Acts 16 speaks of a disciple named Timothy – meaning “of value to God”. He was well recommended by the brethren. Timothy's mother, Lois, was a Jewess, but more importantly a faithful believer. Likewise, Timothy's – grandmother, Eunice, was also faithful – 2 Timothy 1 verse 5. As Timothy's father was a Greek Paul thought that it would be best for Timothy to be circumcised before travelling with himself and Silas. They visit the Galatian believers to strengthen their faith. Whilst attempting to preach the gospel in the province of Asia they were prevented from doing so. God had urgent work for the missionaries to do in Macedonia. They were given a vision of a man from Macedonia asking them for help. Many believe that the man in the vision was doctor Luke, since the pronouns in the chapter change when Luke joined them- see chapter 16:11. It is also interesting to think that Alexander the Great was a Macedonian who claimed to have a vision of the high priest of Israel and the 24 elders coming to meet him (see Zechariah 9). In Philippi, the capital of Macedonia, there were so few Jews that the city had no synagogue. It was by the riverside that Lydia, a lady from Thyatira, believed and was baptised. She was the first convert from that city. “Whose heart the Lord opened” describes the timeless operation of the spirit of God. It's a lovely description. Verses 16-24 describe a demented girl, said to be possessed by the python of Delphi, who follows Paul and Silas and claims that they are the servants of the most high God. After the girl was healed her owners, losing their source of income, had Paul and Silas arrested, beaten, placed in most uncomfortable stocks and cast into prison. Paul and Silas sang hymns of praise to the amazement of the prisoners and their jailor. The response of the Almighty was to a produce a strong earthquake that was felt throughout the city. It also released all the chains of the prisoners. The jailor fearing his prisoners had fled was about to take his own life. Paul called upon him to stop. He took Paul and Silas to his home and bathed their wounds (with their stripes he was healed – see Isaiah 53). The jailor and the believing adults of his household were baptised – the ecclesia was growing. In the morning the worried magistrates tell Paul and Silas to go. Paul says they have beaten the Apostles who are uncondemned Roman citizens. This made the magistrates even more fearful; but must have provided the ecclesia with a measure of protection. Acts 17 tells of Paul, Silas coming to Thessalonica (Luke seems to have stayed in Philippi for the next 7 years), where the preaching had some measure of success until the jealous Jews stirred up the rabble of the city and attacked the house of Jason where Paul and his companions were lodged. Jason is beaten, but the multitude want Paul's blood. The enraged mob claim that Paul has turned the Roman world upside down with his preaching – and indeed he had done that. After taking money for security Paul and his company are allowed to depart. In verses 10-12 we hear that they next come to Berea where the people of that city are more noble of heart as they daily search the Scriptures to see whether what the Apostles claimed was in fact what the Scriptures taught. But sadly, true to form, the unbelieving Jews from Thessalonica come and bring persecution with them. Paul is hurried away from the hostile Jews and brought by sea to Athens. Whilst waiting for Timothy and Silas Paul is stirred by the extent of the idolatry of the city. Paul speaks to the philosophers of the Epicurean and Stoic persuasions about Jesus and the resurrection – the Greeks supposed he was talking of Jesus (a male god) and Anastasis (a female god). Paul is taken to Areopagus (also called Mars Hill) and placed on trial for blasphemy (a charge that carried the death sentence if he is found guilty). Paul commences to preach to them based on an altar that he finds with the inscription “to the unknown god”. He says that they are ignorantly worshipping this god. From the Greek poets Paul tells them that this God made the world and everything in it. He quotes from several of their poets – including the well known Hymn to Zeus (their chief god). But his primary appeal was for them to forsake idolatry and polytheism and embrace the One True God by believing that this God will judge those who do not repent and turn to Him. The majority response is to dismiss Paul's claims as they compare the Apostle to a seed picking bird, which gathers bits and pieces from everywhere. Nonetheless one Dionysius, an Areopagite and a woman named Damaris and a few others become believers. Some said they would listen to Paul another time – but they missed the opportunity for Paul never returned to Athens: compare Ephesians 5 verse 16.
