Today's broadcast is C1E95 for VibeOff Vrijdag, May 9th, 2025. Today's broadcast will be a one-time-only special twist on a FaceOff Friday, where, instead of comparing different versions of the same track against each other, we're comparing pairs (and occasionally trios) of different songs against each other which either have similar movements, or melodies, or instrumentation, or simply just vibes and asking you, the listener to not only tell us which one you like better, but whether or not the comparisons are even valid, and how strongly or weakly if so. So, in lieu of an 8th and final FaceOff Friday episode, Nerd Noise Radio is pleased to present: VibeOff Vrijdag (Vrijdag = the Dutch word for Friday). See the show notes for a link to a document which will allow you to grade me on these comparisons if you so choose! Welcome to the very first episode of VGM Origins. A VGM podcast where I interview my guest which range from fellow VGM podcasters, podcasting fans, friends, some family, and who ever wants to come on. My first guest hails from the Shujin Academy VGM Club. He is known as Professor Tom. The prof like myself is a huge wrestling fan, so I figured what better way to do a show then to listen to tracks centered around characters who are either grapplers, wrestlers, or use wrestling moves. We also talk about family, time we wish we had to play games, and Toasted PB&J sandwiches. 1. The Circuit (Hugo's Theme)- Street Fighter 3rd Strike (Hideki Okugawa) 2. With the game being generally very well-received by critics upon release in arcades and later home console ports, Darkstalkers would become a Capcom title that was essential in the further development of Capcom's 2-D fighter dominance. Although these days The Darkstalkers have been Relegated to cameos and costume skins for other Capcom fighting games, but as long as there are fans of this series, The DarkStalkers will NEVER DIE! Blog link: http://videogamegrooves.com/2021/02/03/episode-76-street-fighter-iii-the-collection The World Fighting Championship returns to your turntable in the form of the underappreciated little brother of the Street Fighter franchise: Street Fighter III. We're joined by Ryan Huff of One Run Records for this one, so you know it's going to be a little offbeat to begin with! In this episode, Anthony takes the helm and steers us through the musically- and canonically-complicated waters of Street Fighter III: The Collection from Laced Records, with stops at New Generation, 2nd Impact, and Third Strike. The evolving music and sound of Hideki Okugawa as the game saw its various iterations from 1997 to 1999 and finally settled on something more evolved and distinctive than the series had dared previously. We discuss the art, the cultural impact, and the mechanical import of this Capcom gem, and help you to appreciate it as only a black-clad beret-wearing teenager traipsing around Germany could! We take care of some housecleaning with the new releases and other announcements of the past couple of weeks. We muse over the thematically-appropriate question of pan-series box sets, such as Laced has done with Street Fighter 3, and we discuss the relative merit of "less-popular" games getting unsuccessful standalone releases versus folding them into a larger set. Today's Rerun is C1E27: "Mishmash Monday - vol 4", originally released April 23rd, 2018. Please note that due to the attached ear catcher at the beginning regarding Best of 2019, the time stamps in the track list will be off by a minute, minute and a half. Up against a deadline to put this down for a couple months, I did not have time to update the time stamps accordingly. They're still reasonably close, I suppose. :-) Cheers! Due to not getting internet installed in my new home until August, I'm unable to stream LIVE shows until then! Instead, here's another remastered version of The Sound Test's second show of all time! This time, I speak an unbelievable amount of bollocks. There are parts of this episode that really make me cringe, but I think longtime listeners will enjoy hearing some of my naivety and growth as a VGM fan. Really, I was at the very beginning of my journey! In particular, I'm especially embarrassed about my totally misread pronunciation of "Clark Aboud" as "Clark Abound" - sorry Clark! Fortunately, after two interviews with the man himself, I think we're cool!Dale brings his usual unique perspective to the proceedings and, other than a few ignorant comments on my part, this is another great, relaxed evening with the two of us. All the chat aside, the playlist stays strong this week with a number of banging choices and odd gems side-by-side. However, it's worth mentioning that there are several tracks/games on this playlist that would later become repeated favourites of the show. For this season finale, Lee takes a look at some of his all-time favourite side scrolling beat 'em ups! Of course, the show is bolstered by an array of requests and other unrelated choices, which all come together to form a particularly bass-heavy playlist. The show will return with a fourth season on July 17th, 2020; allowing Lee to catch his breath and focus a little on ST2. Hopefully, this closing mix of VGM joy will satisfy until ST LIVE comes back!