World Animal Day approaches (probably), and we are celebrating (kind of) with two festive songs about animal companions! "Santa Claus Rides a Strawberry Roan" by Jim Lowe is unfortunately less about celebrating its titular animal companion and more about shit-talking reindeer. "Jingles the Christmas Cat" by Freddy Cole doesn't give us much more in terms of lore, but dang, does it go down smooth. The ranking music in this episode is, of course, "A Horse with No Name" by America. Thank you to Myles for requesting "Santa Claus Rides a Strawberry Roan"!

Among these was Sylvia Sims and it was as a direct result of this engagement that he was hired to work with Mel Tormé. In 1976 he moved to New York City and from the late 70s onwards through the next two decades and into the early years of the twenty-first century, he appeared on scores of albums, sometimes only as pianist but most often also as arranger. Renzi also plays keyboards and occasionally guitar. Developing his own, hard bop style, Renzi also became a much sought after arranger. In addition to her work as a media consultant, she has also worked in virtually all phases of the entertainment business, beginning as a ten year old principal actress with the Los Angeles area “Sherman Oaks Children's Repertory Theatre” – along with classmate, Melanie Griffith. Born into a show business family, Lesley's late father, Whitey Mitchell, was a veteran jazz bassist and Emmy Award winning comedy writer and producer, and her Uncle was the late jazz bass legend, Red Mitchell. In the scope of her own career, she has worked as a busy singer/dancer, and traveled with a number of name acts, including Mitzi Gaynor, Tommy Sands, Fabian and Robert Goulet, and has appeared in numerous television shows, features and TV Movies, including “Queer as Folk”, “The Jeffersons”, “Happy Days”, “Laverne and Shirley” and “Divorce Court.” After touring the Orient extensively with her own musical group, “Main Squeeze”, Lesley owned and operated a recording studio in Los Angeles where many jazz projects and much of the vocal work for Hanna-Barbara Cartoons was recorded. This is episode #12 of Entrepreneur Mindset-Reset. Hi everyone! Thanks for tuning-in today for a new episode of Entrepreneur Mindset-Reset, THE podcast where entrepreneurs just like you and me share how they master their mindset to overcome obstacles to their success. In today's episode, I am so excited to be speaking with the extremely talented and driven Bachot Muna, jazz pianist, sound engineer, singer, music producer and extraordinary human. He shares his journey from being a barefoot child growing up in a village in Cameroon to professional musician living in Europe. Bachot decided when he was 9 years old that he would one day live in Europe. His mother asked him not to leave Cameroon, but Bachot felt the magnetic pull to Europe and was so determined to go, that he made the 15 year-long journey to become a musician in Europe.  Bachot is self-taught on several instruments, but found his real love in playing piano. I am so impressed with his determination, extreme focus and unwavering belief in his abilities and calling, and I know you will be too.    You won't want to miss when he shares his story about how he managed to cross borders, even when he didn't have money or a place to stay, and yet, he managed to convince border officials to allow him to stay and continue his journey through western Africa to Europe.  Bachot reminds us to be honest with ourselves, follow our dreams no matter what, and to not be discouraged, even when things don't go our way, because we will learn so much along the way. His journey is remarkable and inspirational, and is a great reminder to keep working hard for the things we love.  Be sure to check out his music on Spotify, SoundCloud and YouTube. We've provided links in the show notes. You will love his gorgeous music. So, grab a beverage or a snack and settle-in to listen to Bachot and his amazing journey. Few years later he decided to make his passion his life, composing at the time his first song entitled "Essukud'am" (My studies) Bachot and some friends created a band called "Man-walk with whom he began to play organ; having no instrument at his disposal on wich to pratice, Bachot drew the keyboard on paper and excercised the melodies he memorised.  In Nigeria Bachot conducted an orchestra of 16 people with whom he took part in the "Sokoto Fishing Festival". Due to political unrest in the country, he was forced to leave and went successively to Benin, Togo, Niger, Burkina and ended up in Abidjan. Bachot decided to add another feather to his cap and learned how to become his own sound-engineer, resulting in the production of his fourth album "Africa Sa" (Dance Africa), thanks to the track"Loh Yonme", Bachot won the awards of "best singer" and best clip" of 1999 in Cameroon.  