Michael Malloy—also known as Mike the Durable—is the closest thing history has to a real-life Rasputin. In 1930s New York, a group of small-time crooks hatched the dumbest insurance scam of all time: take out a life insurance policy on a local drunk and kill him for the payout. Simple, right? Except Malloy had the constitution of a cockroach. Poisoned drinks? He asked for another round. Antifreeze? Tasted just fine. Rotten oysters marinated in wood alcohol? Delicious. Even running him over with a taxi twice wasn't enough. In this episode of The Lesser Known People Podcast, we break down the hilariously stupid series of attempts to take Malloy out, the absurd perseverance of one very drunk man, and the ultimate downfall of the criminal "masterminds" behind the plot. If you love true crime, dark comedy, and stories so ridiculous they sound fake, this one's for you.
This episode is a blend of true crime and criminal ineptitude. We'll walk through the story of how a gaggle of NYC barflys in the early 20th century U.S. Prohibition Era conspired (very badly) to murder an Irish immigrant who would later be nicknamed "The Irish Rasputin" for his incredible survival of multiple attempts on his life. How did this all transpire, medically speaking? Michael Malloy was an unlikely superhero. And, maybe he didn't use his powers to better society. Alright, he really, really didn't use his powers for good.

The choice of libation, as always my darlings, is yours, so choose your poison accordingly… Alright, now for the game part how about every time I say alcohol that will be a single shot and every time I say Insurance, that will be a double shot. Now that the business end is out of the way we can jump headfirst into today's dark enigma… so don your best Sherlock gear, grab your big magnifying glass and let's dive into today's offering of The Man Who Just Wouldn't Die or The Plot To Kill Michael Malloy. The plot to kill Michael Malloy for life-insurance money seemed foolproof—until the conspirators actually tried it The plot was conceived over a round of drinks. One afternoon in July 1932, Francis Pasqua, Daniel Kriesberg and Tony Marino sat in Marino's eponymous speakeasy and raised their glasses, sealing their complicity, figuring the job was already half-finished. How difficult could it be to push Michael Malloy to drink himself to death? Every morning the old man showed up at Marino's place in the Bronx and requested “Another mornin's morning, if ya don't mind” in his muddled brogue; hours later he would pass out on the floor. For a while Marino had let Malloy drink on credit, but he no longer paid his tabs. “Business,” the saloonkeeper confided to Pasqua and Kriesberg, “is bad.”

There have been people in the world gifted with greater resilience that most. Call them survivors or just call them lucky. In this episode we tell the story of the multiple attempts to end the mad monk Ra-Ra-Ras-pu-tin lover of the … well, you know and of even more attempts to un-alive a poor, unfortunate man named Michael Malloy. One was targeted to end his growing power and influence over the rulers of pre-revolution Russia and the other was targeted for life insurance. Both were as tough as a carpenter … the bug not the builder. This will all make sense after you listen to this wild episode of The Some Weird Podcast. In New York City in 1933, during both the Great Depression and the Prohibition Era, a group of guys - Tony Marino, Daniel Kriesberg, Francis Pasqua, and Joseph Murphy - hatched a plot to kill Michael Malloy, a regular at the speakeasy that Marino owned, and collect on a few insurance policies that they were going to take out on him. After several failed attempts, they enlisted the help of Tough Tony Bastone and his sidekick Joseph Maglione, and later one even cab driver Harry Green and local doctor, Dr. Frank Manzella. It would seem that it was impossible to kill Iron Mike, as he came to be known.Sources for this episode:Wikipedia - New York Cityall that's interesting - The Curious Case of Michael Malloy - "Rasputin Of The Bronx"Smithsonian Magazine - The Man Who Wouldn't DieDrinking Cup - The legend of Mike Malloy and the Murder TrustTrivia Library - New York Gangs Murder Trust and Michael Malloy Parts 1-5Irish Central - Michael Malloy - the Irishman in The Bronx that could not be murderedThe True Crime Edition - The Murder Plot of "Iron" Mike MalloySupport the show

In the early 1930s, things were tough for many Americans. The Great Depression was underway, prohibition was going strong, and people found themselves struggling to keep jobs and desperate for money. In New York City, a group of men - later dubbed the Murder Trust - decided on a get rich quick scheme that involved taking out an expensive life insurance policy on an alcoholic man they knew, killing him, and collecting on the policy. Except their victim, Michael Malloy, was MUCH tougher than they thought. The Murder Trust tried some pretty crazy ways of murdering someone to make it look accidental - but there's a reason their victim was nicknamed Iron Man Mike.
The year is 1933. It's the Great Depression, the last year of prohibition, and alcoholism is widespread. This sets the scene for the case of Michael Malloy, otherwise known as "Iron Mike" and "Mike the Durable". Mike is an alcoholic who drinks 24/7...and he's also the target of a group of people known collectively as "The Murder Trust". Let's count how many attempts on his life that they made:1...2...3...4...5...and it goes on and on.Sources:1) https://the-line-up.com/bizarre-true-crime-cases-by-state-part-one2) https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/the-man-who-wouldnt-die-89417903/3) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Depression4) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gross_domestic_product5) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Malloy 6) https://www.thejournal.ie/mike-malloy-donegal-bronx-murder-trust-prohibition-depression-alcohol-2410813-Dec2015/
Hello and welcome back! Join us for this week's story in which a 1930's rag tag group assembles to commit a murder and cash in on a false insurance policy. What was thought to be a simple, fool-proof scheme proved to be the opposite. This story is full of the hardiness of life, sandwiches (weaponized and non-weaponized) and a charming, lovable Irishman who's love of life and refusal to die would set the stage for one of New York City's strangest murder plots. Pour yourself a drink and strap in because this one's a doozy!SOURCEhttps://www.amazon.com/House-Bizare-Killing-Michael-Berkley/dp/0425206785Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/this-ones-a-doozy/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Depression-era New York was a tough time for a guy just looking to get by. The pressure of feeding a family, the lack of available work, the poor conditions suffered from much of the work that was available and at the end of the day, you couldn't even relax with a drink or drown your sorrows in the bottom of a bottle. At least, not legally. Whilst laws attempted to stop people from drinking alcohol, the culture of the speakeasy ripped through the underground. It was a place where one could relax and unwind, listen to some live music, play some cards, or set up an insurance fraud with a few of the friendly locals. It was the latter that took place in a small dive in The Bronx over several months in 1933 that would highlight how desperate the times could really be. It would also prove to be one of the most catastrophic displays of disorganised crime that the 19th-century newspapers would ever write about in what was dubbed as New York's “most fantastic” murder. You guys. You're in for a real treat if you've never heard the tale of Michael Malloy. To call him durable is to vastly undersell this story. This dude not only survived about 67 attempts on his life, but did it while- let's just say more than heavily intoxicated! He is a true iron man.
