As fear spreads through Sacramento, the public demands answers. Communities hold meetings. Newspapers cover the case. And all the while, Paul Holes believes the East Area Rapist was likely watching closely. In this episode, we examine a chilling turning point in the series: the first known attack with a man present in the home, and the possibility that the offender targeted that couple after a town hall comment. The case draws more public attention, and the crimes become more calculated. Want to hear the entire series right now? Across ten episodes, Paul joins Yeardley, Dan, and Dave for a firsthand account of one of the most significant cold case investigations in American history. From the early crimes of the Visalia Ransacker to the East Area Rapist attacks, the Southern California homicides, and the DNA breakthrough that finally identified Joseph DeAngelo, Paul walks listeners through the evidence, the setbacks, the mistakes, and the personal toll of doggedly pursuing a case for decades. Freak Family Favorites: Bat People, Moon Hoaxes, and Museums That Shouldn't Exist This Freak Family Favorites episode comes straight from the recommendations of the Freak Family, and it's packed with the kind of stories that remind us why history is often stranger than fiction. First, Kat unpacks one of the greatest media hoaxes ever printed: The Great Moon Hoax of 1835. Newspapers convinced thousands of readers that a giant telescope had discovered life on the Moon—including winged bat people, intelligent beavers that built villages, strange temples, and an entire lunar civilization. It spread across America and Europe before anyone stopped to ask whether any of it was actually true. Then Jethro takes a tour through some of the world's most bizarre museum exhibits. From Galileo's preserved middle finger and Thomas Edison's supposed last breath to necropants, human-skin books, serial killer relics, and anatomical displays that blur the line between science and the macabre, these are museums unlike any you've ever visited. If you've ever wondered how easily people can be fooled—or why museums sometimes keep the strangest souvenirs imaginable—this Freak Family favorite belongs at the top of your playlist. In this episode: The Great Moon Hoax of 1835 Bat people, lunar beavers, and the newspaper story that fooled the world Sir John Herschel's unwitting role in history's most famous astronomy hoax Edgar Allan Poe's unexpected connection to the scandal The world's strangest museum exhibits Galileo's middle finger, Thomas Edison's last breath, necropants, human-skin books, and more Weird history, oddities, curiosities, and unbelievable true stories Perfect for fans of: Weird history, historical hoaxes, Edgar Allan Poe, astronomy, museums, macabre history, curiosities, folklore, and the strange true stories that make the world wonderfully weird. Thank you to Fabi, our fantastic tour guide in Italy, for suggesting this case. I apologize in advance for any mispronunciations. When 13-year-old Yara Gambirasio vanished on a freezing November night in Brembate di Sopra, it kicked off a heartbreaking search that ended months later in a desolate field. What started as a devastating local tragedy snowballed into an absolutely unprecedented investigation. Investigators tested the DNA of twenty-two thousand people: a massive undertaking that accidentally blew the lid off decades of deeply buried family secrets across northern Italy. At the same time, authorities hunted down "Unknown 1" and eventually arrested Massimo Bossetti. Even now, the lingering forensic questions make some wonder if justice was actually served. In this episode of the Research Like a Pro Genealogy podcast, hosts Diana and Nicole discuss the features and effectiveness of FamilySearch's new "Simple Search" tool. They explore how this experiment allows users to search billions of full-text records using natural language queries rather than traditional forms. Diana shares her experience testing the tool with her father's name, Bobby Gene Shults, demonstrating how the artificial intelligence parses results and helps distinguish between individuals with similar names. Listeners learn practical strategies for using Simple Search effectively, such as starting with broad queries and utilizing filters for collection, year, place, and record type to narrow results. Diana highlights the utility of the tool by successfully locating military muster rolls that confirm her father's service history and hospitalization during World War II. By experimenting with different search terms, spelling variations, and searching for associates, researchers can better leverage this technology to discover new documents for their family history. THE (MAGAZINE) DOCTOR IS IN — Megan Schertler wants to help you make magazines. Yes, you … and you … and you too. But she also wants to ensure that once you make a magazine, you make another one. And then one after that. She wants to make sure that you know it's not easy to create a magazine or to run one or to publish a second one or to sustain a magazine or media brand or to run a business. Megan is big on print. She's one of those extremely rare people who's held down numerous magazine jobs