Numbers 27 Among the final duties of Moses was dealing with a family anomaly and the appointment and preparation of Joshua to assume his role. This chapter addresses these two things. V.1-11 – In the orders for the division of the land, just given (Num. 26), no provision had been made for females, in case of failure of male issue. The five daughters of Zelophehad, therefore, considered themselves as destitute, having neither father nor brother, and feeling themselves entirely overlooked agreed to refer the case to Moses and the rulers, whether it were not equitable that they should inherit their father's portion. This led to the enactment of an additional law to the civil code of Israel, which satisfactorily ascertained and amply secured the right of succession in cases of inheritance. This law, which is as reasonable as it is just, stands thus: 1. On the demise of the father, the estate descends to the sons. 2. If there be no son, the daughters succeed. 3. If there be no daughter, the brothers of the deceased inherit. 4. If there be no brethren, or paternal uncles, the estate goes to the grand uncles, or brothers of his father. 5. If there be no grand uncles, then the nearest of kin succeeds to the inheritance. The daughters of Zelophehad appear again in Num. 36:1-12. V.12-23 – Moses was allowed one view of the land promised to Abraham before his death. This raised the issue of who would replace him as leader of the nation. His question is answered by Yahweh in the appointment of Joshua. Proverbs 19 Prov. 19:1 – “Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.” Poverty and integrity do not always go hand in hand. In fact, sometimes poverty produces a perversity that blames God for its condition; V.3 – “The foolishness of man perverteth his way: and his heart fretteth against Yahweh.” The rich have friends (V.6), but nobody wants to know the poor man (V.4,7), except “the king's son” – V.17; Ps. 72:12-14. Having begun with “integrity” in V.1, there is an emphasis in this chapter on the scourge of false witnesses – V.5,9,28. Nothing is more harmful than the peddling of lies and rumors. Philippians 3 Phil. 3:2 – “Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision” (katatomē – cutting off; mutilation = circumcision). Paul warns against Judaisers who worked surreptitiously to undermine his influence. That the term ‘dog' could be used of them indicates how unruly and vicious their behavior was. The term dog also is used to denote a person that is shameless, impudent, malignant, snarling, dissatisfied, and contentious, and is evidently so employed here. Paul acknowledges that he had acted like them in the past, but had been rescued from it by Christ's intervention (V.3-9). His rescue had been a ‘resurrection' to a new life in Christ (V.10), but one that brought sufferings and persecution such as he had dealt out to believers. He looked for a better “resurrection” – the word in V.11 is exanastasis – a rising from death (but to be given eternal life), hence, the prefix. Anastasis is about raising the dead to mortal life. Paul knows that his total commitment to Christ after his conversion in ‘repayment' for his persecuting past will lead to eternal life (1 Cor. 9:16-18; 15:8-10). V.12-17 – But Paul is careful not to wallow in the past as there was much to do, and there were many handicaps, not the least of these human nature to which some had capitulated (V.18-19). In a series of engaging sentences well translated by Weymouth, Paul set forth his goals – V.12-14 – “I do not say that I have already won the race or have already reached perfection. But I am pressing on, striving to lay hold of the prize for which also Christ has laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not imagine that I have yet laid hold of it. But this one thing I do–forgetting everything which is past and stretching forward to what lies in front of me, with my eyes fixed on the goal I push on to secure the prize of God's heavenward call in Christ Jesus.” V.20 – “For our conversation (politeuma – citizenship) is in heaven,” hence, followers of Christ do not participate in politics on earth in any form. V.21 – “Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.” This is the “prize” of V.14. While there is nothing good in human nature, the KJV translation is deficient. A number of reliable translations have transform “the body of our humiliation.” Human nature routinely humiliates us by disease, regressive malfunction, transgression and an endless bias towards evil, and of course, ultimately death. We seek to receive the now “glorious body” of our Lord from him.

