Send us a textAll bands need a name, but the process of getting that name is different for each band. This episode, we look at how a bunch of well-known bands got their names.  Some are amusing, some are horrifying, some are dark or seedy – be ready for surprises! Our “album you must listen to before you die” is Arc of a Diver, by Stevie Winwood (1980).  This was a formative album during our youth, and with this million-selling album and its hit single “While You See a Chance”, Winwood was a major influence on other people we love, such as Marianne Faithfull.   In Rock News, the major story is that the Gallagher brothers have agreed to reunite as Oasis for a UK tour in 2025. We don't like the odds of the brothers completing the tour without fighting and would like ringside seats! In other news, we look at Nick Cave's new album, Wild God, Bruce Springsteen back on tour, and Neil Young releasing Archives Vol. III, a 17-CD box set featuring 198 tracks.  Wow! References: Oasis, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, INXS, Guns n Roses, Bee Gees, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Fleetwood Mac, Joy Division, Nazi camps, 10CC, The Lovin' Spoonful, Steely Dan, The Mothers of Invention, Frank Zappa, The Doobie Brothers, Rammstein, Ramstein air show tragedy, Husker Du, The Velvet Underground, Depeche Mode, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler, Boris Karloff, The Foo Fighters, The Angels, The Beatles, The Quarrymen, The Silver Beetles, Tony Sheridan & the Beat Brothers, Buddy Holly & The Crickets, Pink Floyd, Pink Anderson & Floyd Council, “Oh by the way, which one's Pink?”, Cheap Trick, Slade, ZZ Top, The Rolling Stones, Radiohead, Talking Heads, Shakespeare's Sister, The Bay City Rollers, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Tim Staffell, “Smile”, Freddie Mercury, The Band, The Hawks, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Barenaked Ladies, Jethro Tull, U2, The Hype, Beach Boys, The Pendeltons, "Surfin'", Blue Öyster Cult, “On Your Feet or on Your Knees”  Playlist – Band names

Linedy Genao - After receiving her bachelor's degree in Business Administration at the University of Connecticut, she began a career in banking. However, after receiving a message encouraging her to audition for the first open call of Gloria & Emilio Estefan's On Your Feet, her life changed forever. With only high school theater experience, Linedy landed her first Broadway-bound show, On Your Feet, and hasn't stopped since! Linedy has continued to rise through the ranks, most recently as the Alana/Zoe understudy on Dear Evan Hansen prior to its Broadway closing and on its first national tour. She was also recently named in Variety's “10 Broadway Stars to Watch” list. Born to immigrant parents, his first taste of the stage was seeing Jennifer Lopez star in the hit movie Selena, and through the incredible power of representation, a flame was lit. Kris' greatest hope is that anyone that comes to a performance of theirs leaves with a greater sense of empathy for themselves, their community, and most importantly those who've lived experience is different. SUEÑOS tells the untold story of three generations of a Mexican-American family and their pursuit of the American Dream. The story primarily focuses on the viewpoint of protagonist, Ali Viramontes,  and his journey to becoming a world renown composer. Juilliard is his one-way ticket and he won't let anything stop him, even if he has to sacrifice those close to him. Obstacles become too challenging to overcome and seems there's no other way, but to continue the cycle that tore down his family's dreams. This original, contemporary musical celebrates Latiné/Latinx people and cultures, and weaves their stories into the fabric of the American Musical Theatre.

