Teagasc Beef Specialist, David Argue, is on this week's Beef Edge discussing cattle finished so far this year and, given current increasing beef prices, budgets for the coming months. So far this year up to March 16th, 398,076 cattle have been finished according to the Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine. This is an increase of almost 11,000 head of cattle in comparison to the same time last year. With regards to live exports, tighter cattle supplies across Europe and movement restrictions implemented in some key cattle trading markets due to the spread of bluetongue, are key contributing factors behind the continued firm demand for Irish cattle in key export markets in the early weeks of 2025. The 2025 calf trade has been slower to start in line with later calf registrations, however, it has increased strongly in week ending 2nd March. There has been a total of 18,963 calves exported since the start of 2025, a 58% decrease on the same time period in 2024. Quotes from major processors have continued to trend upward and this has been reflected in a balance between supply and demand currently in favour of producers. With farmers with forward stores questioning whether they should go to grass or be kept in and finished, David highlights some key considerations and costs of production ranging from €215 to €311. When looking at a 400kg store animal, David discusses the costs of production for a 20 months store or 24 month finished steer with costs ranging from €126 to €476. David advises the importance of looking at the costs of the production system and take all other factors into account. Beef prices in the US started 2025 at a record high. The world's largest consumer is also seeing a 63-year low in the size of its cattle herd and is expected to continue calling on supplies from Brazil and Australia, the world's two biggest exporters. That's because US farmers have been sending a high proportion of female animals to slaughter before they calved, shrinking their beef operations in response to low prices and higher costs. Luckily, Brazil and Australia are at different stages of the cattle cycle. In this podcast, William Bland, EMEA manager of price reporting for Agriculture & Food, and Ryan Urie, the global head of meat and livestock research, speak to Kevin Coburn and Renan Araujo about how the market is planning for 2025. In this episode of the ESG Insider podcast we're exploring solutions to sustainability challenges in food systems and agriculture. Climate change poses risks to global food supply chains and agricultural production. At the same time, the world's growing population means food needs are increasing. We discuss sustainable agriculture trends with Michelle French, Director of Global Sustainability Programs at global commodities agriculture company ADM. Speaking on the sidelines of the GreenBiz conference in Phoenix in February, Michelle describes the challenges of tracking emissions associated with farming, the benefits of regenerative agriculture, and how ADM is working with farmers. Also in this episode, we hear from Troy Albright, Founder and CEO of a vertical, climate-controlled aeroponic farm in Phoenix that uses a technology that reduces land and water use while also helping address food insecurity. And we talk with Stephen Ritz, founder of the nonprofit organization Green Bronx Machine, which teaches students in hundreds of schools around the world how to grow food. Stephen explains how STEM programs can transform youth academically as well as their relationship to food and sustainability. Food security is a public good and the Government should use England's post Brexit environmental payment system to incentivise it; so say MPs on the Environmental Audit Committee in a report out this week. This year food and farming has been on the official COP agenda for the first time. It's taken 28 years but tomorrow will see a full day of the COP dedicated to food and farming, a 'game changer' according to the hosts in Dubai. It's been a difficult week for many farmers, with torrential rain and heavy snowfalls, especially in Cumbria. Andrea Meanwell farms in the Howgills and has a herd of Belted Galloway cattle. She went out to find them when the snow came down, and had to go on foot when the diesel in her all terrain vehicle froze.Presented by Charlotte Smith and produced by Beatrice Fenton.