Join us as we share stories, tips, and laughs, offering a supportive space for anyone navigating life's twists and turns. Grab your drink of choice, no judgment, and let's embark on this journey together. This is Adulting with Autism. Hey, happy Saturday, and welcome back to the podcast. I got a question for you. Yeah, I know I'm asking you a question on a Saturday, so deal with it. How are you guys breathing? Are you breathing through your mouth? Are you breathing through your nose? I'll wait. If the answer is you're breathing through your mouth, you might need to listen to this episode. And why? Because breathing through your mouth can have an effect on your mental health, your metabolic function, your posture, and your mood and your anxiety. And no, we're not talking about meditation today. So zip it. We're talking about something that can help you overall in changing the way you sleep and function. You're supposed to be breathing through your nose. and I'll tell you why. Breathing through your nose is a common thing, not breathing through your mouth. You're losing valuable oxygen when you breathe through your mouth. Also, you're not getting enough oxygen to your brain when you breathe through your mouth. Number two, you're probably walking around sleep deprived and you're ruining your teeth when you breathe through your mouth, not breathe through your mouth, but breathe through your mouth. And you're probably pretty angry, like my son Z. My next guest, Anastasis Tzanis, is a nutrition therapist and a globally sought-after breathwork expert. He's helped countless individuals improve their mental, postural, and metabolic function through private consultations. So just changing your breath can change all those things. Things even olympic athletes breathe through their nose when they compete and they've been training all their lives to do this it's not something you can do overnight and you this is something you have to start with little by little and train your retrain your body it's not something then you can just slap some tape over your mouth, and go on about your day. It doesn't work that way. If it did, you wouldn't be doing it now, now would you? So sit back, actually listen to this because this might actually change your mood and you might learn a little something. You might actually be a little happier because he hasn't learned anything yet because I'm his mom. He don't listen. So listen to Mama April. since you're probably not listening to your parental unit and learn some things from our guest Anastasis. Hi, you can hear me now, right? I can see you now. All right. Sorry, it took me a little bit of time to unmute myself. But anyway, how are you? Good morning. I'm doing well. Thank you for coming on to my podcast. Thanks for inviting me. So can you tell everyone what you do and how you got into it? Sure. So what I do is I'm offering nutritional and breathing consultations. And they are primarily targeted for people that have chronic conditions. Some of them will be genetic with a genetic makeup, up or some would be like as a result of lifestyle challenges. So how can breathing affect chronic conditions? So breathing, as I'm sure everybody hearing us knows, is a key component of life. We come to this life taking our first breath and the time we stop breathing, it's probably when life is over. And in the process of going about life, this is a function of the body that will happen automatically. It is very important for how we go about life as it is a key contributing factor to how much energy we have. So we breathe because it is helping us produce more energy. Humans rely on the air, on oxygen in order to breathe. But we can breathe efficiently or less efficiently. And depending on how we breathe, it will have a knock-on effect on our metabolism, our nervous system, even our posture. How can breathing affect your posture? I never thought of that. So imagine you being in a sad place, me feeling grieving someone or feeling unhappy. What would your posture be like at the time? You probably will have rounded shoulders. You will be a little bit compromised. It will not be the same with when you are happy, when you're going about life, you know, in a more positive outlook. At the same time, how would your breathing be? You probably will be breathing more shallow when you're sad. Maybe it will not be there will be no rhythm in the way you breathe and maybe there will be like also like some abrupt changes in your breath so maybe there will be a big inhalation and then there will be a pause or no pause and in general they will like i said if we were to put it in a nutshell there would be no rhythm but this will also reflect reflect your posture and if you were to change your breathing at a time you would probably be forced to change the way you carry yourself. So another way you can think about it is if you think someone with a very strong kyphosis, someone like Quasimodo, rounded back, would you be thinking of this individual woman or a man be breathing well effortlessly? Or you would expect that he struggles with breath. He would probably run out of breath after running for a few meters. Oh, I have a question. So when people start to exercise and everybody is like, you can't breathe through your nose when you're exercising. Are you supposed to breathe through your nose or are you supposed to breathe through your mouth or is it a combination of both? The way we would breathe, again, will be to a big extent automatic. And it will be automatic, but at the same time, it will vary from one individual to the other. So the best way for the listeners to perceive that is to think