Looking for daily inspiration?  Get a quote from the top leaders in the industry in your inbox every morning.   Tired of outdated systems holding your attraction back? Gatemaster believes technology is part of the experience, transforming every touchpoint into an opportunity. Imagine seamless online booking, effortless mobile ordering, and data-driven insights at your fingertips. Ready to revolutionize your guest journey and maximize revenue? Power your attraction with Gatemaster. Discover the future at Gatemaster.com.   Sondra Shannon is the Chief Executive Officer, and Jake Shannon is the Chief Growth Officer of Gatemaster Technology. With decades of combined experience in operations, business strategy, and technology, Sondra and Jake lead a company that has supported attractions for over 30 years. Gatemaster started as a point-of-sale software provider and has evolved into a full-service solutions partner for attractions of all sizes. In this interview, Sondra and Jake talk about performance coaching, revenue strategy, and technology integration. Performance Coaching “Success is your duty to make sure that your business is protected and that you are growing so that you have generations to pass this on to.” Jake shares how his exposure to performance coaching through Grant Cardone led to a transformational shift in both his personal and professional life. After becoming Cardone's top-ranked coach out of 700 worldwide, Jake applied high-performance business principles to Gatemaster, helping nearly double its revenue. Sondra was so inspired by the results that she and COO Tiffany Blair began their own coaching journey to better serve the attractions they work with. They believe that coaching—more than managing—is the key to unlocking growth, developing leaders, and driving revenue across the industry. Revenue Strategy “We increased revenue by $150,000 between March and May with no new capital investment or labor investment—just strategy.” One of the most impactful themes discussed was helping attractions rethink their revenue opportunities by packaging what they already offer in new ways. Sondra explains how creating family bundles, date night deals, and themed packages for a mini-golf client led to a major uptick in revenue with no added cost. By reframing how products are presented and communicating availability clearly (without feeling like an “upsell”), Gatemaster helps clients personalize the guest journey and maximize spend from the first interaction. Technology Integration “We're now asking ourselves all the time—who's got the kind of problems we can help solve, rather than who can I sell this system to?” As a company that's been serving attractions since 1994, Gatemaster combines technical expertise with operator experience. Sondra and Jake explain how the company has evolved beyond traditional software, adding managed services to help clients navigate staffing shortages, tool fatigue, and operational complexity. Their technology is grounded in business logic and human-centered design—something that traces back to founder Steve, a chiropractor who built systems around ergonomic functionality. With many clients staying on for over a decade, the long-term relationships reflect Gatemaster's philosophy of service, customization, and genuine partnership. In this episode, John Waldmann, CEO of Homebase, shares how the 10-year-old SaaS company blew up its roadmap and rebuilt around AI—from culture to code. He walks us through the shift from 20-page PRDs to lightning-fast demos, reclaiming product leadership, and pushing teams into their “oh shit” moment with AI.We explore the leadership reckoning, cultural resistance, and practical playbook behind the transformation—and what it means for the future of SaaS, small businesses, and human-centered AI. If you're leading (or bracing for) an AI shift, this one's packed with hard-earned lessons and honest insight.Key Takeaways: You Can't Wait for Buy-In—Leadership Means Pushing the Shift — John didn't wait for excitement or alignment—he took back product leadership and forced the move toward AI. It wasn't about consensus, it was about momentum. If you're leading a team through this kind of shift, your job isn't to ask for permission—it's to create urgency before it's obvious.Speed Over Specs — Prototypes Are the New Strategy — Homebase moved from 20-page PRDs to live demos built in hours. That switch didn't just make shipping faster—it changed the way teams learn, think, and listen to customers. The takeaway? Stop planning in the abstract. Ship something real, now.Culture Is the Real AI Roadblock — The hardest part of going AI-first isn't tech—it's trust, fear, and inertia. From engineers to support teams, John had to help people reach their “oh shit” moment with AI. That's when change sticks. Until then, it's just optional homework. Leaders need to make adoption inevitable.AI Should Bring You Closer to Your Customers, Not Farther — This episode isn't about chasing shiny tools. It's about using AI to reduce the noise—so your team can focus more on humans, not less. For John, pragmatic AI is about freeing up time, getting closer to customer problems, and making the org feel smaller, not colder.LinkedIn: John Waldmann | LinkedInHomebase: All-in-one Employee Scheduling, Time Clocks, Payroll, & More | Homebase00:00 Introduction and Initial Reactions to AI00:31 Meet John Waldmann and the Story of Homebase00:53 Reinventing Homebase as an AI-First Company01:46 From PRDs to Prototypes: Building Faster, Learning Smarter05:02 How AI Is Reshaping the Customer Experience09:19 Culture Shock: Resistance, Skepticism, and AI Adoption14:03 The End of SaaS as We Know It?19:34 Leading Through Disruption: Ownership, Urgency, and Org Design25:12 Forcing the Shift: Getting Teams to Embrace AI27:50 Hiring the Unemployed—and Other Nontraditional Talent Bets28:56 Curiosity > Credentials: What to Look for in AI-Ready Teams31:57 New Expectations, OKRs, and Holding Teams Accountable37:10 Serving Small Businesses Better with AI44:52 Final Thoughts: Team Dynamics, Founder Risk, and What's Next

