Lucy West has been a mover and shaker in the world of education for over 30 years. Since the mid-nineties Ms. West has been at the forefront of the movement to increase classroom discourse and infuse it with rigor and equity. Ms. West began her career in New York City Public Schools as a second grade teacher. Later, while serving the city as the Director of Mathematics for Community School District 2, Lucy invented a capacity building process for cultivating teacher leaders and highly-skilled mathematics coaches that was the inspiration for other coaching initiatives in districts as far reaching as Boston and San Diego. As the Deputy Superintendent of Region 9 in NYC (a Region serving close to 200 schools), she designed systems to scale up the coaching model she had crafted for District 2 and brokered collaborations that brought universities into partnership with the Region. Her partnership work with Bank Street College resulted in bringing dozens of highly-skilled teachers into the South Bronx-- one of the nation’s poorest “hard-to- staff” congressional districts. Lucy also served as a teacher supervisor with a Columbia University Professional Development School, an instructor within Bank Street College, and an Assistant Principal of PS 234 (one of NYC’s most successful and acclaimed schools). Kermit's first three years in Pflugerville were spent at the middle school, which was a low performing school at that time, and just two years later, Kermit led that school to achieve the maximum of 7 different distinctions. Kermit's work has now led him to another underachieving school, where he is currently working to create another success story. Kermit is a 1992 graduate of Baylor University with a degree in Accounting, a 2007 Master’s Graduate from Tarleton State University, and a second year doctoral student at the University of Texas at Austin. “Principal’s Blog” by Kermit Ward: http://www.pfisd.net/domain/896 Kermit’s article in the Waco Tribune in regard to high-stakes testing: http://www.wacotrib.com/opinion/columns/guest_columns/kermit-ward-guest-columnist-high-stakes-testing-better-prepares-our/article_647b18e4-13fd-58a8-8ebf-2f2841bef490.html An article in Statesman in regard to Kermit’s attitude toward growth, learning, and overcoming limiting beliefs: http://www.statesman.com/news/news/local/connally-high-principal-kermit-ward-remains-studen/nq6CT/ About EducatorsLead: Educators Lead is a podcast created to help launch educators into the next level of leadership. Dr. Greg Franklin is the superintendent of the Tustin Unified School District in Southern California. Dr. Franklin is passionate about preparing all students to succeed in the global workforce through rigorous and engaging instruction, real-world applications, and the integration of technology. Among his accomplishments, Dr. Franklin was named California and Orange County Superintendent of the Year for 2014. In addition, Dr. Franklin is president of the Association of California School Administrators State Superintendents Council and adjunct faculty at the University of Southern California. Quote Greg mentioned from Haim Ginot regarding the power of a teacher: “I’ve come to a frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element in the classroom. It’s my personal approach that creates the climate. It’s my daily mood that makes the weather. As a teacher, I possess a tremendous power to make a child’s life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated and a child humanized or de-humanized.” – Haim Ginot His Name is Today by Gabriela Mistral “We are guilty of many errors and many faults, But our worst crime is abandoning the children, Neglecting the fountain of life. Many of the things we need can wait, The child cannot wait. Right now is the time his bones are being formed, His blood is being made, And his senses are being developed. To him we cannot answer ‘tomorrow’ His name is Today.” About EducatorsLead: Educators Lead is a podcast created to help launch educators into the next level of leadership.
