On Clash of the Correspondents James is joined by Fulham fan Lewis James and Newcastle fan Simon Bibby to gauge their views on whether Fantasy managers should be looking at their clubs for final day investment. Antonee Robinson is on pens (maybe), Will Osula is on fire with 6 in his last 6, but a deeper look tells us Fulham are not scoring freely, that said Newcastle are 15 without a clean sheet. Plus, are Marcos Silva and Eddie Howe staying or going? What's the future for Harry Wilson and Anthony Gordon? The importance of Bruno Guimaraes and more. Special Edition: The Long Game with Leander Schaerlaeckens Jason is taking some time off, so this week he's sharing his full conversation with Leander Schaerlaeckens — journalist, USMNT beat reporter, and author of the new book The Long Game: US Men's Soccer and Its Savage Four-Decade Journey to the Top (or Thereabouts). It's the definitive history of the program, written just in time for the World Cup. Jason calls it a must-read, and this conversation shows why. [0:00:28] — Jason introduces the episode and Leander's new book, The Long Game. He'll be back live soon — catch him at patreon.com/thebestsoccershow for Wednesday office hours, the Bestie Slack, and bonus content. [0:02:50] — Interview begins. Leander on the writing process: three-plus years, 150+ interviews, every US World Cup game since 1990 rewatched — and then US Soccer fired Berhalter and he had to rewrite the whole thing. [0:07:50] — The book's structure: a chronological USMNT history woven with profiles of six current players — Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie, Christian Pulisic, Ricardo Pepi, Matt Turner, and Antonee Robinson — each chosen because their story says something bigger about American soccer. [0:20:00] — The Dark Ages (1950–1990): the USMNT once went 11 years without winning a game and nobody noticed. A 1974 qualifier where they didn't have enough players and pulled one from the stands. A $5 per diem that players were sometimes asked to forego. It was a circus — and Leander went deep on why. [0:31:00] — The big structural question: is a US World Cup win inevitable, or does it require investment that doesn't make financial sense? Leander's take — it's not just a matter of time. The FC Dallas academy director's point lands hard: a kid in Dallas is still 12 times less likely to end up in a professional academy than a kid in Madrid, which has the same population but a dozen pro clubs. [0:43:00] — Closing thoughts: buy the book at your local bookstore or bookshop.org. Jason wraps with a thank-you and outro. Join the Bestie community at patreon.com/thebestsoccershow — Wednesday office hours with Jason, a bonus podcast feed, the Bestie Slack, and World Cup content on the way. Sammy is joined by Dom, Charlie, and Joe to look back at Fulham's first league win of the season against Leeds United on Saturday. It was 1-0 at the death with an unfortunate and bizarre own goal from Gabriel Gudmundsson, and the panel revel in the first three points of the campaign and a rare clean sheet. There's a load of praise for Fulham's new star winger, Kevin, whose cameo in the second half lit up the Cottage. However, there are also some concerns: the lads discuss worries around Fulham's attacking output and Antonee Robinson's slow return from injury. Next up on Correspondent Week James is joined by Fulham fan Lewis James to discuss The Cottagers and ask why everything feels so quiet on the transfer front and is it causing concern? What it does mean currently is that Fulham have stability and there are some very interesting FPL assets up for discussion with the likes of Rodrigo Muniz potentially underpriced, and there's a clear standout from the defensive options with concerns around the fitness of Antonee Robinson. On the eve of Copa América last summer, former U.S. Men's National Team midfielder Stu Holden came by the show to preview a competition that he would soon crisscross the country covering for FOX Sports. The tournament did not go well for the USA, and then-head coach Gregg Berhalter lost his job on the back of it. But it was also a great opportunity to take stock of the young Americans plying their trade for some of Europe's biggest clubs: Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, Gio Reyna, Antonee Robinson, Chris Richards and more.Holden spoke on the biases that American footballers have faced in Europe and his own pride in challenging those perceptions as a Premier League player with Bolton Wanderers a generation ago. But he also threw down a challenge to the high-flyers of the present, and a year later, his takes on many of the Americans abroad look rock-solid.Pulisic continued to thrive at AC Milan last season, Richards and Robinson went from strength to strength in England, and Reyna — among others — never cleared Holden's bar to become a key asset for his employer. (In fact, Reyna's time at Borussia Dortmund appears to be over.) As Holden put it, these guys need to do more than just be at these clubs if the USMNT is to do something major next summer at the 2026 World Cup.Get more Classic moments from The Football Weekend:"Go, Go USA!" The USMNT's Gold Cup roster is here, and it's stirring plenty of debate. Notable absences include stars Christian Pulisic, Yunus Musah, and Jedi Robinson. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino confirmed Pulisic will rest, while Musah withdrew for personal reasons. Josh Sargent? Simply left out due to tactical preference. The spotlight this summer turns to fresh faces, with five players—Alex Freeman, Damion Downs, Sebastian Berhalter, Quinn Sullivan, and Matt Freese—set to make their senior debuts. While familiar names like Tyler Adams and Folarin Balogun anchor the team, breakout potential lies in players like Diego Luna, Brian White, and Sebastian Berhalter, who could become national team regulars with strong showings. The big question: does this roster still scream “Gold Cup Title or Bust”? Off the field, the timing matters. This summer was supposed to build momentum—think trophy lifts and confetti—heading into the 2026 FIFA Men's World Cup on home soil. Instead, we're left wondering who will lead this group. Tim Ream? Tyler Adams? With upcoming games vs. Türkiye and Switzerland before the group stage kicks off, it's time for new heroes to emerge.
