Send us a textDisney's Out of My Mind will be released on Disney+ tomorrow, and I had the opportunity to interview the director, Amber Sealey, on today's podcast. The film is about a sixth grader, Melody Brooks, who has cerebral palsy, is nonverbal, and uses a wheelchair. As Melody navigates the ups and downs of being in the classroom, she eventually shows that what she has to say is more important than how she says it.Amber Sealey is an award-winning filmmaker whose most recent film, Out of My Mind (Disney/ Participant/Big Beach), premiered at Sundance 2024 to multiple standing ovations. Based on the best-selling YA novel of the same name, it stars Rosemarie DeWitt, Luke Kirby, and Judith Light, with Jennifer Aniston voicing the lead's inner life.Projects she has in development include two of her original scripts — the comedy feature COMING OF AGE and the romantic comedy BODICE RIPPER. Her feature NO MAN OF GOD (SpectreVision/Company X/XYZ Films/RLJ Entertainment), starring Elijah Wood and Luke Kirby, was theatrically released in 2021 to rave reviews. She has been supported by Sundance, Film Independent, and Women in Film. She is a fellow of the AFI Directing Workshop for Women and has written scripts for Duplass Brothers/Donut Productions. She was selected for Ryan Murphy's Half Initiative, the NBCUniversal Directors Initiative, the WeForShe DirectHer program, Film Independent's Directing Lab, and their Fast Track program. Her short film, HOW DOES IT START, world premiered at Sundance and (among other awards) won Best Narrative Short at Sarasota FF, and is being turned into a feature film. Her second feature, HOW TO CHEAT, won Best Performance at LAFF, and won both Best Narrative and Best Acting at BendFilm. Her first film, A PLUS D, was released by IndiePix.Sealey has a BA in Theatre Arts and Modern Dance from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and an MA from The Central School of Speech and Drama in London. Chris Rock jokes about Kevin Hart's best acting in "Kevin Hart: The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize For Humor" only on Netfilx.
“I teach people to be themselves,” says legendary acting coach Howard Fine, founder of Howard Fine Acting Studio and author of the newly revised “Fine on Acting: A Vision of the Craft.” Howard joins the Dance Dad podcast to discuss how acting puts us in touch with who we really are and, when we approach it with pure intentions and do the necessary work, can set us free. On today's episode, he'll discuss what it takes to be a great teacher and why many fail and give the rest a bad reputation. He'll discuss the two techniques that divide the acting community, and how to be a supportive parent versus a stage mom. Howard recalls his appearance on Dance Moms and what his session with Chloe Lucasiak taught him about the importance of authenticity. In an industry that is changing to become more inclusive and diverse, being oneself is more important than ever. He also shares the stunning story of his family's escape from Poland during the Holocaust, their time spent living in Shanghai and his early days as an artistic, intellectual kid in a family of athletes. He'll share why athletes–including dancers– often make the best actors. Join today's discussion to learn what it was like helping Austin Butler, Golden Globe winner, prepare to play Elvis, the tradition Diana Ross started that Howard's students still practice today, and how our inspirations and aspirations change over time. Quotes “One more crazy, eccentric, neurotic, acting coach—that's not the profession. It really makes the profession seem silly, and it's not. Teaching, first of all, is a calling, and the teaching of the craft of acting is a privilege to me.” (7:19 | Howard Fine) “If someone cannot get past their own ego to help someone else—and you get this with actors who sometimes failed at that career, and then are not teaching because they're called to teach, they're teaching because they're trying to make money to survive—they want to get up and demonstrate for the actor rather than encourage the actors instincts, and sometimes are jealous of the actor, jealous of the artist, and that comes out in the critiques.” (12:04 | Howard Fine) “We as human beings are the sum total of our experiences, and so we all have experiences in our lives to draw from. And that's powerful. It's the one reason—since we've been talking about age—in athletics, an athlete is old by 