In this episode of Mindset Monday on a Sunday, George Couros reflects on the idea that criticism provides important feedback which creates the opportunity to implement new and better ideas for learning from others. Couros considers when criticism would be most beneficial using the example of publishing a book - is it better to be criticized before the book is released or after? This leads to a few powerful stories about why it is better to criticize ourselves before others get the chance. This episode shares not only ways to take criticism but to also give criticism in a productive way. Be sure to listen or watch to understand this quote from Bill Simmons: “The biggest muscles are internet muscles.” Quotes: “The trouble with most of us is that we'd rather be ruined by praise than saved by criticism.” — Norman Vincent Peale “You don't have to listen to all criticism.” - George Couros “Let me never fall into the vulgar mistake of dreaming that I am persecuted whenever I am contradicted.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson Links: The Growth Mindset Coach (book on Amazon) - https://www.amazon.com/Growth-Mindset-Coach-Month-Month-ebook/dp/B01IMJVMIO The Innovator's Mindset (book on Amazon) - https://www.amazon.com/Innovators-Mindset-Empower-Learning-Creativity/dp/0986155497 Innovate Inside the Box - https://www.amazon.com/Innovate-Inside-Box-Empowering-Innovators/dp/1948334127 Platinum Rule (blog post) - https://georgecouros.ca/blog/archives/13707 __________________________________________ Please share your thoughts with us on Twitter or Instagram at #InnovatorsMindset. “The Innovator's mindset can be defined as the belief that the abilities, intelligence, and talents are developed so that they lead to the creation of new and better ideas. ” - Excerpt From The Innovator's Mindset, George Couros Couros begins this second episode of Mindset Monday with a brief reflection on last week's episode about effort. This week, Couros focuses on obstacles. Throughout this episode of Mindset Monday, Couros shares ways he has “bounced forward.” Quotes: “People who cultivate a growth mindset are more resilient in the face of setbacks or obstacles. The growth mindset, after all, relishes the process of learning, not achievement” - The Growth Mindset Coach, Annie Brock & Heather Hundley “By altering the way we look at the challenges above (and many others that I haven't listed), we can shift from a mindset of obstacles to one of opportunities. This is the embodiment of the Innovator's Mindset.” - Couros, George; Novak, Katie, Innovate Inside the Box: Empowering Learners Through UDL and the Innovator's Mindset Resilience doesn't just mean getting back to normal after facing a difficult situation. It means learning from the process in order to become stronger and better at tackling the next challenge.”- Donna Volpitta Links: The Growth Mindset Coach (book on Amazon) - https://www.amazon.com/Growth-Mindset-Coach-Month-Month-ebook/dp/B01IMJVMIO The Innovator's Mindset (book on Amazon) - https://www.amazon.com/Innovators-Mindset-Empower-Learning-Creativity/dp/0986155497 Innovate Inside the Box - https://www.amazon.com/Innovate-Inside-Box-Empowering-Innovators/dp/1948334127 __________________________________________ Please share your thoughts with us on Twitter or Instagram at #InnovatorsMindset. This episode is reviewing The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. "The Happiness Project" by Gretchen Rubin explores her year-long quest to increase her overall happiness and well-being. Rubin identifies various areas of her life that she believes are essential for happiness, including relationships, career, and physical health. Each month, she focuses on a specific theme and sets goals and resolutions to improve that area of her life. Through her personal experiences, Rubin offers practical tips and insights for readers to apply to their own lives. George Couros asks the question, are happiness and learning connected in school, and how would interpret that connection? Share your thoughts in the comments below and remember to like and subscribe on YouTube! Quotes: “Studies show that in a phenomenon called emotional contagion, we unconsciously catch emotions from other people, whether good mood, whether in a good mood or bad ones. Taking the time to be silly means that we're infecting one another with good cheer, and people who enjoy silliness are one-third more likely to be happy.” - Gretchen Rubin, The Happiness Project “The ‘fundamental attribution error' is a psychological phenomenon in which we tend to view other people's actions as reflections of their characters and to overlook the power of the situation to influence their actions, whereas, with ourselves, we recognize the pressures of circumstance. When other people's cell phones ring during a movie, it's because they're inconsiderate boors; if my cell phone rings during a movie, it's because I need to be able to take a call from the babysitter. I tried to remember not to judge people harshly, especially on the first or second encounter. Their actions might not reveal their enduring character but instead reflect some situation they find themselves in.” “Samuel Butler wrote, ‘Happiness and misery consist in a progression towards better or worse; it does not matter how high up or low down you are, it depends not