Camille Labchuk and Jessica Scott-Reid give an update on ag gag laws in Canada, including police handing out tickets to protesters outside of Fearmans Pork slaughterhouse, Ontario releasing info on draft regulations for ag gag Bill 156, a new provision under the bill going into effect that now prohibits advocates from stopping transport trucks, and Manitoba launching public consultations for its own troubling ag gag legislation.
In the face of opposition from legal scholars, animal rights advocates, and associations of journalists, Ontario has now passed unconstitutional ag-gag laws, an attempt to silence whistleblowers who expose animal cruelty. Nate speaks with Animal Justice lawyer Camille Labchuk and University of Alberta law professor Peter Sankoff about efforts in Ontario and across our country to hide animal cruelty on farms. Check out Camille and Peter's own podcast Paw and Order and donate to the efforts of Animal Justice to strike down these unconstitutional laws at animaljustice.caThis episode is dedicated to Regan Russell, a kind and passionate animal rights advocate who was fatally hit by a pig transport truck while protesting the new ag-gag laws outside of a slaughterhouse. We need more people like Regan in the world, those who dedicate so much of their lives to the pursuit of justice for others. She put herself in harm's way to help animals in distress, and it is hard to accept that she lost her life bearing witness to animal cruelty mere days after Ontario's legislature moved to make her activism criminal.
Kevin Gosztola, journalist, documentary filmmaker, writer for Shadowproof.com and co-host of the podcast Unauthorized Disclosure, described the recent court victories against “ag-gag” laws, which protect huge factory farms against investigations that publicize their cruelty to animals, employees and the environment. He described the role of ALEC, the American Legislative Exchange Council, in creating these business-friendly laws, and how US courts seem to have recognized that these laws target speech illegally. These laws sometimes call for huge fines for people who reveal abuses like blatant violations of environmental or animal cruelty regulations, and while these court victories are a positive trend, the corporations that want them have deep pockets and are very motivated to keep their practices under wraps.
We explore some of the many reasons for switching to a plant-based diet focusing on five main themes: personal health, animal rights, the environment, social justice, and public health. In our discussion on personal health we examine cholesterol, trans fats, heart disease, and diabetes. In regard to the animal protection we explore animals’ intellect and personalities, wildlife protection, species extinction, wildlife services, the humane myth, and labels such as free-range, cage-free, and grass-fed. As we discuss the environment, we explore climate change, greenhouse gas emissions, land use, water use, pollution, and deforestation. When we look at our food choices through a social justice lens, we discuss systemic racism in the food system, food apartheid, and world hunger. Finally, when we look at how our diets affect public health, we discuss zoonotic diseases, antibiotic use in livestock, and diet-related diseases. The nation's oldest “ag-gag” law was struck down last week in Kansas. Katharine and Valene thought that a closer examination of ag-gag laws was called for this week. They discuss the history and background of these types of laws, and why they're suddenly falling like dominoes. They dive into how animal agriculture producers need to take this issue seriously, and talk about some ways that we, as an industry and as individuals, can protect ourselves, our livelihoods, and the animals we so tremendously care for.
There is an epic battle between animal activists seeking to reveal the institutional cruelty of modern day factory farming and the industry itself, which seeks to paint a bucolic image of happy farm animals. This struggle is playing out across the globe, in the US, Europe, Latin America and, now in particular, Canada! This podcast focuses on the animal rights movement in Canada, where activists are being arrested as pro-ag industry politicians push for laws to quash undercover investigations and the fast growing campaign to bear witness at slaughterhouses, a movement that began in Ontario, Canada.

Ag-Gag Laws and the First Amendment, Carious CAFOS and the Endangerment of the Endangered Species ActDiscussion with Cristina Stella on the advent and continuance of Ag-gag laws that criminalize undercover reporting at animal enterprises and their violation of First and Fourteenth Amendment rights. We also discuss the First Amendment violation of “food censorship” laws that prohibit meat and milk alternatives from using “milk” and “meat” in the name of their products. We discuss humane washing cases and the conditions of animals in concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). Additionally, we discuss the impact CAFOs have on our public health, the environment and the quality of life of surrounding populations. We also discuss the exemptions CAFOs have obtained from environmental regulations and the current roll-backs to the Endangered Species Act and the pending litigation challenging these. For More Info:li>https://aldf.org/issue/ag-gag/https://aldf.org/case/challenging-iowas-ag-gag-2-0-law/https://aldf.org/article/lawsuit-challenges-constitutionality-of-arkansas-ag-gag-law/https://aldf.org/article/federal-rule-allowing-cruel-high-speed-pig-slaughter-violates-federal-law/https://aldf.org/article/animal-legal-defense-fund-sues-tillamook-for-deceptive-advertising/https://aldf.org/article/tofurky-mounts-free-speech-challenge-against-arkansas-meat-label-law/https://aldf.org/case/challenging-fsas-medium-sized-cafo-exemptions/https://aldf.org/article/the-edge-of-extinction-hundreds-of-vulnerable-animal-species-in-danger-under-endangered-species-act-rollbacks/https://www.noaa.gov/media-release/gulf-of-mexico-dead-zone-is-largest-ever-measuredhttps://www.centerforfoodsafety.org/files/animal_drug_es_10_26_77814.pdfhttps://aldf.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/CAFOs-Plaguing-North-Carolina-Communities-of-Color.pdfhttps://aldf.org/case/challenging-factory-farms-exemption-from-pollution-reporting-requirements/https://www.humanesociety.org/sites/default/files/docs/public-impacts-factory-farms-on-communities.pdf

