In this episode of World's Greatest Business Thinkers, host Nick Hague speaks with Art Juedes and Rick Gering, co-founders of Eastbay,  about how a chance meeting at a Wisconsin 10K race led to the creation of Eastbay, one of the most influential mail-order athletic retailers in history. Starting with just 108 pairs of running shoes, they built a multi-million-dollar business by focusing relentlessly on direct customer access, operational excellence, and fast adaptation to customer behavior.  The conversation explores how Eastbay survived supplier crises, built loyalty through community rather than marketing, and maintained a 40-year partnership grounded in trust and compromise. It's a masterclass in customer obsession, entrepreneurial resilience, and building enduring competitive advantage without massive capital.  What You Will Learn: How to build a competitive advantage through radical customer focus Why operational excellence becomes your moat when you lack capital The pivot principle: Let your customers redesign your business model:  How to navigate supplier relationships when you're undercapitalized Why trust and compromise are the non-negotiable foundations of long-term partnerships The framework for decision-making under uncertainty   If you enjoyed this episode, make sure to subscribe, rate, and review it on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube Podcasts. Instructions for doing this are here.   About Guest: Rick Gering and Art Juedes are co-founders of East Bay, the pioneering mail-order athletic footwear retailer that revolutionized direct-to-consumer sports retail. Born two days apart in June 1952 in Warsaw, Wisconsin, these lifelong runners transformed their passion for athletics and customer service into a business empire that grew from a basement operation to a $35+ million enterprise before their 1997 sale to Foot Locker. Their expertise spans supply chain innovation, brand building in competitive markets, and creating loyal communities through exceptional customer experience, lessons forged during the "sneaker wars" of the 1980s and 90s, when they secured exclusive partnerships with Nike, Reebok, and emerging brands like Under Armour.   Quotes: "We were at our wits' end trying to figure out how we would get product, how we would get shoes because we had no money. There were three of us who originally were going to go into it, and I had called Art to maybe be the fourth because he was the one who would have made it work. It was a number of chances all put together, by people who didn't really know what the end game was going to be." - Rick "Our first sale became our second business plan. Once the kids tried the shoes on, they weren't giving them up; they were selling right there. The kids couldn't wait to get the shoes so much that they loved them, so we realized that our idea to take orders and send shoes later was out the door." - Art "There weren't a lot of other distractions, so we really could focus on the athlete and our customer, listen and learn, and figure out what makes what's important to them. In a larger town, there's so much more noise that even the athletes get distracted. The big thing that we did differently than any other retail store is go directly to the kids." - Rick "We decided to go all in on the Nike Air line. If that line didn't sell, we were toast. But it was a great seismic shift for East Bay because Jordan was a seismic shift in the shoe and footwear industry. Before that, everyone looked at athletic footwear as equipment, and after that, athletic footwear became part of your identity." - Art Keywords: Primary Keywords (Core Themes): East Bay running shoes, mail order business, sneaker entrepreneurship, direct-to-athlete business model, small town startup, customer-centric business strategy, athletic footwear industry, Nike Air Jordan partnership, business partnership success, mail order catalog strategy Secondary Keywords (Related Subtopics): inventory management startup, supplier relationships Nike Reebok, business pivots adaptation, catalog marketing strategy, mail order logistics, athletic retail innovation, team sports sales, sneaker culture history, vertical integration business, customer service excellence, competitive advantage small business   Episode Resources: The Book of Eastbay on Amazon World's Greatest Business Thinkers on Apple Podcasts World's Greatest Business Thinkers on Spotify World's Greatest Business Thinkers on YouTube

