Hey Gang On tonight's episode, well it's a somewhat origin story as we talk about Hannibal Rising! - Flicks-ology!
Visit Buffalo Bill's House! https://buffalobillshouse.com/We made it to the final Hannibal movie based on the final book. This time the same person wrote both. Thomas Harris brings us the origin story of his character Hannibal Lector. Was this an origin story we needed? Is it any good? Did the late Gaspard Ulliel do a good job playing the character? Watch and find out!
THIS WEEK: Manhunter (1986), Hannibal (2001), Red Dragon (2002), Hannibal Rising (2007)After covering Jonathan Demme's Silence of The Lambs last week we decided to keep the ball rolling and cover the rest of the film adaptations of Thomas Harris' Hannibal Lecter novels. Not that any of us need an excuse to watch Manhunter for the 74726587432 time. Maybe we could have done without Bret Ratner, Hannibal's silly Italian hat, and the Samurai training montage though. In our latest instalment of Page to Screen, Gen and Jette talk about The Silence of the Lambs. We had a great time talking about the classic film and the novel by Thomas Harris to kick off spooky season. It's easy to see why Hannibal Lecter has captivated people! We're not saying we like him necessarily, but he's definitely fun to read about (and watch!)Show NotesThe Silence of the Lambs film is one of only three to have won all five major awards at the Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor for Anthony Hopkins, and Best Actress for Jodie Foster. The film is also the only horror film to have won Best Picture. We're both ready to dive deep into the Hannibal Lecter canon, including all the books, films, and tv adaptations. In our next episode we'll be celebrating our fifth (!!!) anniversary of the podcast!Other Books & Screen Adaptations in the Hannibal SeriesRed Dragon by Thomas HarrisHannibal by Thomas HarrisHannibal Rising by Thomas HarrisHannibal (2001 film)Red Dragon (2002 film)Hannibal Rising (2007 film)Hannibal (2013-2015 tv show) Clarice (2021 tv show)Don't forget to follow us on Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter or email us at hello@anotherbookontheshelf.com.

"Hello Clarice..." easily one of the most memorable and iconic lines in film history. Delivered with devilish perfection from the one and only Sir Anthony Hopkins in the role that defined his career. In Silence of the Lambs we were introduced to quite possibly the greatest on-screen villain of all-time Hannibal "the Cannibal" Lecter. As we begin our Halloween spooky season kick-off we wanted to approach the most charming villain we can think of. And not just the Anthony Hopkins version but easily the next best incarnation in Mads Mikkelsen from the NBC series Hannibal. We're also going to touch on the 2 other incarnations of Hannibal there have been on-screen from Manhunter and Hannibal Rising not mention the books. So we won't keep you waiting any longer that would be well - rude and we all know what Dr. Lecter does with the rude. "Ready when you are Sgt. Imo and James' retrospective-review feast ends with the 'Hannibal Lecter' franchise's unwanted hors d'oeuvre: 'Hannibal Rising' (2007). For one of our critics its a return to a rotten meal not digested since the film's release. For the other, it's another fresh bite into this last entry. Through the haze of their two parallel hangovers, the critics find themselves surprised by the final film's treatment of continental trauma, troubling transference and the 30-minute transformation of a disturbed knee biter into Hannibal the Cannibal ™. It's 'ta-ta!' on this retrospective season!
Andrew and Dave are back! Unfortunately, they also have to contend with the misbegotten cinematic return of Hannibal Lecter in the form of director Peter Webber's 2007 film HANNIBAL RISING, the film which ostensibly tells the origins of the infamous fiction serial killer, though good luck finding anything that the character named Hannibal in this film has in common with the earlier incarnations. *SPOILER WARNING* - This episode contains spoilers for Hannibal (2001), Red Dragon, Hannibal Rising (2007) and the Hannibal TV series. After our epic dissection of The Silence of the Lambs and Manhunter in our last episode, The Movie Robcast moves onto The Lecter Variations. Returning are Ian Bird and Sarah Johnson from the previous episode to chew over more Lecter, and, to really blend the metaphors, their insights are a feast for the ears! From the troublesome Hannibal (although not everyone on the pod is a hater of this controversial sequel to Lambs), to the pantomime of Red Dragon and the yawn of Hannibal Rising, ending with the triumph of Bryan Fuller's Hannibal TV series, we find our way through the labyrinth that is Lecter lore. This month’s Out Now with Aaron and Abe commentary track is taking it all back to our Lithuanian beginnings. Aaron and is joined by Brandon Peters, Yancy Berns, and Scott Mendelson to discuss Hannibal Rising, the near-forgotten prequel film that takes an unnecessary look at the iconic villain. This is the final chapter of our Hannibal Lecter commentary series, and this is obviously where it all comes together, so get ready. Listen in to hear the group talk about the fact that this film exists, why movies like this are made, what else was taking place in the world of film at this point, and occasionally some thoughts on the actual film. There’s plenty more discussion about the nature of the production, what makes this film stand out as lesser than what came before, and lots of fun tangents as well. On Valentine's Day, "The Silence of the Lambs" celebrates 30 years of haunting imaginations and changing serial-killer cinema forever. On this week's Be Reel, Noah and Chance appreciate the many inimitable qualities of Jonathan Demme's 1991 classic, including its lack of genre fealty, its simultaneous intensity and restraint, and getting the best out of Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins. From there, Be Reel dives into the wider world of Thomas Harris adaptations, discussing Michael Mann's icy-veined "Manhunter" (1986), the gore carnival of Ridley Scott's "Hannibal" (2001), and the bizarre origin story attempt "Hannibal Rising" (2007). --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/message
On Valentine's Day, "The Silence of the Lambs" celebrates 30 years of haunting imaginations and changing serial-killer cinema forever. On this week's Be Reel, Noah and Chance appreciate the many inimitable qualities of Jonathan Demme's 1991 classic before exploring the full menu of Thomas Harris adaptations: "Manhunter" (1986), "Hannibal" (2001), and "Hannibal Rising" (2007).