2003 Bachot was invited to perform as headliner for the 10 years celebration at the summer festival "l'été sous le charme" in  Dreux north of Paris France Bachot is a self-taught pianist, singer-songwriter Interpreter and arranger of a great talent who based in Brussels since early 90, having in his score several Cd's produced like, Ashikogo, Donne ton Dada, "Jazz & Dreams", a solo piano album release in 2012 with wich Bachot performed in the "Montreal Internaional Jazz Festival 2013" wish is the world must prestigeous Jazz Festival, in the concert hall "Theatre Maisonneuve" playing the first part of Maestro "Chucho Valdes" where the audience were entirely captured. Leaping out of Africa with the spirit of the indigenous wildlife, Bachot is capturing the heart and soul of music fans on every continent. Melding a unique combination of musical influences from many African nations, Bachot has created his on genre with the Afro Jazz fusion and Afro Pop music scene by fusing native rhythms with funk, soul, Latin Jazz and jazz. And now, Bachot has just release his new album entitled "Back To The Roots".  But what inspired Bachot  to compose the album Back To The Roots? After performing the Montreal International Jazz Festival 2013, Bachot decided to come out with a new album project. But the most important for him was to work with other experimented and expressifs musicians around the world. First of all, Bachot wanted to find a great Brazilian percussionist, because he had in mind to record and Afro Jazz Fusion Album. Bachot went to meet his friend Andre Bontems owner of Avalon Studio Brussels and told him his ambition. Andre Bontems after listening to Bachot said to him, I wanna show you something. He brought out a live video he recorded where was performing a wonderful Brazilian percussionist named ZE LUIS Nascimento , Bachot was blow out by the performance of this guy, and he said to Andre his friend, this is my man. The first piece of the puzzle was found. It is important to notice that ZE LUIS Nascimento perform often with Michel Legrand and many French great artists.  Bachot started the recording in Paris at Bopcity studio with ZE LUIS Nascimento, where he recorded the percussions and some vocal parts of Essukud'am, Hey Ohohah with the participation of his nephew Ray Dikoumé. And after Paris Bachot flew away to Tallinn at Green Room  Studio  to record with the bass player Kareel Liive, the guitarist Paul Daniel, and the great Trombonist Eduard Akulin who did a tour with Freddy Cole the brother of Nat King Cole few years ago. And then back to Brussels where Bachot recorded lady Dunia Molina cristal voice parts . The mixing and mastering done in New York City, was handled by the 13 grammy awards winner Mike Makowsky. (Mike credits: Amy Winehouse, Mariah Carey, Gorillaz, Usher, Maxwell, John Legend, Kenye West, Kid Cudi, Jim Jones, Kelis, Nas, etc..) This album "Back To The Roots" is a mix of African Brazilian groove and Jazz. The final result is a pleasant and groovy Afro Jazz Fusion album. (Heavily recommended this genius to everyone...Amazing talent, said Mike Makowsky) All those who have listening to this album "Back to the roots" of Bachot are unanimous that it's an so happy and uplifting album, full of great spirit, émotion and happiness that capture your soul.  (Anecdotally, when Mike Makowski was mixing with Bachot and the music began to sound like Bachot wanted, then Bachot smiled with pleasure, Mike looked the spirited smile and said, I feel that I am in the studio with Miles Davis, you really resemble like him a lot)  January 2016, Bachot won "the Akademia Awards" Los Angeles for best Latin Song from his track "Samba Makossa", and in 2017 he won another award of best Afro soul with his track" A Muto" 2018-2020. Known also as a great entertainer, Bachot is touring around the world as a solo pianist singer and interpreter in country like: Hong Kong, Shenzen, Canada and Germany where is performing as resident artist in the world top 5 stars:  Brenners Park hotel Baden Baden, Hessischer Hof Frankfurt, Breidenbacher Hof Dusseldorf, Maritim Hotel Travemunde, Maritim Ulm, Eden Rock hotel Ascona... Upward and Onward Productions Presents “Our Meeting at the Crossroads” music series episode “Red Clay Chronicles”. This segment is all about Tony Hightower's road to jazz. Host Darren Lorenzo, takes you inside this musical experience. Join us for talks about Atlanta, the music industry and jazz. The art of cool has been wayward since the likes of Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Mel Tormé, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane. As represented by these legends of jazz, cool is a state of mind, an attitude of confidence and strength in one's craft. Jazz artist Tony Hightower encompasses a new age cool that is part homage and part regeneration. Being not only an admirer but a student of the genre, Hightower's passion and direct connection to jazz music allows him the advantage of properly