STANDARS SEMANAL.-771.Gee,Baby,Ain´t I Good to You.-VINILOS MITICOS DEL JAZZ.-JOHN COLTRANE - Blue Train.-JAZZACTUALIDAD.-.ANA PEREIRA-BAILA LA LLUVIA Blue Train es un álbum de estudio delsaxofonista y compositor de jazz John Coltrane .

Darek Oles (Oleszkiewicz) was born on February 20, 1963 in Wroclaw, Poland. At the age of five Oles began his music education at the State Music School in Wroclaw. Piano was his first instrument, but later he played guitar, electric bass and finally at eighteen years old, he switched to accoustic bass. While in his teens he played with amateur groups, evolving in popular music styles from rock, blues, jazz-rock to straight ahead jazz. In the early 1980's, Oles participated in various jazz festivals and national competitions for young musicians. In 1983, he was the most awarded musician at the Jazz Juniors in Cracow, winning the first individual prize, first prize for jazz composition and a second prize in jazz combo category. Later that year Oles was invited by Jan Ptaszyn Wroblewski, a jazz legend in Poland, to join saxophonist's quartet on tour.In the following five years Darek Oles was working steadily with some of the best jazz bands in the country such as: Zbigniew Namyslowski Quartet, Tomasz Szukalski Quartet, Henryk Majewski Quintet, Wojciech Karolak Trio and Andrzej Jagodzinski Trio and Jan Ptaszyn Wroblewski Quartet. With those groups he recorded for Polish Jazz, Polskie Nagrania, East Wind and also for the radio and television in Poland and abroad. Darek was touring extensively in Poland, France, Germany, Czech Republic, Cuba, Mexico and performed at major festivals, concerts and jazz club venues. In 1988, Darek Oles arrived in Los Angeles with a simple plan in mind: to broaden his musical horizon. One year later he received a full scholarship from California Institute Of The Arts and began studies with the legendary bassist Charlie Haden. After graduation in 1992, he accepted a teaching position at the Institute, where he has been conducting jazz ensembles and teaching bass ever since. Since 2002 Oles has been a jazz faculty member at the University Of California in Irvine.Aside from his teaching duties, Darek Oles has been very active as a performer and became one of the most sought after bass players on the West Coast. “Oles” (his American nick-name) had the opportunity to perform and record with the greatest masters in jazz. A partial list of his collaborations include: Brad Mehldau, Billy Higgins, Pat Metheny, Joe Lovano, Eddie Henderson, Charles Lloyd, John Abercrombie, Bennie Maupin, Lee Konitz, Peter Erskine, Alan Pasqua, Bennie Wallace, Victor Lewis, Harvey Mason, Dave Grusin, Art Farmer, Horace Silver, Alice Coltrane, Ravi Coltrane, James Newton, Arthur Blythe, Lew Tabackin, Steve Kuhn, Gary Smulyan, Ronnie Cuber, Billy Hart, Kevin Hays, Munyungo Jackon, Steve Hass, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Marian McPartland, Janis Siegel, Bob Brookmeyer, Curtis Fuller, Roy McCurdy, Tom Harrell, Larry Goldings, Bill Stewart, Chris Potter, Kei Akagi, Billy Childs, Bob Sheppard, Joe LaBarbera, Bill Cunliffe, Patrice Rushen, Bennie Golson, Piotr Baron, Teri Lynn Carrington, Buddy De Franco, Terry Gibbs, Anthony Wilson Nonet and Los Angeles Jazz Quartet.Moods in Freedom on SpotifySupport the showInstagram / Twitter / Youtube / Website / BSA / View More Episodes

Tonight's Jazz Feature focuses on the obscure but fine trumpeter and flugelhornist named Wilbur Harden. Little is known about Harden other than he was born in Birmingham, Alabama on Dec. 31,1924 and after working in some major R&B bands moved to Detroit in 1957 and began working with Yusef Lateef.. He became part of the talented Detroit Jazz scene then ventured to New York to record as he signed with Savoy Records. His 4 albums for Savoy were done in 1958 and he also recorded with John Coltrane as well in 1958 and later with trombonist Curtis Fuller. After 1960 nothing more was heard from Wilbur and ill health and a nervous breakdown forced him to stop playing. He died in obscurity in New York on June 10,1969 at age 44. This fine recording called "Mainstream 1958" is an excellent one and features Wilbur and his compositions. It is a solid date with Harden and John Coltrane, at an early peak, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Doug Watkins on bass and Louis Hayes on drums. If there is a masterpiece in Harden's short discography this album may qualify. Enjoy the sounds of Wilbur Harden, John Coltrane and company on tonight's Jazz Feature.
Tonight's Jazz Feature is one of the most intense and incendiary recordings by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. It was done in February 1964. The fire and intensity was perhaps driven by the fact that several of the members of this long standing edition of the Messengers were hinting at leaving to move on to other bands or forming their own groups. The personnel of this band had been together since the end of 1961 and consisted of Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone and was also the band's musical director, Cedar Walton on piano, Reginald Workman on bass (the only living member) and of course the master fire stoker Art Blakey on drums. "Free For All" is the apt album title and the album was issued on Blue Note Records and is tonight's Jazz Feature. Listen here!!!

As broadcast March 31, 2023 with plenty of bows of respect. Over the many years of Wayne Shorter's career until his passing earlier this month, the man was simply on the cutting edge. He wasn't there all the time, but you knew if he was off in the cut biding his time the return was going to be absolutely stellar. Tonight in the first of our Deep Dive series, we pay tribute to a man who loved his jazz and loved his comic books, although which he loved more could be up for argument. Rest in power Wayne Shorter. Saxophonist Houston Person is a living legend and progenitor of the soulful sound of swinging music. After an intense and rewarding tenure with organist Johnny Hammond Smith in the early 1960's, Person made a call to Prestige Records which began his 50-plus year career as a solo recording artist. His albums over the years, which have included noted players such as Grant Green, Cedar Walton, Idris Muhammad, Curtis Fuller and Pepper Adams, have kept him in the ears of worldwide music fans. From his beginnings as leader, Person booked his own tours, hired bands, and managed his career independently, a practice that he continues to the present day. Our conversation with Person sheds light on his style on and off the bandstand; he blends decades of wisdom with charm and a direct approach to storytelling. He is the personification of soul. Our Vinyl Word segment is also dedicated to some classic moments in Person's recorded discography. Produced by Billy Robinson

This is one of the many great bands that drummer Art Blakey led. In honor of his centenary: Blakey was born in Pittsburg Pennsylvania on October 11,1919 so tonight we pay tribute to his Birthday Anniversary, This particular edition lasted from 1961 through to mid 1964 with the same personnel and they achieved a greatness few other groups possessed. This album called "Free For All" was recorded near the end to this band's existence and remains one of it's most intense and valued recordings. It is a good representation of how the band could sound in person on a good night. The music was captured in the recording studio the the energy is palpable. Only four tunes grace this album: two by Wayne Shorter, one by Freddie Hubbard and one by Clare Fischer. The band's personnel is Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone (he was also the band's musical director), Cedar Walton on piano, Reginald Workman on bass and of course Mr. Blakey on drums. The Jazz Messengers!