By now you've likely seen the video and heard about the animal mistreatment at Fair Oaks Farms. Sadly, for the Business of Agriculture, this isn't going away any time soon. In fact, I see animal activists increasing their attacks on livestock production and processing based on the response to the Fair Oaks video. Katharine Lotspeich is a partner in her family's large scale Utah dairy operation and an Ag professional. She joins me to discuss Ag's poor handling of this incident, the real agenda of animal activists, and the reality for Agriculture moving forward. Make no mistake, this incident hurts Agriculture, strains relating with our customers, and strengthens the radical animal rights cause groups who paint this as the norm. Our industry needs to do a better job of addressing this — we'll tell you how.
Do the giant agricultural companies and cattle ranchers have the right to be protected against those who shed light on their business practices and their impact on the environment? Or does the First Amendment have something to say about that? Aaron Freiwald, Managing Partner of Freiwald Law and host of the weekly podcast Good Law | Bad Law, is joined by David Muraskin from the non-profit organization, Public Justice, to talk about Ag-Gag laws. Aaron and David discuss the ins and outs of Ag-Gag laws as well as David’s ground-breaking case in Wyoming. Like other gag laws, Ag-Gag laws are specifically designed to protect the agriculture industry by making it difficult for people to speak out against industrial practices and conditions that impact animal welfare and the environment. David explains some of the history behind these laws in addition to some of the major cases. In Public Justice’s Wyoming case, David was successful in invoking the First Amendment as a way of challenging these highly restrictive and protectionist state laws. Join Aaron and David for this important conversation on the agriculture industry and Ag-Gag laws. To learn more about David you can read his bio at https://www.publicjustice.net/team/david-muraskin/. The Idaho law was just struck down as unconstitutional, but according to Ferber, don’t expect these laws in other states […]
Emily Meredith and Katy Keiffer talk about monitoring slaughter facilities and ag gag laws on this week’s Straight, No Chaser. Emily Meredith is the communications director for the Animal Agriculture Alliance. Established in 1987, the Animal Agriculture Alliance includes individuals, companies, and organizations who are interested in helping consumers better understand the role animal agriculture plays in providing a safe, abundant food supply to a hungry world. Emily is also a blogger for the industry blog, Meatingplace.com. Tune in to hear Emily and Katy talk about third-party audits, and if they would actually make slaughter processes more transparent. Do organizations like the Human Society hurt the livestock industry? Does Emily believe that animal abuse is systemic? Find out on this week’s Straight, No Chaser! This episode has been sponsored by Bi-Rite Market. “There is a huge disconnect between the consumer and the producer. This country is fed by less than 2% of the population.” [25:25] — Emily Meredith on Straight, No Chaser

This week on Straight, No Chaser, host Katy Keiffer discusses the Ag Gag Laws with Amanda Hitt is the Director of the Food Integrity Campaign (FIC) for the Government Accountability Project. Amanda oversees FIC operations and is responsible for ensuring that FIC fulfills its mission of enhancing food integrity by facilitating truth telling. Iowa and Utah have just enacted new Ag Gag Laws, and clearly there is an increased interest in the industry to enact more of this type of legislation. Ag-gag bills remain pending in Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New York and Tennessee. Is transparency a good idea for the livestock and farming industry or will people get the wrong idea with the curtain pulled back? This program was sponsored by S. Wallace Edwards & Sons. “The whole business of agriculture as we know it requires a certain veil of secrecy.” “We need to change our relationship to the industry itself, and how they present themselves with regards to food safety and wholesomeness. More than often that presentation is not grounded in reality.” –Amanda Hitt, Director of the Food Integrity Campaign
