JEDEN. PREIS. Viel Spaß! (The True Story Behind ‘Alias Grace') *** A woman finds a ghostly companion in her bed – every night. (Possibly Friendly Entity) *** A man's love for a woman lasts even past her death, to the point of his living with her corpse. "Florida, we need to have a talk." jokes Stephen as this week's story takes us to Key West where nothing ever wild happens! Just kidding, because even if nothing else weird ever happened in Key West this story would be enough to forever mark the city. It's certainly got both Christi and Stephen shaking in their boots as there's a level of macabre in this, very much true story, that's unforgettably creepy to its very core. We're of course talking about radiologist Carl Tanzler and his corpse bride. Often referred to as Count Carl von Cosel (a name and title he made up and gave himself), Tanzler became deeply committed to pursuing a patient of his after recalling a dream where his true love looked exactly like her. Unfortunately for Tanzler she passed away from tuberculosis, and unfortunately for her that didn't stop Tanzler. After two years of longing for his unrealized love, he took matter into his own hands and dug up her remains, hellbent on making her his wife. The many years it took to uncover Tanzler's sick escapades resulted in the situation only growing weirder, but you'll have to tune-in to discover the sordid details that even your spooky minded hosts struggle to fully accept is real.Quotes“So he just makes stuff up. He's just like, 'Eh, I think I'm gonna be a Count,' which by the way from this point forward I would like you to refer to me as Baroness, because uh, I'm a Baroness!” (11:10-11:18 | Christi)“So, Carl visits her daily and every night he continues to call here and propose over the phone. Bitch are you gonna tell him? She's dead boy, she ain't answering!." (15:40-15:54 | Christi & Stephen)“No I can relate because what always freaked me out was the Tooth Fairy." (34:30-34:33 | Stephen)“Fuck you Carl! Fuck you Carl! Alright so we're going to call this Stephen Give too Many Fucks.” (40:11-40:17 | Christi & Stephen)  LinksSend us your ghost or weird stories here: beyondthenormpod@gmail.comSubscribe to our Patreon: www.patreon.com/BeyondtheNormPodcastFollow Christi on IG: www.instagram.com/christilukasiakFollow Stephen on IG: www.instagram.com/s_c_mayo Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Welcome to another chilling edition of "Alex's Apparitions" on the Mysterious Goings On podcast. Tonight, we delve deep into the eerie annals of history with the tale of Georg Carl Tänzler, or as he later fancied himself, "Count Carl von Cosel". Born in Dresden, 1877, this radiology technologist claimed visions from an ancestor revealing his true love—a dark-haired woman. His life took a macabre turn in 1930, in Key West, when he met Elena Milagro de Hoyos, setting the stage for a tale of obsession that blurred the lines between love and madness. Due to circumstances beyond our control we are unable to record for a couple of weeks, btu take heart. We are rereleasing two of our favorite episodes remastered. This story has everything you've come to love in our show: a dead body, an insane individual, ghosts and the complete breaking of Rubin and Josh; not to mention our good friend Kat.  This week starts our two part episode about Carl Tanzler, AKA Count Carl von Cosel and his deeply disturbing infatuation with the young Cuban girl: Elena Milagro Hoyos. In episode one, we discuss the one sided love affair that would lead to some seriously shady stuff to follow. This is one of Key West's most enduring legends. We also have a special guest with us as friend of the show Kat joins us to give her unique viewpoint. Hold on to your butts ladies and gentlemen, as it gets quite weird from here. Oh, and apparently I (Don) have been told that this episode needs a trigger warning, as it does deal heavily in the topic of consent... Enjoy!