30. However, in what we do, you have the potential to get better and better with time. Akin to a fine wine, we get to improve with age because real experience deepens us, life deepens us.” (16:41 | Howard Fine) “That's one of the hardest things about acting is there's no separation. You're not turning in the book report and somebody's commenting on that, they're looking at you and they're looking at everything that is you. That's why actors have to develop themselves on so many levels—intellectually, physically, all forms of dance, yoga, martial arts, the Alexander technique.” (20:50 | Howard Fine) “Athletes tend to do very well with me—and I consider dancers athletes—because athletes will stick to something when it's hard. Athletes will practice, they have work ethic. If you're a lazy dancer, you can't get very far. You have to have a work ethic. And so, all of those things are absolutely pertinent to acting.” (40:18 | Howard Fine) “I ask students to see me as a colleague who is there to help them improve their work, not as a guru they're trying to impress.” (50:26 | Howard Fine) Links Connect with Howard Fine: howardfine.com www.instagram.com/howardfinestudio Dance Dad with John Corella on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dancedadwithjohncorella/ John on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/john_corella/ Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Actor-director Michelle Danner is also an acting coach at the Los Angeles Acting School who specializes in the Meisner, Strasberg, Adler, Hagen, Chekhov and Stanislavsky techniques. Alongside Larry Moss, she's also the founding and Artistic Director of the Edgemar Center for the Arts.In 2006, Michelle made her feature film directing debut with, How to Go Out on a Date in Queens, winning the L.A. Film Awards' Best Acting and Best Movie awards. Her 2013 film, HelloHerman, catalogs the effect that peer abuse, parental neglect and the general coarsening of society has on a typical high school student. Michelle has acted in and directed over thirty plays in Los Angeles and New York, with her favorite acting credit cited as the Dramalogue award-winning Tennessee Williams' The Rose Tattoo. Among her other award-winning stage work, she produced The Night of the Black Cat at Edgemar, she directed the world premiere of Mental the Musical, and she wrote and directed You're on the Air, an improvisation-based comedy.Michelle also produced and acted in the award-winning short Dos Corazones, directed by Larry Moss. And she was voted favorite acting coach by the readers of Backstage. Notable projects Michelle has directed include: Bad Impulse with Paul Sorvino, Ticket to the Circus, a one-woman play about the life of Norris Church Mailer, starring Anne Archer. And most recently she produced and directed the feature, Miranda's Victim, a biographical crime drama depicting the origins of the well-known Miranda warning. The movie stars Abigail Breslin, Luke Wilson, Andy Garcia, Donald Sutherland, Ryan Phillippe, Kyle MacLachlan, Mireille Enos, Taryn Manning, and Emily VanCamp. I've seen Miranda's Victim and can tell you it's an intense and deeply emotional story about how the legal system can be impacted and changed by overcoming injustice amid challenging circumstances. www.michelledanner.comwww.edgemarcenter.org
Lisa woke up this morning realizing she is WAY behind on her Oscar nomination watching! Like, she has only seen “Barbie”. So to psych herself up to watch all the rest of these performances for all the Best Acting awards at least, Lisa sits down with Oscar savant Paul Sullivan, who has seen EVERY best picture nominee since 1943, to discuss the task she has ahead of her. Paul gives Lisa a little preview on what he thinks of all the films this year, and weighs in on all the performances (and he may or may not do a few impressions)…Paul also takes us down the rabbit hole of past Academy Award winners and compares them to this year's hopefuls . (btw, humble brag, Lisa cast nominee Colman Domingo in a film years ago, so she is already rooting for him without seeing him in “Rustin” yet, is that wrong?). Will Lisa be able to set aside her existential angst about these award shows in general before the big ceremony? Tune in to our pre-game chat to find out. (Note, yes, you will hear the moment that their dog Eleanor knocks over a big flower pot in the yard and gets a snootful of mud, we didn't have the energy to edit that out).

