Are you a witch or are you a fairy, or are you the wife of Michael Cleary? Bridget Cleary, born Bridget Boland, is considered to be the last "witch" burned alive in Ireland. Believed to be abducted by fairies and replaced with a changeling, Bridget was murdered by her husband Michael in 1895. Trigger warning: Violent language @ min 35:00 - 35:15 “Are you Bridget Boland, wife of Michael Cleary, in the name of God?” “I am Bridget Boland, daughter of Patrick Boland, in the name of God.” The death of Bridget Cleary, nee Boland, is known as "the last witch burned in Ireland" due to the circumstances surrounding her death in 1895. On March 15, 1895, Bridget, the wife of cooper Michael Cleary, was burned to death by her husband and family members under the suspicion that she was possessed by a faerie. In truth, she was nothing more than the tragic victim of illness and superstition. Join us this week as Loren tells Bridget's horrifyingly tragic tale and how she became immortalized in a child's rhyme- "Are you a witch, or are you a faerie, or are you the wife of Michael Cleary?" I like having a dedicated app for you even better. Thanks for the great work and giving me a soundtrack for my life. ??" Craig Backus emailed: "Marc, I've been wondering about listening to and supporting my favorite artists.... I have a pretty wide taste in music, and I often buy albums (albeit from Apple) but the whole album.... Since I'm a prime member, I keep getting ads from Amazon Music that their app includes access to millions of songs for $10 a month! I'm sure artists see some benefit from it, but I don't know. For example, I saw that Lucinda Williams has a new album out. I've never actually bought any of her music, but have heard her many times on Tom Petty radio on SiriusXM. I went to her website to get a feel for how she sells music, and she's basically included links to every music streaming and download site. I thought that artists might make more from direct sales, but it doesn't seem like they are set up for that. Perhaps it's more cost-prohibitive to have someone process orders than to just wait for streaming royalties and to go out on tour? I don't know...... I'd be interested in knowing what you think....... PS I really loved the discovery of "Jiggy" last week. The combination of Celtic music with world beats is different and pretty cool. I bet it will be coming to a scifi show soon! Perhaps a new bar beyond the ring in the Expanse?"

I usually end up listening to the podcast while I walk too and from work at the Talkeenta Public Library in Talkeetna, Alaska. On a clear day I get a wonderful view of Denali while I walk. Thanks for the podcast, keep up the good work!" Michael Garries emailed a photo: "Hey Marc! I love listening to your podcast while I study! I'm taking calculus right now (my least favorite subject by far) and your perfect blend of the various Celtic subgenres really helps to keep me focused from distractions. Keep up the good work and thank you for broadcasting the beauty of Irish and Celtic culture every month, we all appreciate it!" Lily F Bentley replied to a Celtic Music Magazine newsletter: "Hello, and thank you for getting in touch! Thanks also for the MP3s, which all successfully downloaded. I’m still working through them, but so far Burning Bridget Cleary is standing out as a favourite. And more generally, I must say that as a UK-based listener, I’m really enjoying discovering Celtic musicians from further afield. It’s just amazing how much is out there that you’ll never hear on the British touring circuit. If I may return the favour with just a couple of recommendations of my own... Gerry O’Reilly has done some beautiful covers of traditional Irish songs, which can be found here. And chances are you’ll know this one already, but Talitha MacKenzie’s live performance of ‘Fear a Bhata’ is magical. Really looking forward to hearing more from the podcast, and thanks for all the time you put into to curating the playlists - it really is appreciated, and I will be spreading the word!"

