In 1930s New York, four desperate men hatched the perfect murder plot — or so they thought. Tony Marino, Joseph Murphy, Francis Pasqua, and Tony Bastone targeted a homeless man named Mike Malloy, hoping to kill him for insurance money. But Malloy wouldn't die. Poisoned drinks, antifreeze, carpet tacks, freezing nights, even a hit-and-run — he survived it all. This is the bizarre true crime story of how one man accidentally became a legend, and how four would-be killers were ultimately outwitted by the most unlikely survivor in true crime history.Become a Patreon or Apple + subscriber now for ealry and ad free access from as little as $1.69 a week. March 19th might be just another day in other parts of the United States, but here in New Orleans it's a day when revelers take to the streets in honor of the Feast of St. Joseph. The tradition of food altars dedicated to Jesus' foster father came to the Crescent City in the late 1800s with immigrants from Sicily, where Joseph is the patron saint. What was called Mi-Carême (or Mid-Lent by the Creoles) was a day when fasting was suspended and festivities abounded. On this week's show, we explore the holiday and join in on the celebration. Tony Marino's family were faithful followers of St. Joseph, and today, he keeps the tradition alive at his Bourbon Street home in New Orleans' French Quarter. We sit down with Tony to hear what it takes to pull off his annual street party, complete with altars and a life-sized statue of St. Joseph. Then, Arthur Brocato, third generation of Angelo Brocato's Ice Cream and Confectionary, joins us to share his family's history and explain the special role Brocato's has played in the St. Joseph's Day celebration. Founded in the French Quarter in 1905, the gelateria and pasticceria continues those traditions today on Carrollton Avenue in Mid-City. Finally, historian Laura Guccione joins us to reveal what she's discovered about the fancy dress balls that were once part of the St. Joseph tradition and to explain the mystical tie between the feast day and the Mardi Gras Indians. This is the final episode of my 2023 Sweeps Period and it is a STORYTIME that served as a working model for my book 'Northridge High Football Camp'. I wrote this story in 1992 and I copyrighted it in 1994. If you are a fan of the Jockstrap Stories podcast, you may recognize many of the characteristics of the main protagonist in this story that ended up being part of the character development of Vinnie Manta, the main protagonist in 'Northridge High Football Camp'. I also used some of the description when I created the character of Tony Marino. This story was part of a planned series called Campfire Stories. I will probably continue with that series in the future.Don't miss the FINAL LIVE Pride48 Streaming Weekend. This is it! One afternoon in July 1932, Francis Pasqua, Daniel Kriesberg and Tony Marino sat in Marino's eponymous speakeasy and raised their glasses, sealing their complicity, figuring the job was already half-finished. How difficult could it be to push Michael Malloy to drink himself to death? Every morning the old man showed up at Marino's place in the Bronx and requested “Another mornin's morning, if ya don't mind” in his muddled brogue; hours later he would pass out on the floor. For a while Marino had let Malloy drink on credit, but he no longer paid his tabs. “Business,” the saloonkeeper confided to Pasqua and Kriesberg, “is bad.”

In New York City in 1933, during both the Great Depression and the Prohibition Era, a group of guys - Tony Marino, Daniel Kriesberg, Francis Pasqua, and Joseph Murphy - hatched a plot to kill Michael Malloy, a regular at the speakeasy that Marino owned, and collect on a few insurance policies that they were going to take out on him.  After several failed attempts, they enlisted the help of Tough Tony Bastone and his sidekick Joseph Maglione, and later one even cab driver Harry Green and local doctor, Dr. Frank Manzella.  It would seem that it was impossible to kill Iron Mike, as he came to be known.Sources for this episode:Wikipedia - New York Cityall that's interesting - The Curious Case of Michael Malloy - "Rasputin Of The Bronx"Smithsonian Magazine - The Man Who Wouldn't DieDrinking Cup - The legend of Mike Malloy and the Murder TrustTrivia Library - New York Gangs Murder Trust and Michael Malloy Parts 1-5Irish Central - Michael Malloy - the Irishman in The Bronx that could not be murderedThe True Crime Edition - The Murder Plot of "Iron" Mike MalloySupport the show

He had no family or friends, no consistent job, no home,  and was by all accounts a severe alcoholic. The great depression was one of the most challenging times in history. The financial uncertainty of the time led many to nefarious forms of income. Unfortunately for Mike Malloy, others looked to more extreme measures. Over a few months in early 1933, a group of five directed by Tony Marino repeatedly attempted to kill Malloy to claim a significant life insurance policy they had taken out on him. The group didn't anticipate just how difficult it would be to kill Mike. Night after night, the group concocted increasingly gruesome plans; however, without any clear explanation, Mike survived. Eventually, the group was successful at its goal. But the success wouldn't last long as the group failed to keep quiet and faced the music.
