POPULARITY
What did it mean to be bought, sold, and sexually exploited in the ancient world? In this powerful episode of Two Friends Talk History, Zofia is joined by doctoral candidate Florence Felsheim to explore the hidden realities of sexual trafficking in ancient Greece and Rome. Drawing on literary texts, archaeological evidence, and cognitive science, Florence unpacks how systems of enslavement and exploitation operated in societies often romanticized in popular culture. We examine the scale of the ancient slave trade, the gendered dimensions of exploitation, and how enslaved women were commodified—expected to provide not just labor, but sexual access. From Roman brothels to banquet halls, the episode reveals how normalized sexual violence was embedded in the fabric of ancient daily life.As part of Sexual Violence Awareness Month, this conversation sheds light on uncomfortable histories, connecting past systems of abuse to present-day conversations on power, consent, and human dignity. Listener discretion is advised.

Hey Collectors! On this episode of the Hoardganize Podcast I discuss how to declutter your kitchen of potentially toxic items. Below are some of the utensils and cookware that may contain chemicals that are harmful to you and your family (don't forget your fur kids either). Utensils & Cookware That May Contain Chemicals 1. Nonstick Cookware (Teflon) Chemical: PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) and formerly PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) Risk: At high temperatures (over 500°F), nonstick coatings can break down and release toxic fumes. Tip: Use nonstick only on low/medium heat, avoid scratched pans, or switch to ceramic-coated alternatives. 2. Plastic Utensils & Storage Chemical: BPA, phthalates, and other plasticizers Risk: Heat (like dishwashers or microwaving) can cause plastics to leach these into food. Tip: Use BPA-free plastics, or switch to glass, stainless steel, or silicone. 3. Aluminum Cookware (especially uncoated) Chemical: Aluminum Risk: Acidic foods (like tomato sauce) can cause leaching; long-term exposure to aluminum is under investigation for health impacts. Tip: Use anodized aluminum or switch to stainless steel. 4. Copper Cookware Chemical: Copper Risk: Can leach into food if not lined (usually with stainless steel or tin). Too much copper can be toxic. Tip: Use only lined copper cookware. 5. Melamine Dishes Chemical: Melamine Risk: Can leach into food, especially when microwaved or used with hot foods. Tip: Avoid microwaving melamine and use ceramic/glass for heating. Remember, you can always see our episodes in person, on our youtube channel!

Episode #115: Today's "Quick Friendship Tip" is about how to capture the attitude and spirit of that special "freshman energy" apparent on any college campus in the first three weeks of school when making new friends as an adult. There is something real happening in that freshman year, specifically the first three weeks, that is magical for friend making. I saw it while dropping off my son for his freshmen year of college in August, and I remember it from my own freshmen year. I'm grateful to former guest, Gretchen Rubin, (who also recently dropped off a child for freshmen year) for sharing a 2015 NYT article in her newsletter by Nicholas A Christakis called "Making Friends in New Places." Christakis described in more detail what exactly is happening in those first three weeks. I did not imagine it just a few months ago during the initial college move in days. While adult life cannot replicate those three weeks in exactly the same way, I have some ideas about how we can take what's essential about that vulnerable time and use it to our advantage as adults when we're in periods of having to make new friends or just wanting to get out of a friend rut. In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer Podcast, Jim and Tyson interview Stephen Hamilton, a prominent criminal defense attorney from Texas. Stephen shares his journey from solo practitioner to managing a multi-office firm.Stephen shares the challenges and strategies that exist when scaling a firm. One of the strategies that is needed to scale is to get rid of the micromanager mindset. As law firm owners, it can be tough to remove yourself from professional situations or feel you are the face of the firm. Stephen emphasizes the need for owners to think about the people you need to make the firm stronger and more successful. From there, it is important to let them do the work and come to you when they need help. Many firm owners might consider opening multiple offices, which can be very difficult. Stephen speaks on the best way to go about opening multiple firms. One thing to keep in mind is deciding on a universal system of doing things across all firms. Opening a second, third or fourth firm that are under the same name but doing different things will not lead to good work and successful cases. It is important to think about the current structure you have and how to expand that to another site.Listen in to learn more!Jim's Hack: The value of spot checking and having someone in the firm who takes this task on to ensure procedures and processes are followed.Stephen's