Learning to See as Christ Sees: Phronema, Sacrament, and the Healing of the Whole PersonWhen friends tear open a roof to lower a paralytic, Jesus forgives because of their faith—and the room's understanding of God, sin, and healing is turned inside out (Mark 2). What if the Christian life is, at its core, learning to see as Christ sees?In this conversation, Deacon Anthony (St. Anthony the Great Orthodox Church, San Diego) joins us to unpack the Orthodox phronema—the Church's way of seeing and living—which is not just ideas on a page but a formation of the heart through Scripture, sacrament, repentance, and community. What we exploreWhat is “phronema”? More than a “mindset,” it's a ecclesial way of perceiving: how Christians notice, judge, and love. It's shaped by the Church's worship, her Scriptures in their liturgical home, and a life together that actually heals.Body and soul—no split life: Christianity is incarnational. God meets us through tangible signs—mud on eyes (John 9), bread and wine, water and oil—so grace reaches the whole person.Confession as diagnosis, not humiliation: We don't “check a box” for breaking rules; we name the illness so the Great Physician can heal its root. The priest's role is merciful and confidential; accountability is real, not shaming.Repentance (metanoia): A change of mind and course—cleansing the inside of the cup—that frees us from self-deception and pride. Orthodoxy invites us to tell the truth about ourselves and to begin again. The Eucharist as mystery (not mere symbol): Communion is an encounter with the living Christ that binds wounded people into one Body—the Church as a hospital for the soul. From the apostles to the saints: How the same mind of Christ echoes across centuries and cultures—Saints Macarius, Paisios, and modern elders—so different in personality, yet recognizably one in humility, mercy, and love.Heaven and hell begin now: Entitlement, isolation, and self-invention taste like hell—a life disconnected from reality. Humility, communion, and thanksgiving taste like heaven—alignment with the Truth who is Christ.Countering today's scripts: Why “live for today” and “my truth” leave us lonely and unstable—and how the Church's life offers a steadier identity rooted in Christ and community.Practical takeawaysAccountability with love: spiritual fathers, godparents, spouses, and friends who won't let us settle for less than the truth.Guarding your tongue: how community and confession help us master reactions before they harm.Role models that last: why our children need saints more than celebrities—and how holy lives reawaken desire for God.Unity without centralization: the Church's phronema holds people together even across languages and jurisdictions because Christ is the center.A different question: not “What's the least I must do?” but “How can I give more of myself to the One who gave all?”Questions about Orthodoxy? God calls every man to be a spiritual father. Like Abraham, we're called to be faithful followers, loving leaders, and humble warriors. That means walking in obedience, laying our lives down for others, and trusting God deeply, even when the path is unclear. Spiritual fatherhood isn't about perfection; it's about surrender, courage, and letting God build something lasting through us.

This week, I felt led by the Spirit to press record during my weekly discipleship withLee James. On Monday morning in prayer, the Lord highlightedsin to me, and with curiosity I knew I wanted to study it more. I texted Lee—who has been a Spiritual Father in my life—requesting we dive into sin, transgression, and iniquity that week (today). But as always, the Holy Spirit took us even further.I decided to include the opening portion where Lee, led by the Spirit, spoke a fresh and timely word specifically for me in this season. I pray thisraw, real-time discipleship blesses you as much as it did me.At the end of the day, we're all in process. Even as a four-year businesswoman (officially five this fall!),I'm still being shaped by the Lord. This episode is a glimpse into that journey.Tune in and let's grow together. In this sermon, we look into a confrontation between Jesus and the religious leaders, where the question “Who's your father?” takes on profound spiritual significance. Jesus challenges their understanding of spiritual lineage and reveals the difference between those who are children of God and those who follow the ways of the devil. Join us as we explore what it truly means to be a child of God and how our actions reveal our Spiritual Father.

The story of how Gerondissa Makrina become a beacon of Orthodox life in Greece under the guidance of St. Joseph the Hesychast. Gerondissa's nuns later helped start many monasteries in America and Canada under the leadership of Geronda Ephraim of Arizona. In turn, these monasteries sent nuns to North America who established new monasteries with the ideals of traditional Orthodox monasticism. Something similar happened when Gerondissa Makrina became gravely ill and was coughing up blood. We didn't have a telephone to inform him about it. But in our next letter to him, we concealed her illness from him because we didn't want to upset him and interrupt his prayer. But then he sent us a letter and said: "My little children, why didn't you write to me that Gerondissa is I and is suffering, so that we could pray for her? You made a big mistake thinking that this would interrupt my prayer. When Father Arsenios and I were praying last night, we noetically saw that she was seriously ill, and we prayed hard for her. My children, I want you to inform me about Whatever is happening with the monastery and especialy with Gerondissa. Write me about it." St. Joseph wrote the sisters: “So submit yourselves to Maria, who is trying to benelt you, and all of us here are praying that the Lord will hep you and make you worthy of eternal life.” _______ Orthodox Wisdom is dedicated to sharing the writings and lives of the Saints of the Orthodox Church. Glory to Jesus Christ!

Today, Michael Acock speaks in the first message of a 10-week series as we walk through the book of Philippians. Today is an overview of the series and we look at Paul's relationship to the church in Philippi as a spiritual father. In Philippians, Paul is inviting us to: 1. Consider God's activities and purposes in creation and salvation. 2. Reflect on God's calling in our own lives. 3. Embrace a mindset that privileges others above ourselves. This letter, the book of Philippians, includes the themes of Christ as at once humble Lord and supreme paradigm of Christian life; of unity in Christ that overcomes the forces of dissension; of a readiness to suffer for the sake of the gospel that does not rob us of joy in Christ; of the radical difference between a righteousness of our own and a righteousness from God; and of a life of thanksgiving in mutual giving and receiving. We hope this message encourages you and helps you know Jesus in a more real way. You can find the full sermon notes and other resources at our website.