Ladies and gentlemen, this is a really good one and I've been so excited to share it with you. My next guest is an actor I consider one of the greatest of our generation. He's worked with everyone from Del Toro to Malick, Tarantino to Soderbergh. He's an extraordinary actor who loses himself in the life of his film and television characters. Ever evolving, he's a true chameleon and shapeshifter, presenting us with a new and intriguing character. This is Clifton Collins. Jr. Clifton Collins Jr. has acting in his blood. His grandfather, Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez, became an American icon, starring alongside John Wayne and Mel Blanc throughout his career. Clifton burst onto the scene in 1997, but it was his portrayal of Frankie Flowers in Traffic that forever cemented his status as an actor to be taken seriously. Since then he's stolen the screen in films like Capote and Sunshine Cleaning. Clifton's latest film Jockey is yet another work of art, with his titular performance earning him the Sundance Film Festival U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Best Acting.Jockey tells the story of an aging jockey competing to win one last title for his longtime trainer, who has acquired what appears to be a championship horse. But the years – and injuries – have taken a toll on his body, throwing into question his ability to continue his lifelong passion. And the arrival of a young rookie rider, who claims to be his son, and whom he takes under his wing, further complicates the path to fulfilling his dream. The Smith Society is an interview series focused on storytellers. It's an intimate look at artists -- who they are, how they got from A to B, a detailed look at what makes them tick and advice to those pursuing a career in telling stories, as well as some insight into the industry, pitching projects, and, of course, how we can make the world a better place. The Smith Society Podcast: This is the Smith Society, a podcast about storytellers and storytelling. Isn't a showreel just a compilation of your best bits from your acting parts to date? No - at least, not according to a leading figure in the film and television showreel industry.Daniel Johnson is a writer and director from London who has made a name for himself by creating high quality showreel scenes for actors from scratch. In this lengthy and in-depth chat with actor and presenter Aiysha Jebali, Johnson explains why it's more important to choose one great scene for your showreel over five scenes from bigger parts that do not reflect your abilities as an actor. He also discusses the top mistakes actors make when it comes to putting together showreels and how to avoid them - and much, much more!Daniel has also written and directed short films including A Productive Lockdown - work which caught our attention here at Film Forums and led to this very enjoyable interview. From our Booth One perspective in the 11th row at the PrivateBank Theatre, this sit-down company is hands down as dynamic, entertaining and exciting as the Broadway show we saw in New York in May. It's not just a traveling road company - the show's creators have put together a virtual replica of the Broadway smash and re-produced one of the great theatrical experiences of a lifetime. Yes, ticket prices are steep and seats are hard to come by, but it's worth every penny and effort to get into this show. Take the time to play the lottery. 'Nuf said.... Our first year-end list is President Obama's final Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients: Alphabetically, they are Kareem Abdul-Jabaar, Ellen DeGeneres, Robert DeNiro, Bill and Melinda Gates, Frank Gehry, Tom Hanks, Michael Jordan, Maya Lin, Lorne Michaels, Newton Minow, Robert Redford, Diana Ross, Vin Scully, Bruce Springsteen, and Cicely Tyson. A special note is made about Newt Minow, close friend of our producer and a Chicago native, who famously referred to television as a "vast wasteland". Audra McDonald's pregnancy was a surprise. But was it an accident, an illness or neither? We discuss the lawsuit brought by the producers of the marvelous Shuffle Along, Or the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed against Lloyds of London, claiming damages of more than $12 million. Ms. McDonald's absence from the show for maternity leave prompted not only the show's early closing, but earlier health issues forced her to miss some preview performances. Ms. McDonald, who has won six Tony awards, was the show's biggest star. Lloyd's has denied the claims, arguing that the pregnancy "and the associated medical conditions were neither an 'accident' nor an 'illness'," criteria cited in the original $14 million insurance policy. Stand by for more on this unprecedented story... Pray. Eat raw eggs. Stay single. Those are the keys to a long life, according to Emma Morano, the world's oldest person. Emma celebrated her 117th birthday this week, and is a national treasure in her native Italy, where her birthday celebration was broadcast on live state television. After the party, Morano took a well-deserved nap. God Bless, Emma. Our next list is of Golden Globe Award nominees, as Gary puts Roscoe in the hot seat for predicting the winners of the January 8 ceremony. His picks: Manchester By the Sea and La La Land for Best Motion Pictures; Denzel, Natalie Portman, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in the Best Acting categories. Continuing our movie musical theme, Gary tells about a new Marc Platt project based on the book "Everything's Coming Up Profits: The Golden Age of Industrial Musicals".The source book focuses on corporate musicals made by the hundreds from the 1950s to the early 1980s by companies like Coca-Cola, Westinghouse and Chevrolet. Mostly played at business meetings and conventions, they were created by the top writing talent of the day, including Kander and Ebb. This original movie musical, featuring Kristen Wiig and Will Farrell, will have a score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Whitman of Harispray and Smash fame. Back to our lists - the Library of Congress as announced 25 new films added to the National Film Registry, recognized in the National Film Preservation Board's view as "culturally, historically and aesthetically significant." The list includes: Ball of Fire (1941) The Birds (1963) Blackboard Jungle (1955) The Breakfast Club (1985) East of Eden (1955) Funny Girl (1968) The Lion King (1994) Lost Horizon (1937) The Princess Bride (1987) Steamboat Bill, Jr. (1928) Thelma & Louise (1991) 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1916) Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) A clarification from our previous episode regarding the...