Tip: Use the app Fathom, which is a notetaker. Watch the YouTube version of this episode HEREAre you looking to scale your law firm? In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer Podcast, hosts Jim Hacking and Tyson Mutrux engage in a conversation with Dawn Smith, a managing partner at a law firm specializing in nursing home litigation. Dawn shares her unconventional journey to becoming a lawyer and some of the things she has learned.Dawn provides some insights on her learnings when she scaled her law firm. One of these learnings was the importance of having defined written processes. Hiring new attorneys means different perspectives and ways of doing things. Without a defined process, it is easy for things to get out of hand and for attorneys to handle things their own way that don't align with the vision of the firm. Some simple processes that should be outlined are how demand letters are written and how mediation sessions are handled.Since practicing law can have an emotional toll, Dawn speaks to the importance of supporting staff when handling tough cases. It is crucial to have open dialogue with those who are hearing horrific cases over and over. Building a culture of openness within a firm is key to making sure the mental health of staff is always prioritized and people are not negatively affected.Take a listen!Jim's Hack: Read the book “The 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership” which talks about taking radical responsibility and learning through curiosity. Watch the YouTube version of this episode HEREAre you a law firm owner who needs to market their firm better? In this insightful episode of the Maximum Lawyer Podcast, Jim and Tyson engage with Vaidas and Steve from RizeUp Media to explore the intricacies of selecting a digital marketing agency. When searching for a marketing agency, it is important to find one that aligns with your goals as a firm. Vaidas and Steve share a few red flags to look out for and some things to consider. One red flag is working with a company that does not truly understand the vision of a law firm and what the firm needs from a marketing standpoint. Marketing a firm involves a lot of things, including knowing who your audience is and where they are located. A good marketing agency is going to do the research and work with you to determine these factors. When it comes to the relationship between a firm and a vendor, like a marketing agency, communication is key to a successful partnership and results that will make the firm money. For a firm it is important to let your partner know what is and isn't working. To maintain consistent communication, set up recurring meetings for 15-30 minutes to go over how things are going for the firm as well as strategizing if a change is needed.Take a listen to learn more!Jim's Hack: Using the phrase “happy and grateful” which for him means something needs to get taken care of.Vaidas's Tip: is to use the app Loom, which is a recording tool and can be utilized to record short videos or snippets to send to people.Steve's Hack: is using legal directories as an analytics tool and seeing how many calls you get from individuals who have found your firm through a directory.Tyson's Tip: Use a Notebook LM which is a virtual AI assistant. After infamously declaring on his podcast that "spaghetti sucks," Sporkful host Dan Pashman set about creating what he felt was the Platonic ideal of a pasta shape. Once he'd achieved that, though, he realized that his pasta needed a sauce that was its equal. He joins us to discuss his new cookbook, Anything's Pastable, and take calls from listeners. *This segment is guest-hosted by Matt Katz RECIPE FOR CACIO E PEPE E CHILI CRISP (photo below) SERVES 4 TO 6 • TOTAL TIME: 35 MINUTES • DEVELOPED WITH JAMES PARK 2 tablespoons kosher salt 1 tablespoon coarsely cracked black peppercorns (see tip) 2 teaspoons cracked Sichuan peppercorns (optional, see note) 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 3 tablespoons Lao Gan Ma chili crisp, plus more for serving 1 pound mafalde pasta (a.k.a. mafaldine or riccia; or use bucatini, pici, or cascatelli) 1 cup (4 ounces) finely grated Pecorino Romano, plus more for serving Bring 4 quarts of water and the salt to a boil in a large pot. Toast the black and Sichuan peppercorns, if using, in a large, high-sided skillet over medium-low heat, shaking the pan frequently, until fragrant, 1 to 2 minutes; transfer to a bowl, reserving the skillet. Melt the butter in the reserved skillet over medium-low heat. Add 2 teaspoons of the pepper mixture and cook, stirring, until the butter just begins to brown, 1 to 2 minutes. Add the chili crisp and cook, stirring occasionally, until the chili flakes become fragrant and sizzle, 2 to 3 minutes; remove the pan from the heat. (At this point the sauce can sit, covered, for up to 2 hours.) Add the pasta to the boiling water and cook for 1 minute less than the low end of the package instructions. Meanwhile, place the Pecorino in a large heatproof bowl and set aside. A few minutes before the pasta is done, transfer 1/2 cup of the pasta cooking water to the bowl with the Pecorino and whisk until no lumps remain. Use tongs to transfer the pasta