Driven to inspire other people with art, Brandon Victor Dixon has been sharing his talent with the world for decades now. And this month, the actor slash theatrical producer is part of the much-anticipated world premiere of the award-winning "MacGyver: The Musical's" album which will be released on January 27th. Apart from theatre, Brandon is also doing advocacy work. He talks about the We Are Foundation which he created, and how he uses it to bridge gaps between art and us as communities. He brings up a good point on human behavior, what makes it for some people to be kind, and how art can be a gateway to understanding and helping them. In choosing a role or a piece, he considers the tools that can make his role and the exchange between him and the audience the most effective. He adds that the pieces choose him and come into his life at a time when he needs them the most. When he was just starting, Brandon had to pause his graduation to go on a national tour, come back, finish school, and then originate a role on Broadway for which he got a Tony nomination. He recalls his audition process for the role of Simba, why he thinks he shouldn't have been cast, and how he overcame his doubts and the challenges he encountered as it was happening. This year marks the 100th Anniversary of Shuffle Along! The groundbreaking musical that kicked off a decade of vibrant black musical theatre on Broadway which included more than a dozen shows created by black songwriters, black bookwriters, black producers, black directors and choreographers -- and these shows brought hundreds of black actors, singers, dancers, and musicians to Broadway. This landmark event is being celebrated with the release of two wonderful new books – including the first full biography of Shuffle Along's composer titled -- Eubie Blake: Rags, Rhythm and Race by Richard Carlin & Ken Bloom And Footnotes: The Black Artists Who Rewrote the Rules of the Great White Way by Caseen Gaines. I have had the great pleasure of interviewing the authors of both of these books and you have the opportunity to meet all three of them in a series of upcoming episodes.  This week it is my honor to introduce you to Caseen Gaines whose extraordinary book, Footnotes, tells the story of how four young black artists -- Noble Sissle, Eubie Blake, Flournoy Miller and Aubrey Lyles overcame poverty, racism, violence and the legacy of slavery to produce a runaway Broadway hit that ushered in both the Harlem Renascence and the “Jazz Age” on Broadway. If you pay close attention to Broadway, as I know many of my listeners do, you will remember the that in 2016, writer and director George C. Wolfe created a star-studded Broadway musical which he tittled “Shuffle Along, or, the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed”. As that title suggests, this was not a revival or revisal of the of the original show but instead it attempted to tell the behind-the-scenes story of the making of Shuffle Along. You will also remember that it closed rather abrubtly and unexpectedly less than 3 months after it opened. This week our guest is Emma Campbell, author of "All That Followed- a story of Cancer, Kids and the Fear of Leaving Too Soon"; a memoir that takes us on the rollercoaster years of the birth of her son followed by IVF followed by Triplets. As the relationship with the father of her children began to crumble, and the prospect of single motherhood, Emma received the diagnosis of breast cancer. There was no choice but to keep going, accepting the kindness and support of friends and family. She met the man who was to become her husband known on Instagram as @soberdave and supported him as he gave up the booze. Emma went through two further returns of the cancer after the first diagnosis but she talks about how it was fear that was her big inner enemy. Writing was key to helping her and over time she has developed further tools to her help combat stress and anxiety. Gary and Roscoe wrap up 2016 - and good riddance to a challenging year - with an episode of year-end theater going and a few fun lists. First we revisit Hamilton and our recent viewing of the new Chicago production. From our Booth One perspective in the 11th row at the PrivateBank Theatre, this sit-down company is hands down as dynamic, entertaining and exciting as the Broadway show we saw in New York in May. It's not just a traveling road company - the show's creators have put together a virtual replica of the Broadway smash and re-produced one of the great theatrical experiences of a lifetime. Yes, ticket prices are steep and seats are hard to come by, but it's worth every penny and effort to get into this show. Take the time to play the lottery. 'Nuf said.... Our first year-end list is President Obama's final Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients: Alphabetically, they are Kareem Abdul-Jabaar, Ellen DeGeneres, Robert DeNiro, Bill and Melinda Gates, Frank Gehry, Tom Hanks, Michael Jordan, Maya Lin, Lorne Michaels, Newton Minow, Robert Redford, Diana Ross, Vin Scully, Bruce Springsteen, and Cicely Tyson. A special note is made about Newt Minow, close friend of our producer and a Chicago native, who famously referred to television as a "vast wasteland". Audra McDonald's pregnancy was a surprise. But was it an accident, an illness or neither? We discuss the lawsuit brought by the producers of the marvelous Shuffle Along, Or the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed against Lloyds of London, claiming damages of more than $12 million. Ms. McDonald's absence from the show for maternity leave prompted not only the show's early closing, but earlier health issues forced her to miss some preview performances. Ms. McDonald, who has won six Tony awards, was the show's biggest star. Lloyd's has denied the claims, arguing that the pregnancy "and the associated medical conditions were neither an 'accident' nor an 'illness'," criteria cited in the original $14 million insurance policy. Stand by for more on this unprecedented story... Pray. Eat raw eggs. Stay single. Those are the keys to a long life, according to Emma Morano, the world's oldest person. Emma celebrated her 117th birthday this week, and is a national treasure in her native Italy, where her birthday celebration was broadcast on live state television. Continuing our movie musical theme, Gary tells about a new Marc Platt project based on the book "Everything's Coming Up Profits: The Golden Age of Industrial Musicals".The source book focuses on corporate musicals made by the hundreds from the 1950s to the early 1980s by companies like Coca-Cola, Westinghouse and Chevrolet. Mostly played at business meetings and conventions, they were created by the top writing talent of the day, including Kander and Ebb. This original movie musical, featuring Kristen Wiig and Will Farrell, will have a score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Whitman of Harispray and Smash fame. Back to our lists - the Library of Congress as announced 25 new films added to the National Film Registry, recognized in the National Film Preservation Board's view as "culturally, historically and aesthetically significant." "Shuffle Along, or The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed"’s TONY-nominated director/librettist George C. Wolfe and TONY-nominated actors Brandon Victor Dixon and Adrienne Warren talk about their new Broadway musical.

One of the most interesting musicals to appear on Broadway this season brings a new look to an almost century-old story. Ninety-five years ago, Shuffle Along was an unprecedented sight on the Great White Way: a show written, produced, directed and performed by an African-American cast of characters. The not-quite-a-revival carries the unwieldy full title: Shuffle Along, or the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed, which New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood calls "truth in advertising."  The current production, starring Audra McDonald and Brian Stokes Mitchell with choreography by Savion Glover and direction by George C. Wolf (who also wrote the book), has earned 10 Tony Award nominations. Isherwood explains why the show is deserving of those accolades.
