-obsession-the-story-of-carl-tanzler-and-elena-de-hoyos/https://historycollection.com/the-real-corpse-bride-carl-tanzlers-horrifying-obsession/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_TanzlerSupport the showThanks for listening! Death is a part of life. Although they are polar opposites you can't have one without the other. Dealing with the loss of a loved one can be very difficult. Death can also be very cruel taking someone from this Earth way too soon and making them suffer as they make their journey to the other side. When this happens, you take time to mourn your loss. You don't ever truly get over it but eventually you learn how to cope without your loved one. You remember the good times, honor their memory, and go on living because that is what your loved one would want you to do. Some people are better equipped to deal with loss than others. There's no playbook on how to do it. One of the natural emotions is denial. You say to yourself “that's not true. I just spoke to them last week.” For most, you eventually come to accept the cruel fact that death is a part of life. But how long does it take to get to this point? Are some people in denial to the point that it didn't happen? Or think that they can actually bring someone back? For this episode of the podcast we are going to share a few stories of people who tried to cheat death and the lengths they would go through in order to do so. There is only one way to explain these stories that you are about to hear and that is: Some Weird. Warning: some language or themes may not be suitable for all ages. In this episode we’re taking a trip to pre-WWII Key West, Florida - a place beyond laws, full of unbelievable characters. One of these characters is Count Carl von Cosel (born Karl Tanzler), an eccentric x-ray technician that falls head-over-heels in love with a young Latina beauty named Elena Hoyos. Problem is, she has tuberculosis, and in the 1930s this was pretty much a death wish. However, von Cosel’s obsessive love knows no bounds…even those of death. And the grim discovery Elena’s family and Key West police officials make in the Count’s house 7 years after Elena’s burial will shock the island, the nation, and the world. Have a care, friends—this one is gonna be a little icky. ________________________________________ Connect with us on social media: Facebook: www.facebook.com/aintitscary Twitter: @aintitscary Instagram: @aintitscary Patreon: www.patreon.com/aintitscary ___________________________________________ Thank you to our sponsors: BetterHelp - Special offer for Ain’t it Scary? listeners: Get 10% off your first month at www.betterhelp.com/aintitscary Audible - Get a FREE audiobook and 30-Day Free Trial at www.audibletrial.com/aintitscary BarkBox - Enjoy a FREE month of BarkBox on us when you sign up for a 6 or 12-month BarkBox subscription! **Trigger warning 24:45 - 27:10 graphic descriptions** Is there anything more fascinating than a good Florida Man story? Join us this week as Loren tells one of the most disturbing Florida stories we've heard yet- the tale of Carl Tanzler and his unwilling love. Mentally prepare yourselves, because you're gonna need it for this one. Carl Tanzler had many aliases. Born in Germany in 1877, he went by Georg Karl Tanzler, Carl Tanzler von Cosel, Carl von Cosel, and Count Carl Tanzler von Cosel. Our story really picks up in the spring of 1930m while he was working as a radiology technician with the Marine Hospital Service in Key West, Florida. There, he met a lovely, but very ill, young woman by the name of Maria Elena Milagro de Hoyos. She was his dream girl, and given that there is absolutely no confirmation of her returning those feelings, we have to assume that he was likely not her dream guy. His love for her was enduring, though she quickly passed from this world. This is where things take a really...disturbing turn. In 1940, the situation came to a head and Tanzler was arrested. What for? Tune in to hear the whole story! Wait to Panic is a weekly podcast where two longtime friends take turns sharing stories that just might make your skin crawl. On this episode of the world famous Sofa King Podcast, we take a poke at some disturbing history and explore the life and love of Carl Tanzler. If you don’t know who Tanzler was, here’s a sneak peek—he lived with the corpse of the girl he obsessed over for seven years. But more on that later… Carl Tanzler was born to a wealthy family in Germany in 1877. As a young adult, he studied many differing subjects and traveled a lot. In fact, he found himself in Australia when World War I broke out, and he (like all other Germans) found himself living in a prisoner of war camp until the end of the war. He tried to escape once, but was finally released to the Netherlands at the end of the war. Eventually, Tanzler made his way to Florida to live with his sister after marrying a woman in Germany and fathering two kids. He took a job as a radiology technician in 1927 at a Marine Hospital in Key West. He lived apart from his wife and kids to do this job, but still supported them financially. Oh, and did I mention that when he was a child, he was visited by the ghost of Countess Anna Constantia von Cosel who told him one day he would find true love in a dark haired beauty? Well he did, and he did. Because a few years after taking his job, he met Elena De Hoyos, a twenty-one year old tuberculosis patient. He fell madly in love with her and did everything he could to find her a cure, all the while giving her gifts and jewelry and professing his love, which she didn’t reciprocate. To heal her, he did radical, fringe experiments that the hospital didn’t know about, took an X-Ray machine back to her house, and gave her all sorts of potions and elixirs meant to find a cure. Spoiler alert: it didn’t work. She died of TB, and Carl Tanzler paid for a lavish mausoleum to be built for her. He’d skip work nights to sit near her grave and sing her dark songs, and eventually she told him through the door to take her body home. So, like you do, he did. He took her home on a red child’s wagon and reinforced her corpse for endurance and love making. He lived with her for 7 years. So what finally got Carl Tanzler caught? How did he preserve her two year old corpse once he got it home? What scheme did he have to infuse her body with cosmic radiation to bring her back to life like the bride of Frankenstein? How did he get her hair? How did he have sex with the body? Why did the city put her body on display for a dollar a pop? What did his wife think of all of this? What did he blow up with dynamite before leaving Key West? Listen, laugh, learn.   Visit our Sources: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Tanzler https://www.buzzfeed.com/agh/carl-tanzler-elena-hoyos-mummy-corpse-florida-key-west https://www.thevintagenews.com/2018/10/09/carl-tanzler/ https://www.historicmysteries.com/carl-tanzler-in-love-with-the-dead/ https://mind-blowingfacts.com/carl-tanzler-corpse/ https://rare.us/people/carl-tanzler-elena-hoyos-florida/ https://allthatsinteresting.com/carl-tanzler https://www.ranker.com/list/carl-tanzler-key-west-story/cheryl-adams-richkoff

As her skin began to decompose, he replaced it with silk cloth that had been soaked in wax and plaster. When her hair fell out, he fashioned a wig using her real hair which he was able to obtain after her funeral. He filled her dead and decaying body with rags in order to try and keep her original form and he dressed his corpse girlfriend in her own clothing, stockings, jewelry, and gloves. He also used copious amounts of perfume, disinfectants, and preserving agents to mask the odor and slow the decomposition of the body. He had to – because he kept her body in his own bed. IN THIS EPISODE: Legend has it a ghost told the building’s architect to take the job. Love is indeed a spleanded thing...unless the other person is dead! Hour 1 we welcome filmmaker Ronni Thomas, who will be telling the macabre tale of Count Carl von Cosel who lived with a corpse for seven years, No Place for the Living. Hour 2 Erich von Däniken set off a firestorm in the late-’60s with the release of his classic Chariots of the Gods, which set forth the proposition that man had his origins in the stars and that his development has been aided by extraterrestrials. Where did von Däniken’s extraordinary notions come? He writes in the preface to the anniversary edition of Chariots of the Gods, “I come from a very Catholic family in Switzerland and my father decided that I would have a theologically-oriented education. So he enrolled 16-year old Erich at Collège St-Michel, a Jesuit boarding school in Fribourg, Switzerland. At that time, my conception of God was magnificent and simultaneously incomprehensible – and has remained so to this day. I always thought God – who or what that was – had to exhibit some minimum features. The true God would be flawless and could do no wrong. He would have to be omnipresent and need no vehicle to get from point A to point B. In particular, God would be timeless. God could not be something that did experiments and then must wait to see what resulted. Those were the thoughts my confused 16-year old brain had about God,” he writes.