directly to the skillet and place it over medium-high heat. Cook, stirring constantly, until any water has evaporated and the pasta is evenly coated with the chili mixture, 1 to 2 minutes. Immediately transfer the pasta to the bowl with the cheese mixture, scraping out the skillet. Add 1/4 cup of the pasta water and use the tongs to rapidly toss everything together until the pasta is well coated and the cheese is dissolved. (There should be extra sauce pooling in the bowl at first, but it should all cling to the pasta after 1 to 2 minutes of stirring. If the sauce looks too thick after 1 minute, add more pasta water 1 tablespoon at a time until smooth and creamy.) Transfer the pasta to a serving dish or individual bowls, sprinkle with more Pecorino and the remaining pepper mixture, and serve with more chili crisp, if desired. TIP: Use a mortar and pestle, rolling pin, or the bottom of a pot or pan to crack whole black peppercorns (and Sichuan peppercorns, if using) into chunks. You want them coarser than if you had ground them in a pepper mill or spice grinder. NOTE: You don't have to use the Sichuan peppercorns to get great results, but they do add a depth to the heat that I think takes this dish to the next level. Plus you'll need them to make Mapo Tofu Cascatelli (page 165), my all-time favorite way to have cascatelli! Cacio e Pepe e Chili Crisp (Dan Liberti)

Kanban boards are used in the project management space and can be used as a tool to outline work. It is often used in scrum meetings among teams to break down goals. For example, if a team is working on a project to streamline the intake process, a Kanban board can be used to visualize how that process can go using columns and cards. They are meant to allow users to see workflows and identify areas where there is a roadblock. It can be customized to the likeness of any team!John shares some of the templates he has created that can help law firms succeed. One is a litigation workflow, which can be used to help outline a case. There is a column for intake and research, one for strategy, one for mediation/negotiation and then one for the trial process. This lays out the whole case in front of you which when visualized can help see the whole picture. The transactional template is similar but might not include a trial phase.John provides a few examples of different types of Kanban boards. One of them is BusinessMap, which is great for large firms due to the amount of users that can utilize it at once. KanbanZone is another tool that is great for lawyers as there are functionalities that work well for the type of work lawyers do. Choose a Kanban board that works for your firm to maximize its great benefits!Listen in to learn more from John Grant!Jim's Hack: Read the book “10 X is Better than 2 X”, by Dan Sullivan and Benjamin Hardy. There is a concept in the book about how we ease ourselves out of the day to day practice of the firm by using free days.John's Tip: Make policies explicit. It is not just about what the policy is and what I want you to do, but getting to the why behind the policy. Tyson's Tip: Use sticky notes to start putting stuff on the walls as a starting ground.2:59 The Kanban methodology and its application in law firms7:36 The benefits of using visual Kanban boards to manage tasks12:51 Recommendations for tools like BusinessMap and Kanban Zone 15:46 Best practices for setting up a Kanban board for litigationConnect with John:Website FacebookLinkedin Tune in to today's episode and checkout the full show notes here.

Hobson and Greg are working with volunteers to develop an open source AI that we call Qary (QA for question answering). We're adding plugins to support open source large language models (LLMs) like GPT-2 and Llama2. Here's how you can use LLMs in your own Python Programs. Create a Hugging Face account: huggingface.co/join Create and copy your access token: Your user profile Create a .env file with your access token string: echo "HUGGINGFACE_ACCESS_TOKEN=hf_..." >> .env Load the .env variables in your python script using dotenv package and os.environ: TIP: Use os.environ to retrieve the dict of variable values rather than dotenv.load_values- Otherwise other environment variables that have been set by other shell scripts such as .bashrc will be ignored. This confused us when we were getting our GitLab CI-CD pipeline working and deploying to Render.com. Each of your cloud services will have different approaches to setting environment variables. This token string can be passed as a keyword argument to most of the pipeline and model classes. import dotenv dotenv.load_dotenv() import os env = dict(os.environ) token = env['HUGGINGFACE_ACCESS_TOKEN'] Find the path and name for the model on Hugging Face hub you want to use: search for "llama2" in the top search bar on huggingface.co/ TIP: don't hit enter at the end of your search, instead click on "See 3958 model results for llama2" I clicked on meta-llama/Llama-2-7b-chat-hf to see the documentation On the documentation page for your model you may have to apply for a license if it's not really open source but business source like Meta does with its AI so you can't use their models to compete with them Apply for a license