while never working on the digital side of things. Yes, really. People like her exist. So she knows more than many her age that print is more engaging, produces more loyalty, and creates a deeper and more meaningful connection with the message on the page than any other medium. And so with her partners, Megan now helms In Real Life Media to help would-be magazine makers sure, but also some of the world's largest brands navigate the realities of the magazine world. Because while we all love print here, it's hard, it's expensive, and it is, quite frankly, a pain in the ass. But it also results in something glorious, and Megan travels the world speaking at conferences and to people like me to spread the word.. — This episode is made possible by our friends at Freeport Press. Michael Stamm delivered the 2026 Kenneth Karmiole Endowed Lecture on the History of the Book Trades, "Landscapes, Labor, and the Infrastructures of Printed Newspapers," on 8 July 2026. About the Talk: Printed newspapers have become endangered as digital distribution has transformed the news business and the ways that people access information. This talk returns to the decades in our previous century when the printed newspaper thrived as the center of the news cycle, and it highlights some of the hidden landscapes, labor, and infrastructures enabling that. Twentieth-century newspapers were not just outlets for news but were also the material products of industrial capitalism manufactured by business firms organized like those in other mass production industries. These firms drew upon natural raw materials and developed infrastructures of production and distribution gathering large and diverse human labor forces including lumberjacks, paper mill operators, and newsboys. We often think about printed texts as relationships between authors and readers, but this talk draws attention to some of the hidden materials, people, and infrastructures involved in producing and circulating printed newspapers. About the Speaker: Michael Stamm is Professor of History at Michigan State University. He received his B.A. in English from UC Berkeley in 1994 and his Ph.D. in History from the University of Chicago in 2006. He has been at MSU since 2008, and he has served as Chairperson of the History Department since 2022. He is a political, cultural, and environmental historian specializing in media and journalism history. His first book, Sound Business: Newspapers, Radio, and the Politics of New Media (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2011), traced how American newspapers have responded to competition from “new media,” which in the decades after 1920 meant radio broadcasting. His most recent book is Dead Tree Media: Manufacturing the Newspaper in Twentieth-Century North America (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2018), which offers a history of the printed newspaper tracing its production from the forest to the reader. In 2019, the book received Canadian Business History Association's Best Book Prize. He is currently completing a book entitled Communicating with Nature: Agriculture, Materiality, and the Industrial Information Age, which traces the use of farm crops in the manufacturing of paper and ink and in the circulation of public information.

Diana and Nicole discuss how genealogists use artificial intelligence to transcribe handwritten, foreign-language historical documents. They review feedback from a survey regarding experiences with various AI tools, including Transkribus, Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude, and Leo. The researchers report positive experiences, with average accuracy ratings between 7.5 and 8 out of 10. Listeners learn which languages, such as Spanish, German, French, Latin, and Scandinavian, are commonly processed through these tools. The discussion highlights that while AI excels at speed, it frequently struggles with proper names, obscure place names, and table-based data. The hosts share field-tested strategies for successful transcription. Listeners learn to provide extensive context in their prompts, work in small segments, and perform a manual "rough read" before utilizing AI. Diana and Nicole emphasize the importance of acquiring basic language skills to spot errors, especially when dealing with subtle, plausible hallucinations from large language models. They conclude that AI serves as a powerful assistant but caution that it cannot replace the researcher's own skill and judgment. This summary was generated by Google Gemini. How did a nation with less than 5% of the world's population come to publish over half of all the newspapers? This week Author Alex Wright discusses his new book, Empire of Ink: The Printers, Rogues, and Radicals Who Invented the American Newspaper. Wright takes us on a journey through the explosive, footloose growth of 19th-century American print media. From the early "gift economy" of open-source story sharing and the lucrative media empire of Benjamin Franklin, to the dangerous world of gunslinging editors and Mark Twain's disastrous tech investments, Wright details how an unruly young democracy leveraged bold public policies and a distinct mania for news to forge its national identity.

