Send us a Text Message. What is up folks?! It's been a minute. Tonight's episode I get a chance to interview a long time friend and 2024 Mount St. Joseph Hall of Fame inductee Johnny “JRod” Rodriguez. Johnny and I entered the Mount together in 2003. He was an excellent lacrosse goalie and one of the more laid back guys I went to school with. It was an absolutely honor and pleasure to interview JRod. We took a stroll down memory lane during our time at The Mount, his journey through college lacrosse and hockey, and his prolific career as a Major League Lacrosse goalie in Atlanta. JRod opens up about his decade long stint as Mater Dei's head lacrosse coach and winding down coaching after his ALS diagnosis last fall that he continues to battle mightily every single day.

Do you sometimes feel like you're in the passenger seat of your life? In this episode of Habits and Hustle, I chat with Jake Steinfeld, aka Body By Jake, about how he used his love and passion for fitness to get into Hollywood and build some of the biggest businesses in the fitness industry ever. For the longest time, Jake felt like life was happening to him - until he didn't want that to be the case anymore. After he lost a huge opportunity in Hollywood, he decided to venture out on his own and become the king of infomercials in the fitness world. Throughout his entrepreneurial journey, he learned a lot of lessons and got a couple of slaps in the face, but he eventually put himself in the driver's seat of his own life. Jake also shares what clients he had when he first started in the fitness industry as a trainer, how he grew his network as he was building his business, and why he considers the infomercial business to be a lot more profitable than the movie industry can ever be. Jake "Body by Jake" Steinfeld has been an innovator and entrepreneur since creating the personal fitness training industry. He established "Body by Jake" Inc. in 1980 to the benefits of healthy living - and the motivation to get there. Jake also created FiT TV, America's first 24-hour fitness lifestyle television network which he sold to News Corp. He is the founder of Major League Lacrosse and the World Series of Youth Lacrosse. He was also appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to serve as Chairman of the California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness. What we discuss: 00:33: About Jake 10:14: How did Jake grow up? 18:40: Why did Jake know he wouldn't make it as a bodybuilder? 23:48: How did Jake get his first client? 28:30: What happened when Jake got approached by a publisher? 31:56: What happened to Jake's stutter? 36:16: Who thought Jake the most?  37:32: For how long did Jake train people? 41:03: What are the slaps in the face that Jake got? 46:18: Did Jake ever think of leveraging the relationships he had developed? 50:08: Who else did Jake train? 59:22: Did Jake always consider himself to be entrepreneurial? 01:04:59: How did Jake grow his network? 01:06:51: What did Jake do with the money he acquired from selling his business? 01:09:21: How did Jake get his first advertisers for his magazine? 01:14:08: How did Jake get started with infomercials? 01:21:26: What's the greatest thing about the infomercial business? 01:23:43: Did Jake own a piece of every company he promoted? 01:28:10: What are Jake's workouts like? 01:40:40: How can you learn more about Jake? Key takeaways: You shouldn't be afraid of asking people for favors or chasing any type of business opportunity. Someone telling you “no” is already a good start - it's halfway towards being a yes. So whenever you are faced with a no, consider yourself to be closer to a “yes” than you've ever been and keep pushing. If you want to take control of your destiny and be in the driver's seat of your life, you need to go out and build what it is you want for yourself. If you don't do that, you will forever be in the passenger seat of your life and waiting for opportunities and disappointments to fall into your lap.  Your network is truly your net worth. When you invest a lot of time and energy into developing a relationship with someone — especially people with power and influence — don't be afraid to ask for a favor when you need one. Just be sure that you can scratch their back in the future if you're asking them to scratch yours.  Thank you to our sponsors: xxxTBDxxx To learn more about Jake: Website: http://bodybyjake.com/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/officialbodybyjake My links: Website: https://www.jennifercohen.com/ Instagram: @therealjencohen  Learn more about your ad choices. Crawley's return to Homewood came after spending the previous three years as an assistant coach at Lehigh University.  At Lehigh, Crawley served as the offensive coordinator of a Mountain Hawk offense that ranked among the nation's best throughout his tenure.  