of two extremes, two individuals. One being an Olympic athlete, someone that has trained all his life. Let's for simplicity say that he has been a runner. And on the other side, next to him, we have someone unfit, someone that never exercised. Maybe he's a bit overweight. And we set them both to run for the same distance, let's say 1,000 meters, one kilometer. How would you expect each of them to run? I would probably assume that the athlete may be running quite fast, but still breathing from the nose effortlessly and maintaining a good posture, bringing it back to his posture. The second individual would probably be using a lot more his mouth. Now with these two extremes in in mind we know that there is not one way to breathe, and that there might be a more ideal way or a less ideal way but in order to end up breathing in a more ideal way it will not happen just because someone told us to do so but it will be the result of training so if we want to be more like the first man the one that is running effortlessly, he is only able to do that because of all the hours of training that he has done. A lot of the times, people don't perceive running or swimming as breathing training, but it is very much so. So a cardiovascular exercise is a way of breath training. So just breathing in itself, we have to retrain ourselves just effortlessly to be able to breathe. Is this oversleeping as well? Exactly. You're touching on a very important point here, April. And that's because we are breathing not only during the day and during the night. And obviously during the day, we can be a lot more conscious of our breath. We cannot be all the time conscious as much as we may like. And as much as some people claim that we should, we cannot. I'm not paying attention to my breath now. I'm focusing on speaking with you. But in the night definitely we can you know we have way less awareness or no awareness at all of how we breathe but we still breathe and the way we breathe affects a lot our breath so our brain function and our body's function and in general the oxygenation of all of our organs so then again we cannot do things to encourage nasal breathing during sleep again something that some people will have to work towards, while others will find very easy. What kind of things can people do that are simple to kind of correct this? Because I know for my son, I noticed at nighttime he snores really badly. But he's always complaining that he's tired, even though he can sleep 10 to 12 hours. Very good point. And he talks on so many things at the moment, and I will try to touch on a couple of them. And one being that it's not the more we sleep, the more rested we will be. Similar with not the more we eat, the more energy we're going to have, right? So as far as the things that we can do to improve our quality of sleep and better breathing through the quality of sleep. The main thing is, as I kind of hinted from a previous answer, is that we need to encourage nasal breathing only. And in order to encourage nasal breathing, we have to make sure we don't mouth breathe. The only way to ensure that is by taping our mouth. So this may come as a surprise to some of people in the audience, but there are tapes that are very safe and they are specific for mouth taping. But any 3M microporous tape, medical tape, 2.5 millimeters will be big enough to help us seal our mouth and as a result breathe through our nose. At the risk, I don't want to oversimplify the whole thing, though, and say that everybody will find that easy or possible. A lot of people, because of their poor respiratory function, will find that suffocating. And again, in these cases, they will be not able to tolerate keeping their mouth shut for long periods of time. But it's only a matter of regular practice until they get used to that. The benefits that one will experience if he or she is to do that are many. But if I was to highlight some of the most obvious ones would be, like you said, snoring. It does not mean that snoring will be eliminated if someone tapes their mouth, but in some cases it does. And overall, the snoring reduces both in volume, because we cannot snore as loud from the nose as we can from the mouth. It will be like feeling more rested next morning. A lot of people experience the following. They wake up much sooner. And in the beginning, they feel confused because they are stuck in the paradigm of, I need to sleep more to get rested. But then they wake up and think, I woke up. Does that not make sense? I was hoping I would sleep more. No, no, no. You now got enough rest, the rest that you need. That's why your body wakes you up. And of course, less dehydration because obviously we lose water by keeping our mouth open, better mouth hygiene, less cavities in the mouth, better immune system, less likely to have blues and stuff as the nose functions as part of the immune system and a defense towards bacteria and viruses that are are in the air. There are more, but just these are some of the very evident ones. So if someone wanted to try to tape their mouth, would it be better to try it while they're awake and just kind of do it in little increments? Absolutely, yeah. Some people will not find any problem with taping their mouth first night and sleeping through the whole night with the tape on. But not everybody is on the same starting place. And for sure, nothing prevents people from taping their mouth for 20 minutes at a time while they are awake, while they go about doing stuff at home, cooking, reading book. And once they get accustomed to that and they realize that they are still alive after 20 minutes of no mouth breathing, then