to use Llama2 on ai.meta.com using the same e-mail you used for your Hugging Face account. Follow the instructions on huggingface.co to authenticate your python session TIP: You'll need to use the kwarg use_auth_token in the AutoModel.from_pretrained or pipeline functions. And it should be set to the token from your Hugging Face profile page. The hugging face documentation says to use the token kwarg, but that never worked for me. from transformers import pipeline, set_seed generator = pipeline('text-generation', model='openai-gpt') q = "2+2=" responses = generator( q, max_length=10, num_return_sequences=10 ) responses [{'generated_text': '2+2= 2.2, 1.1 and'}, {'generated_text': '2+2= 3336 miles. they'}, {'generated_text': '2+2= 2, = 2 = 2'}, {'generated_text': '2+2= 4 = 2 = 5 n'}, {'generated_text': '2+2= 0 ( 1 ) = ='}, {'generated_text': '2+2= 6 times the speed of sound'}, {'generated_text': '2+2= 2 times 5, 865'}, {'generated_text': '2+2= 3 / 7 / 11 ='}, {'generated_text': '2+2= 2 2 n 2 of 2'}, {'generated_text': '2+2= 1, 9 = 1,'}] Here's the cow leg counting question: q = "There are 2 cows and 2 bulls, how many legs are there?" responses = generator( f"Question: {q}nAnswer: ", max_length=30, num_return_sequences=10) answers = [] for resp in responses: text = resp['generated_text'] answers.append(text[text.find('Answer: ')+9:]) answers 'four. n " let me see if i have this straight', 'only 3. and three cows and 2 bulls are bigger than', '2, 2, 1, 2. n " not yet', "one per cow, that's all there is. in fact", '30. and what am i? oh, yes, about', 'one. the big, white bull that is bigger than 1', 'three. they need to be introduced to the cow population before', "1. i don't know how many and where exactly ;", 'no 2. 2. two bulls for 1 bull and 2', '1, there are 1.2, and 2, there are']
Are you curious about using AI in your law firm? In this podcast episode, Jim and Tyson interview Manny Griffiths, the CEO and co-founder of Hona (formerly known as Milestones), a legal tech company that uses AI to change the client management experience.Hona was created as a way for client's going through the legal system to keep up to date on the progress of their cases. Manny shares about Hona as a “Domino's pizza tracker” type of system, where clients can know every aspect of their case and know where their cases are in the legal process. This stemmed from a personal story of being out of the loop in a case for months at a time, with no answers from his lawyer. Hona really works to improve the client experience and ensures those going through the legal process always know the status of their case. What makes Hona such a great product is that it includes every aspect of the client-lawyer interaction. The app includes basic communication, data collection (ie. basic personal information), billing and an AI chatbot that provides additional information on a case. Manny speaks to the fact that AI is drastically changing the way lawyers do their work. Though there are some that are hesitant to adopt it in their own firms, those that are wanting to elevate their firms are using it. Manny talks about how other people are becoming eager to learn about Hona and provides demos on how the app was created and how it is used. This shows the popularity of AI within the legal field. With the adoption of AI, the legal field is moving in a direction that many thought it would not go down. Simply put, the firms who are smart and take advantage of AI will prosper and the firms who are rejecting it will eventually go out of business. Listen in to learn more!Jim's Hack: Respond to your YouTube comments and see more engagement!Manny's Tip: Pay college football players or college athletes to do a small commercial or snippet and then send it to your alumni that are a fan of that team. Evelyn Ackah, a successful immigration attorney from Canada, joins Tyson and Jim to share her experience and advice for attorneys looking to start their own niche practice. From starting her own firm to practicing law in two different countries, Evelyn has faced a variety of challenges and has come out on top. Here are some key takeaways: Be Agile: When starting her firm, Evelyn had to make quick adjustments due to adopting twins on her own. She started her firm in just three weeks and had to juggle her personal and professional life. She emphasizes the need to be agile and make adjustments and tweaks to improve the business rather than throwing everything away and starting over. Mindset Matters: Evelyn believes that mindset is critical in achieving success. She had to shift her mindset to overcome challenges in her business and become more optimistic. She encourages attorneys to adopt a mindset of an owner rather than an employee mindset. Diversify Your Services: While Evelyn has a successful niche practice in immigration law, she also recognizes the need to offer complementary services such as wills and employment law to her clients. She suggests adding additional service offerings rather than branching out into unrelated areas. Treat Your Practice Like Your Own Business: Evelyn encourages attorneys to build personal relationships with clients and own their files to develop a mindset of an owner rather than