In this episode, Masie & Stuart revisit the Wachowski Sisters' & Tom Tykwer's 2012 epic Cloud Atlas. Developing a cult-following since its initial divisive release, how does this messy conceptual adaptation of the 2004 David Mitchell novel of the same name hold up? Well, our hosts return from their autopsy with some unfortunate findings! Listen as they delve into the film's fascinating creative choices, its blatant racism, and the many strange adaptation changes made across its nearly 3 hour run time. After many technical challenges, here is Movie #4 for THREEQUELS this year! (Leave it to the robots to wreak havoc while talking about them...) The Wachowski Sisters completed their trilogy of The Matrix with today's movie The Matrix Revolutions. In 2008, the Wachowski Sisters took the bold choice to follow up the Matrix Trilogy and V for Vendetta by using the IP from the Speed Racer cartoon to make Speed Racer the movie. Critically panned upon it's arrival, it has enjoyed a second life as a cult classic. But the film is still very decisive. Will Speed Racer have enough in the tank to cruise into the Action Movie Hall of Fame, or will it's mish-mash nature work against it, sending it back to the paddock, looking for answers?

This Friday, March 31st, is Trans Day of Visibility, and we quite literally can't think of a better way to celebrate than with the author of the upcoming book "Begin Transmission: The trans allegories of The Matrix!" When screenwriter Tilly Bridges first saw The Matrix back in 1999, it spoke to her on an incredibly deep level that she couldn't fully understand until about fifteen years later, when she realized that - like the Wachowski Sisters themselves - she was trans. Tilly decided to revisit and analyze the movie that had started it all, and what began as a simple thread about The Matrix's trans allegories eventually became a timestamped handbook to the entire series! As Matrix fans, we absolutely GEEKED OUT over this conversation, and we know that you will, too! Happy Trans Day of Visibility!"Begin Transmission: The trans allegories of The Matrix" comes out on June 27th, and you can pre-order it wherever books are sold! Also, follow Tilly (and ask her all your Matrix questions!) on Twitter at @TillyBridges, and on Instagram at @heckyeahtillybridges. For all of the writing she and her wife do as a team, check out http://birdguest.com/, and for over a hundred archived Trans Tuesdays posts (plus new ones every week), go to http://tillystranstuesdays.com/!

As the Winter of Content comes to a close, we tackle the Wachowski Sisters' 2008 film adaptation of the 1960s anime Mach Gogogo! Nat & Alli are joined in the Snoysters studio by NYC playwright Victoria Provost to discuss Cloud Atlas. The Wachowski Sisters' and Tom Tykwer's 2012 adaptation of David Mitchell's 2004 novel of the same name, Cloud Atlas is a science fiction epic that blends six storylines separated by continents and centuries into the journey of a single soul/identity/consciousness. With an all-star cast all playing multiple parts, Cloud Atlas broke down the barriers between age, gender, and race, making it an audacious and justifiably controversial creative achievement. On our latest episode, we veer slightly off the post-apocalyptic path in our sci-fi / futuristic sports movie extravaganza to discuss Speed Racer! Devout Speed Racer fanboy Jed Bookout joins your regular underdogs (Jordan & Paul) to discuss the Wachowski Sisters' singular adaptation of this classic anime entry. We colloquially swerve, meander, and careen as we chat about everything good & bad about the film, including its over-the-top DayGlo color palette, Matrix Resurrections adjacent anti-corporate messaging, white-washed cast, use of vanguard digital camera techniques & technologies, pitch-perfect verisimilitude of childlike sensibilities, sugar-high/candy-coated pacing, controversial accusations of animal cruelty, and boundless imagination. Like the opening sequence in which Speed daydreams about racing by designing a flip-book of the Mach 5 zipping at hyper-speed, the Wachowskis' adaptation simulates the untainted wonder & unbridled creativity of cinema in a way that few blockbusters have captured before or since. You won't want to miss our celebration of why Speed Racer is so well-worthy of its place in the unofficial pantheon of modern cult-classics. Enjoy! Ruff Ruff!