they can start trying at night. So once people start nasal breathing, how does that change the body and change their sanity? Very, very, very interesting question. Again, with each of these questions, we can go off and speak for hours. In a nutshell, in order for any organ, any system to function in our body, and I will try to keep it very basic in terms of the science, but I think even for all of our listeners, I think it would be good to bring it down to a little bit of the organs and systems level. It needs energy to function. Your liver needs energy to function. your brain. Actually, liver and brain are very energy expensive organs in the body. The heart, even the muscles, of course, which everybody would think of them in terms of exercise. But in order to produce energy, the organs need two things, oxygen and glucose or fatty acids. So these are the raw material. If one of the two is missing, then there will be less energy produced. used. So in order for us to encourage the good supply of oxygen into our organs, we need to ensure, okay, we take air in, which we do anyway, as we said, it's an automatic process, but the delivery is efficient. Now, in order for the delivery of the oxygen to be efficient into the organs, we need to have a good circulatory system. And if we have good circulation, of course, the supply will be more efficient. But we also need to control our blood gases. Now, we have three gases, one being oxygen. Everybody knows of that. The other one being carbon dioxide and the third one being nitric oxide. I will keep the analysis now at the basic level, but we can go a step further if you wish. Nitric oxide and carbon dioxide allow the oxygen to enter into to our cells to be used. So while everybody has plenty of oxygen into their blood, it does not mean that they have plenty of oxygen into their organs. And the more we breathe from the nose, we keep healthy levels of carbon dioxide and nitric oxide. And as a result, we are able to support our organs with oxygen. Let's say we have some people that like exercising. The more they manage to breathe from the nose during exercise, the more they will keep nitric oxide and carbon dioxide levels healthy, the more their muscles will have energy. Let's say someone is doing some mental cognitive activities. They are going through an exam. They are trying to think through a problem for work. If they want to be more efficient in terms of solving this problem, they need to supply their brain with oxygen. Again, they need to keep their mouth closed and maintain nasal breathing. So could this be the reason why a lot of people tend to overeat? They're not efficiently breathing. Get energy and so they're just overeating to compensate for the energy they actually need. Yeah. So this is a theory that has been put forward by a few people and there might be some validity in that. The interlink between breathing and eating is on many levels. On a very biochemical level, the diaphragm, which is one of the primary breathing organs, sits just above the digestive tract. So, you know, it attaches to the liver. It sits just above the small intestines. So the movement of the diaphragm facilitates better digestion. Also, we have another link is how the breathing affects the nervous system. Them who listening to to to us now does not know that when they are stressed their eating will not be disrupted some people will end up eating more some people will shut down their appetite but definitely stress will affect everybody's eating habits so if they are calmer if they are breathing more efficiently and as a result they are calmer they are more likely to make better eating choices whether we will be confusing and we are not efficient in terms of any we will be confusing the lack of energy because of lack of glucose with the lack of oxygen because of poor breathing that's like as i said something that you mentioned is a theory that is put forward by some people i think it is not confirmed by science and not something that i have seen necessarily in practice but this does not mean that necessarily it's not true so it might be as well. How can lack of breathing correctly affect our movement? So again, I like a lot of times to use parallelism, so I hope some of the listeners relate to that. And I would bring back this example that we said of the two individuals, the athlete and the unfit one. The way that one carries himself is going to be different from the other, and the way one breathes will be different from the other. If someone is staying in a calm state, his posture will be better. He will be able to pay attention to how he carries himself. The more unfit person will probably be panting more, breathing more heavily, also having a more stressed nervous system and as a result not be able to compose himself and carry himself efficiently enough. Actually, there were studies that they found that people that nasal breathe or people with good respiratory function, even if someone does not breathe nasally, if they have good respiratory capacity, they have better economy, running economy. Running economy is a term in science that is used in terms of how efficient one's movement is. It can be running economy is used also for swimmers. Of course, it's used for runners as well. So the better the breather is, the better his running economy. As a consequence of that, another study found that those that breathe efficiently, have good respiratory capacity, will also be less likely to be injured. Probably because of what we just said. If someone is carrying himself more efficiently, is paying attention to his posture, he's less likely to trip