Content Warning: This episode contains detailed discussions of generational trauma and suicide. For today's episode, I'm joined by one of my current favorite essayists and cultural critics Matt Mitchell (Paste, Pitchfork, MTV, Altpress) to discuss how identity, pop culture, and personal grief are fundamental aspects of their work. Additionally, we delve into the somber brutality of Neil Young's Tonight's The Night, our shared adoration of Freaks and Geeks, and how queer representation in popular media leaves much to be desired, specifically in the Hollywood intersex canon. ✨ MORE ABOUT MATT MITCHELL ✨ Matt Mitchell is a poet, essayist, and music journalist based in Columbus, Ohio. Mike Park (Skankin' Pickle, The Bruce Lee Band, The Chinkees, Asian Man Records) and the great newer ska band Catbite join us for a joint chat! If you're unfamiliar, Mike is a veteran and lifer of DIY, ska, punk, and indie rock, and remains prolific and consistently today, and he refers to Catbite as his favorite new ska band. The episode is in celebration of their new split 12" on Bad Time Records as part of the label's 'Wavebreaker' series, which brings together ska musicians from different generations. We talk about the new split, as well as the current ska scene, some ska history, why ska still gets a bit of a bad reputation (and why it shouldn't), the recent divisive AltPress article on The Interrupters, and much more. We've also teamed up with them on an exclusive electric blue vinyl variant of the split, limited to just 100 copies and only available in our stores. Pre-order yours now while they last! We had the pleasure of interviewing 19&YOU over Zoom video! 19&YOU recently released their self-titled debut EP. With this 7-track collection of alt-pop songs, 19&YOU delivers an expressive narrative filled with coming-of-age tales regarding ex-lovers, past celebrations, and the pursuit of self-discovery amidst the chaos and heartbreaks. 19&YOU says this of their EP:"Our debut EP '19&YOU' touches on heartbreak, transition, and longing. We started writing this EP when Noah came to visit us (Cam, Jack, and Liam), when we were studying abroad in Australia. At that time, we were all going through heartbreak and decided one night to make a song using that shared experience. That was the start of 19&YOU. We write from experience and relatability, which is why we believe our fans will be able to really connect with the tracks on the EP." The opening track, “PART OF YOU (with Carlie Hanson)”, serves as a sweeping tribute to love and the fond memories of a former life. “PART OF YOU” underlines lead singer Cameron Graves' honeyed vocals and the band's penchant for crisp arrangements and soft pop. The song is further elevated by the angelic and impactful vocals of Carlie Hanson. The band, growing their fan base with the success of each release, has been able to capture the attention of several publications, radio, and playlist features, including Zane Lowe at Beats 1, Apple Music's Pop Chill playlist, Spotify's soda playlist, MTV, CLASH, AltPress, Ones to Watch, Lyrical Lemonade, LADYGUNN, American Songwriter, The Line of Best Fit, and more. More InfoMeet 19&YOU. This is the story of boy meets girl, boy pursues girl to Sydney, and then boy unexpectedly makes new friends and creates a band instead of chasing love. Noah Taylor (executive producer) was love-struck when he followed a girl around the world. He ended up crashing at a friend's place in Australia, where he subsequently came across Cameron Graves (vocals), Jackson Leitch (guitar), and Liam Wallis (drums). An instant camaraderie took flight and the four guys started a band within days. In the following months via virtual sessions, the newly formed group completed their first batch of songs in one week. For the band, ‘19' represents an age in life between adolescence and adulthood that's full of transformative moments. Following their move to Los Angeles in June 2020, 19&YOU is gearing up for a 2021 breakthrough that begins with their debut EP.We want to hear from you! The Annabelle movie, a prequel to The Conjuring, was released in October of 2014. In the movie, the doll is porcelain and made in a child’s image, with long hair. However, in real life, she is a raggedy Anne doll and has red yarn for hair. The writers and producers couldn’t use the raggedy Anne for royalty purposes, but they also wanted to make the doll seem scarier for the viewers. According to the Warrens, the doll is possessed by an inhuman spirit. Because of this, she is locked away at The Occult Museum in Monroe, Connecticut with a warning label on the glass as well as the Lord’s Prayer and a cross. Most people have seen the movie or at least the doll, but not everyone knows the truly horrifyingly true story behind it. In any cultural movement there are leaders and there are followers. But most importantly, there are those uniquely innovative provocateurs that take the familiar, turn it upside down, and burn it with new creative fire. Like a b-boy mad scientist smashing the windows of the mainstream with a Molotov cocktail of passion and inspiration, Hyro The Hero takes the fusion of rap and rock and resurrects it. His combustible concoction is one part The Clash, one part Bad Brains, and several doses of reverence for hip-hop relevance. It’s the most punk rock rap and the most hip-hop punk. The mash-up of rock and rap was pioneered by groups like Run DMC and the Beastie Boys, then fashioned into groundbreaking socio-political firebombs by Rage Against The Machine, before it was co-opted, watered down, and worn out by a slew of no-talent copycats with nothing to say. Hyro was embraced early on by Deftones, Wu-Tang Clan, and the Vans Warped Tour alike, earning accolades in tastemaker publications like Kerrang! and airplay on BBC Radio 1, becoming the first artist to ever play three stages at Download Festival UK in the same year, and inspiring a new generation of heavy music enthusiasts and hip-hop heads in equal measure. On brand new tracks like “Bullet,” “We Ain’t Afraid,” “Never Back Down,” and “Devil in Disguise,” from the long-awaited full-length follow-up to his 2011 debut album, Hyro puts forth his true lyrical credibility and hip-hop urgency on top of aggressive, uplifting, and powerfully driven punk n’ roll. Hyro hails from the same Southern stomping grounds as legends, instantly identifiable rhyme slingers, and modern trailblazers like Paul Wall, Lacrae and streetwise icon Scarface. He earned his stripes on the streets of Houston, dropping his first mixtape on Christmas Eve 2007 before heading to California on a quest to realize his artistic ambitions to the fullest extent. His Gangsta Rock, Rock & Roll Gangsta, and Belo Horizonte mixtapes paved the way for what would be a barnstorming debut album that shook the world through social media transmissions, evocative live performances, and a mountain of praise from outlets like Rock Sound, AltPress, Metal Hammer, and Kerrang!, who nominated him as Best International Newcomer. Birth, School, Work, Death was produced by nü-metal co-creator Ross Robinson (Slipknot, Korn, Glassjaw), with instrumental contributions from members of frequent Robinson collaborators At The Drive-In and The Blood Brothers. Kerrang! hailed Hy
Drum maestro Frank Zummo has been the engine room for everyone from the Start to Mötley Crüe to Dead By Sunrise to Krewella to Sum 41 and a bunch of points in between. The Street Drum Corps founder regales Jason Pettigrew about his early days in the business; his fruitless major-label deal; the epic drum moment with Adrian Young and Josh Dun at the 2017 APMAS; and how now more than ever, drummers should be considered athletes. He also found one (just one) of Pettigrew's drummer jokes funny.
From his mirthful neurosis, pop hooks and best-ever hair, Justin Courtney Pierre is positively unforgettable. On Cautionary Tales, Jason Pettigrew asks him one question and gets the answers to five more in return. From getting fat to losing weight, French New Wave Film, and why he won't talk to you after shows, Pierre's future doesn't freak him out but it does fascinate him.
