63: How Avaline Became a $33M Wine Powerhouse with CEO Jen Purcell - Business of Drinks

At a time when much of the wine industry is flat or in decline, Avaline — founded by Cameron Diaz and Katherine Power — is breaking sales records. In 2024, Avaline crossed 213,000 cases sold, generated $33.2 million in tracked retail sales, and saw 48.8% year-over-year growth. In this episode, we speak with Jen Purcell, Avaline's CEO, who has led the company to retail dominance. Under her leadership, Avaline has dialled in its retail strategy, becoming a top-selling wine at key retailers like Sprouts, Whole Foods, and Total Wine. They've expanded to all 50 U.S. states, and built a loyal DTC and affiliate customer base — all while disrupting wine norms with a transparent, health-conscious, and lifestyle-forward approach. In this episode, Jen shares:How Avaline built traction with consumers by emphasizing organic ingredients, clean labels, and simplicity over terroirWhy Avaline launched in retail first, grew DTC later, and is only now expanding into on-premiseThe thinking behind early SKUs like “White” and “Rosé,” and why the brand later expanded into varietals like Cabernet, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon BlancHow the team grew an affiliate network of 700+ brand fans who drive sales through community-based storytellingWhy Avaline's marketing team is built with talent from fashion, beauty, and lifestyle — not wineWhat's working in paid ads, social, and influencer marketing — including a focus on UGC and lifestyle content over traditional product shotsLast Call:Do wine writers need formal wine certifications? That's the provocative question we're tackling on this week's Last Call on the Business of Drinks podcast — sparked by a viral Substack post from author Henry Jeffreys. With 134,000 people taking WSET exams in the past year alone, wine education is booming. But is it necessary to be a great communicator? Versed's Katherine Power and Lola Gonzalez Marra: ‘Every great brand should evolve its look and feel every five years'

“I believe that every great brand should evolve its look and feel about every five years,” said Katherine Power, serial entrepreneur and the founder of Versed skin care. “Since our launch in 2019, we've seen that our core customer, who is primarily an older millennial or young Gen X — I call them Xennials — has really grown along with us, and we wanted to continue to grow with them and to create something fresh and modern.” This included a refresh of packaging, visuals and language overseen by Lola Gonzalez Marra, Versed's longtime creative lead. Power and Marra have worked together for more than a decade on Power's many entrepreneurial projects, including editorial sites WhoWhatWear and Byrdie — which Power launched with Hillary Kerr in 2006 and 2013, respectively — as well as color cosmetics line Merit, which Power founded in 2021.  “We decided we needed to evolve enough that it's a change, but not so much that you go on Versed one day and it's a completely different brand,” said Marra. As Power and Marra explained on this episode of the Glossy Beauty Podcast, the refresh has been in the works for over a year.  Versed was launched in 2019 from data and insights learned at Byrdie and WhoWhatWear, which Power and Kerr have since sold to publisher Dotdash in 2019 and publisher Future Brands in 2022, respectively.  Thanks to Versed's omnichannel strategy where 75% of its sales are through Target, switching over merchandise has required a unique strategy. Hint: Versed is selling off older products DTC for 30% off right now. The team also rolled out tweaks to its social media aesthetic and naming formula for products. The brand also used this as an opportunity to fine-tune the assortment by making product cuts. But perhaps the biggest change is in its packaging colors, which Marra desaturated and leveraged into category IDs, all of which the duo discusses in the podcast episode.

This episode is all about seeing the opportunity at the given moment and then making the big leap because you believe in your idea. And although the journey isn't always a straight line to success, with enough flexibility, faith, and knowledge, you can do anything.  IN THIS EPISODE: [03:20] Marla never liked the shopping experience department stores had to offer at the time. So she decided to improve it. [05:25] How Bluemercury started as an internet company and what Jeff Bezos has to do with it? [10:59] Marla's parents always insisted on her getting a good education. We have a new wine bar in Sebastopol. Region wine bar will specialize in pouring small production wines using self-serve wine machines.Cameron Diaz and Katherine Power have entered the celebrity wine business. Their wine brand Avaline, is entering a crowded market place. Years of consolidation by alcohol producers and wholesalers, uncertainty due to an ongoing trade war and now a pandemic makes one consider their market timing. However the ladies may be filling a void by marketing their product as a “clean wine”. Danny Meyer has hit the play button and is rehiring staff and slowly reopening his restaurants. The challenges of the pandemic have caused him to re-examine his policies on tipping though. With over 20,000 restaurants currently out of business in the U.S. Danny has plans to survive the fallout and still bring about equity within the ranks of the restaurant business.Dan Berger pens a nice article on the drawbacks of vintage charts. When I first started learning about wine I always carried a vintage chart in my wallet. How about you? Do vintage charts help you make buying decisions on wine?Bill and I discuss these items and more in this week's addition of VinoWeek. Thanks to everyone for listening. Cheers! Our wine recommendation this week is the 2015 Domaine de Compostelle. Domaine de Compostelle is the second wine for Chateau La Cabanne. The estate in the past has had a reputation of under-performing considering its neighbors are Chateau Clinet and Chateau Trontanoy. In 2010 a big fire destroyed most of the vat room and all of the 2008 vintage. This allowed the owners the Estager family to outfit the Chateau with state of the art equipment, vats and cooperage. Things appear to be on the upswing as the 2015 Compostelle is a wonderful wine. The blend is 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. After fermentation the wine is aged for fourteen months in 50% new french oak barrels while the balance is aged in second and third use barrels. Drinking extremely well right now Compostelle is medium to full bodied. The nose shows violets, red berries, currants and plums with a touch of earthiness. On the palate its fresh and crisp displaying an all too pleasing touch of cocoa covered cherries. It’s young but the tannins are already well integrated. Good Pomerol is never cheap, there’s just not enough of it to go around. Here you have a Pomerol from a good vintage, that’s still available at a fair price. $40 alc 14.5 Buy it here. Drinking Extremely Well Right Now
