It is not bad to be rich, but so many are bad at being rich. It takes intention and wisdom to know how to be good and rich, so for four weeks we will be exploring the truths in 1 Timothy 6:17-19 to grow as faithful and joyful stewards. Not only can we use our wealth to bless others, but through generosity we can bless ourselves by taking hold of the life that is truly life! ----------------------- WELCOME Find a time and attend a service with us: https://thehills.org/visit RESOURCES For more messages in the Lets Talk About Mental Health series checkout: thehills.org/mental-health For counseling and taking the next step to get help checkout: https://thehills.org/counseling NEXT STEPS Have you made a decision to follow Jesus? On our third week of our series "Choices", Pastor Steve challenges us through a message called "I Choose Generosity." How much more can we contribute to God's Kingdom when we become more generous with our time, touch, talents, and treasures?
Matthew 6:19-34 Money and possessions can easily gain power over us. Money has this power because it is sly and deceptive so you can be greedy and not know it when we compare ourselves to others. It is the unwavering trust in God alone that sets us free from power earthly treasures have over us so we can build up treasures that matter. Key Verse: No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. 20 November, 2022 Cycle of Grace with Pastor Steve Rasmussen This is the last in our Generosity Series.
This week, Pastor Joe continues our Generosity Series, More of One Small Thing, by looking at the story of Joseph in Genesis 41:46-57 and the choices we make when it comes to our finances. Why is it so hard for the church to talk about money? Perhaps, we should start talking about the impact we have in the world!
Pastor Paul preaches from Habakkuk 3:17-19 and Deuteronomy 26:1-11. It's possible to have joy even when things in life are going wrong. When God is center in our lives, we always give Him our best, which is the principle of the Old Testament “Firstfruits.” So when God is first in our lives, even in the toughest of economic times we are able to give sacrificially, joyfully, and graciously. Key Verse: Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior. (Habakkuk 3:17-18) Watch the full service on our YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/HjYUceD6id4
This week's talk comes from 2 Corinthians 8:8-15; 9:6-12. The Corinth church was well off and Paul was trying to raise a collection for the poor church in Jerusalem. Paul wants them to want to give generously but they seem unwilling from their heart to do so. Giving comes from joy that flows from a loving heart that has been surrendered to God. God takes our heart and helps us to see blessings that come when we join with His work in giving. Key Verse: Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. Dave Linn doesn't "believe" that ordinary people can change the world, he KNOWS it. As Co-founder and COO of The Generosity Series, he has shared the power and profit of Peer-to-Peer fundraising with 100s of nonprofits and 1000s of fundraisers. A husband, father, grandfather, educator, board member, beer & coffee snob, published author, and corny-joke creator, purveyor & recycler, Dave is often called upon to present at seminars and conferences, and his Gratitude Workshop series has earned him the strange title of "The Gratitude Dude". In this episode, Pastor Joe wraps up our latest Generosity Series, Our Money Story; by turning to John 21:1-19 and the word, "Restore". How might we understand how Jesus restores us so that we might live into God's call to being disciples in our broken world?
This week, we continue our Generosity Series, Our Money Story, with Rev. Kristin Joyner, Pastor of Community Engagement at Bothell United Methodist Church, preaching on "Re-Imagine". Over the past 15 years, Dr. Jody Carrington has assessed, treated, educated, and empowered some of our most vulnerable and precious souls on the planet. She is a child psychologist by trade, but Jody rarely treats kids. The answer lies, she believes, in the people who hold them. Especially when kids have experienced trauma, that’s when they need big people the most. Some of her favorites include educators, parents, first responders, and foster parents. Jody has shifted the way they think and feel about the holy work that they do. Before Jody started her own practice and speaking across the country, she worked at the Alberta Children’s Hospital on the inpatient and day treatment units where she held families with some of the difficult stories. They taught her the most important lesson: we are wired to do hard things. We can handle those hard things so much easier when we remember this: we are wired for connection. This all started when Jody received her Bachelor of Arts with Distinction from the University of Alberta. She completed a year-long internship with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police during that time and worked alongside families struggling with chronic illness at the Ronald McDonald House. She received her Master’s degree in Psychology at the University of Regina and completed her Ph.D. there as well, before completing her residency in Nova Scotia. Her first book, Kids These Days: A Game Plan for (Re)Connecting with those we Teach, Lead & Love, came out in 2019 and sold 20,000 copies in just three months. It is now on Amazon’s Best Sellers List. In this episode, Dr. Jody shares with us many insights about the importance of taking care of those