On this episode of Build Better Brands, Danielle Clarke is joined by Emma Glover, founder of Victress Digital, a social and paid media agency to talk about all the amazing stuff she does in digital marketing and social media.KEY TAKEAWAYSAll I wanted to do was do an ethical business. I'd been in an agency for a long time and I always wanted to try and be the boss that I never had. It's my goal to have a team – not necessarily a big team – I like to refer to us as a micro-agency, bridging the gap between a freelancer and a 60-80-man agency. It's quite personal in that regard, but I like managing people and being around people. From the minute I started freelancing I never referred to the business as me, it's always been Victress throughout, which made an easier transition between me as an entity on my own and growing the team. Always in the back of my mind I wanted to grow it at some point and that would be an easier transition. The need to grow the team came from the demands of my clients, they were asking things of me I couldn't deliver on my own. I created the agency around what the clients were asking for.Naming the company Victress future proofed me. I wanted to work very hard, but I wanted to allow the time and freedom that comes with working for yourself. If clients didn't meet other people they would always rely on me being the only person they could talk to which puts you in the position of not having a holiday or a break, which is problematic when you're the only person people can rely onWe predominantly focus on social media and paid media, but with the freelancers we have we can service other types of marketing. We focus predominantly on SaaS brands and B2B brands, not a lot with eCommerce brands because they need to be serviced by people with that specialism. We're more numbers people, getting into data and getting into strategy. Predominantly we look at lead generation, so if you're a business that needs to get more leads down into your sales pipeline or you've got a sales team that needs to have more leads to handle, we look at creating those leads from a combination of either organic or paid media. It tends to be LinkedIn focussed and PPC – Google search, Microsoft search – though we handle a little bit of Facebook and Instagram for a couple of brands. BEST MOMENTS‘There's a lot going on in the world, especially with Gen Z where you need to have a work/life balance, which I completely appreciate and, if I'm honest, I don't want my team to have to think about work when they're not at work. But it's what I signed up for and chose, so if I need to work on a weekend that's fine.'‘Previously people wanted to go into shops and wanted things they could hold, now in a digital marketing space, the world has become more obsessive about how we make everything digital now.'‘A lot of the brands we work with are not doing something no one else is doing, they're doing something that 10-12 other people are doing, but they're marketing it slightly differently and they've found a gap they can get in with.'‘I wanted to set the standard that this is a female-owned company that is going to give heavy weight to females at director level. I had a vision of female founder female led company. It wasn't and isn't something I've seen before in this industry, so I'm flying the flag for that.'ABOUT THE GUESTEmma Glover is a social media specialist with more than a decade of digital marketing experience. Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan has unveiled the names of the much-anticipated new Eskom board, which includes five engineers and a trade unionist, and which will to be led by Mpho Makwana, who was appointed executive chairperson at the utility in late 2009 following a previous leadership crisis. The board, whose three-year appointment begins on October 1, comprises 13 nonexecutive directors, including Dr Rod Crompton who has been retained from the previous board, and two executive directors, CEO André de Ruyter and CFO Calib Cassim. The five engineers included on the board are: Dr Busisiwe Vilakazi, who holds a DPhil in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford and who is also head of research and innovation at government information technology agency SITA; Lwazi Goqwana, who has 25 years of working experience in manufacturing, construction, financial services, logistics, energy and government, and who has worked at Unilever, Tiger Brands, Barclays Africa, Transnet, and the Department of Public Enterprises; Clive Le Roux, who is an former Eskom chief nuclear officer and who also previously served as a power station manager at Matimba and Koeberg; Mteto Nyati, who holds a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and who is the former CEO of JSE-listed Altron; and Dr Tsakani Mthombeni, who has a PhD in electrical engineering, is a past chairperson of the Energy Intensive Users Group and who is currently the sustainable development executive at Implats. Former Congress of South African Trade Unions general-secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali is an interesting new inclusion. His appointment coincides with recent industrial relations difficulties at the utility, which contributed to the implementation of Stage 6 load-shedding in June and July when some workers at the coal stations embarked on an illegal strike for higher wages. The other members of the board are accountants Fathima Gany, Ayanda Mafuleka and Tryphosa Ramano, as well as lawyer Leslie Mkhabela and former Institute of Internal Auditors of South Africa CEO Dr Claudelle von Eck. Makwana succeeds Professor Malegapuru Makgoba and takes up a role that he occupied previously as an executive chairperson; an appointment made after then CEO Jacob Maroga and then chairperson Bobby Godsell both stepped down following a public dispute over Maroga's proposed future strategy for the utility, which was rejected. Gordhan said that the board had been appointed following a Cabinet meeting and a vetting process that had not involved any other structur, including the African National Congress deployment committee. "I appeared before the Cabinet, we compile these names from various sources and professional bodies and what I'm announcing today is the result of carefully checking out all the candidates that we thought are able to make a contribution and that's what we have in front of us."

