This post was last updated on 4 weeks ago at 4 weeks ago One of the reasons I do this podcast is an excuse to reunite with friends and share a laugh. Amber and Kristina and I certainly accomplish this. At the same time, these two provide a lot more context to a topic I’m just beginning to understand. Enneagrams are not a new thing but one that seems to be gaining a bit more traction. This conversation will get you started I think and if you’re already into it, I know you’ll enjoy it even more. … Read the rest
Amber Teamann serves as the Director of Technology for Crandall ISD, a fast-growing district outside of Dallas, Texas. During her educational career, Amber’s comprehensive understanding of student learning has resulted in a successful blend of technology and leading. Through her campus and district level leadership, she has helped initiate instructional change district-wide, empowering teachers at all levels. Amber knows that we can all be better together and strives to make every day the very best it can be for each member of her staff and students. As an award-winning administrator, she has been a featured speaker in multiple states helping motivate, encourage, and help develop the capacity of teachers and leaders nationwide. Recognizing the power of social media, working with districts and campuses on finding their voice, and leveraging the power of connected educators has led her down a path she completely owes to the power of a professional learning network. Key Thoughts from Our Interview with Amber Teamann: Amber wastes no time diving into key strategies to stay connected with teachers and remain sensitive to the time of year and all the stresses associated with wrapping up this school year. Her wisdom will guide any listener who is looking to finish the school year strong and who wants to be mindful of the various activities that could easily send the wrong message. Listen to how Amber continually recognizes that the classroom is the most important space in every school. Amber reminds us that we always have to remember that as leaders our position precedes us as people--it is our responsibility to maintain the same level of energy and enthusiasm throughout the entire year. Don’t miss Amber’s third key strategy, which is focused on how not to overwhelm our staff. Amber identified Angela Watson as her go-to resource for herself and her teachers. There is no doubt that Amber is techie, but you don’t want to overlook her sage advice on setting boundaries with social media. One of her professional goals will resonate with any district leader who is really striving to make an impact through service. Throughout this interview, Amber displayed a level of insight and wisdom. You can’t miss her testimony on how she learned the power in identifying what she doesn’t know. Amber puts an end to this wonderful conversation by amplifying the concept that the smartest person in the room is the room itself. Lastly, we highly recommend her book Lead with Appreciation: Fostering a Culture of Gratitude. Stay tuned for our review on our ReadThisSeries. Amber’s interview is filled with very specific strategies to end the year in a supportive and encouraging way, coupled with high expectations. We are grateful that she discussed her experience as a principal and those early lessons she learned that taught her how to effectively lead. Amber Teamann is an amazing educator and a very close friend of George Couros. Right away, Amber hits viewers and listeners with a few of her “Amberisms” that work to inspire and provoke thought. The two talk in-depth about being thoughtful of the roles of teachers and how that impacts the relationships that are built at a school site. Amber shares a few of the jokes that George's daughter, Kallea, absolutely loves! Amber also reflects on her first year as a principal and school leader. Very openly, Amber shares some of the feedback that she got from her staff during her first year as an administrator. Amber also gets very real about the struggles and what she did to be there and be present and to ultimately be what her staff needed. Three Main Points: Learning from and connecting with others that have skills in different areas. The values that we share. Being the reason incredible things happen with our students. With a Bachelor's Degree in Technology and Curriculum Instruction and a Master's in Technology Integration, Amber Teamann focuses on transparent, collaborative leadership as the principal of Whitt Elementary School in Wylie, Texas. She is one of my dear friends and I am grateful to share her wisdom and energy with you today. Amber Teamann led her team of 70 students and over 600 students and their families through a global pandemic with grace. And in the absence of a pandemic playbook to help when people would panic, the core values of leadership were (and still are): Relationship Communication Authenticity Collaboration Realistic Expectations Connection Faith Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 1 Corinthians 9:24-25 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 Amber has so many resources to offer educators and administrators as we head into a brand-new school year with unknown conditions to navigate. Don't miss this #onethingseries from TheSchoolHouse302 with Principal EL. Hear about honesty, candor, growth, reflection, and strategies that you can use now as a leader. “What I do is my passion; my job is to get better at it” ~ @Principal_EL Principal EL talks about our 5Cs, core values, leadership through action, and candid feedback. He discusses getting to where he is now through data and the recognition that we need to improve ourselves for the sake of kids. He uses #satchat and social media to learn from his PLN. He tells our listeners to reflect more and be honest with yourself. Get a thought partner and use a mentor to help you grow. He wants to start a public boarding school for at-risk youth. Don’t miss him talking about this goal. He is a big fan of Dr. Covey and The 7 Habits. And, he has learned that caring for kids isn’t enough, you have to be curious about their lives outside of school…something he solidified in a conversation with Amber Teamann & Angela Watson. “If you want to wake up with determination, you have to go to bed with satisfaction” ~ Principal EL