#DefundNewscopThis week's playlist:Title – David Wise [Battletoads]Dervish D (Multisid) – LMan (originally composed by Vangelis) [Commodore 64 Remix Classics - 80s Synth Hits, Vol. 1]Comets That Are Crazy – Hubbard & Donne [Hubbard ‘80]Thing on a Spring – Rob Hubbard [Commodore 64 Sid Anthology, Vol. 3]Echoes in My Mind – Mandrill [The Warriors]Saints of Rage - Stage 3 – Malcolm Kirby Jr [Saints Row IV]If You Dare – Megan McDuffee [River City Girls]ROUND 4 INDUSTRIAL AREA 2 ROUND 6 – Manami Matsumae, Yoshihiro Sakaguchi, Yasuaki Fujita, Hiromitsu Takaoaka, Yoko Shimomura, Junko Tamiya and/or Harumi Fujita [Final Fight]Moe's Tavern – Norio Hanzawa [The Simpsons]Kick ‘n' Punch – David Wise [Battletoads/Double Dragon]Cluffy Flouds 1 – TDK [CyberSpeed Unleashed]Northern Kremisphere (Restored) – Eveline Novakovic [Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!]Thirty Seven After Six – Mike Morasky [Half-Life: Alyx]Deep Jungle – Yoko Shimomura [Kingdom Hearts]The Instinct – Robin Beanland [Killer Instinct]Mach Rider – Hideki Kanazashi and/or Hiroaki Suga [Super Smash Bros. To follow on from last week's question about gaming's best playable animal characters, this show delves deep into the wild. With a whole host of choices from listeners, alongside Lee's personal top five, it turns out that there are a lot more iconic digital animals than you might think. There are so many, in fact, that most of the show's regular features are put to one side until next week. Aptly, Lee's dog, Daisy, prances onto the show for a cameo appearance, not best pleased at being left out of the conversation. This week's playlist:Black Dawn: Rebirth – Mike RichmondCluffy Flouds 2 – TDK [CyberSpeed Unleashed]Replay 01 – Ian Livingstone [F1 2014]After Burner (FM Towns) – Hiroshi Kawaguchi [After Burner]Main Theme – Fat Bard [Guinea Pig Parkour]Turtle Woods – Josh Mancell [Crash Bandicoot N. Video games allow American gamers to see depictions of America that don’t always line up with how they might see themselves. But how do VGM composers shorthand the U.S.A.? I listened to some of the more notable examples of themes for American characters in games around the Street Fighter II era to see what version of America they’re trying to communicate to us. We’re finally here at the end of the longest year in the history of long, bad years. We barely played any games this year, so pulling together our favorite songs was a mighty task, but we weren’t going to let you walk away empty-handed. Also, let’s be real, it’s way harder to find ten good games than games with good music. Good game music is easy. You here me, Capcom?? EASY! THERE’S NO EXCUSE FOR MEGA MAN TO SOUND LIKE THIS!*ahem*Please enjoy these hours of music and best of lists, and I hope everyone has a great end to the year from hell. May the hell be lessened and the games better in 2019. Thanks everyone, for everything.A few notes: you can find our episode for the music from games we played for the first six months of the year on Abnormal Mapping 79. Also, to enjoy this episode in higher quality than our hosting can support, please consider listening to it on YouTube if you're sensitive to that sort of thing! As always you can find Abnormal Mapping on iTunes, Stitcher, and Google Play! All of our shows, and this entire network, is Patreon supported! Singing Mountain’s celebration of Halloween comes to an end with the most Halloween-appropriate fighting series in history, Darkstalkers. Feed will include Channels 1, 2, 3, and any future channels not yet planned. Feed will also include podcasts in high quality, stereo where applicable, and episodes will never expire off the feed. Therefore it is STRONGLY recommended that you subscribe to this Nerd Noise Radio feed and bypass all others. This one will contain all their content anyway. Option 2: If you're ONLY interested in Channel 1 ("Noise from the Hearts of Nerds") episodes, and not in any of the other content that is or will be offered by Nerd Noise Radio, there is a Channel 1-specific feed. But it's hosted on a free account, rather than an upgraded account like the "All Channels Feed" with lower quality sound (mono, I believe), a maximum 2hrs per month of content (so if the month's episodes run longer than that, they may need to be trimmed), and episodes expire off the feed forever after 90 days. It is STRONGLY recommended for most listeners to subscribe to the All-Channels feed instead. However, if you really are only interested in Channel 1 content, here's the RSS: http://www.buzzsprout.com/77944.rss Our episodes will also appear on our Nerd Noise Radio YouTube Channel - just search for Nerd Noise Radio, you'll find us! Here's today's episode: https://youtu.be/0kbqN-XRBn0 Additionally, there are YouTube Playlists you can follow, both an "All Channels" Feed (recommended), as well as channel-specific feeds. You can find them here: Nerd Noise Radio Network - All Channels Podcast Feed Nerd Noise Radio - Channel 1 podcast Nerd Noise Radio is now available on Twitch as well! This is a music only remix of my last episode, about laidback music in fighting games, in which "laidback" = relaxed, cheerful, atmospheric and in any other way unusual for the background music of a stage in a fighting game. In addition to the tracks from that original episode, I included a few more that either didn't make the cut or had been used in recent episodes. It's about an hour of music altogether.