This is the fourth episode of a special 4-part takeover with cast & creatives from Hulu's new musical series UP HERE. Make sure to stream the entire 21 song UP HERE soundtrack everywhere you find your music. Andréa Burns is currently in the original musical comedy series, "Up Here" playing Rosie, a strong and supportive “Latin Jewish” mother. The actress lets us in on how she ended up in the show and talks about her childhood friendship with fellow actress, Katie Finneran. Being raised in movie musicals, she was always amazed at how you could use your singing voice to tell a story and describes musical theatre as one of the ultimate forms of expression. She speaks candidly about playing a homemade collection of Billy Porter's recordings in the delivery room as she was giving birth, the thrills of moving into New York to meet people and create something, and performing for the sake of performing, regardless of how a show is going to turn out. Andréa also talks about her latest role in "Up Here" and how she found familiarity with the character, Rosie. With the surge of musicals on tv and film, she reflects on its positive outcome, including reaching a wider, global audience to tell real human stories and make an emotional connection. Andréa Burns is an actress who's won a Drama Desk Award for her creation of the role of Daniela in the Tony Award-winning musical "In The Heights". Her other Broadway credits include "On Your Feet", "The Rose Tattoo", "Beauty and the Beast", and "The Full Monty" among others. She was in the original cast of "Songs for a New World" opposite Billy Porter, and was selected by Stephen Sondheim to create the role of Celeste in his musical "Saturday Night". She can be heard on the soundtracks for the film versions of "In The Heights", "Tick, Tick... Boom!", and "Vivo". Andréa's tv and film credits include "The Electric Company", "Jessica Jones", "West Side Story", and "Blue Bloods". Currently, she can be seen as Rosie in the original musical comedy series, "Up Here", streaming on Hulu. One of my all-time favorite movies as a child was Anastasia. From the story to the soundtrack, the characters, and the costumes, it was a magical play on what happened to the youngest Romanov daughter, Anastasia. That's why, when I found out the Broadway musical was making its way down to Florida, I jumped at the chance to see it. The musical was playing at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, Florida. Ruth Eckerd Hall is a performing arts hall including all sorts of events, from Broadway musicals like Anastasia to comedy shows and concerts for adults and children. With a bar in the front, VIP rooms, and the England Family Musical Garden, Ruth Eckerd Hall is the perfect venue for a date night, a girl's night, or fun for the entire family. When you walk into the hall, there is a full service bar that includes liquor, wine, and local, import and craft beers. If you are hungry, you can grab pizza, a hot dog, popcorn, soft pretzels, candy, chips, a soda, and water at the many concession stands around the hall. The hall even includes Pre-show Party Packages for $29 per person and a Breakfast Brunch Buffet for $25 a person. The staff was so friendly, and one kind lady even spent her evening taking pictures of guests by the spectacular white Christmas tree. Even parking was easy, and there was not too great of a hassle to get out after the show. Some upcoming must-see shows are The Blue Man Group (February 2 -3), Sarah McLachlan (February 26), Riverdance VIP Add-On (January 17 - January 19), Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit (January 20), John Mellencamp (February 13 - February 15), Dancing With The Stars: Live! The Brainy Business | Understanding the Psychology of Why People Buy | Behavioral Economics

You've heard him before discussing the “Science of Cool” in 2021, and I'm thrilled to say that Dr. Troy Campbell is back. And, because it's fun to keep things interesting, Troy and I are flipping the script in today's episode.  What does that mean? Troy is here to showcase his Define & Apply Framework, something he does with clients in his role as Chief Scientist at On Your Feet and has done in the past with his work -- including spots he has held with Disney, Netflix, Nike, and as a professor at the University of Oregon. Instead of just telling us about it, though, we are going to walk through and experience it and, he suggested that he be the one doing the interviewing with me as the one answering the questions today. This is the third time we have flipped the script like this on The Brainy Business podcast. You definitely don't want to miss handing over the reins so we can all learn to define and apply together. Show Notes: [00:42] In today's conversation, I am joined by Dr. Troy Campbell, who was on the show back in 2021 talking about the science of cool. [02:25] Troy is taking over the reins as host, and our beloved Melina is the guest on the show today.  [02:44] On this episode, we are going to deeply define ideas to be able to powerfully apply them across many areas. We will deeply define one idea from Melina's book What Your Employees Need and Can't Tell You.  [04:07] Burnt popcorn is the aspect of priming when we are specifically talking about change management.  [07:03] Melina shares an example of a burnt popcorn email she received.   [09:52] It is so easy to create burnt popcorn. Burnt popcorn can poison the day (week, month, year…). [12:07] You can guarantee they are going to be looking at the worst possible context of whatever it is that you are saying if you prime and set it up in certain ways. (“Not to be rude, but…” “Don't take this the wrong way, but…”) [13:16] These mundane actions can create hours, days, and weeks of stress that can be avoided with a few seconds of better thought.  [14:33] There are small things you can easily adjust and very quickly see a positive impact.  [16:52] When it comes to a presentation, consider where you want people to be at the end. What is the most important thing you want from this one event? [19:07] Using really good images is important for priming in presentations.  [21:03] You can tell a lot in 90 seconds.   [24:13] Anchoring on something really bad to make the thing you are sharing seem better can definitely be burnt popcorn. The “not true” thing you said will not dissipate.  [26:28] If you give the brain a focus and then try to change that focus, it is still going to be stuck on that thing in most situations.  [29:45] Take the time to do the research and know who you are talking to. [31:44] We do really weird stuff that can come off as burnt popcorn.  [34:42] Through the book writing process there are glimmers of fun that Melina and other authors like to include.  [37:39] When you are not great with humor, many people lean toward self-deprecating humor.  Melina advises against that…especially if you are trying to build authority.  [39:14] She shares the Wizard of Oz reference from her book and what she meant by, “Glinda may have been a good witch, but she was a terrible manager.”  [41:29] Knowing where people are, where they are going, and the right points where you can be giving those nudges of encouragement, feedback, or support before they entered into a scary forest is something you can be doing as a manager to help.   [43:57] So many things become easier when you are thoughtful about how you present information.  [46:11] It doesn't take a lot to make it so that things are better for those around you and yourself.  [48:57] It is one thing to go to Disneyland and it is another thing to build Disneyland.  [49:56] Melina's closing thoughts [51:45] Troy's define and apply process is about teasing out what you do in a particular area and figuring out why it works. Get to the details about what makes it special and then expand it into other areas that may seem unrelated but are so relevant when you stop and make the effort. Thanks for listening. Continuing our celebration of the 20th Anniversary of HAIRSPRAY – The Musical, my guest this week is the show's original choreographer JERRY MITCHELL who shares with us a first-hand, behind-the-scenes look into the creation of that Tony Award winning musical -- especially in regard to the how the show's unique staging, choreography, design, as well as many of its most memorable moments were first dreamed up and executed!  You will also get an inside view of Jerry's close collaborations with Hairspray's director, Jack O'Brian, lead producer Margo Lion, set designer David Rockwell, and Tony Award winning songwriters Marc Shaiman & Scott Wittman. You will also have the opportunity to hear excerpts from the show original "demo recording" featuring vocals by Annie Golden and Jenifer Lewis!  20 years ago I had the great privilege of being part of the birth of Hairspray – The Musical because at that time I served as the Producing Artistic Director of Seattle's 5th Avenue Theater where the show received its World Premiere.    This is my 3rd episode celebrating HAIRSPRAY's 20th. Last week I had the great pleasure of having Marc & Scott as my guests, and a few weeks ago, on Episode 71, my guest was one of the show's original producer's, Adam Epstein, who is now the host of his own podcast called Dirty Moderate. Please feel free to listen to these episodes on any order as each of my guests brings their own specific memories and perspectives to the celebration. “You have to choose yourself and other people will choose you.” – Robbie Rozelle on what he learned from the late Jan Maxwell.  There's a lot of musical theatre references in this episode, folks. Proceed with caution!  Robbie Rozelle is a beloved performer, director, writer, graphic designer, and record producer who is responsible for some of the funniest and touching moments in the cabaret space of recent. Rozelle does shows all over the city… even across the pond in London. So how does he dominate the cabaret and concert scene?  “For me, I am very much a self starter. If I want to do something, I sort of will it into existence. A lot of that is a lot of cold emails. There are so many cold emails that I'll send out, 'Hi, I am beloved, fully ignored, cabaret sensation, Robbie Rozelle.' I'll send the album and I'll say, here's the pitch. 