an employee. She also recommends taking advantage of the marketing and business development training provided by big firms to develop necessary skills for running a successful practice. Overall, Evelyn's experience and advice provide valuable insights for attorneys looking to start their own niche practice. Whether you are just starting out or looking to expand your services, Evelyn tips can help you achieve success. So take her advice and get started on your own journey today! After handling his wife's immigration papers, lawyer Erick Widman had a fire lit in himself to niche down to family and business immigration. His law firm is now 10 years old, with all the ups and downs that come from being an entrepreneur and owning your own firm. One of the biggest challenges Erick faced was being unprepared for how difficult it would be to handle employees. And all of the coaching you have to do for the employees - and so Erick became a high performance coach. How do you manage people all day? Have you placed value on that? Jim's Hack: Read the book by Napoleon Hill “Think and Grow Rich'' - it's a little woo woo and a little outdated but the central message makes it worth it. — and that message is — That anything that we want to have happened has to begin as a thought and that the only changes that happened in the world happened as a thought and our job is to keep that thought alive until it manifests itself into an action. Erick's Tip: Watch the documentary “All or Nothing Arsenal” which has a soccer coach rally the leadership of a failing team.Tyson's Tip: Use an app to place the text on the bottom of the marketing video you created for social media called CapCut with a free and paid version.

SEASON 3 FINALE: While you're waiting for season 4, try using OMG in your boardroom. SCRIPT We've reached the end of season three of OMG. 150 episodes. I've said before that every time I sit down to write for this podcast I'm afraid I won't have any new ideas. And sure, it would be a fair criticism to say that I don't really always have *new* ideas. I do revisit a lot of topics. But I do always feel like I have something different to say, either because I've changed my mind or learned something new or am just feeling a bit opinionated and snarky. That inspiration mainly comes from the people in my community. Directors, senior executives, educators, advisors, and sometimes just nerdy weirdos. I get so much insight and energy from the conversations I have with these people, and honestly I probably won't ever run out of material as long as they'll keep talking to me. Which brings me to my pro-tip. This pile of 150 episodes of OMG consolidates so many ideas and perspectives that I've gathered up over the past couple of years of my governance journey. And even though the stuff I say here may not be “right” or even all that smart sometimes, it definitely *can* act as a useful conversation starter for you, your board, and the rest of your team. Take advantage the privilege I have to speak to amazing people every day by picking out one or two episodes to share with your board and management in advance of your next board meeting. It'll only take them a couple of minutes to listen, and it might spark some different thinking. I'll be back in a few months with Season 4. In the meantime, reach out anytime at mattfullbrook.com if you have ideas or questions that you think I should cover next season, or if you have any other ideas to help make OMG even better. Thank you so much for listening. See you soon.

This simple, yet most powerful technique creates some space between the urge to binge and the actual binge. I learn this breath practice in my yoga teacher training and I find it super helpful when I'm stressed and I used it often before or after a binge in my recovery journey. Find a quiet space and give this a go next time you feel the urge to binge. It's Part 2 of our conversation with go-getter Rachel Carlson, Yelp Pittsburgh's Community Director. In today's episode, Rachel talks about all Yelp has to offer. Many of us are curious about what's a great spot to go to around town. This also goes for other types of business or services. Rachel has found her dentist this way, and has only great things to say about him. You cannot write reviews of your experience without first signing up, which is simple. Once you are signed up, you are officially a yelper, but if you just browse the site Rachel considers you a “creeper”.“We absolutely want it to be an organic experience.”What's The Big Idea: Rachel's dedication to showing business owners their free tools on Yelp, and how it can help their business.Business Tool or Tip: Use the social avenue that is in front of you. It could be Yelp, Facebook, Instagram, of Twitter. A great tip for pitches is to have a three sentence email; give a complaint, address what you need, and an action item.Hit The Bulls Eye:Ice cream: Antony's Ice CreamPizza: Pizza TaglioCraft Beer: Grist HouseWings: Mount Lebanon SalonCoffee: Big Dog CoffeeHot New Pittsburgh Restaurant: B52 CafeRachel Carlson's Social Media:@YelpPittsburghLinkedinFacebookAudible is offering a free download with a 30-day trial to give you the opportunity to check out their service.