I am a Ships Captain and come from Scourie (pronounced SCOWRIE) just up the coast from the Isle of Skye. I presently supervise the shipbuilding of the world’s largest stainless steel chemical tankers in Shanghai China. Just small enough to squeeze through the “old” Panama canal. ( 600 foot long and 106 foot wide) I could not help but smile when I listened to your discussions regarding the Skye midges which you encountered last summer. They are at their worst when peat cutting in the highlands. I discovered your podcast last March when I decided to try and change my lifestyle after my best friend died from a heart attack. Thanks to your great selection of music which I listen to every morning/night as I speed walk the 40 minutes from my Chinese home to the shipyard. I have now lost 20Kg ( 20% of my original body weight) and got my general health in order. I am now completing marathons instead of lying on the sofa drinking beer. It's on Amazon Video (free if you have Prime and I think $1.99 per episode without). It consists of four 22 minute episodes, centered around a different theme each, where different people tell tales of the Celtic nations. They cover things from fairies to dragons and quite a few that I've never heard of. It's pretty entertaining and informative." Send me pictures of what you're doing or picture of one of your travels to Ireland or Scotland John Thompson wrote: Hey Marc, Two more excellent shows! I was surprised to hear you play Tam Lin by Coyote Run, although it was a great choice for Halloween. CR was an awesome band. They played the PA Ren Faire a lot. Between Wick and Flame is a fantastic album. They've got a bunch but two of my other favorites would be Places and Coyote Run Pleads the 5th. If there's any chance you can get a hold of some tunes from either one of those it would be great for your listeners. The fiddle special was amazing! Glad you got Burning Bridget Cleary in there. “Oh My Little Darling/Fire on the Mountain” by Burning Bridget Cleary from Pressed For Time -- also not your typical celtic music. But it definitely showcases their talent. I'm happy to help support this incredible podcast on Patreon. Keep up the great work! You continue to do a fantastic job with the podcast, and I’m eagerly awaiting the upcoming Celtic Halloween show. I’ve got my own “Samhain 2015” playlist put together and I’d love to get your opinion of it. Once again thank you so much for putting out all that phenomenal Celtic music for us all to enjoy. Slainte! Laurie Gardner wrote: Hello Marc! I am listening to one of your shows at the moment and decided to write you a quick note to say how much I enjoy your podcast. The music is always excellent. I studied traditional music as a teenager and sang with some wonderful artists. Even though I did not continue singing, (in public) I was captivated by Scottish music and tradition and still love listening and singing folk music. Your show has been the perfect way for me to stay connected to the traditional music world. For the past 8 years my husband and I have spent 2 weeks a year in the UK. We have been to such wonderful places. I love that you help more people visit as part of your dedication to a beautiful musical style. Thank you. The picture is from our most recent trip to the highlands. From the walls of the ruin of Kilchurn Castle on Loch Awe in Dalmally. A gorgeous little place, well worth adding to one of your tours. I connected on Facebook with a gentleman named Kenny Grey who has a photographic business called Island Images. He and Krissy, his fiancée are amazing people and his pictures of the area are splendid. We had a great meal and pints of local ale at a coaching inn in Dalmally that could work for a group: http://www.glenorchylodge.co.uk . It has an excellent kitchen and a sweet game room style pub, a MacLeod behind the bar. If you get there tell him the Canadian couple from Ottawa say hi. Have a wonderful day! Laurie P.S. I typically put your show on while I bake or prepare food, especially long haul dishes like meatballs or breaded chicken. And also while editing photographs. Do it! I’m not saying you should join me on one of my Celtic Invasion Vacations. I’m not saying you should join another tour group. But travel. Go. Right now. Mark Twain wrote: “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.” Traveling will change your life for the better forever. Stop waiting for the “right moment”. Start planning now. If you enjoy my music, then join me on a Celtic Invasion of another Celtic country. CeltiSode 2010!Happy (Belated) St. Patrick's Day, Everyone!!First off, let me please humbly apologize for the HUGE delay that this episode has weathered. Thank you so much for your patience! I truly hope you find the show well worth the wait. :):) Whether you hear this on St. Paddy's itself or tune in during any other time of the year, I hope this day brings nothing but joy to you and yours, and that you enjoy this slightly super-sized episode as much as I do. (And that's after listening to it a million times during its arrangement, so that's saying something! ;D)This show is chock-full of fantastic music, made by some unbelievably skilled & gifted musicians! Some of this is work I've collected over many, many years (through places like myriad renaissance festivals, Thistle & Shamrock shows, and a good few Celtic festivals), while other pieces were acquired more recently; explicitly for play on this show. Celtic music has been a part of my heart for as long as I can remember, and I hope its soulfulness, passion and playfulness always will. :)Finding and playing the best of pod-safe Celtic music for you seems a superb way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day (musically speaking)- but for me, this music can make any day of the year an occasion. Plus, what a gift! I have found more phenomenal music in searching for pieces for this podcast than I can count! What a delight to've found sublime chanteuses like Maria Dunn, Beth Patterson and the ladies of Maidens IV!! And what a blessing to be able to share such personal favorites as The Rogues & Lothlorien, as well as a more recent favorite; the enthralling, enchanting power of Omnia! Each of these pieces hold their own magic and beauty, whether it be sweet & lilting or raucous and irreverent. And don't just relegate this lovely brand of tune-age to St. Paddy's! Celtic music goes beautifully at pubs, renaissance fairs, faerie-themed events, barn dances, and all kinds of events where merry-making is called for- even funerals on occasion- so keep it in mind the next time you go out with family & friends!Whether you're Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Manx or Scots-Irish (like yours truly), if you're English, German, Italian, Asian, Greek, Indian, American, Black Irish or French, may the luck of the Irish always be with you, and may you find your own pot of gold in pleasures big and small on this clover-filled, merrily-jigging day! (Just be careful with the Guinness, Harp Lager & Goldschläger, please! We want you around to celebrate the NEXT St. Paddy's, too! ;D)Now let me pick my fiddle back up again, and have a merry St. Pat's!! (Or whatever day you choose to celebrate it on. ;))Track List1. Dougie Maclean - Caledonia2. Anne Roos - Considine's Grove3. Will Kriski - Kerry's Jig 4. Great Big Sea - Company of Fools 5. Sligo Rags - The Whiskey Never Lies 6. Blaggards - Irish RoverKey:Band name = Artist Website Song Title = Band MySpace (Both where available- both soon to come!)*Bold Italic = Background Accompaniment NOTE: For those of you who may not know, the beginning of the word "Celtic" is pronounced with a hard "c,"making the word sound like "ˈkel-tik."If you use it beginning with an "s" sound (or what's called "a soft c"), that refers to the pro. basketball team from Boston; not the groups of Indo-European peoples & languages predominantly found in Wales, Ireland & the Scottish Highlands. (Although other parts of the world still identify strongly with their Celtic roots, such as Caledonia in Spain, Newfoundland in Canada, Brittany in France, as well as much of the American south; especially those in and around the Appalachian & Rocky ountains.)Don't believe me? Listen to some of the folk music from these areas (including much of old as well as new American Country- from Bluegrass on), and see if you don't hear a Celtic lilt to many of fiddle tunes & melodies! I really mean it when I say in the show that there's so much good music made by these and other artists that I could create a whole other podcast (or two) from the tremendous work that's out there!!)Tapadh Leibh. all!Yours Forever in Song,DJ Selchie

Pat's!! (Or whatever day you choose to celebrate it on. ;))Track List:1.
