My guest this week is Edward Trayer, but many schoolchildren, parents and teachers know him by the name Billy Bob Buttons. Edward went through a few incarnations before he settled on this persona, from a teacher to a pilot, but he found his life's calling when he brought the joy of reading and writing to children. Edward is also a fierce advocate for indie authors, launching an award that recognizes self-published authors in a way that does not just take their money. So, here's the story of Billy Bob Buttons. Every week I interview a member of ALLi to talk about their writing and what inspires them, and why they are inspiring to other authors. Otherwise, the business will be turned over to Brian's conniving associate, Eric (Bradley Whitford).
Rapid deployments are a fact of life for soldiers at Fort Bragg. Once notice is given, paratroopers have just 18 hours to prepare to go anywhere in the world. Bill Wadford was working as an operating room nurse with the 5th MASH unit on the evening December 17th, 1989, when he got the call to deploy as part of the Panama Invasion. "We were in the process of doing an emergency C-section," Wadford recalled. "The baby was out, the mom was stable, and we were closing. I answered the phone and it was the executive officer of the 5th MASH. His voice was quite tense, and he said, 'Captain Wadford, you are ordered toimmediately report to the warehouse in case we have to move out.'" "I said, 'Billy, we're right in the middle of the operation right now, I can't leave.' He goes, 'I repeat the order.'" At home, Wadford had just enough time to pack his rucksack and say goodbye to his wife. "Her eyes got big as saucers," said Wadford. "I said, 'I can't tell you, trust me, I’ll be fine, watch the news. I don't think I'll be able to call you, but I love you, I love the kids, and I'll see you when I can see you.'" Hours later Wadford was in the air, headed to Panama as part of a forward surgical team. Wadford landed back at Green Ramp two weeks later, just in time to wish his wife a Happy New Year.

As Ron Howard observed in one of our previous episodes, Ang Lee is a filmmaker with a quite extraordinary range. He followed the majestic Oscar-winning Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon with comic book joyride Hulk - before bringing us Brokeback Mountain, Lust Caution and The Life Of Pi. Such a diverse array of subject matter has very different musical requirements, with Tan Dun, Mychael Danna, Danny Elfman and Alexandre Desplat among the composers he’s worked with. And these collaborations are exactly what we’re here to discuss on Soundtracking – a weekly podcast about screen music with Edith. Ang’s latest movie is Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk. Starring young British actor Joe Alwynn in the title role, it tells the story of a soldier returning from Iraq who’s suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. From the point of view of score, the narrative posed a new set of challenges for the Taiwanese director - given that much of the action unfolds in a sports stadium …
Brian tired himself out after venting his continuing frustration at the lack of activity by the Mets front office, Matt Harvey declining to unblock him on Twitter despite extreme awareness, declaring we are all currently living in the darkest timeline, and from sending Roger to the therapist's office to admit he's frustrated at the Mets as well. (Yes, Jay Bruce was involved.) Fortunately, Brian had a lot of positive energy hosting a game show a few days earlier testing Mets fans' knowledge of their favorite baseball team, romance novels, and serial killers at the Queens Baseball Convention. In an even more fortuitous stroke of luck, the flattering facsimile of 'Billy on the Street' was recorded and presented on this episode. J.T. Teran and Michelle Ioannou of Rising Apple, Matthew Cerrone of MetsBlog, and members of the the Citi Field Sheas and The 7 Line Army were among the fun contestants. The two also went into the mailbag and answered listeners' questions and concerns, like if the team's new 'catching guru' can cure Travis d'Arnaud, if the fans and media will enjoy another spring training car and pony show from Yoenis Cespedes, and if David Wright will start more games than Michael Conforto. Feel free to email or leave a voice memo at goodfundies@gmail.com to take part in that in the future.
