THE ALLIANCE, 60min,. USA, DOC Directed by Amanda Jean Kowalski During the Arctic winter an intrepid oceanographer attempts to collect rare climate data, but his greatest combatant isn't the weather – it's the Italian Navy. http://thealliancefilm.org/ Get to know the filmmaker: I was initially hired by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to go on the ship to make a short doc about what it takes to get science done in extreme weather conditions, but it quickly became clear that the more significant story actually revolved around the relationship between the scientists and the Navy captain. So in the end this project morphed into a feature documentary that became a passion project for both myself and for the chief scientist featured in the film, Dr. Robert Pickart. Additionally I'm motivated to tell stories like this because I think it's important for people to see all of the challenges that come with trying to advance our understanding of the planet and our future. What happens when a writer tries to make oppressed robots stand in for tons of different kinds of real marginalized people in the same story? A confusing, frequently offensive, occasionally interesting mess. Amanda Jean joins the podcast to tackle Detroit: Become Human, a game that tried to make its robots an allegory for everything at once. Content notes: We discuss some real-world atrocities the game alludes to, including the Holocaust, American slavery, domestic abuse, sexual assault, and antisemitism. Listen to Amanda's previous, very thorough breakdown of Detroit: Become Human here Show notes, including some of the scenes we discussed, here Support the show on Patreon Tune in next time for our discussion of the game's fandom, which took the game's characters (and a few who barely appeared in the game) in some unexpected directions.
My name is Antonio Jean formerly known as Antonio Rowland. I am a singer, songwriter, and producer who was raised half of my life in Washington D.C. At the age of 13 my family and I moved to North Carolina where I continued my life, and education including college. Growing up my family and I experienced many hardships including financial issues and homelessness with no support system around to help us. The church failed us, and family failed us but we always had each other, and music. Amanda Jean Recording artist and Songwriter from NYC, Amanda Jean is an up and coming artist, who has performed in many venues across the tristate. Her most recent release is a song called "Promise to Stay" that she has written and produced herself. She has been spending many hours in the recording studio working on upcoming music and special songs that she is so excited to share with everyone. She has overcome so much, including the loss of her mom due to cancer, last year. She has used music as an outlet and hopes to touch many hearts through her lyrics and voice. Nothing can stop this artist on the rise!

This episode is to share some of my thoughts on this healing journey we're all on and how we absolutely CANNOT rush the process. I give you a couple great examples of WHY you can't rush it and also why you wouldn't want it to be over anyways. We get so anxious & caught up in the result - "healed", when really we need to slow down, give ourselves some love and compassion, and buckle up for the life-long ride. *BONUS* I do a card pull at the beginning of the episode! ----more---- Things mentioned in this episode: Tony Robbins heart activating exercise: 7 minute version, 20 minute version (if links don't work just youtube search "tony robbins heart exercise" My FREE guided EFT tapping session on reprogramming the belief "it's not safe to be you": www.richimperfection.com/safe ----more---- For more info on Rich Imperfections: Website: www.richimperfection.com Coaching info: www.richimperfection.com/coaching Instagram: @richimperfections Twitter: @richimprfection Facebook: Rich Imperfections (business page) or Amanda Jean

Content warnings: This episode discusses media which portrays trans characters experiencing suicidal ideation, murder, violence, deadnaming, transphobia, drug abuse, self-destructive behavior, and abuse. We also reference real-life attempted suicide (including a method). Follow Austin down the rabbit hole of exploring trans narratives, both subtextual and textual, in The Matrix and Imogen Binnie's Nevada. What do these very dissimilar pieces of media have in common? A lot, as it turns out, including the mythologizing of the self, the cyclical nature of coming out, and cool leather jackets. Austin feels a lot of things about navel-gazing trans characters, and Amanda defends Keanu Reeves at all costs.

**Content warnings**: discussion of children stabbing things, shitty dudes, homophobia, anti-Native racism, and gender essentialism Summary: In this pantastic episode, Austin and Amanda disagree on the particulars of their drunken book buying and wander through the hundred-year legacy of Peter Pan's cultural mythos: everything from the gender politics of Peter and Wendy to the queer appeal of Neverland. Austin talks shit about edgy takes on Peter Pan. Amanda makes sure that no one forgets about Hook.