Book Vs Movie The Silence of the Lambs Thomas Harris’s 1988 Novel Vs the 1991 Classic Film The Margos are closing out our Halloween episodes with one of the best films about a serial killer of all time--The Silence of the Lambs. The Thomas Harris book was released in 1988 and is a sequel to 1981’s Red Dragon (which is the basis for the 1986 movie Manhunter and the 2002 remake Red Dragon.) There is also an origin story about Hannibal Lechter in 2007’s Hannibal Rising and a TV series called Hannibal (NBC TV 2013-2015) which uses many of the original Red Dragon characters but set in more modern times. Confused? Don’t worry, we stick to the Jonathan Demme-directed film for this episode. The story features FBI trainee Clarice Starling (played by Jodie Foster in this film) who meets convicted killer Hannibal Lechter and with his guidance--finds the serial killer named “Buffalo Bill” before he is to kill Catherine Martin (Brooke Smith.) (Spoiler!) Anthony Hopkins is (perhaps) the most celebrated version of Hannibal Lechter and the film not only made millions at the box office at a usually quiet time of year (released February 14, 1991) but there were multiple awards for the cast and crew from the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes, and the BAFTAs over a year after its release. Listen to this episode to hear us talk about the novel & film while we decide which we like better. In this ep the Margos discuss: The reclusive life of author Thomas Harris Major changes between the 1988 book and the 1991 film The controversies that still surround the film 30 years later (and how Jonathan Demme felt about the character of Jame Gumb) The incredible art direction of the prisons The cast: Jodie Foster (Clarice Starling,) Kasi Lemmons (Ardelia Mapp,) Scott Glenn (Jack Crawford,) Frankie Faison (Barney,) Anthony Hopkins (Dr. Hannibal Lechter,) Anthony Heald (Chilton,) Ted Levine (Jame Gumb,) and Chris Isaak (hunky FBI guy.) Clips used: The Silence of the Lambs trailer Clarice meets Dr. Lechter Jame Gumb with Catherine Clarice visits Dr. Lechter at the courthouse/jail The last scene The Silence of the Lambs score by Howard Shore Join our Patreon page to help support the show! https://www.patreon.com/bookversusmovie Book Vs. As novelist John Connolly publishes a prequel to his hugely successful Charlie Parker thriller series, he and critic Suzi Feay discuss the art of creating a prequel, both in books and on screen, from Endeavour to Hannibal Rising to The Wide Sargasso Sea. From the Minack Theatre, nestled in the cliffs of west Cornwall, to Cirencester’s Barnfest, and Brighton Open Air Theatre, many theatre-goers have turned to the great outdoors as indoor theatres remain shuttered due to Covid-19 restrictions. The Maltings Theatre in St Albans has just kicked off its 6th annual outdoor festival, set in a Roman Theatre built in 140AD, with a programme that includes The Merry Wives of Windsor, Henry V and HMS Pinafore. Its Artistic Director, Adam Nichols, joins John Wilson to discuss the joys, challenges and opportunities of outdoor theatre. Around the UK, the pandemic has caused arts venues, organisations and establishments to have to make dramatic cuts to their output and costs just to stay afloat. With no definite end in sight when they can start generating income again, redundancies seem inevitable. Plus Suzi Feay comments on the publication of 25 books by female authors who will be known, for the first time, by their real names. All of them are women who wrote under male pen-names - including George Eliot, whose Middlemarch will now be republished with the name Mary Anne Evans on the cover. *Spoiler and Graphic Content Alert*This is Part 2 of our two part discussion in the realm of Thomas Harris' novels. In this episode we discuss the NBC show Hannibal, how it ties into Harris' novels Red Dragon Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal and Hannibal Rising as well as their film adaptations. Throughout the hour we discuss all 3 seasons as well as share our favorite episodes!Brief Synopsis:Hannibal is an American psychological horror-thriller television series developed by Bryan Fuller for NBC. The series is based on characters and elements appearing in Thomas Harris' novels Red Dragon (1981), Hannibal (1999), and Hannibal Rising (2006) with focus on the relationship between FBI special investigator Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) and Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen), a forensic psychiatrist destined to become Graham's most cunning enemy and at the same time, the only person who can understand him.