emulating the timelessness of the classics without the kitsch while still injecting his own interpretations.Tony Hightower was immersed in multiple forms of music as a child. The son of prominent jazz vocalist Theresa Hightower, his experiences with music, jazz in particular, were ingrained in his upbringing. Regularly witnessing not only his mother perform but a wide range of talented artists helped shape his own penchants for singing and arranging. Hightower's inherent musical expertise spans genres, allowing him opportunities to create with such talents as Lionel Ritchie, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Outkast, Dottie Peoples, Charlie Wilson and a roster of other artists and producers. Critically acclaimed musicians Freddy Cole and Wycliffe Gordon have both acknowledged Hightower's ingenuity in regards to The New Standard, with Cole providing musical guidance throughout the conception while Gordon praised the project as a “great recording.” However, accolades for this album don't stop there; The New Standard received a nomination, amongst veterans and major label-backed artists, as a candidate for the Grammy's 2015 Best Jazz Vocal Album. Although the candidacy did not manifest into an official nomination, this high achievement further validates the authenticity of Hightower's purist jazz vision. The bare honesty in Tony Hightower's works emit not only through his albums but also in his performances. Speaking on the live experience, he reflects, “Performing live is like a conversation, a conference call; the musicians are having a conversation on stage and then having a conversation with the audience. I enjoy the connection I'm able to have with the [listeners].” With only his passion and vocals on stage, along with the assistance of his band, Hightower confidently shares his labor of love and His respect for the cool. “After Talk” Host, Director and Creator - Darren LorenzoCo host, Sound Editor, Sound Mixer - Bruno Diaz

Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts; The United Trombone Summit (Indiana University) featuring Slide Hampton, Steve Turre, Curtis Fuller and Bill Watrous; Birmingham Jazz Festival; The Gulf Coast Ethnic & Heritage Festival; performed at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, CA in A Tribute To Ray Charles; the Mount Vernon Jazz Series in Golden, CO with jazz masters Nicholas Payton and Russell Malone; and notable NYC jazz clubs as Minton's, Birdland, Smalls, Smoke; Jazz at Lincoln Center and its Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola.Conerway, a proud Detroit native, made extraordinary use of the many educational and cultural opportunities of that formidable city, performing as a high school student on The Detroit Jazz Festival stages and spending several years studying under the tutelage of the late, great trumpeter, Marcus Belgrave as a member of the Detroit Symphony's Civic Jazz Orchestra. His thirst for the jazz idiom was nurtured there by his mother, a lover of music, who made sure he experienced live performances of all types; and his father, a brilliant classical violinist, who also shared a deep and abiding love for jazz music in all its incarnations. While matriculating at Atlanta's historic and prestigious Morehouse College (B.A. in Music Composition), Henry co-founded the group, Jaspects, which quickly became a staple in that city's music scene and successfully sold thousands of their own recordings, while booking their own tours and forming creative collaborations with such luminaries as Maroon 5's P.J. Morton; Grammy nominated Janelle Monáe; Tyler Perry's Tony Hightower, and Chantae Cann; who can each be heard on Jaspects' recordings. Henry has also composed original works for film and performed in theatre settings including the Tony Award nominated Shuffle Along, or, the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed, on Broadway. We're featuring an interview with bassist Larry Gray on this week's episode.  Larry's multi-instrumental path has taken him through performance on guitar, flute, cello, and piano in addition to bass.  Larry is in high demand as a jazz bassist in Chicago, performing regularly for decades at Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase, and he teaches at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  Enjoy! About Larry Born on Chicago’s south side, Larry Gray is considered by many to be one of jazz music’s finest double bassists. His impressive versatility and uncommon musical curiosity keep him in demand as both a leader and sideman. Larry began his musical studies at the age of five when his father brought home an accordion and introduced him to his first teacher. Invigorated by this study, Larry added the guitar to his arsenal and studied piano seriously for many years thereafter. It was not until he was in his twenties that he decided to switch to the double bass. Larry went on to study classical music