While acknowledging the hype surrounding AI, he maintains that we're in the early stages of a fundamental shift in how retail operates—a message he'll expand upon at the STORE2025 conference. When discussing strategy during uncertain times, Haller advises retailers to focus on action rather than extensive planning: "If you've got a million dollars to spend, spend a million dollars on 100 MVPs. Don't spend a million dollars on an AI strategy project because it's going to be out of date by the time you've done it." He recommends scenario planning with clear indicators that can guide decision-making in unpredictable environments.Looking at retail formats, Haller notes that success isn't determined by format alone but by how retailers innovate within their sector. He highlights Walmart's nimble approach to technology implementation, PepsiCo's management of their extensive logistics network, and innovative approaches from companies like Unilever and Kroger. The conversation culminates with Haller identifying four under-appreciated retail technology trends:Expanding AI beyond words, pictures, and code to work with numerical data like SKU forecasting, potentially reducing forecast error rates to low single digitsIntegrating AI with other technologies like computer vision, IoT devices, robotics, biometrics, electronic shelf labels, and retail mediaDeveloping an "operating system for AI" to manage the projected billion new applications by 2028Most critically, bringing people along on the technology journey through comprehensive training and continuous learningAttendees of STORE2025 can expect Haller to dive deeper into these insights during his keynote presentation, providing retail leaders with actionable strategies for navigating technological transformation while balancing innovation with practical implementatio Michael LeBlanc is the president and founder of M.E. Ever wonder how large manufacturing organizations balance standardization with maintaining close customer relationships? Mike MacKenzie, recently appointed at Creation, pulls back the curtain on this delicate balancing act during a revealing conversation at APEX 2025.Creation has built its reputation through acquiring smaller, customer-focused manufacturing units. Rather than imposing rigid corporate structures, they've preserved the entrepreneurial spirit and customer intimacy these businesses are known for while strategically harmonizing operations where it makes sense. "We're trying to maintain some of that intimacy but also leverage best practices and standards," MacKenzie explains, noting they're about 75% through their harmonization journey. The approach to equipment standardization particularly stands out. Instead of forcing wholesale equipment replacement across facilities, Creation allows functional equipment to naturally age out before standardizing. MacKenzie shares what they prioritize in technology partners: performance, support capability, and systems that will integrate with other tools. "We keep our assets for 10, 15 years preferably," he notes, emphasizing the need for vendors with staying power. They've successfully built communication interfaces across 90% of their equipment, though MacKenzie acknowledges the expense of creating these connections across dozens of different platforms. The conversation takes a fascinating turn when discussing Industry 4.0's unfulfilled promises and whether AI will deliver better results. MacKenzie sees potential in AI for predictive capabilities but emphasizes the need for practical applications. The vision of an "agentic AI" that could coordinate between specialized systems across production, inspection and supply chain management represents an exciting future direction that could finally deliver the digital dividend manufacturers have been waiting for. EMS@C-Level Live at APEX is sponsored by global inspection leaders Koh Young (https://www.kohyoung.com) and Creative Electron (https://creativeelectron.com)You can see video versions of all of the EMS@C-Level pods on our YouTube playlist.

This shift recognizes that partners are not just intermediaries but key drivers of innovation and customer success. By investing in training, support, and co-marketing, vendors are ensuring their partners can effectively sell, implement, and expand offerings, creating a more collaborative and mutually beneficial ecosystem.AI as a key enabler: AI is transforming the software industry by enhancing product capabilities and enabling smarter, data-driven offerings. Both vendors and partners are leveraging AI to improve customer experiences, automate tasks, and offer more personalized, efficient solutions. This technology is rapidly becoming a competitive differentiator, and vendors are embedding AI into their platforms to stay relevant in an increasingly AI-driven market.Platform ecosystems and digital marketplaces: Vendors are evolving from offering standalone products to creating expansive platforms that integrate third-party applications. This ecosystem approach drives innovation, creates new revenue streams, and provides customers with more comprehensive offerings. By fostering digital marketplaces, vendors and partners can offer tailored, scalable solutions that meet a variety of customer needs while expanding their reach and impact. The Big Quote: “AI is the new UI, and you can't have an AI just exist within a singular system. He holds an MBA in international business strategy from Maastricht University, has lectured and mentored on entrepreneurship at several universities, and is on the Industry Advisory board of RMIT Vietnam. At Vulcan he ensures that the company is moving in the right direction with a clear plan, managing tech development, finance and business strategy. Vulcan products are designed with accessibility for the end user clearly in mind, and he makes sure that this is considered at every stage of the development process, and that Vulcan is always aware of the user experience before they commit pen to paper. Rafael was raised in a village in the south of the UK, just down the road from Lord Mayor Treloars College, the largest disabled college in the country. Many of his friends as a teenager were wheelchair-bound, or heavily dependent on technology to live full lives, and their resilience and pragmatism were a deep influence. After graduating from University with a degree in Philosophy, he went to Vietnam to travel and work, teaching English for a year before returning to the UK. While in Vietnam however, he came to love the country, the culture and the career, and decided to stay.  He progressed from teaching to academic development and management, but decided after 8 years it was time to build something that would make a difference on a much larger scale. He had seen that Vietnam was a country of tremendous potential, with people who were creative, pragmatic and ambitious, but didn't yet know enough about business to do the opportunity justice, so he took an MBA. During this time he also started learning more about 3d printing and design, and becoming involved with the local maker community which opened his eyes to the technological possibilities becoming available. Shortly after graduating he met Akshay, a representative of a venture studio called Alley51, at a networking event. After talking about 3d printing, maker spaces, and entrepreneurship for several hours, Rafael was invited to pitch Alley51 his startup idea and Vulcan Augmetics was born. In the years since Vulcan was founded Rafael has continued to learn and adapt, incorporating new technology in the most efficient way, and ensuring that the company has built a brand and product that is aligned with real user requirements.