French teenagers carry a smartphone with access to almost anything, but few of them have been using it to read the news.Julia Cagé (Sciences Po, CEPR) ran an experiment to test the one barrier everyone assumes matters most: the price of a newspaper. She and her co-authors gave free digital subscriptions to Le Monde and media education to thousands of French high school students for a year, and then tracked what the students actually read. It's a bit like persuading kids to eat vegetables when there are fries on the table, she tells Tim Phillips. Can a free subscription persuade France's teens to use their phones differently and eat their media greens, and what changes when they do?The research behind this episode:Briole, Simon, Julia Cagé, and Andrea Prat. 2026. "Making Teenagers Read Newspapers: A Nationwide Experiment in French High Schools." CEPR Discussion Paper 21706. Gated. To cite this episode:Phillips, Tim, and Julia Cagé. 2026. “Making teenagers read newspapers”. VoxTalks Economics (podcast).About the guestJulia Cagé is Professor of Economics at Sciences Po Paris and a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), where she leads the CEPR Research and Policy Network on Media Plurality. Her research spans media economics, political participation, and the economics of information, with a particular focus on how news markets shape political knowledge and democratic engagement. She is the author of several books on the media, including Saving the Media and The Price of Democracy.Research cited in this episodeReuters Institute Digital News Report is an annual global survey that tracks how people find, consume, and pay for news across dozens of countries. Cagé cites its long-running data on declining time spent reading news online, a trend she says is sharpest among the young.Post-Broadcast Democracy, a book by the political scientist Markus Prior, argues that the shift from a small number of broadcast TV channels to an environment of unlimited media choice let people who were never especially interested in news opt out of it entirely. Cagé uses Prior's framework to argue that the internet did not create this problem; television did, and the internet simply deepened it.Information inequality describes the finding that lower-income, less-educated citizens draw on fewer sources of political information than wealthier, better-educated ones, widening gaps in political knowledge. The concept draws on earlier work by Cagé's co-author Andrea Prat, and it motivates the experiment's focus on whether free access to quality journalism narrows that gap for teenagers from poorer backgrounds.More VoxTalks Economics episodesMisinformation and trust in news, in which Ruben Durante discusses a field experiment testing how AI-generated misinformation changes readers' trust in, and demand for, credible journalism.Related reading on VoxEUInformation inequality, a VoxEU column by Paul Kennedy and Andrea Prat setting out the cross-country evidence that poorer, less-educated voters consume fewer sources of political news, the pattern this episode's experiment sets out to address.

Every industry has its digital revolution. Music had MP3s. Film had streaming. Newspapers faced the internet. But one of the most fascinating—and least understood—transformations happened in publishing. For more than 500 years, books remained remarkably unchanged. Authors wrote, publishers printed, bookstores sold, and readers turned physical pages. Then, seemingly overnight, everything changed. E-books emerged, Amazon transformed bookselling, self-publishing exploded, and the entire publishing ecosystem was forced to reinvent itself. Today's guest didn't just witness that revolution—he helped lead it. Richard Curtis is a legendary literary agent, entrepreneur, and founder of one of the world's first e-book publishing companies. In his new book, Digital Inc.: From Print to E-Book—Inside the Transformation of the Book Industry, he tells the remarkable inside story of how publishing entered the digital age and how those changes continue to shape the way we write, publish, sell, and read books today. We'll talk about the early days of e-books, the resistance from traditional publishing, Amazon's disruptive influence, the rise of digital authors, and what the future of books may look like.

Are you hanging on …too tightly? In 1956, Jim Elliot was murdered by Indians in the jungles of Ecuador. Newspaper reporters wondered why this missionary would risk his life for uncivilized Indians. Though Jim Elliot died at only 28 years old, he had a proper perspective of life. He said, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”Too often, we hold tightly to possessions and activities that hold no eternal value. Don't make the mistake of clinging to things of insignificance. Teach your kids through your example to give your time and talents to worthwhile causes. That may seem hard at first, but as you make God a daily priority, your possessions and activities will come into proper focus. For more encouragement and parenting advice, visit Trail Life USA or RaisingGodlyBoys.com.

After tying up the parents and their young son, he brutally assaulted their eleven-year-old daughter. Then, he did something truly chilling: he made himself a snack, sat down, and ate it, leaving the family tied up and traumatized in the other rooms. This monster, who would eventually be dubbed “Mr. Cruel” by the media, was just getting started. He went on to terrorize the suburbs of Melbourne, executing highly planned child abductions that sparked one of the largest police investigations in Australian history. Nicole Dyer and Diana Elder explore Leo, a powerful handwritten text recognition platform designed specifically for researchers. Nicole interviews the creator, Jon Cooper, a PhD candidate at Stanford who developed the tool with a machine learning expert to address the difficulty of transcribing complex Elizabethan manuscripts. Listeners learn how Leo differs from general AI models by prioritizing faithful, accurate transcriptions of handwritten text rather than guessing words. The platform offers specialized features for genealogists, including the ability to recognize tabular data, crop and rotate document images, and refine transcriptions using