This week on Planetary Radio, we take a peek behind the scenes at National Geographic's new documentary, “The Space Race,” which celebrates the triumphs and struggles of the first African-American space pioneers and astronauts. Co-directors Diego Hurtado de Mendoza and Lisa Cortés, space pioneer Ed Dwight, and astronaut Leland Melvin join us to discuss the film. But first, Casey Dreier, The Planetary Society's chief of space policy, and Jack Kiraly, our director of government relations, give an update on the U.S. budget gridlock that caused the recent layoff of hundreds of people at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Last June, President Donald Trump reinstituted the National Space Council by Executive Order, chaired by Vice President Mike Pence. The council has been active on many fronts and has approved several recommendations devoted to regulatory reform for various commercial space activities. Since the Council’s reformation, President Trump has adopted two directives, the second of which sets policies ensuring that any regulations adopted and enforced promote economic growth and encourage American leadership in space commerce. At the same time, the FCC has been focusing on related issues. It recently granted authorization of the use of the Ka, Ku and V bands for satellites to provide internet service in the geostationary and non-geostationary satellite orbits. The Commission has also proposed changes to the regulatory review process for smaller satellite systems and discussed the issue of space debris. Welcome Renegade Nation it’s me Naughty Nicole and it’s time for another Renegade Review. Today, we’re going to take a little bit of a departure and talk about a movie that I wouldn’t normally review. I received a request from a listener to review “something” for Black History month, and normally I prefer to review things simply because I watched, read or listened to it, I don’t need a particular holiday or “celebratory month” in order to do a review. But since this was a long-time listener, and he asked so nicely, I thought I would honor his wishes. So I decided I’d pick one of the movies that the Hollywood crowd is dubbing as Oscar-worthy and give it a whirl. So, today's show will be a review of the movie Hidden Figures. Sky Pilot Radio The Soundtrack of your Life http://streamdb7web.securenetsystems.net/v5/SKYPILOT Now if you’re unfamiliar with the basic story, the film follows three women of color as they become instrumental in the American Space program. So the movie centers on the great space race between the United States and Russia from the 1960’s. This period drama set during the space race peels back the curtain on a shameful corner of racial inequality and pays respect to a small group of people who didn’t get it at the time: the black female “human computers” at NASA whose brilliance helped launch America into space. Now this is based on a true story, and normally I love movies like this. And don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy this movie too, but there were a few things that I think could have been so much better, but we’ll get to that.