9 times out of 10, I'll never get an email back.” But don't worry, Robbie's concerts sell out in 26 minutes. That isn't an exaggeration. How does he do it? How does he sell his shows? If you're interested in producing your own cabaret and concert, this episode is loaded with goodies to help you. We also chat about social media helping or hindering the industry, pushing through performances even during a crumbling political environment, understanding that what we bring to the table in the industry is allowed to be specific, and the difference between a Renaissance person and the multi-hyphenate.  Robbie infiltrates the industry in such an interesting way, He has also directed and written or co-written sold-out cabaret shows for Tony Award nominee Melissa Errico (Amour), Tony nominee Kate Baldwin (Finian's Rainbow), Elena Shaddow (The Visit), Nikka Graff Lanzarone (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown), Mauricio Martínez (On Your Feet), Nathan Salstone (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), RuPaul's Drag Race contestant Mrs. Kasha Davis, and frequent collaborator Jessica Vosk (15th Anniversary Elphaba in Wicked). In 2017, he sold out Feinstein's/54 Below twice with his debut cabaret solo act, "Songs From Inside My Locker", which was nominated for a BroadwayWorld Cabaret Award (in addition to nominations for Best Director). He returned to Feinstein's/54 Below in 2018 to headline Pride weekend with his new show "Bustin' Out", selling out and earning rave reviews. He recorded his debut solo album of “Songs From Inside My Locker” live in front of two sold-out audiences in 2019; the album was released to rave reviews in June 2020. He also created and hosted “Tuesdays at 54… with Robbie Rozelle!,” which ran for seven months at Feinstein's/54 Below in 2019-2020. Robbie is a Grammy voting member, and appears on the concert cast recording of Mia Moravis' Session Girls. For three years, Robbie served as the graphic designer and creative director for Playbill, culminating in the design of the branding of #PlaybillPride, a 30-day initiative of the LGBT movement in the theatre that included a redesign of their historic logo for the month of June 2014, which continues each June to this day. He currently serves as the A&R Director and in-house designer for Grammy-winning record label Broadway Records, where he designed the iconic "What the World Needs Now is Love" in response to Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando. He also runs Ghostlight Design. When not designing, he can usually be found tweeting jokes and random musings at @divarobbie. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

“You don't know the impact you could have in the world just by waking up today.”Gary Hirsch is on the podcast today to remind us of the little ways we can make a huge impact in the world — just by being ourselves — and how approaching life with an improv mindset can transform your life in countless ways.As a global joy artist, Gary has dedicated much of his career and life to using art to help us feel more human, while bringing more joy and less fear into the world. As a child, Gary's father helped him to release the monsters that visited him at night – by putting a pencil in his hand and encouraging Gary to get the monsters out of his head and onto paper. His father's mantra, "If you can make it, you can make it go away" inspired him to develop Botjoy, a global art movement designed to spread joy, courage, love, and gratitude.I personally get to enjoy seeing Gary's bot art all over Portland, and because it's adorned with phrases like "What inspires you?" and "What brings you joy?" – you know he's a guest you're going to adore as much as I do.In this episode, you'll learn:How to use Gary's idea of "Let go. Notice more. Use everything." to transform your day-to-day life in very practical ways.Takeaway questions to consider for yourself:How can I have more of an improv mindset? How can I let go, notice more, and use everything in situations in my life? What is one thought I'm currently making in my head that I could also make go away? ABOUT GARY & THE BOTSGary is also a renowned visual artist, muralist, and the creator of Botjoy, an exploration of how art can be surprising, delightful, and helpful. Botjoy has evolved into a global art movement designed to spread joy, courage, love, and gratitude, one hand-painted robot at a time. Thousands of domino robots have been painted by Gary and others who have taken up his invitation to "steal his idea." You can find bots left randomly on streets all around the world as a gift for strangers to find, in children's hospital to help young patients feel braver, and in classes rooms and studios all over the world as other's make bots for their community. Gary's public art commissions can be found in Dallas, New Orleans, Phoenix, Madrid, London, Melbourne (Australia), and in his hometown of Portland, Oregon.Gary is also the co-founder at On Your Feet a collision of business, art, and science that harnesses the power of experience and interactive learning to transform organizational culture and behavior.