Austin accompanies Amanda as she revisits twenty years of fannish enthusiasm and exasperation to discuss the Hannibal Lecter tetralogy by Thomas Harris. Specifically, why are the first two in the series so good despite their pitfalls? Why is the prequel so underwhelming? Amanda talks the perils of showing the monster, writing from a genius' POV, changing genres throughout a series, and licking steering wheels. **Content warnings:** This episode discusses murder, cannibalism, transphobia, abuse, gaslighting, non-consensual drugging, brainwashing, and other gross subjects you'd expect to find in an episode about a sadistic cannibal who thinks he's an artiste.
In the first episode of The Red Pen, Austin drags Amanda straight into the radical gender theory of queer and feminist sci-fi/fantasy from 1960 to 2018. Topics of discussion include: Is a genderless society a utopia? What about a society in which everyone is free to choose their own gender—in theory? And what do the gender binary and the Cold War have in common? (A depressing amount, as it turns out.) Content warnings: This episode discusses misogynistic, homophobic, and transphobic ideologies; the threat of nuclear war; and non-graphic gendered and homophobic violence.
**Content warning: This episode contains spoilers for the movie *Annihilation* (as well as some spoilers for the book it's based on). The ending is in no way spoiled, but some plot elements are laid out. There are also spoilers for *The Picture of Dorian Gray*. Also, suicide is mentioned.** After two and a half years, forty episodes, many arguments with Skype, and lots of Overwatch references, The Hopeless Romantic is closing its doors! Join Austin and Amanda for this last episode before their next podcast, The Red Pen, launches later in 2018. Topics include how a performance of *The Picture of Dorian Gray* really packed a punch and made Austin think about queer history and contemporary queer romance; how the book and movie *Annihilation* gave Amanda a lot of feelings about themes in sci-fi; and take a detour to discuss how the hosts are cranky with the state of current discourse on Queer Twitter (and Tumblr). Also, don't miss out on Amanda's feelings of betrayal toward William Shatner, and how Anthony Hopkins is never allowed to betray her. The hosts want to thank the wonderful listeners and amazing guests they've been privileged to have. They hope you'll join them on their next venture. The Red Pen launches later this summer, and it features Austin and Amanda cutting up fiction to see what it's made of.

**Content warning: part of this episode discusses a fictional relationship between a 17-year-old and a 24-year-old.** THR returns with a semi-revamped format! Austin and Amanda talk about the future of the show, delve into some of the realities of freelancing from their own experiences, and spend the last two-thirds of the episode talking about *Call Me By Your Name* and their wildly disparate reactions to it. (**Warning for book and movie spoilers.** There's a head's up in the episode when we get to spoiler territory as well.) Stay tuned after the credits for the oft-mentioned recording of the hosts and friends watching CMBYN's most infamous scene.
**Content warning: Austin and Amanda are tipsy/drunk in this episode again. Weird stuff happens. If drunkeness or people talking about being drunk (and hungover) bugs you, take care to skip this ep and we'll be back with another regular one soon.** THR celebrates its second anniversary with another infamous drunk episode! Or that was the plan, anyway. Austin and Amanda got a little too drunk and the material ranged between boring rambled stories and helpless wheezing about Beefman, *The Exorcist* TV show, The Couch Anecdote, and the origins of our friendship. We've hacked and slashed the best bits and stapled them onto a sober recording to flesh the whole thing out. We hope you enjoy, and thanks so much for sticking with us for two whole years.
Taking up where [part one][1] left off, Amanda and Austin discuss contracts and what some of their clauses may mean, the rundown on royalty rates and payment schedules, the editing process from start to finish, social media etiquette for beginners, and even how to address your submission email. (Pretty obviously, no one at THR is a lawyer, and we can't give you legal and/or tax advice. We're relaying very general info from our personal experiences of working in the queer romance industry. Please seek appropriate professional guidance when it comes to contracts and taxes.)
**Content warning: Austin and Amanda are tipsy/drunk in this episode. They also discuss the TV shows Hannibal and Attack on Titan briefly, which feature morbid subject matter. (Amanda's generally a creep, too.)** It's THR's one-year anniversary! In celebration, Austin and Amanda got drunk and talked about abandoned projects, tried and failed to plot a project, and discussed how Korean dramas are basically just serial romance novels. Lots of inappropriateness was had.
As part of my continuing series with the designers of the Mighty Lucky Quilting Club, today's guest is Amanda Jean Nyberg. Also known as Crazy Mom Quilts, Amanda is hands down one of the queens of scraps. She is a pattern designer, has a fabric collection called Good Neighbors with Connecting Threads, co-wrote Sunday Morning Quilts and is a wife and mother. In The Hopeless Romantic, hosts Austin Chant and Amanda Jean talk about the queer romance genre. In this debut episode they talk about the foundations of the genre, from the pulp tragedies of the 1950s to the shamelessly romantic ebooks of today. Future episodes of The Hopeless Romantic will feature industry guests. The next episode will be about National Novel Writing Month, so be sure to tune in! Art by Keezy Young Music by Carly Ann Worden **Hosts:** **Amanda Jean** **Co-creator/Co-host** Amanda Jean is an editor, publicist, and occasional writer of queer romance. She grew up devouring het romance novels and shifted to LGBT romance as a teen when her thirsty queer nature revealed itself. Amanda has worked with Less Than Three Press, Torquere Press, NineStar Press, Evernight Publishing, Siren-BookStrand, and serves as the LGBT Director for Alternating Current's The Spark. When not wrangling manuscripts, you can find her watching documentaries, reading too many books on true crime, and caring too much about fictional characters. His interests include cooking everything, petting friendly dogs and cats, and writing about all kinds of rad queer people. He lives in Seattle with his partners in crime, a pleasant collection of game consoles, and an abundance of tea. In the regrettably large amount of time he spends not writing romance novels, he works in interactive media as a game designer and does his best to stay awake through college.