Mastercard Launches 2KUZE Agtech Marketplace For Farmers In East Africa

Several well-respected voices we featured on the show last year predicted that we would see some major agtech plays happen in 2017. Sure enough, Mastercard made headlines last week for launching a digital marketplace platform called 2KUZE which connects smallholder farmers, agents, buyers and banks in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. The app allows farmers to buy, sell and receive payments for agricultural products via their feature phones. If this initiative works half as well as we hope it will, it should make a heck of a difference to small-scale farmers looking to sell their produce to the right buyers more efficiently and at the best possible prices. This week's African Tech Round-up features a conversation Andile Masuku had with Katherine Liew. Katherine is the Head of Digital Disruption at Barclays Africa. Given what's fixing to be an exciting year for fintech on the continent, he was keen to tap Katherine's mind to get a sense of how one the continent's largest banking incumbents is going about keeping up with the frantic pace of innovation within the financial services industry. It’s been a busy week for the continent’s fintech scene. The past week saw MTN South Africa announce that it would be discontinuing its mobile money service due to “a lack of commercial viability”. This revelation comes months after Vodacom South Africa ended it’s catastrophic attempt at copying and pasting Kenya’s M-Pesa magic. Meanwhile, Madagascar became only the second African country after Tanzania to to roll out mobile money interoperability across the country's mobile networks. But easily one of the catchiest headline stories of the past week was about Barclays Africa’s involvement in what’s being celebrated as the very first blockchain verified financial transaction in the world by a major banking institution. The pilot deal between The Seychelles Trading Company Ltd. and Ornua saw the two companies harness a blockchain platform developed by Wave to trade a letter of credit. This transaction has to be Barclays’ most overt show of confidence in the potential of blockchain technology to deliver improved efficiencies in international trade. Also in this week’s African Tech Round-up, is a discussion Andile Masuku had with the Kenyan journalist, Eric Mugendi. Eric is Editor-at-large at iAfrikan.com, and also writes for his Tumbler called Kenyan Longreads. Eric joined Andile on the show to discuss the controversy that unfolded on Twitter around the African Tech Summit happening in London on September 29th. The event’s conspicuously mostly male non-black/non-African speaker list included folks many people in the Twitterverse did not feel were representative of Africa’s tech ecosystem, and also managed to leave out many worthy participants. Andile and Eric unpacked the issues at play. Music Credits: Music by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Music licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0

Turns out Ghana’s top cop— Inspector General of Police John Kudalor thinks that blocking social media access across the country might be necessary to ensure Ghana’s national security on election day in November 2016. Mr Kudalor reckons that Ghana might do well to learn from the example set by other countries on the continent and around the world that have take similar steps in the recent past— Uganda no doubt being top of mind. It's likely that the Inspector General’s comments might have been made to test public sentiment on the issue ahead of the polls. However, if the chill we're picking up on Twitter is anything to go by, Ghanaians don’t seem to be terribly concerned at the prospect of having to survive 24 hours or so without access to Facebook and Twitter come November 7th. Ah, well… Meanwhile, in place of our discussion segment on the African Tech Round-up this week, we feature part of a recent in-depth conversation Andile Masuku had with Stephen van Coller, who is the Chief Executive for Corporate and Investment Banking at Barclays Africa. Listen in to hear Stephen tell Andile how Barclays Plc’s imminent plans to shed its investments in Africa will impact the business he runs, and why he is confident that fintech startups on the continent will never completely disrupt incumbents within the financial services industry.