There are companies that sell shoes. And then there are companies that shape the way an entire generation experiences them. Eastbay was the latter... and most people have no idea how improbable the whole thing was.Art Juedes and Rick Gering started Eastbay out of a store in Wausau, Wisconsin. Two coaches with 16 years of combined college education, zero business courses between them, and a vision that shoe stores in this country were failing athletes. No one specialized. No one had inventory. No one knew what they were talking about when you called. So Art and Rick decided they would be the ones who did. What followed was one of the most consequential stories in sneaker history... one that most of us lived through without ever knowing the people behind it.In this episode of Outside The Box, Nick sits down with Art and Rick to talk about the moment Nike pulled 40% of their business overnight because Eastbay was too successful at mail order, how Shaquille O'Neal showing up to a Nike meeting in all Eastbay gear helped get them the exclusive back, the tent sales in Wausau where Air Jordans moved out of a parking lot and lines stretched for half a mile, Kevin Plank pitching Under Armour to them before Under Armour was anything, and why they invested $100,000 in a digital camera in 1989 so they could produce a catalog every three weeks while Phil Knight was asking how they did it so fast.Nick's personal connection to Eastbay runs deep... four siblings fighting over one catalog until his mom finally ordered a fifth. He built the original Eastbay Blog for Sole Collector. And this conversation is, as he puts it, probably one of the most important sneaker history conversations he's ever had on any show.Art and Rick's new book, The Book of Eastbay, is available now at BookofEastBay.com. All profits go to the Little Warriors Foundation, a childhood cancer charity.More Sneaker Business Insights at TheSneakerNewsletter.com

Power isn't shouted in this world—it's tailored. Discover how suits, fabric, and subtle choices quietly drive tension in a political thriller. In this thoughtful and inspiring conversation, host Catherine Baumgardner sits down with acclaimed costume designer Jenny Gering, whose work spans The Americans and season three of The Diplomat. Gering reflects on her childhood split between tomboy freedom and classic Hollywood obsession, crediting old movies, vintage fashion, and storytelling as the roots of her creative instincts. The discussion traces her unconventional path into costume design—one built on curiosity, saying yes, and discovering that seemingly unrelated skills can suddenly click into purpose. Gering offers a candid look at the demands of episodic television, describing The Americans as a trial-by-fire education in speed, research, and stamina, while emphasizing the importance of mentorship, collaboration, and problem-solving under pressure. As the conversation shifts to The Diplomat, Gering unpacks the subtle art of designing for political thrillers: restrained palettes, repeated garments, and the careful use of tone and texture to differentiate characters without breaking realism. She explains how costumes must ground the audience in reality, making tension feel immediate and believable. Throughout, themes of humility, adaptability, ego-free collaboration, and lifelong curiosity emerge—offering invaluable insight for creatives navigating high-pressure storytelling environments. The "Voice of Costume" is the first podcast created between working costume designers sharing stories, inspiration, struggles, and insights into the creative career of costume design. This episode originally aired on October 28, 2019. On July 6, 2019, 25-year-old Chance Englebert spent the day golfing with family in Gering, Nebraska. He later left with his wife, Baylee, and their infant son to stop by Baylee's grandparents' house. According to Baylee, it was in her grandparents' driveway around 7:30 p.m. that Chance got out of the car and walked away. He was captured on surveillance video walking in Terrytown and was never seen again. On October 10, 2025, more than six years after Chance Englebert disappeared, his remains were discovered below a steep cliff in a remote area of Scotts Bluff National Monument. The location was approximately three to five miles from where he was last seen on surveillance video in Terrytown, though some route-based estimates of the distance he would have traveled on foot place it closer to eight miles. Authorities say evidence at the scene was consistent with a fall of up to several hundred feet, and multiple forensic specialists concluded his death was accidental, caused by blunt force trauma from a rapid deceleration event. Investigators reported no evidence of foul play. Chance's family, while accepting that a fall likely caused his death, continues to have questions about how he reached that location given the conditions and timeline. If you have any information related to the disappearance or death of Chance Englebert, please contact the Gering Police Department at (308) 436-5089.If you have a missing loved one that you would like to have featured on the show, please fill out our case submission form.Follow The Vanished on social media at:FacebookInstagramPatreonSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