For the 2020 Valentine's Day episode, Justin, Kam, and Pat run through Anthony Hopkins' legendary portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (1991), HANNIBAL (2001), and RED DRAGON (2002). And for good measure, the totally dismal HANNIBAL RISING (2007). Watch the TV show.

This week, Chris Cabin and Eric Szyszka of the We Hate Movies podcast (http://www.whmpodcast.com/) joins Griffin and David to discuss the original Hannibal Lecter film: 1986's Manhunter. But what motivated producer Dino De Laurentiis to scrap the adapted title Red Dragon in favor of Manhunter? Did Michael Mann's research involve becoming pen pals with an incarcerated murderer? Is poet and painter William Blake's Great Red Dragon on fleek? Together they examine the performances of William Petersen and Brian Cox, the work of novelist Thomas Harris and the complete Lecter-verse (including Hannibal Rising), Walt Disney’s frozen head and serial killer home design aesthetics. Austin accompanies Amanda as she revisits twenty years of fannish enthusiasm and exasperation to discuss the Hannibal Lecter tetralogy by Thomas Harris. Specifically, why are the first two in the series so good despite their pitfalls? Why is the prequel so underwhelming? Amanda talks the perils of showing the monster, writing from a genius' POV, changing genres throughout a series, and licking steering wheels. **Content warnings:** This episode discusses murder, cannibalism, transphobia, abuse, gaslighting, non-consensual drugging, brainwashing, and other gross subjects you'd expect to find in an episode about a sadistic cannibal who thinks he's an artiste.
This week, Destiny and Em talk about the TV show, HANNIBAL! In which our heroes conclude their three-part Hannibal Movie Maintenance trilogy by forgetting what a movie is, use their imaginations instead of vision and put red pen to paper to try to cook up the fifth instalment in the Hannibal saga. We once again try to forget Hannibal Rising, take several trips to sunny Buenos Aires and talk about what makes or breaks an adaptation. Gabe quickly writes an entire novel while the others swoon, Zoe is sad we're focusing on the book version of Will Graham and not the TV version of Will Graham, and Zammit just wishes it would never end. Gabe knows literally everything about this franchise, Zoe makes a spooky prediction, Zammit prefers Hannibal when he's not in the limelight and James is nothing but questions. Prepare the Chianti and fava beans. Books and Nachos is having a month long meal with author Thomas Harris and his seminal creation Dr. Hannibal Lecter. As a companion podcast to the current movie review series over at NowPlayingPodcast.com, Stuart In LA is cracking the spines on the four novels that inspired the five films to feature the caged cannibal. The 2006 novel Hannibal Rising delves into the memory palace of Lecter's mind to unlock the secret traumas that drive his thirst for vengeance and human flesh. Can this blunt little tool dissect our favorite serial killer, or will the prequel leave a bad taste in readers' mouths? Join Stuart for the final conversation in this series to find out!
After Red Dragon's success more Lecter films were guaranteed, and to keep with author Thomas Harris' original vision this time the movie was not just based on one of his novels--the Hannibal Rising screenplay was written by Harris in conjunction with the new novel telling of Hannibal the Cannibal's early years. Can this film provide a future for the series without Anthony Hopkins, and does Gaspard Ulliel's Hannibal rise to the occasion? Listen to Arnie, Stuart, and Jakob's final review in the Hannibal Lecter series to find out!