If there is one thing we've learned, it's that you can be a messy director(s) and still produce some of the most challenging, most heartfelt, and most daring filmography that solidifies you in the annals of history. The Wachowski Sisters are a fine example of that. Join all of the vulgar dorks Paco, Terry, Jason and Evan as they bicker and reminisce about their thoughts on the brilliant, tumultuous, and ultimately ambitious array of films that Lana And Lily Wachowski had the audacity and bravery to dispense on the viewing public, warts an all, that changed the landscape of cinema for better (in our opinion).. . For episode 60 the boys are back in the studio with two new movie night reviews. We start off discussing the truly disappointing revival of a once great concept by the Wachowski Sisters, The Matrix. For Resurrections only one filmmaker returns and what a rambling mess of a return it is. Neo's back. Trinity too. There's a new Morpheus and somehow the visual effects are the Wachowski's worst yet. How? Why? Don't ask us. We literally have no idea what this movie is about. And finally a movie we did enjoy; the latest from Adam McKay, not-so absurdist disaster comedy, Don't Look Up. Along the way we discuss the landmark visionary arrival of the original Matrix, it's lasting cultural impact and how critics could possibly explain the positive reviews for Ressurections and justify the mediocre response to Don't Look Up. Crack open a couple of cold ones with us, leave a review on Apple Podcasts and let us know what you think we should review next.

With The Matrix Resurrections arriving in theaters this December, we are finally – almost 400 episodes into this damn podcast – taking our long-awaited look back at one of the single most seminal films of our lifetimes: The Wachowski Sisters' The Matrix, a movie that is either at or very near the upper threshold of how good it is possible for big Hollywood studio filmmaking to be. This is such an impossibly rich movie to discuss, with its potent, multi-valent central metaphor opening up countless avenues of conversation, including reading the film through the lenses of Marxism or transgender experience, but it's also just ridiculously entertaining and well-constructed, with terrific performances, beautiful writing, and thrilling action drawing from influences like Wuxia, martial arts, John Woo, anime, and so much more. It's some of the most fun we've ever had talking about a movie on this podcast, but it's only part of this week's episode; in this first hour, you'll also hear Jonathan's thoughts on Daniel Craig's final 007 film, No Time to Die, and the out-of-body greatness of Metroid Dread on Nintendo Switch, and Sean's final impressions of Lost Judgment after finishing the latest masterpiece from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios.Enjoy, and come back next week for episode 399 and our next Weekly Suit Gundam extravaganza with Reconguista in G! It's PRIDE Month and since we are an LGBTQ+ identified and allies podcast we are dedicating all of June to 90s LGBTQ+ topics! This week, Ally leads a review and discussion on the 1999 film The Matrix. Written and directed by the Wachowski Sisters, the Sci-Fi Action film starred Keanu Reaves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Hugo Weaving. The Wachowski Sisters, who are transgender, have discussed the film correlations to their personal experiences and for all trans people. We decided to review the film and discuss these connections and how the film is an overall metaphor for transgender experience, while sharing some personal notes as well. Plus, Andy leads a round of Do You Know It?! and Jeff rounds out the episode with a Then and Now! We hope you enjoyed joining us all June for topics centering around the LGBTQ+ community in the 90s! This week on "Hey Lady", Lindsay and Amanda ring in Pride month by talking about some pretty awesome members of the LGBTQIA+ community. First up, we bring you an activist who has been fighting for what she believes in practically her entire life, Angela Davis. Afterwards, we learn all about the siblings who brought us The Matrix, Lana and Lilly Wachowski.
Today we talk the The Wachowski Sisters.
I just wanna go back, back to 1999...so I can see The Matrix for the first time. Unplug and unwind with Jacob & Isabel as we talk about the iconic Wachowski flick The Matrix (1999). Are you a red pill or a blue pill kinda gal? There really should be a Cosmo quiz to find that one out!If you'd like to see more of us and keep up to date with future episodes then follow us here:@acasualreview@jacobpmullins@_sn_is
In this final installment of our “decades” series, Theresa, Jaime, and special guest Kevin Cozart dive into the 1990s, an era that saw LGBTQ culture burst out of the closet and into the mainstream. We reflect on the many milestones in queer literature, music, television, and film achieved in the ‘90s—from Angels in America winning the Pulitzer Prize to Ellen DeGeneres coming out on national television. Our hosts discuss how these pop culture moments shaped their own relationships to queerness and how the ‘90s have influenced contemporary LGBTQ culture. The Film Detectives bring you an educational episode delving into the cinema of the Wachowski Sisters (formerly the Wachowski Brothers) and Josef Rusnak. In this episode we discuss their films and how they've shaped science fiction during the late 1990s, The Matrix (1999) and The Thirteenth Floor (1999) . Hosted by Elliot Herman and Trevor Newlin.
On this week's show, we're joined by Cohen Bury - aka musician / DJ / producer Sixtroke - as we don our sunglasses indoors and talk about 2003's The Matrix Reloaded, directed by The Wachowski Sisters. How come the much-fabled Zion is actually kind of a dump? What new age nonsense is Morpheus selling as his side hustle? Why the hell don't more movies have people fighting with tridents? How DO you access the level select in Sonic The Hedgehog? All this, plus we try to make Siri do a fart and play a game of The Scores Of Keanu Reeves. We begin our blockbuster December by looking at two attempts to “crack” digital filmmaking, James Camerons’ record-breaker Avatar and the Wachowski Sisters’ oddball Matrix follow-up Speed Racer.