over or to do something that is not favorable. And as a result, injure himself. That is amazing what your breathing can do if you're breathing properly. For sure. So say you're a young adult and you have figured out your breathing has been terrible. Just by correcting your nasal breathing, could you reverse all the damage you've done to your body? So as i'm sure you know there are many reasons why someone's someone someone may have symptoms, in in in in in his life so a lot of the times we spoke earlier about sleep we may you mentioned about someone that wants to improve his cognitive functions these are not going to be affected just from breathing so sleep for example when i'm consulting people i may end up having to look into their nutrition. So to say that because of them improving breathing, that everything will be sorted out would probably be an exaggeration. But without a doubt, if breathing is really compromised, there will be an improvement in the symptoms and the individual will be a step closer to living a healthier life. The question in that case that a lot of the listeners may have is, so how do I become a better breather? And as you already hinted, nasal breathing more is a very good starting point. And I would definitely agree with that. One thing that is often perceived when people start hearing about the importance of nasal breathing is that they think that now that they know how good nasal breathing is, all All they have to do is just close their mouth. I want to highlight here that this is not that simple. You know, if that was the case, everybody that would have read a book on nasal breathing and its importance would be a nasal breather by now. But that's far from the case. It is in order for someone to be more of a nasal breather, and it's not a black or white, it's not that because you are aware of its importance or because you try www.atzanis.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/anastasistzanis/

Psalms 66 Thomson Translation of the Septuagint(i) 1 For the conclusion. An Ode of a Psalm. On the resurrection. Shout for God in triumphant strains, all ye lands. 2 Sing harmoniously to his name, ascribe glory to his praise. 3 Say to God, How awful are thy works! For the greatness of thy power, let thine enemies submit to thee. 4 Let all the earth worship thee. With music vocal and instrumental let them sing to thee; let them sing harmoniously to thy name. 5 Come and see the works of God! He is awful in counsels touching the sons of men. 6 He it is who turned the sea into dry land; that they might march on foot through a flood. There let us rejoice in him 7 who ruleth by his everlasting power. His eyes look down on the nations. Let not the rebellious exalt themselves. 8 Bless our God, ye nations; and cause the sound of his praise to be heard. 9 He it is who hath kept my soul alive; and hath not given my feet to the briny deep. 10 For thou, God, didst prove us, thou hast tried us as silver is tried. 11 Thou didst bring us into the net: thou didst lay affliction on our back: 12 thou didst mount men over our heads; we have passed through fire and water. But thou hast brought us to a place of rest. 13 I will go to thy house with whole burnt offerings: To thee I will perform my vows; 14 which my lips have enjoined; and which my mouth spoke in my affliction. 15 To thee I will offer whole burnt offerings; full of marrow, with frankincense and rams. To thee I will sacrifice bullocks and goats. 16 Come, hearken, all ye who fear God, and I will tell you what he hath done for my soul. 17 To him I uttered a cry with my mouth; and with my tongue repeated this aloud. 18 If I have regarded iniquity in my heart; let not the Lord hearken. 19 For this cause God hearkened to me: he attended to the sound of my prayer. 20 Blessed be God who hath not rejected my prayer; nor turned away his mercy from me. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/maranatha-ministries/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/maranatha-ministries/support

Loren Cunningham, founder of Youth With A Mission (YWAM), passed away on October 6, 2023. News of his passing was particularly difficult for MANY former members (YWAMers) because he escaped a long-overdue reckoning to account for the years of exploitation, manipulation, and spiritual and financial abuse he designed and presided over throughout the decades of Youth With A Mission's history. Tracey and Sharon share their own experiences with this systemic model of abuse and manipulation due to the close ties between Keith Green and Loren Cunningham and between Last Days Ministries and Youth With a Mission back in the early 1980's. Loren Cunningham exploited both youth and nations with a program that functioned much more like a multi-level marketing scheme (MLM) than a true ministry. We share the dark side of his ‘legacy' that you won't often hear because Loren Cunningham and other high-level YWAM leaders worked hard to remove and silence people and bury and hide important and heart-breaking stories of abuse and corruption. Thursday, 8 June 2023 Then certain Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him. And some said, “What does this babbler want to say?” Others said, “He seems to be a proclaimer of foreign gods,” because he preached to them Jesus and the resurrection. Acts 17:18 In the previous verse, it noted that Paul met in the marketplace daily with those who happened to be there. That would surely be those he met with in the synagogue. But while meeting them, others became curious about what he was saying. That is seen beginning with the words, “Then certain Epicurean and Stoic philosophers.” Athens was the place where the great philosophers gathered to contemplate the various issues that affected man such as God or gods, nature, the state of man, reason, etc. They thought that the search for wisdom was the highest form of existence. This is what Paul alludes to in 1 Corinthians 1 – “For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.” 