on this, but on the direction in which you are tending.' “ Links: Gretchen Rubin Website - https://gretchenrubin.com/books/the-happiness-project/ James Clear, Atomic Habits - https://jamesclear.com/atomic-habits Innovate Inside the Box (book on Amazon) - https://www.amazon.com/Innovate-Inside-Box-Empowering-Innovators/dp/1948334127 __________________________________________ Please share your thoughts with us on Twitter or Instagram at #InnovatorsMindset. This episode is reviewing The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz, a self-help book that explores the power of personal agreements and how they shape our reality. The book is based on ancient Toltec wisdom and presents four agreements that can help readers transform their lives: Be impeccable with your word. This agreement encourages honesty and integrity in communication, both with oneself and others. Don't take anything personally. This agreement advises readers to recognize that other people's actions and words are not about them, but rather about their own beliefs and experiences. Don't make assumptions. This agreement encourages readers to ask questions and seek clarification rather than making assumptions about other people's thoughts and intentions. Always do your best. This agreement encourages readers to strive for excellence and to do their best in all endeavors, even when they are not feeling their best. Overall, The Four Agreements is a thought-provoking and practical guide that can help readers improve their relationships, communication, and overall well-being. It is well-written and easy to understand, making it a valuable resource for anyone looking to make positive changes in their life. Have a book that you would recommend? Be sure to add the title in the comments below! Quotes & Thoughts: "How many times do we pay for one mistake? The answer is thousands of times. The human is the only animal on earth that pays a thousand times for the same mistake. The rest of the animals pay once for every mistake they make. But not us. We have a powerful memory. We make a mistake, we judge ourselves, we find ourselves guilty, and we punish ourselves. If justice exists, then that was enough; we don't need to do it again. But every time we remember, we judge ourselves again, we are guilty again, and we punish ourselves again, and again, and again." It is okay to regret past decisions, but not to dwell on them. What is not okay is not learning and growing from those situations. “In your whole life nobody has ever abused you more than you have abused yourself. And the limit of your self-abuse is exactly the limit that you will tolerate from someone else. If someone abuses you a little more than you abuse yourself, you will probably walk away from that person. But if someone abuses you a little less than you abuse yourself, you will probably stay in the relationship and tolerate it endlessly.” What we tolerate from ourselves is what we tolerate at our places of work and in our relationships. “Do not be concerned about the future; keep your attention on today, and stay in the present moment. Just live one day at a time. Always do your best to keep these agreements, and soon it will be easy for you. Today is the beginning of a new dream.” Focus on doing your best today and the future will take care of itself. “If you want to get the most out of the things you consume, think about how you make your own connection to that content.” - George Couros Description & Time Codes: 0:00 Episode Intro 2:10 Intro 2:19 #MindsetMonday S3 Ep3 - Discipline > Motivation 7:18 Stephanie Smith 10:45 Greg Bagby 14:46 Brian Faulkner 17:52 Becca Ribbing #MindsetMonday S3 Ep3 - Discipline > Motivation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moaYA9lXBFM In this episode, George Couros reflects on how he stays motivated. Couros shares three great ideas that work to keep him motivated. The first story in this episode shares a reflection on what happens when things do not go the way we plan and how we can maintain our motivation even when the unexpected occurs. This episode shares some powerful questions that we can ask ourselves and some ideas for how to become more disciplined. Lessons on Going From Admin Back to the Classroom - A Convo with Stephanie Smith https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5V8vEAg-z5E Stephanie Smith reflects on her time as an administrator turned teacher and how she maintains a focus on relationships and communication. Her reflections on her time in both positions serve as a powerful reminder about being open to dialogue when there are questions and to communicate. Hear this and more in the full episode of The Innovator's Mindset Podcast: Lessons on Going From Admin Back to the Classroom - A Convo with Stephanie Smith! Learning by Example - A Convo with Greg Bagby https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgavCLUhLRg One of George Couros' main takeaways from this episode was a story from Greg Bagby about his father and how he sees the world. We often talk about the idea of leading by example, but we can also talk about the idea of learning by example. Learning by example means that we demonstrate the learning process and the struggle but also show how we continuously move forward. This episode of The Innovator's Mindset Podcast with Greg Bagby is a great reminder