With the launch of the new National Beef Welfare Scheme by the Department of Agriculture Food & the Marine, which replaces Beep-S, on this week's Beef Edge podcast, Catherine Egan is joined by Teagasc Beef specialist Aidan Murray to get all the details. The new scheme which is funded by the Brexit Adjustment Reserve (BAR) is a one year programme and it essentially replaces the old BEEP-S scheme where applicants had to weigh the unweaned cow and calf, with the option of either meal feed pre & post weaning or vaccinate calves and optional faecal sampling. For the new scheme the weighing component no longer features as it now part of the Suckler Cow Efficiency Programme (SCEP) while the faecal sampling and the calf vaccination have also been dropped. There are no optional components this time around, both required measures are mandatory: 1. IBR Testing - Each participant must commit to participate in the IBR testing action managed by ICBF on behalf of DAFM. They are required to engage a PVP who will blood sample and test up to twenty bovine animals per herd, ideally 9 months old (if feasible) or above if present in the herd, or all ages if there is less than 20 in the herd for IBR gE antibodies.Where a herd has twenty or more bovines, a minimum of twenty must be tested. Where aherd has less than twenty bovines, ALL must be tested. No. of bovines tested Payment per herdBetween 2 to 6 animals (inclusive)€120Between 7 to 10 animals (inclusive) €180Between 11 to 15 animals (inclusive)€250Between 16 to 20 animals (inclusive) €300 2. Meal Feeding – Participants must introduce meal feeding for a period of 4 weeks pre-weaning and 2 weeks post-weaning to reduce the stress on calves at weaning time. Eligible suckler calves are those born between 1stJuly 2022 and 30th June 2023. The rate of payment is €35 per calf for a maximum of 40 calves. Applications Applications are open online at www.agfood.ie and will remain open until midnight on 12th September. Applicants may apply themselves online or they can get their approved FAS adviser to apply. It is important to note that there is no late application facility with this scheme so 12th September will be the final date for applications Once you make an application it will be up to you to make contact with the vet (PVP) to arrange the IBR blood testing. The vet will then send the samples to one of the DAFM approved labs. Because DAFM hope to make payments for the scheme before the end of 2023, both actions of meal feeding and IBR testing will have to be undertaken by 1st November. Duluth officials said they are proud of the city's newest public art, a mural called “Meet Me on Main” that is painted on the back window of the Nacho Daddy building, which is located on Main St. The officials say it allows people to step back in time to the old Duluth. Brenda Ehly is the artist behind the piece. She said she was inspired from a phrase on the city's seal that she saw when she first moved to Duluth. Ehly is no stranger to the Duluth art scene. Her notable pieces in downtown Duluth include: ♦ Dream Big mural at Hill Street & West Lawrenceville ♦ Painted bike rack at Hill Street & West Lawrenceville ♦ Two paintings displayed in Maple Street Biscuit Company♦ ♦ Interior & exterior signage at both Crave Pie & Harper Row ♦ Backdrop for the model train set at the Southeastern Railway Museum ♦ Pen & ink depiction of City Hall located inside City Hall as part of our permanent art collection Gwinnett County commissioners agreed to partner with the Georgia Department of Transportation on one proposed new interchange on an interstate in the county and to team up with the city of Buford on a draft report for another proposed interchange on a different interstate. One of the interchanges is the long-discussed proposed McGinnis Ferry Road interchange on Interstate 85 in Suwanee. The other is a proposed interchange on Interstate 985 at Thompson Mill Road in Buford. The partnership with Georgia DOT pertains to right-of-way acquisition for the McGinnis Ferry Road interchange on I-85. The interchange has been in the planning stages for years and advertisements calling for construction bids for the project are expected to be posted this year. The other project, with Buford, is further off, however. In fact, it only recently go the OK from federal officials to even be considered. Under the agreement, the county and Buford will jointly fund the creation of a draft project concept report on a proposed new interchange on I-985 at Thompson Mill Road. Each side will pay $500,000 for the study, with the county using 2017 special purpose local option sales tax funds for is portion of the cost. “Producing ‘American Son' is part of a season of site specific shows about moving forward in the face of adversity,” Live Arts Theatre's Co-Artistic Director Becca Parker said. If the name “American Son” is familiar, it was a 2019 movie directed by Kenny Leon and written by Christopher Demos-Brown. The movie was based on Demos-Brown's play of the same name. American Son' touches many avenues of life such as interracial relationships, being the product of an interracial relationship, and different levels of profiling by those in power as well as the public. The story centers around a bi-racial couple who must confront their feelings about race and bias after their son is detained by the local police following a traffic stop incident. Because of the language which is described as “severe adult,” other adult topics and moderate violence, the play is recommended for audiences ages 16 and up. The audience is also cautioned that the production contains racially charged language and an audio depiction of a shooting. Leading the production are Le Titia Sloan as Kendra Ellis-Conner, the mother of the “American Son.” R. Chandler Bragg portrays Scott Conner, the father who is estranged from Kendra. The cast is completed by Santiago Vargas as Officer Paul Larkin and Live Arts Theatre Pro Company member D. Norris as Lieutenant Stokes. The production opens today and runs through Sunday. Friday and Saturday evening performances are at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday show begins at 2:30 p.m. Tickets start at $15. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service Southeast Region announced Tuesday that Georgia and Tennessee are two of 14 states that have been selected to participate in the expansion of a demonstration project to evaluate the impact of using Medicaid eligibility data to directly certify students from low-income households to receive free and reduced-price school meals. Historically, most students who receive these meals have been certified based on information they submit in an application. Officials say adding Medicaid to the list of benefit programs that can “directly certify” a student to receive free or reduced-price meals is a win-win for students, families, and school officials. This means less paperwork for families and fewer school meal applications for school districts to process and verify. The remaining 12 states selected to participate in this round of the project are Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Montana, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Vermont and Wyoming. The newest round of this demonstration creates an important opportunity to further test the impact of Medicaid Direct Certification, which was first initiated through the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The Biden Administration is committed to expanding direct certification opportunities and certifying more eligible children for free and reduced-price meals without an application. Portland Public Schools is extending its free meal program, now offering no-cost breakfasts and lunches at 53 of its 81 schools. Whitney Ellersick with PPS Nutrition Services says it's about bringing everyone to the table. This is thanks to the Community Eligibility Provision Pogram. It's part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service, which provides free meals for school districts in low-income areas. But it's not just about making food accessible, Ellersick says. It's also about sourcing local. She says at least 32% of food is purchased in the Pacific Northwest. Do you know where your food comes from? Is it grown in a farm on the outskirts of your city or flown in from another country? How is food security different from food sovereignty? What happens to the waste that is generated in the process of consumption? And how can cities be planned with a food-sensitive approach? These are some of the questions we ask in season 4 of Architecture Off-Centre while speaking to artists, scientists, planners, and activists to map the contemporary concerns in the food systems around us.

The Universal School Meals Program Act was passed last year to ensure that every child had free lunch regardless of income, as the pandemic brought more food insecurity to homes, but the program cut when Congress reduced pandemic-era spending in the 2022 budget. Congress did not extend United States Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service authority to allow all students to eat school meals free of charge in school year 2022 to 2023, a choice that will effect around 10 million children this school year, according to Forbes. Dr. Patty Bennett, Regional Administrator for the United States Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service, said all students will receive free or reduced school school meals, this year there's just one additional step, to submit an application. Last Friday Governor Tom Wolf announced his over $21 million dollar plan to provide universal free school breakfast for 1.7 million students across the commonwealth this school year. Bennet said, the USDA is thrilled about this but families will still need to submit applications for school lunch. Bennet said, application can be submitted at anytime throughout the school year. To apply for free and reduced school meals reach out to your local school district for next steps.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Opposites are one of the first things we teach children: big-small, short-long, happy-sad. But how universal is the idea of opposites? What's the opposite of a banana for example? In our latest podcast, we take an in-depth look at the concept of opposites. We attempt to define opposites, exploring whether they are based on categorical or quantifiable features, or some intuitive interpretation of context. Finally, we examine how they can be used to help us navigate our environment, supporting rapid analysis and decision-making. And if you're interested in knowing what the opposite of a banana is, Nick will reveal the analytical output of his opposite-generator model. You may find the answer surprising or predictable, rigorous or widely speculative. Just over 3% of herds in Ireland will go down with TB in any given year and on this week's episode of the Beef Edge Podcast, Catherine Egan is joined by Philip Breslin, Superintending Veterinary Inspector with the Department of Agriculture Food & the Marine to discuss all things related to bovine TB. Philip outlines how the herd test works and why farmers have to do a herd test every year. Wildlife have been shown to play an important role in spreading TB to cattle in Ireland. The department are responsible for removing badgers from areas where there are severe TB outbreaks and introduced badger vaccination in recent years. Philip discusses the Wildlife Unit's work in reducing the risk of passing infection from wildlife to badgers. Unfortunately, too many herds experience TB breakdowns and farm families are all too familiar with the stress that this can cause. Philip discusses how the proposed new strategy to eradicate TB will reduce the number of affected farms. He also provides some practical tips on what steps farmers can take to reduce the risk of TB in their herd For further information visit: https://www.agriculture.gov.ie/animalhealthwelfare/ For more episodes and information covered on the Beef Edge, visit the show page at: teagasc.ie/thebeefedge