On the night of July 6th, 2019, in western Nebraska, a young father seemingly vanished into thin air.  He was Chance Englebert, a 25 year old welder, cowboy and newlywed - gone without a trace.  Earlier that day, Chance had been visiting his in-laws when a casual round of golf turned tense due to some remarks about his new job that angered him.  Upset, he told his wife he wanted to go back home to Wyoming.  When she didn't agree to leave town - he got out of the car and walked away.  Alone. On foot. With a storm brewing overhead. Surveillance cameras later captured him walking through town, looking down at his phone, like someone reading a map. He sent a final text that didn't sound like it came from him. And just like that, no one ever heard from him again. His disappearance ignited one of the most baffling manhunts in the region. Drones, cadaver dogs, hundreds of volunteers on the ground, on horseback, and ATVs,  across 2,400 acres.  Yet despite all the efforts - they've never found a single clue. There are no answers. In this episode of the ChinaPower Podcast, Ms. Mona Yacoubian and Mr. Tuvia Gering join us to unpack the latest escalation between Israel and Iran and explore how China is navigating this evolving conflict. They begin by situating the conflict in the aftermath of Hamas's October 7 attack, which triggered a series of strikes by Iranian-backed militias that eventually led to direct Israel-Iran military confrontations. Ms. Yacoubian outlines how Israeli strikes were timed around a perceived window of Iranian vulnerability and rising concerns over Iran's nuclear enrichment levels. Mr. Gering describes a significant paradigm shift in Israeli security doctrine after October 7, and the belief that Iranian threats, both nuclear and conventional, have necessitated preemptive action, especially with the current Trump administration's backing. Ms. Yacoubian highlights the limited material support to Iran from Russia, North Korea, and China, and noted China's preference to prioritize regional economic ties over military entanglement. Mr. Gering delves into the mixed Chinese domestic debates on Iran and explores unconfirmed reports of potential Chinese arms transfers to Iran. Finally, they assess what these developments may mean for China's long-term role in Middle East security, including the possibility of a new security architecture that could include both Israel and Iran, and how Iran's strategic calculations may shift amid growing isolation. Mona Yacoubian is senior adviser and director of the Middle East Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). She has more than thirty years of experience working on the Middle East and North Africa, with a focus on conflict analysis, governance and stabilization challenges, and conflict prevention. She was previously vice president of the Middle East and North Africa Center at the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP), where she managed field programming in Iraq, Libya, and Tunisia as well as Washington, D.C.–based staff. In 2019, she served as executive director of the congressionally appointed Syria Study Group. From 2014 to 2017, Yacoubian served as deputy assistant administrator in the Middle East Bureau at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), where she had responsibility for programming across Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, and Iraq. Captain (Res.) Previously, he was a research fellow at the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security (JISS) and the Israeli Chinese Media Center. It can be difficult for us to trust God when He works in mysterious ways. The Jewish believers of the early church felt this and struggled heavily with the ways God chose to move among the Gentiles. As they worked on understanding and accepting the direction God was leading in Acts 11 He just kept moving forward! There is truth to understand that nothing will be able to hinder God’s plan from being accomplished in His timing, and for His glory! His word and character help us to trust in the midst of confusing movement, but, like the Jewish believers we see throughout the New Testament, we don’t always take the help they offer… If you’ve ever found yourself in a place where God was doing something, but you were not aware, ready, or comfortable with how He was doing it you will find good company in the beginning of Acts 11. The call to us as believers is to still find ways to trust and praise God as He moves, because when we do we witness Him going far beyond what we could ask or imagine. The book of Acts started with Jewish Followers of Jesus, but at this transition point we see the explosion of the faith in the Gentile world. It was among the Gentiles even that the term Christian was first used to describe the followers of Jesus. God truly works in mysterious ways, but we can always trust that His plan is "good, pleasing, and perfect.”(Rom 12:2) Join us this weekend for our Celebration Sunday happening at the Weborg 21 center in Gering! In this episode of the ChinaPower Podcast, Mr. Tuvia Gering joins us to discuss China's strategy in the context of the Israel-Hamas war and the Red Sea crisis. He dissects the different views within China and the role China has played in both. He shares that China blames the United States for the war and that the PRC response to the region is informed by China's desire to push back against the Western-led world order. Mr. Gering also discusses the politics behind the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea and the economic ramifications that have followed. Overall, China's responses to both crises have been high on rhetoric and low on action. Finally, Mr. Gering warns of the possibility of broader escalation in the Middle east and the low likelihood of Chinese willingness to work with the United States.   