After covering books one through three of Alan Moore and David Lloyd's graphic novel V For Vendetta, we are getting into the 2005 film adaptation, directed by James McTeigue, written (and perhaps shadow-directed) by the Wachowski Sisters, and starring Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving. We'll talk about this being a rare case where the film may be better than the book, and what changed from the page to the screen. We begin our blockbuster December by looking at two attempts to “crack” digital filmmaking, James Camerons’ record-breaker Avatar and the Wachowski Sisters’ oddball Matrix follow-up Speed Racer.
Author, voice actor, audiobook narrator, and podcast host J. S. Arquin joins to discuss James McTeigue’s adaptation of Alan Moore and David Lloyd’s comic series. In episode 159, Luke, James, and J. S. discuss this classic antifa tale on the eve of the 2020 American Presidential Election. Topics: What it is like covering this project in the midst of the American election, Alan Moore’s issues with the adaptation, the Wachowski Sisters influence, Natalie Portman’s stronger version of Evey Hammond, defanged fascism, the Guy Fawkes explanation, a stronger focus on collective action, Hugo Weaving’s acting from inside the mask, a third act dramatic change, and a final vote on which was better: the comic or the movie! Do you remember the 5th of November?Jake + Mitch (finally) dive into one of the finest comic book flicks of recent memory, 'V for Vendetta'. Fifteen years later and the film still feels fresh and timely. But even thru all deserved critical acclaim and cult status, there are still a few key facets worth unpacking.- Is 'V for Vendetta' the 'Good Will Hunting' of comic book movies?- Could Natalie Portman be the MVP?- Who does this movie belong to?: The Wachowski Sisters or James McTeigueA bold, stunning, and herculean film all-in-all; the guys ultimately share the lukewarm take that 'V' delivers the goods. Also along the way, Mitch recalls tales from high school dating and Jake shares the brief history of his baldness.Be sure to rate, review, and give a listen!https://www.watchingcomics.com/HOSTS: @Thatjakeowens + @MitchRoush *WCP is a member of the GeekDad Podcast Network*
Remember, remember! The Fifth of November...for it is the beginning of Hugo Weaving Month here at Behind the Hype. To kick things off we're starting with the flawed V For Vendetta, which boasts great performances from Weaving and others (see: Creedy), while not necessarily aging all that well. It's tough to root for a a character who gaslights and tortures the female protagonist (Evey, played by Natalie Portman) in a movie with already so few women in it. Doesn't help either that the character of Evey is so passive. That said, the Wachowskis wrote the script and you can feel their hand in a lot of what transpires onscreen.
Sye and Shpak reminisce fondly on one of the first movies they saw during their queer awakenings: Bound. This goth-esque, 1996 treasure of a film by the acclaimed and queer Wachowski Sisters was undoubtedly a tight rope of sexual (and mob heist?) tension at the time. Now, as fully developed and uncloseted adults, Sye and Shpak can both say confidently, Bound holds up. Following their latest viewing, they are both learning to pick locks.
For this episode, Jayce and I discuss the first round of DC Fandome, which has now shifted to a two-day event. We break down what we're hoping to see from the film branch of the DC Universe. And what does Zack Snyder have in store with the Snyder Cut trailer that a lot of fans are anxiously awaiting? Additionally, there's some Star Wars news with some potential TV or movie spin-offs for a pair of big villains in the franchise's history. There's some big news on the Marvel movie front with Olivia Wilde being tapped to direct a film in the Spider-Verse with all signs pointing to it being Spider-Woman. We also discuss the likely delays for Marvel series on Disney+, why The Wachowski Sisters are the dummies of the week and more.
Episode 54 features several brand new segments including Giselle's YAASessment, and new showrunner Sierra gives you her thoughts on things in a new weekly installment entitled "Sierra Says." The Wachowski Sisters and The Matrix are the Yaas of the Week and Kirsten discusses Old Navy in Kirsten's Corner. Support this podcast

Content warnings: This episode discusses media which portrays trans characters experiencing suicidal ideation, murder, violence, deadnaming, transphobia, drug abuse, self-destructive behavior, and abuse. We also reference real-life attempted suicide (including a method). Follow Austin down the rabbit hole of exploring trans narratives, both subtextual and textual, in The Matrix and Imogen Binnie's Nevada. What do these very dissimilar pieces of media have in common? A lot, as it turns out, including the mythologizing of the self, the cyclical nature of coming out, and cool leather jackets. Austin feels a lot of things about navel-gazing trans characters, and Amanda defends Keanu Reeves at all costs.

