Michelle Coltrane and Maggie LePique discuss her Mother, Alice Coltrane and the year-long celebration currently underway that's being called “The Year of Alice.”This celebration spans 2024-2025 and features previously unreleased music and reissues, brand new community programming, a multimedia museum exhibit, specially curated concerts, newly choreographed ballet works and much more.Jazz musician, composer, bandleader and spiritual and devotional leader, Alice Coltrane was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1937 to Solon and Annie McLeod, the fifth of six children. By the age of nine, she played organ during services at Mount Olive Baptist church. In the early 60's she began playing jazz as a professional in Detroit with her own trio and as a duo with vibist Terry Pollard.Alice Coltrane would go on to collaborate and performed with Kenny Clarke, Kenny Burrell, Ornette Coleman, Pharaoh Sanders, Charlie Haden, Roy Haynes, Jack DeJonette, Carlos Santana and more.Mrs Coltrane's interest in gospel, classical, and jazz music led to the creation of her own innovative style. Her proficiency on keyboard, organ, and harp was remarkable and her artistry matured into amazing arrangements and compositions. Her twenty recordings cover a time span from Monastic Trio (1968) to Translinear Light (2004).Michelle discusses at length one of the events here in Southern California that is part of the Year of Alice. Here in L.A. the exhibition Alice Coltrane, Monument Eternal at the Hammer Museum in Westwood is inspired by the life and legacy of jazz musician, composer and bandleader as well a spiritual and devotional leader, Alice Coltrane. This exhibition is part of a larger initiative called “The Year of Alice," and in partnership with the John & Alice Coltrane Home, Impulse Records, The New York Historical Society, the Detroit Jazz Festival and more. The exhibition presents works by contemporary American artists paired with items Coltrane's personal archive and features a range of mediums including video, performance, and sculpture together with Coltrane's archival hand-written correspondence, unreleased audio recordings, and rarely seen video footage.Upcoming event with Michelle Coltrane:Sai Anantam Devotional EnsemblePresented by CAP UCLA and Hammer MuseumSun, Apr 13, 2025 at 6:30pm The NimoyThe Year of Alice events include:Reissues of Alice Coltrane's albums and previously unreleased musicSpecially curated concerts in cities including New York, Brooklyn, Detroit, and CaliforniaA multimedia museum exhibitNewly choreographed dance worksCommunity programming and an Oral History ProjectDiscussions about Coltrane's life and workPartners in the celebration are:Impulse! She has crafted a sound-world of her own that marries her love of history, jazz vocalists, Black folk traditions and hip-hop producers. As a teenager, Black attended Detroit School of Arts High School where she studied classical and jazz music as a Vocal major. In 2014, Black placed runner-up in the Detroit Jazz Festival's Youth Jazz Vocal Competition. She later enrolled in Spelman College's music program, focusing on classical vocal performance and modern composition, becoming the first student of the program to perform a senior recital of original non-classical compositions. In 2023, Black was selected to perform at NPR's Tiny Desk on the Road Tour stop in Atlanta and has also performed as an opening act for MAJOR., Anthony Hamilton, Chrisette Michele, Elle Varner, and Maze featuring Frankie Beverly.Black's latest work, "Walk in the Rain," is the second of a trilogy that centers the story of Blues singer Gladys Bentley as told in the 1952 article "I Am a Woman Again". Displaying Black's passion for archival research and amplifying the voices of Black music elders, this project bridges the gaps of Bentley's small archive to create a more complete, imaginative story of her life. This explores Bentley's life-long desire to belong and be loved, the elements of life that brought her joy and the fluid nature of her gender expression and sexuality.Listen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Pocket Casts and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa. At the helm of The Parade Company since 2009, Tony Michaels is President & CEO of the iconic Detroit non-profit organization and served on its Board of Directors for over a decade. He leads some of Detroit's most storied traditions, including the near century-old America's Thanksgiving Parade presented by Gardner White and the world-class Ford Fireworks, which have both delighted generations of families and resulted in significant economic impact for the region. He has led major growth of The Parade Company with bringing on Gardner White as presenting sponsor of the parade through 2031, one of the oldest in the nation, and attracting top partners and sponsors of Michigan and global companies. He has expanded the broadcast to 185 television markets in the U.S., and under his leadership, the parade is recognized as the Best Holiday Parade in America by USA TODAY. In addition, The Parade Company produces several other Detroit jewels including the Strategic Staffing Solutions Turkey Trot and Hob Nobble Gobble presented by Ford Motor Company, among other year-round events. Tony is a distinguished Michigan business leader and has received a multitude of honors for championing initiatives. Most recently, Tony was named 2022 Michiganian of the Year by the Detroit News, received the 2022 Edward H. McNamara Goodfellow of the Year Award and the Spirit of Detroit Award from Detroit City Council. He is on the Board of Directors for the Detroit Economic Club and Henry Ford Hospital West Bloomfield, and an advisor to non-profit organizations and business and community leaders, including the Community Foundation of Greater Rochester and the Marketing Committee of the Detroit Zoo. He is of counsel to the Woodward Dream Cruise and Brand Advisor to the Detroit Jazz Festival. Previously, Tony was the CEO of Elias Brothers Restaurants from 1998 to 2000, and held that same position from 2001 to 2008 at the newly formed company, which he worked on developing called Big Boy Restaurants LLC. Tony took over Elias Brothers as the company was headed into financial trouble and successfully structured a deal that allowed for the company's assets to be purchased under new ownership. This plan resulted in the company experiencing significant growth, including preserving existing jobs and the disciplined creation of new positions that supported the local and national growth of the brand. During this time, a complete rebranding of