Kara Nortman '93 is co-founder of Los Angeles's professional women's soccer team Angel City. In this episode, Kara recounts her evolution from leading LA's largest venture capital firm, Upfront Ventures, to co-founding Angel City alongside partners Natalie Portman and Julie Uhrman in 2020. Since then, Angel City has not only garnered significant fan followings and profitability (quadrupling its revenue projections in year one), but also developed a profit model to enable community and philanthropic impact. Using Angel City as a model, Kara has since broadened her focus--leading a $150M raise to form Monarch Collective, whose mission is to invest in women's teams, sports, and rights across the world. Finally, Kara describes her own Harvard-Westlake story and personal connections to the team—noting that three of Angel City's stars, including team captain Ali Riley '06, Gisele Thompson '24, and Alyssa Thompson '23 are all HW alumnae. Kara references Jeanne Huybrechts and Barb Welch of Harvard-Westlake, as well as Alan Blinder and Lori Dauphiny of Princeton University, as profound educational influences.

We won't tell you who they picked but you can be sure they did not agree on the outcome. Iowa Hawkeye Kelli McGroarty shares valuable experience about the process of entering the transfer portal. As a new player on the team late in her college career, Kelli had to learn what her role was and accept that it was different than on previous teams. She talks about evolving into the Hawkeye women's soccer program and, based on her stats this past season - did incredibly well to make an impact in such a short time. Sam and Kelli share about their late-season bonding and the laser focus they had in the post-season. Huw Williams joins Thad Bell from the Kansas City Soccer Journal to review the US Women's National team's draw with the Netherlands at the 2023 World Cup. After a 3-0 win versus Vietnam in the first match of the group stage, Vlatko Andonovski's team played to a 1-1 draw. It was a rematch of the 2019 final against a very good team. The US did not have a good first half but they were definitely better in the second half. Was it the lone sub (yes we discuss that), a change in tactics (a bit) or the US getting mad? Especially Horan. Andonovski went with the same lineup. We discuss possible alternatives. The US is coached by Kansas City resident Vlatko Andonovski. Williams and Andonovski worked together in the NWSL and in local soccer. The USWNT faces Viet Nam, Portugal, and the Netherlands in the group stage and Williams talks about what the United States faces with each one. Jace Peterson bunted pinch-runner Tyler Wade to third to start the 10th. Tyler Horton (0-1) struck out Shea Langeliers for the second out before Noda slapped a single to left — one of just two hits for Oakland in the game — to break the scoreless struggle. Shintaro Fujinami (5-7) got the win after striking out the side in the ninth. Trevor May pitched a scoreless 10th for his sixth save. Cubs 7, Brewers 6 – F/11 – Happ saves Cubs with 2 late throws to plate in wild 7-6 win over Brewers in 11 Left fielder Ian Happ threw out two runners at the plate in extra innings, and the Chicago Cubs pulled out a wild 7-6 win over the Milwaukee Brewers in 11 innings after squandering a late lead for the second consecutive game. Dansby Swanson homered and Miguel Amaya hit a two-run double to help the Cubs build a 6-2 cushion. But the Brewers scored twice in the eighth and twice more in the ninth to tie it. Happ cut down the potential winning run at home in the bottom of the 10th, and Chicago went ahead in the 11th when Cody Bellinger scored on Nico Hoerner’s infield single. Happ then threw out Owen Miller at the plate to end the game. All-Star Whit Merrifield had two hits and two RBIs, and the Blue Jays got back to winning coming off a three-game sweep by Boston. White Sox All-Star Luis Robert Jr. made it 3-2 in the sixth with a long three-run drive against Chris Bassitt for his 25th homer. The Cubs blew a late four-run lead but rebounded to beat the Brewers 7-6 in 11 innings. Ross praised his team’s resiliency, but many of his postgame comments focused on a series of “frustrating” calls and events throughout the game. Ross was perturbed that plate umpire Erich Bacchus prematurely called out Dansby Swanson when there were only two strikes, and he felt a Brewers baserunner interfered with a throw that allowed a run to score. Ross and first base coach Mike Napoli were both ejected. Ross also questioned why the Brewers closed