Event Cinemas' In The House: Cult Film Classics presents a sci-fi game-changer feature with THE MATRIX. The Wachowski Sisters-directed film is eighteen years old in 2017 (if you can believe it!), yet still feels fresh because of the way it has continued to stay relevant in pop culture. How has it stayed timeless, in spite of the flip-phones & landlines? Does it continue to inspire its genre today? Get Into Geek's Mitch, Brendan, Rhys & Matty break it all down. Check out the program, find your nearest location and buy tickets at EventCinemas.com.au Next up is the action/comedy classic starring Eddie Murphy in his most iconic role - BEVERLY HILS COP on August 11! In 2017, Get Into Geek is once again partnering up with Event Cinemas and their In The House: Cult Film Classics festival - where you can catch one of your favourite films on the big screen or see something for the first time the way that it was meant to be seen. The guys discuss the movie as an adaptation of the '60s cartoon series, Pops Racer being a badass, misdirects, working together on Spacecano, Speed Racer’s willingness to kill other racers, and try to get to the bottom of whether or not the characters the movie is based on are meant to be white or Asian. The band's back together…After last week's interlude, franchise season continues with the Wachowskis' 1999 movie THE MATRIX. Both Rob and Sam have a different take on this film than their teenaged selves; we talk technical experiences, cinematic turning-points, and dystopian worlds. This Week's Viewing ROLLERBALL (1975): Norman Jewison, James Caan, John Houseman MEMENTO (2000): Christopher Nolan, Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss MARVEL'S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013–): Joss Whedon, Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER'S STONE (2001): Chris Columbus, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint RECOMMENDATIONS AVATAR (2009): James Cameron, Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana BOUND (1996): the Wachowskis, Jennifer Tilly, Gina Gershon GHOST IN THE SHELL (1995): Mamoru Oshii, Atsuko Tanaka, Akio Ōtsuka FIGHT CLUB (1999): David Fincher, Brad Pitt, Edward Norton FOOTNOTES First of all, Sam would like to make it clear that any mention of the Wachowskis as 'brothers' on his part was a reference to the pre-transition state in which they lived while the first film was being shot. For more on their status as Hollywood's first openly transgender directors, see here (number 2) and here. Sam starts the episode by mentioning a stunning comic about film history and technology (it's a whole lot better than that makes it sound), Edward Ross's Filmish (2015). The Wachowski Sisters have stated their indebtedness to Jean Baudrillard's Simulacres et simulation (1981) — this isn't just Sam drawing unfounded academic conclusions; Neo actually uses a copy of the book as a hiding-place at the beginning of the film, and you can read about the directors insistence that all the actors familiarised themselves with the work, here. If it really tickles your fancy, here's the original. This article has an explanation of the ‘bullet time' effect we discuss. And finally, this is a thorough analysis, including references to many interesting aspects of the film.
In this episode of the Head The Gong Podcast, I babble about job hunting, the ascent of illiberalism in progressive circles, the Wachowski brothers — er, I mean, sisters –, and the latest from the Las Cruces indie/singer-songwriter scene. dth=”560″ … Continue reading →
It is the dawn of a new era, Dear Listener. The era of the Randomizer AB1700 which holds the fate of this show in its hands. On general months, the Randomizer will be used to fill out programming except in the case of Patron or Host picks. Each of the hosts has selected a number of titles to place in the Randomizer. That being said, the Randomizer has given us Cloud Atlas to kick of April. That's right, we take a look at the underrated Wachowski/Tykwer cross-generational sci-fi film lead by Tom Hanks and Halle Berry in a number of roles. To go along with this weeks movie and the vast amount of Tom Hanks, we decide to highlight our favorite Tom Hanks films. As the show continues, we move into analysis and Dalton gets the ball rolling. This week, Dalton brings up the idea of the flexibility of race and gender; discussing how we are all people, and how the Wachowski Sisters deal with those ideas of humanity, soul, and personhood. Caleb tags in and builds off of Dalton's analysis; however, he introduces the idea of stories and they transcend time, space, and culture and can impact generations to come. Alex takes the floor after Caleb and discusses the power of music. This is a very art appreciation heavy show as Alex discusses the power of music, and analyzes how music works both in the diegesis and non-diegesis of the film. Dustin, being Dustin closes out the Analysis section by bringing up questions of philosophy and looking at it through a Nietzschian lens. And there you have it dear listener, hit play and then go forth and tell your children to tell their children about the GoodTrash GenreCast.