Tuvia Gering is a nonresident fellow in the Atlantic Council's Global China Hub, a researcher at the Diane & Guilford Glazer Foundation Israel-China Policy Center at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), and a Tikvah Fund's Krauthammer fellow based in Jerusalem and specializing in Chinese security and foreign policy. On the morning of October 07, 2023, Hamas launched an unprovoked attack from the Gaza Strip, indiscriminately killing more than 1,400 Israeli and foreign nationals. Over 200 civilians, including women and children, were taken to Gaza as hostages. IN response to this attack, as well as subsequent attacks launched from Lebanon and Syria, Israel began an unprecedented bombing campaign of Gaza and targeted Hezbollah and Syrian government military positions. The conflict is unlikely to end soon and may spread. While the conflict itself demands global attention, the focus of this podcast is Chinese foreign and security policy. This discussion focuses on China's response to the war, China's relations with Palestine and Israel, and the actions that Beijing might take in the coming weeks and months that could help defuse the conflict or cause it to worsen. To date, China has not condemned Hamas. Instead, it has criticized what it calls Israel's disproportionate military response and the “collective punishment of the Gazan people.” Moreover, it has trumpeted its position as an unbiased potential mediator and called for a ceasefire and the implementation of a two-state solution.Host Bonnie Glaser is joined by Tuvia Gering, who, like many Israelis, has been activated to defend his country. Gering is a leading expert on China and its relations with the Middle East. In his civilian capacity, he is a researcher at the Diane & Guilford Glazer Foundation's Israel-China Policy Center at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv and a nonresident fellow for the Atlantic Council's Global China Hub. Timestamps[02:25] China's Past Relationships with Israel and Palestine[03:43] Reaction to the Chinese Response [05:06] China's Interests in Supporting Palestine[09:06] China's Reaction to the Death of Chinese Citizens[10:55] Benefits of a Wider Conflict for China [15:02] Comparisons to the War in Ukraine[17:54] China as a Mediator for the War[20:55] Antisemitism in Chinese Society[25:35] Outcome of the War for China

When China brokered a historic detente between Saudi Arabia and Iran earlier this year, it seemed that a new phase in world history – and certainly in Chinese foreign policy – had opened up. Instead of the US being a policeman of the world, it was the rising power, China, that was stepping into that role. Whereas Chinese foreign policy had previously only really cared about promoting trade and silencing dissidents, it seemed that perhaps, now, Beijing was taking a more leadership role in global diplomacy and security issues. And yet the events of the last week and China's response to them have shown that perhaps the country isn't ready for that responsibility just yet. In response to the horrors unfolding in Israel and later Gaza, Beijing has given only lukewarm statements, calling for 'relevant parties to remain calm, exercise restraint and immediately end the hostilities to protect civilians'. At no point has it condemned Hamas by name. So what does this mean for China's grander ambitions in the Middle East? With me to discuss is Tuvia Gering. During peacetime, his full time role is as a researcher on China and the Middle East, with the Israeli thinktank the Institute for National Security Studies and he is also a nonresident fellow in the Atlantic Council. But in the last week, as with all Israelis, his life has been changed forever. He's now been called up for active duty. What you're about to hear is an incredibly well informed but raw contribution from an expert whose research interests have come crashing into his real life.

But instead of going directly home, Baylee says she drives them back to her grandparents' home and she and Chance get into a fight in the driveway that results in Chance walking away from the home. This is something Chance did when he would get upset, he would take a walk to cool down and then come back when he was in a better frame of mind. But this time Chance didn't come back. Chance Englebert went missing from Gering, Nebraska on July 6th, 2019. Chance has brown hair and hazel eyes, he is 5 feet 11 inches tall, and has a medium build. He was last seen wearing a short sleeve button-up Wrangler shirt, dark blue Wrangler jeans, roper-style boots, and a black and white trucker hat. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Gering Police Department at 308-436-5088.
