A 38-year coach, he spent 12 seasons in the high-school ranks (Henninger and Baldwinsville), 17 at the college level (Syracuse, Georgia Tech and Michigan State) and nine in the National Football League (Raiders, Jets, Seahawks and Buccaneers). He coached in one Section 3 title game, in 10 college bowl games, in 15 NFL playoff contests and in two Super Bowls. Danan Healy is an award winning singer/songwriter based out of Central New York. She has been entertaining audiences with her combination of sassy, introspective, thoughtful, funny, and even Christmas-themed originals all over America for more than 10 years. In 2005, she moved to Brooklyn and quickly became hooked into New York City's thriving rock scene, recording her debut EP, “You Need More Love”. In 2007, her first full-length album, “The Other Side”, was named one of the top 25 albums by Indie Music.com and many of her tracks are currently in rotation on internet, satellite, and college radio stations. Some highlights of her solo performing career include showcases at SXSW 2007 and The Dewey Beach Music Festival 2007, The Knitting Factory in New York City (opening for The Skatalites), and a tour of Central New York to promote her 2007 holiday album, Christmas Time Rocks. Danan Healy recorded “I Am” in 2008. She also relocated from New York City to Syracuse to be closer to family as she and her husband started their family. Since then, she has performed her rock tunes at the Music and Arts Over Syracuse Festival, the Boilermaker Expo in Utica, and the C&G Music Singer/Songwriter Showdown II in Baldwinsville, winning first place. Danan has also gotten involved in the local theater and opera scene. She joined the roster for the Syracuse Opera chorus, appearing most recently in The Mikado in fall 2010 and in Don Giovanni and The Pearl Fishers in the winter/spring of 2011, and set to perform the lead role, Aldonza, in the Opera's upcoming free summer performance of Man of La Mancha. Danan had a starring role as Philia in Appleseed Production's A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum in 2009, for which she was awarded "Best Vocal Performance" by the Theatre Association of New York State and earned a flattering review in the New Times. The Onondaga Community College Women's Soccer team is beginning to play well as it progresses into the season. "We're trending in the right direction," said Head Coach Sean St. Denis. "If we continue to play the way we are capable of playing, we should end up with an above .500 record and possibly contend for the regional championship. We've proven we can hang with some of the best teams in the region."St. Denis and two of his players, Madison Pelton and Lynnae Russell, sat down with us for our an edition of our podcast, "Chatting About College." St. Denis, who also coaches soccer at the Central New York Family Sports Centre on Jones Road near Baldwinsville, began coaching Pelton when she was 7 years old. Pelton would go on to play varsity soccer at Phoenix High School for 5 years. Selah starts this episode by sharing a bit about her family history and her initial insecurity when comparing it to Russell's rich family history. For Black History Month, Russell recently shared his story at a local high school and you'll hear the recording in this episode. Russell is a descendant of Henry Bakeman, a free African who fought in the American Revolutionary War. As a result Russell is a member, Chaplain, 2nd Vice President and Past President of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) John Eager Howard Chapter (Baltimore, MD). Russell's great-great grandfather Joseph M. Fugett escaped slavery during the civil war. He lived in Baldwinsville, NY where he opened his own blacksmith shop and held a US Patent. More recently, Russell's late uncle Reginald F. Lewis founded the first African American owned law firm on Wall Street and in 1987 completed a $1 billion leveraged buyout of Beatrice International Foods. As Selah has become a part of Russell's family, she shares how she has felt loved and seen as a result of her courage and pioneering spirit. We conclude with an encouragement that focuses on honoring the women who, while not included in Russell's presentation, deserve acknowledgement for the role they played in what was accomplished. Episode 3 features Charlie Bertrand! Next spring, Charlie is using is final year of eligibility to play college lacrosse at ACC powerhouse Virginia. Charlie was also drafted with the 44th overall pick in the MLL draft by the Connecticut Hammerheads. Before all this, Charlie played division 2 lacrosse at Merrimack where he was a 2X national champion, a team captain, and winner of the rookie of the year award his freshman season in his conference. Growing up in Baldwinsville, NY, Charlie shares his lacrosse journey and explains how he was able to play and have so much success at such a high level. Charlie emphasizes how his work ethic, determination, and love for the game were all important factors to play at the high level he is at.