the company also occurred. Nation's Restaurant News took notice and named Big Boy Restaurants, LLC as the exclusive winner of the “”Hot Again Concept”” award in 2007. Prior to 1998, he served as Chief Marketing Officer at the company. Tony is a graduate of Central Michigan University with a degree in Business Administration and Marketing. Maggie speaks with Grammy-winning author Ashley Kahn about his latest book, "George Harrison on George Harrison" a collection of interviews and TV appearances Harrison gave during his too-short life. Kahn's collection “covers [Harrison's] biographical sweep as fully as an autobiography would,” the preface asserts, and though one might argue with that, by book's end, we believe Kahn's exhortation: “Read his words, and know the man.”Ashley has received widespread critical acclaim for A Love Supreme: The Making of John Coltrane's Signature Album and Kind of Blue: The Making of the Miles Davis Masterpiece. His other books include The House That Trane Built and, as cowriter, The Universal Tone, Carlos Santana's autobiography. He teaches at New York University, and his articles have appeared in the New York Times, Rolling Stone, and other publications.Ashley Kahn is an author, educator, music journalist, and concert producer. A professor of music history and criticism at NYU who lectures at other institutions as well, his books include the A Love Supreme: The Story of John Coltrane's Signature Album, Kind of Blue: The Making of the Miles Davis Masterpiece. Kahn's writing has generated two Grammy nominations, three ASCAP/Deems Taylor Awards, and two Book of the Year distinctions from the Jazz Journalists Association. Most recently, he has spoken, presented, and conducted interviews at a variety of festivals and conferences including: SXSW, CMJ, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Umbria Jazz Festival (Perugia and Orvieto), North Sea Jazz Festival (Rotterdam), the Detroit Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, Barcelona Jazz Festival, Berklee School of Music, and other universities, music conferences and festivals.Kahn's byline appears in such publications as Rolling Stone, Mojo and The Wall Street Journal and his voice is often heard on National Public Radio's “Morning Edition”. During a thirty-year career in the music business, Kahn has helped produce countless concerts, tours and festivals including a ten-year stint as tour manager for a multitude of music groups, including: Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Debbie Harry & the Jazz Passengers and Britney Spears. He continues to work very closely with the Miles Davis family on a variety of projects, including a Miles Davis museum exhibition, tribute concerts and various panels and speaking engagements.“Despite all the pressures of fame, George Harrison managed to stay grounded, and real, and to live a life in full. In George Harrison on George Harrison, Ashley Kahn has summoned up a portrait of the artist as public figure, as friend, as husband, as spiritual devotee, through a kaleidoscopic assemblage of letters, interviews, broadcast transcripts, and more. Harri-son was thoughtful, sensitive, honest, warmly funny, kind, and very, very smart. It all shines through in this beautiful collection.” —Tom Piazza, Author of Why New Orleans MattersSource: https://www.amazon.com/George-Harrison-Interviews-Encounters-Musicians/dp/1641600519Source: https://tisch.nyu.edu/about/directory/clive-davis-institute/1417614318This episode is from an archive from the KPFK program Profiles adapted for podcast. Henry Conerway iii is an outstanding musician with a unique skill set that sets him apart from most. His commitment to excellence is apparent in his debut album, aptly entitled "With Pride for Dignity". Henry and I explored the ideas of legacy, creativity, confidence and how they relate to the black american experience. His message is strong yet subtle much like the sounds of his music. Connect with Henry Here: http://www.thehc3.com/ (http://www.thehc3.com/)Bio-Henry Conerway iii has become a leading presence on the modern jazz scene since moving to New York in 2015, as evidenced by his ongoing work with such global touring artists as; the iconic Freddy Cole; the stalwart Jazz at Lincoln Center trumpeter, Marcus Printup; 2015 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocal Competition Winner, Jazzmeia Horn; Grammy nominated trumpeter, Russell Gunn; and several residencies with Jazz at Lincoln Center in Doha, Qatar. His notable performances include such esteemed venues as: The Atlanta Jazz Festival; Jacksonville Jazz Festival; Savannah Jazz Festival; National Black Arts Festival; Toronto Jazz Festival; The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts; The United Trombone Summit (Indiana University) featuring Slide Hampton, Steve Turre, Curtis Fuller and Bill Watrous; Birmingham Jazz Festival; The Gulf Coast Ethnic & Heritage Festival; performed at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, CA in A Tribute To Ray Charles; the Mount Vernon Jazz Series in Golden, CO with jazz masters Nicholas Payton and Russell Malone; and notable NYC jazz clubs as Minton's, Birdland, Smalls, Smoke; Jazz at Lincoln Center and its Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola.Conerway, a proud Detroit native, made extraordinary use of the many educational and cultural opportunities of that formidable city, performing as a high school student on The Detroit Jazz Festival stages and spending several years studying under the tutelage of the late, great trumpeter, Marcus Belgrave as a member of the Detroit Symphony's Civic Jazz Orchestra. His thirst for the jazz idiom was nurtured there by his mother, a lover of music, who made sure he experienced live performances of all types; and his father, a brilliant classical violinist, who also shared a deep and abiding love for jazz music in all its incarnations. While matriculating at Atlanta's historic and prestigious Morehouse College (B.A. in Music Composition), Henry co-founded the group, Jaspects, which quickly became a staple in that city's music scene and successfully sold thousands of their own recordings, while booking their own tours and forming creative collaborations with such luminaries as Maroon 5's P.J. Morton; Grammy nominated Janelle Monáe; Tyler Perry's Tony Hightower, and Chantae Cann; who can each be heard on Jaspects' recordings. Henry has also composed original works for film and performed in theatre settings including the Tony Award nominated Shuffle Along, or, the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed, on Broadway.