1 Corinthians 1:22-25 Albert Barnes gives a detailed description of the Epicureans and Stoics – Of the Epicureans - This sect of philosophers was so named from Epicurus, who lived about 300 years before the Christian era. They denied that the world was created by God, and that the gods exercised any care or providence over human affairs, and also the immortality of the soul. Against these positions of the sect Paul directed his main argument in proving that the world was created and governed by God. One of the distinguishing doctrines of Epicurus was that pleasure was the summum bonum, or chief good, and that virtue was to be practiced only as it contributed to pleasure. By pleasure, however, Epicurus did not mean sensual and groveling appetites and degraded vices, but rational pleasure, properly regulated and governed. See Good's "Book of Nature." But whatever his views were, it is certain that his followers had embraced the doctrine that the pleasures of sense were to be practiced without restraint. Both in principle and practice, therefore, they devoted themselves to a life of gaiety and sensuality, and sought happiness only in indolence, effeminacy, and voluptuousness. Confident in the belief that the world was not under the administration of a God of justice, they gave themselves up to the indulgence of every passion the infidels of their time, and the exact example of the frivolous and fashionable multitudes of all times, that live without God, and that seek pleasure as their chief good. And of the Stoics - This was a sect of philosophers, so named from the Greek στοά stoa, a porch or portico, because Zeno, the founder of the sect, held his school and taught in a porch, in the city of Athens. Zeno was born in the island of Cyprus, but the greater part of his life was spent at Athens in teaching philosophy. After having taught publicly 48 years, he died at the age of 96, that is, 264 years before Christ. The doctrines of the sect were, that the universe was created by God; that all things were fixed by Fate; that even God was under the dominion of fatal necessity; that the Fates were to be submitted to; that the passions and affections were to be suppressed and restrained; that happiness consisted in the insensibility of the soul to pain; and that a man should gain an absolute mastery over all the passions and affections of his nature. They were stern in their views of virtue, and, like the Pharisees, prided themselves on their own righteousness. They supposed that matter was eternal, and that God was either the animating principle or soul of the world, or that all things were a part of God. They fluctuated much in their views of a future state; some of them holding that the soul would exist only until the destruction of the universe, and others that it would finally be absorbed into the divine essence and become a part of God. It will be readily seen, therefore, with what pertinency Paul discoursed to them. The leading doctrines of both sects were met by him. The incorrect doctrines of both sects are addressed by Paul in his writings. As for them, it next says that they “encountered him.” The word is sumballó. It signifies “to throw together.” Hence, the meaning is to be derived from the surrounding context and can signify encounter, discuss, engage, ponder, etc. In this case, Paul is in the agora talking about faith in Christ, certainly highlighting His suffering and resurrection. While talking with those he met, the Epicureans and Stoics, who were probably there doing their own debating, would have heard Paul and wanted to know what he was discussing. As such, the word “engaged” is probably the intent, but the verb being imperfect gives the sense of “were engaging him.” In the process of engaging with him, it next says, “And some said.” Again, the verb is imperfect, “And some were saying.” It is obvious that in hearing Paul's words and comparing them to their own ideas about life, death, suffering, and so forth, they were both curious and yet somewhat contemptuous. Therefore, they questioned, “What does this babbler want to say?” The word translated as “babbler,” spermologos, is found only here. It literally translates as “seed-picker.” One can think of a crow picking up seeds, flitting about, and squawking without any sense of rhyme or reason. Figuratively, it would be a person who is talkative and opinionated and who picks up scraps of knowledge and sets them forth in a willy-nilly fashion. As for the verb, the mood is optative and so the thought is something like, “What is this seed-picker desiring to say.” In other words, what Paul is saying isn't making sense to them. To them, he was putting out irrational ideas. Suffering? Resurrection? What he was saying wasn't forming any cohesive thoughts in their minds. Because of this, others who heard and had an incorrect idea of his discourse spoke up. It literally reads, “and others.” This means “other than the Epicureans and Stoics.” They were saying, “He seems to be a proclaimer of foreign gods.” Here is another word found only here in Scripture, kataggeleus. It signifies a herald. To them, Paul was seemingly speaking about two things. Therefore, they used the plural word, daimonion, or gods. These two things are explained by Luke's next words, “because he preached to