their retractable roof on a mostly sunny afternoon. MLB – Ohtani leaves Angels game with blister, says he doesn’t plan to pitch in ASG Shohei Ohtani says he’s not planning to pitch in the All-Star Game next week after leaving the Los Angeles Angels’ 8-5 loss to the San Diego Padres with a blister on the middle finger of his right hand Tuesday. The two-way superstar could still play a significant role if he remains the starting designated hitter for the American League in Seattle. Ohtani exited on the mound against the Padres after giving up consecutive home runs in the sixth inning. The right-hander’s start had been pushed back a day due to a cracked fingernail. His velocity was down, and he left trailing 5-1. His exit came several hours after the Angels learned they’ll be without fellow All-Star slugger Mike Trout for several weeks because of a broken left wrist.  Trout will need surgery to repair his injury. Shintaro Fujinami (5-7) got the win after striking out the side in the ninth. Trevor May pitched a scoreless 10th for his sixth save. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Tonight Indiana Fever at Minnesota Lynx, 8:00 p.m. WNBA – Mystics acquire Queen Egbo from Fever for Amanda Zahui B. Egbo was taken 10th in the 2022 WNBA draft by the Fever and was honored as part of the All-Rookie team last year. Zahui B. played in 12 games after signing with the Mystics in February. She averaged 2.0 points and 1.4 rebounds this season. Tennis – Andy Murray gets a win at rainy Wimbledon and a thumbs-up from Roger Federer Roger Federer and Andy Murray have provided the highlights on a rainy Day 2 at Wimbledon. Light but persistent showers prevented the completion or even start of dozens of matches. Federer was honored at Centre Court before the start of play there under the closed roof and he stayed to watch Murray beat Ryan Peniston in straight sets in an all-British matchup. Other winners included No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz and No. 12 Cam Norrie among the men, and three top women: defending champion Elena Rybakina, 2002 runner-up Ons Jabeur and No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka. Golf – LPGA – Column: US Women’s Open at Pebble reminds veterans what they’re missing The U.S. Women’s Open is finally at Pebble Beach, the most recognizable of all U.S. Open courses. That’s a little too late for so many Hall of Famers who are at Pebble for a reunion of past Open champions. But it’s all about going forward, the USGA is making up for lost time. It’s one thing to be at Pebble Beach. What figures to lift the profile is for the Women’s Open to be going to Riviera and Oakland Hills, back to Oakmont and Interlachen. Being at historical venues help winners become part of golf history. Soccer – US talents Smith, Thompson headline the rising stars at Women’s World Cup The Women’s World Cup will be a showcase for some of the best young soccer players in the game. Matthew Boyd (5-5) allowed two runs and six hits in six innings for Detroit. He struck out seven without a walk. Brady Singer (4-7) lost his third straight decision, giving up five runs, seven hits and a walk in seven innings. Báez put the Tigers ahead 4-2 in the third, driving in Kerry Carpenter with his 1,000th hit. Cubs 8, Pirates 3 – Hendricks shuts down reeling Pirates as Cubs complete 3-game sweep with 8-3 victory Kyle Hendricks pitched effectively into the seventh inning and the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-3 to complete a three-game sweep. Nico Hoerner homered and tripled for the Cubs, who have won eight of nine. Ian Happ doubled twice and drove in three runs for Chicago. Josh Palacios had an RBI double for Pittsburgh but couldn’t stop the Pirates from dropping their ninth straight game. Pittsburgh has managed just 20 runs during a slide that’s seen the Pirates drop from first to fourth in the NL Central. Rangers 6, White Sox 3 – Heim homers as Rangers beat the White Sox 6-3 Jonah Heim hit a three-run homer a night after he was involved in a controversial play at the plate and the Texas Rangers beat the Chicago White Sox 6-3. Ezequiel Duran also connected as Texas won for the fourth time in five games. Martín Pérez pitched seven effective innings in his first victory in a month. The AL West leaders bounced back nicely after a frustrating 7-6 loss on Tuesday night. Chicago scored the winning run in its three-run eighth when Heim was called for illegally blocking the plate in a replay review that overturned umpire D.J. Reyburn’s out call. Today