The 2020 Animal Health Awareness Week organised by the Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine is taking place this week from 23rd-28th November. On this week's Beef Edge Podcast, Mícheál Casey, Head of DAFM Regional Veterinary Laboratories (RVL) gives an insight into the many services they provide to farmers. The RVL network provides animal post-mortem examinations, surveillance of disease and laboratory diagnostic services and expertise to the farming community via veterinary practitioners. Mícheál highlights that like farmers, the laboratories are busy in the spring with issues arising around the time of calving resulting in post-mortems being done. The RVLs also encounters cases from issues incurred from respiratory diseases in calves resulting from poor ventilation or death as a result of calf scour outbreaks. In the past few weeks a common finding has been death from lung worm where owners suspect treatments have been ineffective, but in fact the laboratories believe it is the effect of heavy infestations after treatment. Surveillance of disease is also a major part of the role of RVL as they are on the front line to detect exotic diseases. Mícheál recalls the outbreak of Foot and Mouth in 2001 which farmers will never forget, and which reminds us of the need for ongoing vigilance and early detection. BRAND SECRETS AND STRATEGIES: Empowering Brands | Raising The Bar
Brand success begins with clarity. How clearly do you articulate the value of your brand & why those benefits matter, where every conversation should begin. Authentic ingredients help shoppers know, like, & trust your brand - the bedrock of true loyalty. Welcome. If you've been listening for awhile you continually hear me tell you how I don't believe that brand should apologize for having quality ingredients. Customers want value, real value. They want products that they can know, like, and trust and that begins with the quality ingredients that you put into your product. After all, that's what differentiates your product from every other product on the shelf. The fact that you take the time to put the love and the care in selecting the very best ingredients that your customers want. This is all part of your messaging and you've got to be extremely clear when communicating that not only to the consumers but to the retailer. Why should a retailer put your product on their shelves over another product and that begins with helping to educate the retailer about the unique customer that buys your product and again that goes back to the ingredients. Today we're going to talk to a registered dietitian that helped design some of the messaging that retailers use. This is critically important because if you understand from their perspective what they're looking for you can better communicate to them. Again why your product matters. The best part about this Is she's the real deal. She's got a complete alphabet after her name. We’ll joke about that in a minute. The key point here is that your brand success begins with clarity, not confusion and that begins with connecting agriculture, food, and health to your consumers. Help them understand where their food comes from. This episode's FREE downloadable guide Trade marketing includes everything required to promote your brand. It's your growth engine and the largest item on your P&L. Most trade spending is wasted. Every brand seeks to maximize their promotional ROI. There is a better way to grow sales & profits. The topical area of antimicrobial use and resistance in pig production is covered by Amy Quinn on the latest Pig Edge podcast with Teagasc PhD student Lorcan O'Neill. Firstly Lorcan gives an overview of his study which looked at antimicrobial usage on Irish pig farms. He then discusses where the Irish pig industry stands in comparison to other countries in terms of measuring antimicrobial usage at farm level. Lorcan also touches on the new EU regulations governing antibiotic use which will be coming into effect in 2022. He then takes us through his study looking at antimicrobial resistance. Lorcan shares some of the main considerations for farmers looking to reduce their use of antibiotics on farm. There is a lot of talk recently about continuous cover forestry, timber plantations and development of native woodlands. I had an opportunity to explore the subject with my guest, Forestry Inspector and Fire Management Officer in the Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine, Ciaran Nugent. In my opinion, this is one of the most educational episodes of the podcast. During our conversation, we talk about the history of Irish forestry, its current direction, wildlife conservation and the delicate balance between plants and animals in the environment. We also spend some time discussing fires, their role in an ecosystem and fire prevention.
Erik Oberholtzer is a renowned professional chef who spent 10 years in some of the best fine dining kitchens in California. After getting his start at Chez Panisse, he cooked everywhere from Lark Creek Inn to Left Bank to Shutters on the Beach. Inspired by his relationships with local farmers and his access to fresh ingredients, he became passionate about finding a way to bring farm-to-fork to the masses. In 2006, he opened Tender Greens, a slow-foods-meets-fast-food restaurant in Culver City with an emphasis on affordable chef-created dishes. It has since grown to 28 locations spanning across both coasts and is backed by hospitality giant Danny Meyer. In this week’s episode, Erik and I discuss how he cultivates culture at Tender Greens, America’s shifting relationship with food, and why it’s an exciting time to be in the food space. We also talk about the "forgotten foods" you might be seeing on the Tender Greens menu soon, his commitment to regenerative agriculture, the collision of technology and food, and the power of partnership in growing a business.