them Jesus and the resurrection.” What this probably meant to them is that Paul was preaching Jesus as a “god” as well as “the Anastasis,” as a god. The word anastasis signifies “a standing up,” thus “the raising” or “the resurrection.” Hence, they think that Paul's proclamation of Jesus' resurrection not as an action but as a second god. In other words, “He is preaching the Jesus and the Anastasis,” rather than “Jesus who was resurrected.” Hence, the word daimonion, the plural term for heathen gods or demons is used. Life application: In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul spends a great deal of time explaining the resurrection. This is based on the words of verse 12, “...how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead.” This would have probably been introduced by some who followed the Greek philosophers or who were later influenced by them after first believing. For example, The Epicureans didn't believe the gods exercised any care or providence over human affairs and they denied the immortality of the soul. As such, they believed that the soul and body died together. Likewise, some of the Greek philosophers believed in Pantheism, the universe is a manifestation of God. Others believed in Panentheism; God is in all of creation. The Bible, in both testaments, refutes of these. Paul spends considerable time explaining the nature of God, speaking against such notions. God is before all things, He is the Creator of all things, but He is not “all things” nor is He “in” all things in the sense that would allow the creation to be worshiped or to assume that the divine is in us. Rather, we can think of a painter making a painting. His hand is in the painting, but the painting is not the painter, nor is the painter in the painting, except as an expression of Himself. To understand the intricacies of what God is like, we must first grasp what Scripture says, contemplating it carefully. From there, we can make logical deductions about Him. But we must also be careful to not incorrectly assume that metaphors, anthropomorphisms, etc., about God that are given in Scripture are to be taken literally. For example, because of how metaphor is used, some people demand that the earth must be flat. They have incorrectly assigned metaphors found in Scripture to their idea of the world. That can occur in our ideas about God as well. Understanding Scripture from a proper context and contemplating philosophy, science, and other disciplines can help us logically think about what God is like. Spend your time wisely and contemplate God carefully. You will be better off when you do. Lord God, may our ideas about You come first and foremost from Scripture. With an understanding of it, our minds will then be properly directed to consider the various disciplines of study that we come across in our lives. Instead of fitting You into science, we can understand science in relation to You. Help us to put You and Your word first and all else will find its proper place. Amen.

John 20:1—18Before the sun had risen on Sunday morning, Mary Magdalene made a trip to the tomb where His body was laid to rest. In the darkness, she discovered the covering had been rolled away. 2 She darted out of the garden to find Simon Peter and the dearly loved disciple to deliver this startling news.Mary Magdalene: They have taken the body of our Lord, and we cannot find Him!3 Together, they all departed for the tomb to see for themselves. 4 They began to run, and Peter could not keep up. The beloved disciple arrived first 5 but did not go in. There was no corpse in the tomb, only the linens and cloths He was wrapped in. 6 When Simon Peter finally arrived, he went into the tomb and observed the same: 7 the cloth that covered His face appeared to have been folded carefully and placed, not with the linen cloths, but to the side. 8 After Peter pointed this out, the other disciple who had arrived long before Peter) also entered the tomb; and based on what he saw, faith began to well up inside him 9 Before this moment, none of them understood the Scriptures and why He must be raised from the dead. 10 Then they all went to their homes.11 Mary, however, stood outside the tomb sobbing, crying, and kneeling at its entrance. 12 As she cried, two heavenly messengers appeared before her sitting where Jesus' head and feet had been laid.Heavenly Messengers: 13 Dear woman, why are you weeping?Mary Magdalene: They have taken away my Lord, and I cannot find Him.14 After uttering these words, she turned around to see Jesus standing before her, but she did not recognize Him.Jesus: 15 Dear woman, why are you sobbing? Who is it you are looking for?She still had no idea who it was before her. Thinking He was the gardener, she muttered:Mary Magdalene: Sir, if you are the one who carried Him away, then tell me where He is and I will retrieve Him.Jesus: 16 MaryMary Magdalene: turning to Jesus and speaking in Hebrew: Rabboni, my TeacherJesus: 17 Mary, you cannot hold Me. I must rise above this world to be with My Father, who is also your Father; My God, who is also your God. Go tell this to all My brothers.18 Mary Magdalene obeyed and went directly to His disciples.Mary Magdalene announcing to the disciples: I have seen the Lord, and this is what He said to me.Western Church ResurrectionGiovanni Bellini (Venetian painter, c. 1430-1516) "Resurrection of Christ" (1475-79), Oil on panelResurrection of Christ, oil on wood panel, Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio of Urbino) (1483-1520)Eastern Church Resurrection Christ's Descent into Hades, Anastasis or Resurrection IconAnastasis Dark Church (Karanlik Kilise).
