Today's guest has the best outlook. Welcome Clinton Jacob of Mr. Phylzzz to the podcast. He's based out of Chicago but originally hails from Clarksville, OH. Apparently they have quite the gruesome claim to fame. Clinton began his musical career playing in bands that were a little more traditional in their sound and approach, which he hated. But there wasn't much in Clarksville besides that and dead bodies. And that's actually what made Clinton realize that music was what he wanted to do. Mr. Phylzzz was formed as a joke by driving a member of one of those hated bands to quit the band he loved. Around that same time, he also started working at a comedy club and dabbling in stand up. The perseverance Clinton saw from comedians crashing and burning one night just to kill the next had a profound effect on him and his view of his band and the philosophy of “do it all backwards”.  Clinton talks about how he connected with the legendary label Amphetamine Reptile and how the band's relationship with The Melvins formed and how important it is to him. After going through a few drummers, Clinton found his equal in Dan Sein. The two make a very noisy dynamo. To that end, Clinton tells some of the odd studio techniques the band has employed over the years. They have some big plans for 2025 including new music and touring a lot. So grab the music on Bandcamp or wherever you get music (bt Bandcamp is best). Follow them @mrphylzzzband on Instagram, mrphylzzz on Facebook, or at mrphylzzz.com. And make sure you spell it wrong. The cross-pollination of punk and rock between the United States and Australia has been going on for decades, but one of lesser-known but most interesting (to us, at least!) is the 1980s and early 90s grunge scene, and how Australian bands like The Scientists, The Birthday Party, and Cosmic Psychos had an influence on their American Pacific Northwest counterparts. In the case of the Cosmic Psychos, it was finding commonality with bands like Mudhoney and the Melvins, and releasing their 1989 album on the then upstart Sub Pop label. In 1991 the band recorded with Butch Vig following the Nirvana's Nevermind sessions and produced Blokes You Can Trust, released on the influential Amphetamine Reptile label. For a three-piece, the sound is massive thanks to the fuzzed-out bass that will remind some of the desert and stoner rock scenes, while the old-school AC/DC riffs combined with punk and hardcore attitude of Black Flag and Motorhead lands on the spiritual kin of Seattle's grunge scene.   Songs In This Episode:   Intro - Dead Roo 20:16 - Back At School 29:40 - Loser 36:26 - Do It To Me Outro - Nightshift   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. Dan Schlissel joins Andy in the Stand Up! Records warehouse to talk about friends he's lost on his label. The description includes links to their content and links to other referenced content.DAN SCHLISSELDan Schlissel had an odd route to comedy; it came through Nebraska Punk rock. Born on the East Coast the son of a Holocaust survivor father and a Native Israeli mother into a strong Jewish community till the ripe age of 12 at which point his parents up and moved to the somewhat perplexing locale of Kearney Nebraska. A land of cows, corn, blue collars and red necks. It was on this cow patty laden soil that Dan stumbled into the world of Punk rock; an influence that would permeate through every aspect of Schlissel’s career. First as a pioneer or Midwestern punk and later as a Grammy winning comedy producer – while getting his Bachelor of Science in Physics at the University of Nebraska Lincoln he started the now famed -Ism/Ismist Recordings in his dorm room. Inspired by Sub Pop, Amphetamine Reptile, Discord, SST and Touch and Go. Ismist became an important pat of Midwestern indy rock releasing records from the likes of House of Large Sizes, Killdozer, and putting out the first recordings of the now multi-platinum favorite of Spencer’s Gifts employees: Slipknot. He also released the single Saddle Creek by Polecat which Bright Eye’s Connor Oberest named his label after. In 1998 Schlissel moved to Minneapolis – falling in love with the city after a particularly rousing Bauhaus concert. Within a few months he met burgeoning stand up comedian Lewis Black whom Dan produced six records, including three that were nominated and one that won a Grammy (The Carnegie Hall Performance). Dan has gone on to produce and executive produce over two hundred standup records. He is an internationally recognized comedy expert producing not only for his own label but for other large labels as well as television and DVDs and Mexico’s very first Stand Up Comedy festival. Here’s an episode to the WTF episode mentioned in the beginning if you’d like to get caught up! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mPUemGyWn8For more information on Stand Up! Feedtime: Engineered by Alicia Saye Recorded at PBS FM Studio’s, Melbourne, 22nd June 2017 Feedtime was formed in Sydney in the late 70’s. They’ve been described as “A blues-noise… equal parts abstract minimalism and working class roots-rock. Post-punk, yet right in the thick of it; miles ahead of the pack and not many seemed to notice.” (PBS FM 2017) The original line up released 4 albums on Aberrant Records in the US, UK and Europe as well as Australia throughout the 1980’s before splitting in 1989.  The band reformed with a new drummer in the mid 90’s, this time releasing Billy through Amphetamine Reptile records and completed tours with The Damned and Unsane. The latter also appearing on a 7 inch split with feedtime in 1996. Apart from the odd reunion show, the band remained quiet for a long time before reforming their original line up to record Gas which was released via In The Red in 2017. Other Places: Engineered by Jeremy Smith Recorded at PBS FM Studio’s, Melbourne, 4th August 2018 Also the drummer of Melbourne based Taipan Tiger Girls, Mat Watson’s Other Places is his solo electronic project, an opportunity to delve into early 60’s exotic instrumental music, motorik rhythms, cosmic techno and synth heavy science fiction soundtracks. To date Watson has released 3 albums, self titled in 2011,  Symbols in 2013 and 2017’s Lost In The Sea of Paradise, all through IT Records.