extensively, eventually adding the cello to his long list of loved instruments. His principal teachers were Joseph Guastafeste, longtime principal bassist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and cellist Karl Fruh, a highly regarded soloist and teacher. Under Mr. Fruh's guidance, he received bachelors and masters degrees in cello performance from the Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University. Throughout his long and varied career, Larry has worked with numerous exceptional artists and jazz legends, including McCoy Tyner, Jack DeJohnette, Danilo Perez, Branford Marsalis, Benny Green, Freddy Cole, Benny Golson, Steve Turre, George Coleman, Lee Konitz, Bobby Hutcherson, Sonny Fortune, Ira Sullivan, Junior Mance, David "Fathead" Newman, Willie Pickens, Ann Hampton Callaway, Charles McPherson, Antonio Hart, Jackie McLean, Sonny Stitt, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Al Cohn, Randy Brecker, Nicholas Payton, Kurt Elling, Eric Alexander, Phil Woods, Jon Faddis, Roscoe Mitchell, Von Freeman, Wilbur Campbell, Eddie Harris, and Les McCann. In addition, he has collaborated with guitarists Kenny Burrell, Joe Pass, and Tal Farlow, as well trumpeters Donald Byrd, Harry "Sweets" Edison, and Tom Harrell, among others. Larry continues to tour extensively, performing at jazz festivals and clubs around the globe, including the Umbria Jazz Festival, the Havana Jazz Festival, Rio Sao Paulo Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, the Montreal International Jazz Festival, ECM Festival in Bielsko-Biala, Poland, the Poznan Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, the Montreaux Detroit Festival, the Chicago Jazz Festival, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Hollywood Bowl, Village Vanguard, Blue Note (New York and Tokyo), Kennedy Center, and the Ravinia Festival, with such jazz luminaries as Marian McPartland, Clark Terry, Nancy Wilson, Frank Morgan, James Moody, Larry Coryell, Louis Bellson, Barry Harris, Dorothy Donegan, Monty Alexander, Frank Wess, Joe Williams, Doc Severinsen and the Tonight Show Band, Kenny Drew Jr., and most recently, Ramsey Lewis. As a classical musician, Larry played several seasons with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, including a year as principal bass. He worked on many occasions with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under master conductors Erich Leinsdorf, Rafeal Kubelik, Carlo Maria Guilini, and Sir George Solti. He also was the featured double bassist with Lyric Opera for the world premiere of the opera Amistad. Larry is an arranger and composer whose work has been widely recognized as uniquely melodic and exceptionally refined. His discography includes 1,2, 3,..., on Chicago Sessions, the solo bass record, Gravity, One Look, and Solo + Quartet, all on Graywater Records, as well as the Ramsey Lewis and Nancy Wilson collaborations Meant to Be and Simple Pleasures. He can also be heard on the Ramsey Lewis recordings Appassionata, Time Flies, and With One Voice, and the latest release, Songs From the Heart. Larry also arranged and produced the critically acclaimed CD, Django by Ferro. Furthermore, Larry has recorded with Chet Baker, Curtis Fuller, Ira Sullivan, Lin Halliday, Willie Pickens, Nicholas Payton, Randy Brecker, Bunky Green, Bob Moses, Irish flute-whistle virtuoso Laurence Nugent, pop sensations Linda Eder, Dennis DeYoung, and Peter Cetera, and songwriter Michael Smith, among others. In addition, Larry is a first-call studio musician, and his playing can be heard on many commercial radio and television jingles and studio projects as well as the PBS television series, Legends of Jazz, where he can be seen performing alongside Jim Hall, Benny Golson, Chris Potter, Phil Woods, David Sanborn, Chris Botti, Clark Terry, and Roy Hargrove. In addition, Larry's original composition for double bass and guitar, Five Movements, was commissioned and performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Chamber Ensemble at Symphony Center in Chicago. Most recently, Larry has composed two commissioned works for the Jazz Institute of Chicago. Tribute to the Bass Masters Suite was premiered at the Poznan Festival in Poland in 2008 to much acclaim. A second work, String Thing, was first presented in Chicago in October 2010 as part of the Jazz Institute of Chicago Jazz in Chicago series. Larry also completed a collaborative project with bassists Rufus Reid and Joseph Guastafeste that was premiered in March of 2011 in Chicago. Larry Gray is also a dedicated teacher and is Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He also served for many years on the faculties at DePaul University and Northern Illinois University. Active as a clinician at high school and colleges and festivals thought North America, he also coaches various instrumentalists in jazz techniques as well as music theory, sight-singing, and composition.