Lehigh ranked 15th in the nation in scoring offense during the COVID-shortened 2020 season (14.00) and jumped into the top 10 in 2021 (14.08), when the Mountain Hawks advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013. Overall, during Crawley's 33 games as Lehigh's offensive coordinator, the Mountain Hawks averaged just under 13 goals per game and the three single-season scoring averages of 14.08, 14.00 and 11.40 rank as the three highest averages at Lehigh in the last 20 years.  Prior to Crawley's arrival, Lehigh had not averaged more than 11 goals per game over the course of a season since 2000. Crawley began his coaching career at Notre Dame in 2018 and helped the Irish to the ACC Tournament title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.  At Notre Dame, he worked closely with the offense and faceoff unit.  He then moved to Colgate for one season (2019) before joining the staff at Lehigh. A two-time captain and two-time Honorable Mention USILA All-American, Crawley played in all 64 games during his four-year career at Johns Hopkins and started the final 30 as a junior and senior.  He totaled 70 career goals and 30 assists, including career highs of 21 goals and 11 assists for 32 points as a sophomore in 2015, when he helped lead the Blue Jays to the NCAA Semifinals and the inaugural Big Ten Tournament title.  He earned a spot on the 2015 NCAA All-Tournament team after a four-goal performance against Maryland in the NCAA Semifinals. In addition to his time at Johns Hopkins, Crawley has also played professional lacrosse in both Major League Lacrosse and the Premier Lacrosse League.  He was selected 33rd overall by the Charlotte Hounds in the 2017 MLL Draft and played two seasons for the Hounds.  He rang up 26 goals and 10 assists in the MLL before moving to Atlas LC in the PLL, where he has played four seasons." Hey everybody, I'm Brian Clapp, VP of Content and Engaged Learning at WorkinSports.com and this is the Work In Sports podcast… When I say cornhole, flag football, spikeball and breakdancing -- it probably sounds like the planning stage for an epic fourth of July party, right? Add in some axe throwing, a little karate combat and the party starts to get a little intense.  The reality is, these competitive activities that are well-suited for a decked out summer affair, are taking the sports industry by storm. These aren't fringe activities, they are high growth sports properties popping up around the globe, invested in by major brands, broadcast in prime slots and making their way into the Olympic Games.  Yes, you heard that right, Olympic Games.  We so often focus on the major sports and normalize them as standard. Hitting a little white ball with a club towards a hole 500 yards away seems normal, but tossing a bean bag toward a hole 24 ft apart is “fringe”. Bouncing a rubber bladder covered in leather, and throwing it into a basket at an arbitrary 10 ft height, is extremely normal... but tossing an axe into a wood block target 15 ft away seems strange.  As today's guest, Gabby Roe, President and Founder of Maestroe says “every sports was a crazy ass idea at one point.” Truer words have never been spoken. Roe himself is a little on the fringe. A highly competitive lacrosse player, he played professionally for the Philadelphia Wings in the National Lacrosse League, spent several years as a chief executive with the AVP professional Beach Volleyball circuit, and helped launch Major League Lacrosse.  He's always gravitated towards sports with upside.  Slightly off the beaten path, but with the potential to be great. His company, Maestroe, focuses on these high-growth sports properties and assists them in all the various stages of their growth cycle -- sponsorships, venues, business planning, marketing, broadcast deals -- this is a fascinating discussion into a side of the sports industry we don't often talk about.  Here he is, Gabby Roe, President and founder of Maestroe... Questions for Gabby Roe, President and Founder of Maestroe: 1: I've read where you've described your company Maestro as a “growth engine for high-growth sports in various stages of their development.” On a podcast you get more time to expand and articulate, so tell us all – what is Maestro? 2: What led you down this path? Where did the intrigue for growing fringe sports come from? 3: Let's define “growth” a little – are we talking revenue growth, or visibility growth? And even broader, do those require different approaches? 4: You played lacrosse at powerhouse University of Virginia and in the National Lacrosse League for the Philadelphia Wings back in the 80's– what traits from your playing career have served you well in the business world? 5: For the various sports you work with, you and your team at Maestro have helped them secure sponsors like Uber, Monster Energy Drinks, Chipotle – massive brands.  