St. Johns River Lighthouse (Mayport Lighthouse Association) The St. Johns River Lighthouse is a decommissioned lighthouse located on the grounds of Naval Station Mayport in Jacksonville, Florida. First lighted in 1859, it was decommissioned in 1929 and replaced with a lightship. The lightship in turn was replaced by the 1954 Art Deco style St. Johns Lighthouse, which is also on Naval Station Mayport. The Mayport Lighthouse Association or MLA is a volunteer-driven nonprofit organization dedicated to saving and restoring St. Johns River Lighthouse, as well as safeguarding the cultural, historical, and maritime heritage of Mayport Village. Our guest, Elizabeth Boggs, is the vice president of the Mayport Lighthouse Association. Elizabeth was recently awarded a “Guiding Light” award for her volunteer work at the St. Augustine Lighthouse. Elizabeth Boggs (right) was recently awarded the “Guiding Light” Award for her volunteer service with the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum. Presenting the award is Caitlin Black, manager of volunteers at the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum. (Mayport Lighthouse Association)
Haunted St. Augustine Lighthouse | Paranormal Podcast For our 300th episode, we took a deep dive into one of America's most storied haunted locations — the St. Augustine Lighthouse in Florida, a 165-foot spiral-striped beacon that's been racking up ghost sightings, mysterious deaths, and paranormal encounters since the 1500s. We walked through centuries of wild history, from Spanish colonists and pirate-infested waters to a keeper who literally fell to his death mid-paint job and a heartbreaking 1873 tragedy involving four young girls that still echoes through the lighthouse's 219 steps to this day. Between the cigar-smoking spirits, the playful child ghosts tying shoelaces to staircases, a keeper who straight-up abandoned his post and never looked back, and a TAPS investigation that left even the pros shook — this place has all the ingredients for a legitimately haunted location. We also kicked things off with some breaking local Bigfoot news that had us questioning what exactly is lurking in our own backyard, because apparently the cryptids aren't waiting for us to come find them.
St. Augustine, Florida — oldest city in America, oldest hauntings still roaming. A mom and her two daughters thought they were just doing a fun nighttime ghost tour: execution trees, murder alleys, yellow fever burials, the famously haunted St. Augustine Lighthouse. But this one didn't stay a history lesson. While the guide was telling the tragic story of the lighthouse keeper's two young daughters who drowned when their rail cart plunged into the water, all three of them — at the exact same time — turned and looked up at the lightkeeper's house… and there was a little girl in the upstairs window, staring down at them. The building was CLOSED. No one was supposed to be inside. At that same moment, they smelled cigar smoke — and later learned the lighthouse keeper was known for smoking cigars. The night kept escalating. At the yellow fever cemetery, they watched a man walk toward a construction fence… and simply vanish. No opening. No door. No way out. Some ghost tours give you stories. This one gave them proof. #TrueGhostStory #StAugustine #HauntedLighthouse #ParanormalActivity #RealGhostStoriesOnline #FloridaHauntings #GhostTourGoneRight #LighthouseGhost #CreepyEncounters #SupernaturalStories Love real ghost stories? Samantha Palmer is the Director of Brand Experience for Flagler College in St. Augustine, FL. With over 20 years of experience at the college, plus time as a student, Samantha has played a pivotal role in developing and overseeing the historic tours and retail operations at Flagler. Her work focuses on enhancing the brand experience for both students and visitors, leveraging the college's rich history and iconic architecture. In this interview, Samantha talks about historic tours, St. Augustine's tourism industry, and taking chances on people. Historic tours "You get to experience the brand not only through what their script is... but you also get to experience a student who is here working on their four-year education." Samantha discusses how Flagler College's historic tours are a unique blend of education and tourism, allowing students to gain invaluable public speaking and storytelling skills. The tours are not just about showcasing the beautiful and historic campus; they also serve as a crucial recruitment tool for the college. By involving students as tour guides, the program offers a dual benefit—visitors get a glimpse of the college's rich history, and students gain hands-on experience that enhances their academic journey and prepares them for future careers. St. Augustine's tourism industry "We have always been members of the St. Augustine Attractions Association... we're kind of lucky that this area is so concentrated with attractions, but we're also willing to talk to each other." Samantha highlights the collaborative spirit within St. Augustine's tourism industry, emphasizing the unique position Flagler College holds within this historic city. As a major attraction in St. Augustine, Flagler College contributes to and benefits from the city's vibrant tourism sector. The college's involvement in local attractions associations and partnerships with other sites, such as the St. Augustine Lighthouse and the Pirate Museum, ensures a cohesive and enriched experience for visitors. Samantha also notes how the college's location and history make it an essential stop for those exploring the oldest city in the U.S. Taking chances on people "I like to take chances on people. Let's see. What's the worst that happens?" In her role at Flagler College, Samantha has learned the importance of taking chances on people, particularly students who may not initially seem like the perfect fit for a role. She shares stories of students who, despite their initial reservations or lack of experience, have thrived in positions like tour guides. These experiences often lead to surprising and rewarding outcomes, with students gaining confidence and discovering new career paths, such as in public speaking, theater, or law. Samantha's belief in giving people opportunities reflects her broader philosophy of mentorship and development, helping to foster a supportive and growth-oriented environment at Flagler College. If you'd like to learn more about Flagler College or get in touch with Samantha Palmer, you can visit Flagler College's website or reach out to her directly via email at SPalmer@flagler.edu. The historic tours at Flagler College, currently on hiatus for renovation, will resume in September 2024, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the college's rich history and architecture. The lighthouse is a beacon for land. Possibly a beacon for hope, or maybe even joy, but at least it's a beacon for land. But, even thought it may call ships and travelers to it's shores, it also can call ghosts. That's the case with the St. Augustine Lighthouse in Florida. This may be one of the more haunted locations we have ever come across, so much so that you may want to be careful with any hitchhikers.Listen to Davis pretend like they don't mention anything about some little girl ghosts in this location, even though there definitely is. Listen to Lisa give us an in depth look at this lighthouse as it switched from watchtower to lighthouse back and forth all throughout history. And listen to Jake regale us with some scary stories that were incredibly well-documented by many different places. The light is on. Your ship is out there, and now we've hooked you in. Along with all the ghosts, apparitions, and paranormal entities that there could be. so bring your listening ears and your paranormal pants and maybe a good T-shirt to this week's edition of The Possibly Paranormal Podcast. St. Augustine, Florida. What some people say is the oldest city in the United States of America. The whole town itself, due to its often violent history, is known to be one of the most haunted locations in the world. The lighthouse of St. Augustine, however, is the place that is perhaps the most talked about in town. A place where even the screams of the dead can still be heard. Is it real? Or is it another legend? -------------------------- This episode was brought to you by Royal Empress Apparel and Collectibles!