to be the example of what we want to see in kids. The Joy of Our Students - A Convo with Brian Faulkner https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2gEN7OicMI George Couros shares a reflection on a story he learned when he taught a Stephen Covey workshop. He and Brian Faulkner have a conversation about what it means to be a leader and how important it is to lead by example. Finding Clarity - A Podcast with Becca Ribbing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQ2EPkabpyQ When do you decide when this is something that you need to stick with and when do you decide to take a different direction? Becca Ribbing talks about starting something new, creating connections, and thinking in a new way. Ribbing reflects how we can recognize when something is not working while understanding that, at the beginning, it will be a challenge and there will be a learning curve. Ribbing shares how the work can get easier the more we do it and how we need to recognize the struggle at the beginning of the path. You can find this book, and past book reviews here on Amazon: https://a.co/3wuNo8d In this episode of Epic Book Reviews, George Couros reviews the book Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss and Tahl Raz. Voss is an FBI Hostage Negotiator who shares theories and tools he has learned throughout his negotiations and then shares case studies where these theories were put into practice. In this book, Voss shares what negotiation techniques worked and what did not work while also explaining why the resulting outcome occurred. Couros reviews this book and shares his own key takeaways as he reflects on his most recent reading! Quotes & Thoughts: “…Leverage isn't the same thing as power.” - Chris Voss Thoughts: If you are the superintendent of a school district, you might have power. But if you end up on a deserted island and are dying of thirst, the one with water has leverage. “…empathy is not about being nice or agreeing with the other side. It's about understanding them. Empathy helps us learn the position the enemy is in, why their actions make sense (to them), and what might move them.” - Chris Voss Thoughts: Calling people that don't agree with you “crazy.” Does that make them less crazy? “Splitting the difference is wearing one black and one brown shoe, so don't compromise. Meeting halfway often leads to bad deals for both sides.” - Chris Voss Thoughts: Moving a program out of our school that wasn't technically a part of the school. “What about this doesn't work for you?" and you'll probably trigger quite a bit of useful information from your counterpart.” - Chris Voss Thoughts: When working with parents and teacher leaders. Please leave your big learning from 2022 in the comments below! I would love to hear from you! This is the final "non-compilation" podcast for season 3 and the year of 2022. I wanted to put together some of my big takeaways, in a raw, and unfiltered manner. I felt pretty vulnerable in sharing some of these things, so I hope you can find them of value. Here were my 4 big takeaways from the year that I expand more on in the podcast. 1. Initiate change for yourself before it is done to you. 2. Sometimes advice is given by others based not on what is best for you but what makes others feel most comfortable. 3. Learn the importance of addition through subtraction. 4. Be in the moment and be present. Embrace where you are so that you can be better to yourself and others. More on each in the podcast! I look forward to hearing you takeaway from the year as well. Have a great end to your year! George Couros __________________________________________ Please share your thoughts with us on Twitter or Instagram at #InnovatorsMindset. If you are the only person on your team that is still willing to give it your best, you are probably on the wrong team." -Millicent Dickey Links: Millicent Dickey Twitter - https://twitter.com/mwdickey Millicent Dickey LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/millicent-dickey-32592b6/ Please share your thoughts with us on Twitter or Instagram at #InnovatorsMindset. George Couros starts this podcast by talking about being there for the moments, small and big, consistently. Following this brief reminder, Couros goes into the routines he has both when traveling and at home. During this intro, he shares a pet peeve that he has about not putting the weights where they belong while at the gym. This makes it harder for the person after them to find what they need - and in some cases, the weights may be too heavy for someone after them to pick up. There are some locations that George has visited where the people actually put their weights back where they belong on a consistent basis - that is part of the gym's culture. This connects to taking on the responsibility and not simply doing only a portion of it, but actually following through with the task to the end and doing it in a way that embodies the culture you want to create at your school site. Quotes: "Are you leaving the responsibility of the thing you utilize for the next person to pick up after you?" "If you have the ability to take those things out, do you take the opportunity to put those things back?" “Our actions and what we model have the biggest impact.” Please share your thoughts with us on Twitter or Instagram at #InnovatorsMindset.