To make these deals, is it more important to know someone on the inside of the business and have a powerful network of connections – or is it about having a good story and connection to their brand? 6: What is it like when you get Chipotle on the phone and say, “I want to pitch you on being involved with the Pro Breakdancing tour?” is there ever a moment of self-doubt? 7: How important is data when you are in a pitch? I'd imagine these huge brands want to be convinced of their reach and impact, not just sold a cool story. 8: Are you able to take the knowledge you have working with one sport, like curling, and apply it to another growth project like ultimate frisbee? Are there techniques and knowledge that cross-over or is it complete different each time? 9: What about the audiences? Are there similarities across fringe sports, or are they completely different animals? 10: OK,

Good morning lacrosse fans! I hope you are doing well and thank you for spending some time reading the Utah Lax Report. If you enjoy what you read, please forward to a friend! The podcast is a little different and I hope you enjoy it. Feel free to leave any comments below or respond to this email! News & UpdatesIf you didn't hear, the Premier Lacrosse League is going to have a tournament style, quarantined season beginning on July 25 and ending on August 9. They are calling it the Championship Series and each team will play 4 games and then go into a playoff structure. The format is similar to a World Cup or the Lacrosse World Championships. Obviously it's a bummer that they won't be coming to Utah, but at least we'll get live lacrosse this summer! In the local press, the Daily Herald spotlighted Timpanogos girls lacrosse captain McCall Dunn. “In addition to staying in shape, Dunn is completing her senior course load online, working at a wholesale nursery and going on frequent hikes.” Read the full article here. Also, Utah attackman Colin Burke was selected as the No. 3 player in the 2020 Major League Lacrosse draft. KSL writer and friend of lacrosse, Sean Walker, penned an article about Burke turning pro. There's a podcast in that article as well where Walker interviews Burke about becoming a New York Lizard. Tomorrow at 2:00 p.m., U.S. Lacrosse is hosting a ‘Team Huddle Webinar' and will feature two Team USA players in Marcus Holman (Men's Attack) and Kerrigan Miller (Women's Midfield). It is free to U.S. Lacrosse Members and you can register here. Last but not least, Tribal West opened a second store in the state, known as Tribal West North! The store is located at 600 S State St. STE 4, Clearfield, Utah 84105. It opened two Saturdays ago and is ready for your business. It features all the same things that the Sandy store offers so check it out! You can also shop online. If you didn't already listen to the podcast above, you should check it out. I talk to Tribal West owner Fish Bartlett about opening the second store. Senior SpotlightsI'm going to publish these today, 5/18 and 5/25 then we'll be done so if you want to submit, please do! Send them to tim@timhaslam.com.Alta Girls#11 Majena Horoba - Attack - Majena has been playing for our varsity team since her freshman year. Majena's passion for lacrosse is contagious. She is constantly searching for the next thing to make her and her teammates better. From shooting on goal in her free time, to encouraging wall ball throughout the off-season. Majena never stops. As a lacrosse player, Majena plays a sneaky game. She's constantly looking for plays with other teammates and ways to create fast movement on attack. Majena was an extremely consistent player and always ready to attack the goal. Next year Majena will be attending the University of Utah. There she hopes to study Athletic Training. #24 Annika Sanger - Defense - Annika has been playing for our varsity team since her freshman year. Annika is a defensive powerhouse. She lets no one by her when playing 1v1 defense and is an incredible communicator. You can hear her from a mile away. Annika's understanding of team defense is incredible and helped our younger players learn so much last season. While Annika played defense for us for four years, she never stopped practicing her shot for her future career as a Midfielder. Next year Annika will be attending the University of Utah. I cannot say enough good things about Sam. She is humble, coachable, reliable and level headed. Her field sense and work ethic have allowed her to be a play maker all over the field. Sam will be attending BYU in the fall and hopes to continue playing lacrosse.Marissa Meier - Marissa might be the most coachable athlete our program has ever known. She started playing lacrosse her Junior year and set a goal to make varsity this year. Her work ethic and determination are unparalleled. She did everything we ask with 100% effort and is always the life of the party.