multiple model inputs. Diana shares her own experience testing the tool on a two-page 1830s deed, finding it to be a user-friendly and accurate resource. The episode also highlights Leo's "Transformations" feature, which helps users move beyond basic transcription. Listeners discover how this tool summarizes content, identifies key people and places, and translates non-English sources. While the platform is advanced, the hosts discuss important limitations, such as challenges with tiny marginalia, double-page spreads, and predicting rare proper names. Ultimately, this episode demonstrates how Leo serves as a force multiplier for genealogists, helping them turn raw digital images into searchable, summarized, and interpreted research assets. This summary was generated by Google Gemini. THE PRIME OF MR. NEVILLE BRODY — “Once you have broken down the rules, literally anything is possible.'” In the business of magazine design, few names resonate as profoundly as Neville Brody. And, to this day, he lives by those words.  Renowned for his groundbreaking work and commitment to pushing design boundaries at magazines like The Face, Arena, Per Lui, and others, Brody is a true auteur in the world of design. We talked to him at the launch of his spectacular new monograph, The Graphic Language of Neville Brody 3. Nurtured on 1970s British punk music, which rejected anything that appeared self-indulgent or overwrought, Brody found the perfect launch pad at The Face, the London-based music, fashion, and culture monthly, created by editor Nick Logan in 1980. The Face inspired an array of fellow magazine rule-breakers, including the late Tibor Kalman, David Carson, and Fabien Baron, who calls Brody's work “powerful, aggressive, and simple.” Since then, Brody's journey in graphic design has been marked by a relentless, almost unforgiving pursuit of innovation. His magazine design challenged conventional norms and redefined visual storytelling. Brody's design approach is characterized by a rejection of conventional grid systems and editorial hierarchies, and a willingness to break free from established design rules. And he thinks magazines today are missing a giant opportunity: “That's the beauty of print, that you can't achieve in the same way digitally. Digital is so commoditized. We're not expressing content anymore. We're just delivering it. Neville Brody's legacy in magazine design lies in his fearless approach to challenging the status quo and his ability to capture the zeitgeist of his time. By pushing the boundaries of traditional graphic design, he not only influenced the look and feel of magazines but also inspired a generation of designers to embrace innovation, experimentation, and a spirit of creative rebellion. Brody's work continues to be celebrated for its enduring impact on the evolution of graphic design and its role in shaping the visual language of contemporary media. Send us Fan MailA flat-looking Tour de France stage can still feel like survival, especially when the thermometer sits around 95°F and the roads funnel every sprinter's team into the same narrow goal. We break down Stage 8 from Parigo to Bergerac: a breakaway kept on a short leash, no crosswind chaos, and a fast, technical run-in where the big names stay upright and the peloton finally detonates into a full-speed sprint. Tim Miller makes it two straight stage wins, while the general classification contenders play it safe and finish together to protect their time.Along the way, we answer a question every new cycling fan asks sooner or later: if a rider grabs the team car after a mechanical, is that cheating? We explain what's typically allowed when there's a real issue being fixed, why commissaires can be subjective in the moment, and how “sticky bottles” blur the line between help and an illegal tow. If you've ever watched a Tour de France broadcast and wondered what you just saw, this part is for you. Then we shift into the history that makes the Tour feel bigger than sport. The Tour's origin as a newspaper war, the real reason the yellow jersey is yellow, the 1904 cheating scandal with alleged train rides, and how the word domestique goes from insult to the most important job in a leader's support system. We also share details on the publicity caravan, massive roadside crowds, and the kind of calorie burn that makes “20 plates of pasta” sound almost reasonable. We close with two unforgettable cultural notes: Gino Bartali's secret WWII heroism and the ancient cave paintings near the route, plus a quick update that you can now watch us on Spotify video. Subscribe, share the show with a cycling fan, and leave a review with your take: where should the rulebook draw the line on sticky bottles?Support the showAdam and Michael's friendship has grown through years of shared miles, challenges, and laughter on the bike. Their passion for cycling has carried them through life's twists and turns, creating a bond full of stories, jokes, and unforgettable rides. In their podcast, they bring that same spirit to the mic—sharing adventures, trading banter, and welcoming listeners into their cycling community. Whether tackling steep climbs or cruising open roads, their conversations capture the fun, friendship, and freedom that cycling brings. In August of 2023, police raided a small local newspaper in rural Kansas, seizing computers and cellphones. Later, the paper's publisher would discover there was no legal basis for the search. On this week's On the Media, find out who was behind the raid, and what the saga reveals about the plight of local journalism today.  [01:00] On a Friday morning in a small, rural town in Kansas, the publisher of the local newspaper opens his door to see the police. They have a search warrant in hand, and within minutes, they're searching his home. He finds out that at the same time, officers are combing through his newsroom, seizing computers and cellphones. All of this comes as a massive surprise – no warning, no subpoena, and, as he later finds out, no legal right.  This week, we're airing an episode of KCRW's Question Everything, hosted by Brian Reed, which digs into why this violent raid occurred, who's behind it, and the long-lasting, tragic ramifications.  On the Media is supported by listeners like you.
