We look at the hidden emotional and spiritual challenges of infertility and how Springs in the Desert accompanies couples carrying this cross. The guests share the ministry's origins, the grief and identity struggles many couples face, the different ways men and women process infertility, and the need for compassionate pastoral care. They also explain how community, faith, and a focus on Christ—not just conception—help couples find hope, healing, and a sense of fruitfulness in their marriages. Ann M. Koshute, MTS, is co-founder and Executive Director of Springs in the Desert, a Catholic ministry offering spiritual and emotional support to women and couples carrying the cross of infertility and loss. A graduate of the Pontifical John Paul II Institute, she and her husband Keith are Byzantine Catholics living in Central Pennsylvania. Ann speaks at conferences and retreats, contributes regularly to Eastern Catholic Life, and has written for Ascension Press's Catechism in a Year Companion and daily Scripture reflections; in 2021 she was appointed to the USCCB's Advisory Council. Fr. Paul Varchola West, Spiritual Father for Springs in the Desert, was ordained a Byzantine Catholic priest in 2020 and serves as pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Levittown, Pennsylvania. A columnist for Eastern Catholic Life, he was appointed Director of Deacons for the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Passaic in 2025. He and his wife Alissa, married in 2009, enjoy music, the outdoors, and life with their two children—blessings that came after many years of prayers and infertility treatments. http://www.springsinthedesert.org Facebook: @Springs in the Desert Instagram: @springsinthedesert_ The Springs in the Desert Podcast: https://springsinthedesert.org/podcast/ 00:00 Introduction to Springs in the Desert 05:24 The Journey of Infertility and Founding the Ministry 08:33 Understanding Byzantine Catholicism and Spiritual Leadership 11:22 The Role of Spiritual Support in Infertility 14:11 Navigating Medical and Spiritual Aspects of Infertility 17:16 The Emotional Landscape of Infertility 20:23 Programs and Resources Offered by Springs in the Desert 23:25 The Importance of Community and Shared Experiences 26:30 Addressing Grief and Loss in Infertility 29:19 The Unique Perspectives of Men and Women in Infertility 32:46 Navigating Emotional Responses in Marriage 38:56 The Role of the Church in Supporting Infertility 49:51 Addressing Pregnancy Loss and Grief 54:24 Understanding Identity Beyond Infertility 01:02:01 The Temptation of Objectification in Relationships 01:04:54 The Struggle with Self-Absorption and Spirituality 01:08:37 The Urgency of Infertility Ministry Today 01:11:53 Changing the Conversation Around Infertility 01:16:33 Normalizing Infertility in Young Education 01:21:58 The Importance of Connection and Community 01:25:18 Action Items for Supporting Couples Facing Infertility 01:35:23 Real Estate Commercial Subscribe to our newsletter to get this amazing report: Refuting the Top 5 Gay Myths https://ruthinstitute.org/refute-the-top-five-myths/ Have a question or a comment? Learning to See as Christ Sees: Phronema, Sacrament, and the Healing of the Whole PersonWhen friends tear open a roof to lower a paralytic, Jesus forgives because of their faith—and the room's understanding of God, sin, and healing is turned inside out (Mark 2). What if the Christian life is, at its core, learning to see as Christ sees?In this conversation, Deacon Anthony (St. Anthony the Great Orthodox Church, San Diego) joins us to unpack the Orthodox phronema—the Church's way of seeing and living—which is not just ideas on a page but a formation of the heart through Scripture, sacrament, repentance, and community. What we exploreWhat is “phronema”? More than a “mindset,” it's a ecclesial way of perceiving: how Christians notice, judge, and love. It's shaped by the Church's worship, her Scriptures in their liturgical home, and a life together that actually heals.Body and soul—no split life: Christianity is incarnational. God meets us through tangible signs—mud on eyes (John 9), bread and wine, water and oil—so grace reaches the whole person.Confession as diagnosis, not humiliation: We don't “check a box” for breaking rules; we name the illness so the Great Physician can heal its root. The priest's role is merciful and confidential; accountability is real, not shaming.Repentance (metanoia): A change of mind and course—cleansing the inside of the cup—that frees us from self-deception and pride. Orthodoxy invites us to tell the truth about ourselves and to begin again. The Eucharist as mystery (not mere symbol): Communion is an encounter with the living Christ that binds wounded people into one Body—the Church as a hospital for the soul. From the apostles to the saints: How the same mind of Christ echoes across centuries and cultures—Saints Macarius, Paisios, and modern elders—so different in personality, yet recognizably one in humility, mercy, and love.Heaven and hell begin now: Entitlement, isolation, and self-invention taste like hell—a life disconnected from reality. Humility, communion, and thanksgiving taste like heaven—alignment with the Truth who is Christ.Countering today's scripts: Why “live for today” and “my truth” leave us lonely and unstable—and how the Church's life offers a steadier identity rooted in Christ and community.Practical takeawaysAccountability with love: spiritual fathers, godparents, spouses, and friends who won't let us settle for less than the truth.Guarding your tongue: how community and confession help us master reactions before they harm.Role models that last: why our children need saints more than celebrities—and how holy lives reawaken desire for God.Unity without centralization: the Church's phronema holds people together even across languages and jurisdictions because Christ is the center.A different question: not “What's the least I must do?” but “How can I give more of myself to the One who gave all?”Questions about Orthodoxy? God calls every man to be a spiritual father. Like Abraham, we're called to be faithful followers, loving leaders, and humble warriors. That means walking in obedience, laying our lives down for others, and trusting God deeply, even when the path is unclear. Spiritual fatherhood isn't about perfection; it's about surrender, courage, and letting God build something lasting through us.

This week, I felt led by the Spirit to press record during my weekly discipleship withLee James. On Monday morning in prayer, the Lord highlightedsin to me, and with curiosity I knew I wanted to study it more. I texted Lee—who has been a Spiritual Father in my life—requesting we dive into sin, transgression, and iniquity that week (today). But as always, the Holy Spirit took us even further.I decided to include the opening portion where Lee, led by the Spirit, spoke a fresh and timely word specifically for me in this season. I pray thisraw, real-time discipleship blesses you as much as it did me.At the end of the day, we're all in process. Even as a four-year businesswoman (officially five this fall!),I'm still being shaped by the Lord. This episode is a glimpse into that journey.Tune in and let's grow together. Jesus challenges their understanding of spiritual lineage and reveals the difference between those who are children of God and those who follow the ways of the devil. Join us as we explore what it truly means to be a child of God and how our actions reveal our Spiritual Father.