This is the first episode of the TOPIC series that Randy Larsen and I are going to do from time to time.  It started out with our playlist episodes and evolved into this more formatted type of setup.  Both of us were heavily influenced by the 90's record label Amphetamine Reptile. Bands like Helmet and Today is the Day Started out there and the vibe established my the label gave rise to some killer bands that pretty much existed in obscurity.  If you aren't familiar with this era in music check out the youtube playlist we put together. Vinnie Signorelli is the heavy groovin’ drummer of NY’s proto-noise rock merchants Unsane. We get into Italian food (of course), gigging at CGBG’s in the early days of Unsane with Helmet in what was at the time called the “Crust Rock” scene, auditioning for Richard Hell & the Voidoids, recording the new record “Sterilize”, his father purchasing him his first drum set to “run the upstairs tenant out”, nearly dying TWICE, and how drums might just have saved his life. *Track at 31:35 is “Fix it”off the 7’ split on Amphetamine Reptile records http://unsanenyc.com/ https://www.backstreetmerch.com/en-us/artist/unsane/ https://www.riffrelevant.com/2017/06/27/unsane-share-upcoming-sterilize-album-tour-dates/ https://www.facebook.com/TrueBlueTattooNYC ***Photo Cred: http://nathanielshannon.com/

I'm few weeks late this time, but hopefully this selection of jams will be worth the wait! September brings the great news that Memphis weirdo blues rockers the Grifters have reissued their classic 1994 LP, Crappin' You Negative. This hot mess of ugly distortion, bent guitar duels, and loose-limbed grooves might be a bit dated, but it still bleeds passion and grit through the speakers like it did back then. I was lucky enough to see them on a reunion tour last year, and the addition of age, wisdom, and increased precision made them even more powerful. Here's tp the hope that they make more music!Episode #55 of Random Old Records starts off with the Grifters aptly enough, then goes all over the map. You'll hear an absolute jangle-pop earworm from Paperhead bassist Peter Stringer-Hye, a classic Aussie punk jam from Kim Salmon and The Scientists, a brand-new song from Rangers, and a gross, Flipper-lovin' punk plod from Cleveland's Rubber Mate. Finally, in honor of my recent viewing of the Amphetamine Reptile/Tom Hazelmyer documentary The Color Of Noise, you get a ferocious track from Halo Of Flies, and like-minded jams from Laughing Hyenas and Chrome Cranks. As always, thanks for listening! I will be back in a few weeks, closer to a regular schedule I hope, with episode #56. This one will be a special "5-10-15-20" episode where I hop in the time machine to re-visit songs from 5, 10, 15, and 20 years ago! 2001 and 1996 were some strange and interesting times, for sure!Random Old Records #55Released 09/18/2016DOWNLOAD HERE1. If you follow Random Old Records on Facebook, you know that episode #48, the first new episode of Random Old Records Podcast in TWO YEARS, was posted to Soundcloud back in February. This isn't just a temporary thing. ROR IS BACK! Expect to see a brand new episode every second day of the month from here on out. The reasons I quit and came back are convoluted and not very exciting, so I'm not going to go into great detail. The main takeaway is that my podcast host Mevio went out of business two years ago and took down everything I had online, and it's taken me a long time to get the time to fix that mess the right way. Below this post you will see a box to subscribe to my brand new mailing list. Since the venues to freely advertise something like a podcast are drying up (lookin' at you, Facebook!), signing up to the ROR mailing list is the best way to keep up. The ONLY time you will get an email from me is when a new episode is posted. That's it! Put your email in, click Submit, and you'll be the first to know when (and where) the next episode drops! While I'm on the self-promotion kick, you will notice that there is a new "Podcast Archive" post below this one. This will contain links and info for past episodes of Random Old Records. I'm slowly going through my files and re-uploading everything, and this will keep track of the process. There are a bunch already posted, with more coming soon! Now that all the boring babble is finished, let's get to the JAMS! Random Old Records Podcast #49 features an hour's worth of killer tracks, The spotlight this time is bruising, heavy, noisy punk rock from the likes of Mystic Inane, Life Stinks, Cows, and Whatever Brains, plus the chillest of chill jams by Mac Demarco, Mild High Club, and Greg Ashley, and a bit of rare 70s rock n' roll from Morningstar and Sugluk!