Tigers, Cubs, and White Sox are off MLB – MLB sued by 17 ex-scouts who say they were discriminated against because of age Seventeen former Major League Baseball scouts who say they were discriminated against because of their age have sued the league, its teams and Commissioner Rob Manfred. The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Denver. The former scouts allege violations of the federal Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 along with laws in 11 states and New York City. The scouts, ranging from 55 to 71, allege they were discriminated against from 2020-22. MLB said in a statement it looks "forward to refuting these claims in court.” NBA – NBA-champion Nuggets trade into the 1st round by swapping picks with the Pacers The NBA-champion Denver Nuggets struck a deal with Indiana to acquire a first-round round pick in the draft on Thursday night. The teams agreed to a deal that also gives the Nuggets the 32nd overall pick, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The Pacers will receive the 40th pick in this year’s draft from Denver and a first-round pick in 2024. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade has yet to be announced. NBA – With Wembanyama, there’s no debate at the top of NBA draft Victor Wembanyama’s towering shadow has hung over this NBA draft for months, blocking much of what is usually part of the process. There has been no debate about who the San Antonio Spurs should take with the No. 1 pick on Thursday night. When a player like Wembanyama comes along — and maybe none ever has — there’s no real reason to drum up any drama. The Spurs are not going to pass up someone who is listed at 7’4” but has the skills of a player much smaller. The 19-year-old from France has been called the best prospect since LeBron James came out of high school in 2003. NBA – NBA Draft Picks Detroit, 5, 31        Chicago: 11 (traded to Orlando), 42 (traded to Washington) Indiana: 7, 26 (from Cleveland), 40 (from Dallas), 55 (from Cleveland) WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Tonight Washington Mystics at Chicago Sky, 8:00 p.m. Indiana Fever at Seattle Storm, 10:00 p.m. Golf – PGA Tour will appear before a Senate panel investigating its deal with LIV A Senate subcommittee is asking executives from the PGA Tour, Saudi golf interests and LIV Golf to testify as Congress investigates the shocking business deal that upended the sport. Sen. Richard Blumenthal announced Wednesday that the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations would hold a hearing on July 11 to examine the stunning agreement the PGA Tour now has with Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund and the European tour. He invited PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, Public Investment Fund Governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan and LIV CEO Greg Norman to testify. The PGA Tour said in a statement that it looked forward to appearing to answer questions about the “framework agreement.” Golf – Zhang seeking to follow win in pro debut with a win at a major Rose Zhang turned professional with many expecting great things and she didn’t disappoint, winning the Mizuho Americas Open in her debut. The 20-year-old, two-time NCAA individual champion will look to keep it going this week when she takes on the best in women’s golf in the Women’s PGA Championship at Baltustol in Springfield, New Jersey. The task will be tougher this week with all 11 winners on the LPGA Tour and 19 of the top 20 players in the world entered in the event. Zhang said the biggest change for her has been the demands on her time. Hockey – Henrik Lundqvist headlines the Hockey Hall of Fame’s goalie-heavy class of 2023 Henrik Lundqvist headlines the Hockey Hall of Fame’s goaltender-heavy class of 2023. Fellow netminders Tom Barrasso and Red Wing Mike Vernon were also among the five players elected. Former NHL forward Pierre Turgeon and Canadian women’s hockey star Caroline Ouellette were also chosen. Stanley Cup-winning coach Ken Hitchcock and late executive Pierre Lacroix were picked in the builder category. Lundqvist is set to be inducted into the Hall in his first year of eligibility after winning Olympic gold for Sweden in 2006 and a pro career that included backstopping the New York Rangers to 11 playoff appearances in 12 seasons.  Vernon was so surprised he thought board chairman Lanny McDonald, a teammate when they won the Cup together with Calgary in 1989, was calling to ask him to play golf. The two-time Cup champion who was also playoff MVP when he won it in 1997 with Detroit had been eligible since 2005.  "The game has meant a lot to me throughout my life," Vernon said. “It is an emotional time for me. Might be a long time coming, but it’s still worth it.” FIFA – WWC – Morgan and Rapinoe selected for the US Women’s World Cup roster Eighteen-year-old Alyssa Thompson is among the 23 players selected for the United States team that will defend its title at the Women’s World Cup next month. Thompson is among a mix of veteran and newcomers named Wednesday to the team by head coach Vlatko Andonovski. Among the experienced players are Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan, who will each be making a fourth World Cup appearance in Australia and New Zealand. Thompson is joined by fellow up-and-coming stars Sophia Smith and Trinity Rodman, who is the daughter of former NBA star Dennis Rodman. She had her first goal this past weekend in her debut, and is just a star who is seeing her way onto the world stage. Finally, it's some quick NFL news as the Brodies review Bobby Wagner's return to Seattle and Elijah Moore being traded to the Cleveland Browns from the New York Jets. Courtney & André are back with their first episode of 2023 (fake ass year)! We have a lot to catch up on, and look forward to, so naturally we start with a dad joke. After that, we get into the USWNT roster announcement, why we're confused but not really, plus we're still waiting for that #FOTP Mia Fishel call up. Then we switch gears to discuss all things NWSL. We get into the big trade that gave Angel City the #1 overall pick in the upcoming draft, plus we hear how hype Courtney is to have Yazmeen Ryan at Gotham. We also talk about Debinha to Kansas City and why it's a scary proposition for the rest of the league, but a big win for the NWSL in the global market. We also discuss the draft, including why we're so hyped to see Alyssa Thompson and Michelle Cooper in the league. We then shift to the NWSL's Corrective Action, in which a number of coaches were banned permanently or with conditions, and monetary sanctions were doled out across clubs and even the league itself. We discuss what it all means, and what's next. Then, in Heated & Hyped, Courtney unveils her Benoit Blanc impersonation. ============= Follow Us: Twitter - @DiasporaUtdPod Instagram - diasporautdpod ============= Music credit: Finally by Loxbeats https://soundcloud.com/loxbeats Creative Commons — Attribution 3.0 Unported — CC BY 3. TYLER AND ALYSSA THOMPSON are two very special guests that inaugurate our first ever couple show. Alyssa is a dear friend who is thoughtful, funny, loving, and driven. Tyler is (just as funny and) an avid Carolina fan, a Virginia Tech Alum, a talented Architect, a father, and a stroke survivor. I have known these two since we moved to Boston in 2011. For almost ten years we have become like family to one another. Of course, we have a lot in common – all great friends do – we love pop music and dancing, laughing, British accents, and endless sarcasm. The Thompson's are a couple that you meet and want to hang out with the next night. These are simply good people with strong hearts and a hopeful spirits. In January of 2019, Tyler and Alyssa went to run a morning errand when Tyler suffered a massive stroke. For a time, we were not sure if Tyler would make it - it was that serious. For weeks, Tyler fought and fought – endless days and nights in hospitals and rehab. But the most amazing thing happened during this time. A groundswell of people came around them with love, support, generosity and encouragement unlike I have ever seen. Former NBA players, College coaches, Friends, Relatives, Friends of friends of friends of friends all came together to raise money that would begin to offset Tyler's lost salary. A beautiful act of humanity. Of course that is not the end of their story – really only the new beginning. Tyler and Alyssa live with their son Arlo in Waltham, MA. They have found their new life together to be a series of continuous adjustments, however Tyler's recovery and Alyssa's strength continue to remind us all that with a powerful community anything is possible. There are certainly hard days and difficulties, but Tyler and Alyssa continue to flourish and find hope and belief not only because they are courageous and brave, but because of the support of their neighbors, family, and friends around them. Here is Tyler and Alyssa Thompson and their lessons Ask for Help and Tend you Garden, let's see what he can teach us. - HERE WE GO.