The story of Elena Hoyos and the man who called himself Count Carl von Cosel is a Key West legend. It's a true story if unbelievable in its macabre details. Karl Tanzler, though everybody still refers to him as Von Cosel showed up in Key West in the 1920s where he worked as a radiologist at the local hospital. That's where he met Elena Hoyos. She was a beautiful young Cuban-American woman who had tuberculosis. Von Cosel fell in love with her, and he treated her for her illness. When the treatments did not work and she died that didn't end their story. Two years later, he took her body from the mausoleum and lived with it.... For seven years. My Special Guest is Ben Harrison Ben Harrison is the author of Undying Love, a shocking true Key West story of a passion that defied death. In writing this definitive and mesmerising tale of the most obsessive love imaginable, Ben Harrison did his homework thoroughly, studying numerous press accounts from the 1930s as well as the von Cosel memoir. What makes Undying Love so special are the interviews Ben conducted with those old enough to have known the story participants and the way things were in Key West during the 1930s... Ben has been a guest on The Howard Stern Show, This American Life, Dr. Demento, The Dick Cavett Show and more. Winner of the Adeline Turner Award for Outstanding Performing Artist, he has recorded ten studio albums and is currently working on his fourth full-length theatre musical. "Ben Harrison separates fact from myth and untangles the thread of intrigue in this gothic tale of obsessive love and melancholy madness." Danny Elfman, musician, composer, record producer, and actor.  "This story has it all. Obsession, madness, even a sweet May December romance." Florida Sun Sentinel Karl Tanzler Karl Tanzler, also known as Count Carl von Cosel, was a radiologist in Key West, Florida, who developed an obsession for one of his patients, Elena Milagro Hoyos. The beautiful young woman died from tuberculosis in 1931. With her parents' permission von Cosel had an above ground mausoleum built for her. He visited the tomb every night and by 1933 he had taken the body home. Elena Hoyos Elena de Hoyos came from a small family. They couldn't afford an elaborate funeral after her death, her father made cigars and her mother was a maid. The Count made sure that Elena received a proper burial instead of the shoddy wooden box, which was the plan according to her family. Tanzler had Elena buried in a huge mausoleum, equipped with lighting, electricity, and a telephone connected to Elena's grave. In this episode, you will be able to: 1. Delve into the story of The Count and Elena, who they were and how their stories became entangled 2. Explore the responses from the local and wider community, family and friends 3. Hear from Ben Harrison on the subject who spent years researching and interviewing people around this case 4. Gain an understanding of the historical backdrop of Key West at the time. Carl Tanzler, also known as Count Carl von Cosel, was a German-born radiology technician who became famous for his bizarre and disturbing obsession with a young woman named Elena "Helen" Milagro de Hoyos. In 1931, de Hoyos, who was suffering from tuberculosis, became Tanzler's patient at the U.S. Marine Hospital in Key West, Florida. Tanzler became convinced that de Hoyos was his true love and believed that he could cure her using his unconventional methods, which included various experimental treatments and homemade medical devices.Despite his efforts, de Hoyos eventually succumbed to her illness in October 1931. However, Tanzler's obsession did not end with her death. He secretly removed her body from the mausoleum and transported it to his home, where he attempted to preserve her using wax, plaster, and other preservation techniques. His case received widespread media attention and over 6,000 people came to view her body. Sources:https://horrorobsessive.com/2022/02/04/a-doctors-unhealthy-obsession-the-story-of-carl-tanzler-and-elena-de-hoyos/https://historycollection.com/the-real-corpse-bride-carl-tanzlers-horrifying-obsession/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_TanzlerSupport the showThanks for listening! And so it begins, an episode one year in the making. Enjoy!

Death is a part of life. Although they are polar opposites you can't have one without the other. Dealing with the loss of a loved one can be very difficult. Death can also be very cruel taking someone from this Earth way too soon and making them suffer as they make their journey to the other side. When this happens, you take time to mourn your loss. You don't ever truly get over it but eventually you learn how to cope without your loved one. You remember the good times, honor their memory, and go on living because that is what your loved one would want you to do. Some people are better equipped to deal with loss than others. There's no playbook on how to do it. One of the natural emotions is denial. You say to yourself “that's not true. I just spoke to them last week.” For most, you eventually come to accept the cruel fact that death is a part of life. But how long does it take to get to this point? Are some people in denial to the point that it didn't happen? Or think that they can actually bring someone back? For this episode of the podcast we are going to share a few stories of people who tried to cheat death and the lengths they would go through in order to do so. There is only one way to explain these stories that you are about to hear and that is: Some Weird. Warning: some language or themes may not be suitable for all ages.