Quickly after Hannibal hit theaters production began on yet another installment of the Hannibal Lecter franchise, and this time instead of looking forward to Harris writing another Hannibal story they looked backwards to Red Dragon, Harris' first novel featuring the caged cannibal. Already made into a film in the 80's, Manhunter, now the story is retold in an adaptation more faithful to the original novel and with Hopkins again reprising the role that he is best known for. With an all-star cast and director Brett Ratner at the helm, was this film a needed update or a desperate cash-grab? Listen to Jakob, Arnie, and Stuart's review to find out!

When Silence of the Lambs was received with critical acclaim and box office success, audiences waited with baited breath for the reunion of the cannibal and the agent -- Hannibal and Clarice. But despite audience anticipation, author Thomas Harris did not complete the sequel novel Hannibal until 1999, and upon its release many of the talent associated with the original film declined to return. But with new director Ridley Scott, fresh off his Oscar for Gladiator, behind the camera and Hopkins returning to chew up the scenery and his victims, could this film live up to the last or is it too much for audiences to swallow? Before Anthony Hopkins was having fava beans and a nice chianti, Hannibal Lector was played by Brian Cox in Manhunter, a 1986 film from Miami Vice's Michael Mann. A serial killer is on the loose and FBI profiler Will Graham has been called out of retirement to stop him. To do so, Graham turns to his old nemesis, the man he put in prison, Hannibal the Cannibal. With a plot that closely mirrors Lector's most iconic appearance in Silence of the Lambs, Manhunter was a failure in 1986 but is now a rediscovered favorite for Lector fans. Can this film hold a candle to Lector's later appearances? Arnie, Stuart, and Jakob review Manhunter as their first film in the Hannibal Lector retrospective series, so listen to find out!

This week is my all movie edition of the podcast. First up instead of an audio book review I get a good rant on about movie theatre piracy and the proposed idea of delayed major motion pictures by 3 months in Canada to fight it. Then it is off to the movies with my friend Rob as we give our opinion on Hannibal Rising that opened this past weekend. We discuss what we learned from the movie, who the audience is for this film and a strange resemblance of a fellow movie goer to a famous serial killer. Music on the show this week is the song Fallen Angel by DJ Topshelf and can be found at www.podsafeaudio.com. As always your comments and suggestions are welcome.

Well this week I am flying solo with the podcast and it is full of rambling goodness. My unabridged audio book review is the soon to be motion picture, Hannibal Rising by Thomas Harris as we look at the tragic origins of a serial killer. Then it is off to the future world of Primus as I do the DVD review of The New Adventures of He-Man Vol. 1 and talk about the 90's animated classic. Also news of possible future shows and my impressions of a Second Life wedding I was able to attend. Music for this week is the song Core Meltdown by George Wood and can be found at www.podsafeaudio.com. As always your comments and suggestions are welcome.