who hold our children as she masterfully helps us see as she calls it that we are walking one another home in this life. She helps us understand the importance of connecting with others in our lives, and her message empowers listeners to visualize how we too can be more generous with our time and attention. She lit me up with this interview, friends, and her work inspires me a great deal. Stick around to the end of this episode for a generous offer to see both Jody and me in person in June! Welcome back to the In AWE Podcast and our series on Generosity. This series continues to amaze me in its depth, and I cannot wait to share the incredible story from today’s episode with you. Shelly Biessel is a mother of two, educator, and co-founder of Love Conquers Violence, a Minneapolis based non-profit with a powerful mission to end domestic violence in their community. Shelly and her husband, Nick co-founded Love Conquers Violence after they lost tragically Nick’s sister to a domestic abuse-related homicide. Through the organization, they keep Natalie Biessel’s voice alive, impacting those suffering through domestic violence, as well as honoring Natalie’s spirit in the ways they support others pursuing service through the medical field as Natalie was when she died. Shelly’s dedication to the mission in her message is insanely inspiring to me, and the generosity of her passionate spirit shows us how any tragedy can be used and nothing has to be wasted. I am in awe of this incredible woman and the way she and her husband keep Natalie's voice alive through loving service to others. I am honored to share with you Shelly Biessel's generosity story. Pastor Doug came back to our Spirit of Generosity Series by warning us of the dangers of being preoccupied and controlled by money. If our hearts are not right we can allow money to dictate how we invest, how we love, and what we value. May Jesus change our hearts to severe the bondage that comes when we allow money to control us.
Pastor Doug continued in our Spirit of Generosity Series by sharing in the Word about what it looks like to be generous in our hospitality. If we invite other into our lives and seek their comfort and blessing we show them the love of Christ and we win the right to speak truth into their life.

Join Michael Bayne as he closes out this series on Generosity by asking the question, “Why should I give to the church?”. What we learn when we look at Scripture is that our giving should be fueled by our belief! Scriptures: Matthew 16: 13-19 Keywords: Gracious, Giving, Generosity, Church, Excell
God uses a generous heart. When we freely give our lives, our money and our resources to God he does amazing things with them. Unfortunately, that can be very difficult for us to do. Join Daron Dickens as he provides some practical help for moving to a place where we can live with a generous heart. Scriptures: 1 Timothy 6: 9-10 & 17-19 Keywords: generous heart, finances, money, budget, giving, practical, tips, tithe, generosity, help
It’s easy to want to be generous but it’s so difficult to put generosity into action. How do we become people who sacrificially give when we want to protect and guard what we have? Join Michael Bayne as he helps us understand how to cultivate generosity in our lives. Scriptures: Matthew 6:19-21 & 31-33 Keywords: giving, sacrifice, generosity, invest, serve, priority
We all need money but many times it dominates and controls our lives. We never seem to have enough and we always want more. What could happen if we controlled the chaos and stopped allowing money to define our lives? Join Michael Bayne as he looks at the teachings of Jesus and the call to live generous, sacrificial lives. Scriptures: Luke 21:1-4 Keywords: money, giving, sacrifice, faith, generosity, greed
Dr. Gene Selander wraps up the Generosity Series with "Why We Give". The focus is why we give... or why not. If we know why we are giving but haven't figured out how to do it yet, we will figure it out. The two truths of generosity are: I. We are generous because we know who God is. II. We are generous because we know who we are in relation to God. He is the owner and creator of everything and we are the temporary managers or stewards of what He has given us. We are to "employ and enjoy" everything He has given us, yet we need to be responsible and honoring and be generous with others. It is healthy to give. We benefit by doing good because it makes a difference in all our lives, it expresses who God is as the owner and us as the stewards and it blesses our souls and quality of our lives. We should give all we can. We give because He gave us everything - His only Son. Winston Churchill said, "You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give." Give it all so that others may see Christ in us.
Dr. Gene Selander continues with the Generosity Series explaining the difference between 'Worldly Giving' and 'Kingdom Generosity'. The verses tell about the poor widow who gave what she had. There are: I. Three things about God: a. Interested in our giving. b. Interested in our attitude. c. Interested in our generosity. II. Three things about the People: a. They gave as well. b. Their gifts were appreciated. c. Their gifts were motivated by obedience. III. Three things about the Woman: a. More interested in others. b. More interested in faith. c. More interested in total surrender. She was completely unselfish and more interested in surrendering to God and she trusted and believed in Him. A great example of Kingdom Generosity - giving it all!
