This week on the Science for Sport podcast, host Richard Graves welcomes back Michael Carolan, a performance coach and subject lead in sport rehabilitation at the University of Salford. With nearly two decades of experience across elite sport, the military, and education, Michael shares a refreshingly honest and deeply practical perspective on what it really means to coach athletes through injury and recovery. Whether you're a coach, therapist, or performance practitioner, this episode offers a wealth of real-world insights you can apply immediately. In this episode, you'll learn: Why rehab should be treated as coaching, not just therapy How communication and trust are at the heart of effective injury recovery The mental toll of injury, and how to keep athletes feeling connected and valued Why protocols are useful, but experience and adaptability matter more How to “train around injury” and keep performance progressing The role of environment, load tolerance, and coaching cues in recovery How elite recoveries (like NFL star Aaron Rodgers') can mislead athletes Why Michael teaches his students to “get miles on the soul” through experience How to filter hype, stay objective, and build athlete autonomy Michael's no-nonsense, athlete-first approach is as insightful as it is relatable, combining science, coaching, and a human touch in every decision he makes. About Michael Carolan Michael Carolan is a highly experienced performance coach and academic specialising in sport rehabilitation. He is the Subject Lead and Programme Lead for Sport Rehabilitation at the University of Salford, where he teaches and mentors future practitioners while supporting clinical practice through partnerships with organisations like the PFA and Salford City Council. What do Cristiano Ronaldo, LeBron James... and astronauts have in common? They're all using the same training technology, blood flow restriction (BFR). In this episode, host Richard Graves back Dr. Warren Bradley, Chief Science Officer and founder of Hytro, to unpack how BFR is transforming the way athletes train, recover, and even how astronauts prepare for life in space. You'll learn: What blood flow restriction actually is, and how it helps build strength, muscle, and endurance faster (with less load on your body). Why BFR is no longer just for injury rehab, and how pro athletes are using it to boost performance and speed up recovery. The science behind why restricting blood flow (safely!) creates powerful training adaptations. How Warren's product ended up on a SpaceX rocket, and why NASA now uses BFR to fight muscle loss in space. Common myths and misconceptions about BFR… including whether it's safe (spoiler: it is, with the right approach). Where BFR is heading next, from grassroots athletes to medical rehab and even everyday gym-goers. Warren also shares his incredible journey, from working in the Premier League to founding a company used by over 260 elite teams worldwide, all the way to collaborating with NASA for space missions. This is one of those episodes that blends cutting-edge science with real-world application. Whether you're a coach, athlete, or just a performance fanatic, this one's a must-listen. Power your attraction with Gatemaster. Discover the future at Gatemaster.com.   Sondra Shannon is the Chief Executive Officer, and Jake Shannon is the Chief Growth Officer of Gatemaster Technology. With decades of combined experience in operations, business strategy, and technology, Sondra and Jake lead a company that has supported attractions for over 30 years. Gatemaster started as a point-of-sale software provider and has evolved into a full-service solutions partner for attractions of all sizes. In this interview, Sondra and Jake talk about performance coaching, revenue strategy, and technology integration. Performance Coaching “Success is your duty to make sure that your business is protected and that you are growing so that you have generations to pass this on to.” Jake shares how his exposure to performance coaching through Grant Cardone led to a transformational shift in both his personal and professional life. After becoming Cardone's top-ranked coach out of 700 worldwide, Jake applied high-performance business principles to Gatemaster, helping nearly double its revenue. Sondra was so inspired by the results that she and COO Tiffany Blair began their own coaching journey to better serve the attractions they work with. They believe that coaching—more than managing—is the key to unlocking growth, developing leaders, and driving revenue across the industry. Revenue Strategy “We increased revenue by $150,000 between March and May with no new capital investment or labor investment—just strategy.” One of the most impactful themes discussed was helping attractions rethink their revenue opportunities by packaging what they already offer in new ways. Sondra explains how creating family bundles, date night deals, and themed packages for a mini-golf client led to a major uptick in revenue with no added cost. By reframing how products are presented and communicating availability clearly (without feeling like an “upsell”), Gatemaster helps clients personalize the guest journey and maximize spend from the first interaction. Jumper's knee is often misunderstood and mismanaged. Rest and ice were traditionally recommended for jumper's knee, but this approach is outdated. Quad strength is crucial for recovery from jumper's knee. Deceleration is a significant factor in developing jumper's knee. Plyometric progressions must be approached carefully to avoid aggravating knee pain. Not all exercises are effective for everyone; individual responses vary. Eccentric loading is essential for tendon health and recovery. Leg extensions can be beneficial but may not work for everyone. There is no magical exercise for knee pain; a comprehensive approach is necessary. Sissy squats can be more effective than leg extensions. Eccentric loading is crucial for knee rehabilitation. Isometric exercises can help with jumper's knee recovery. Athletes often need to reduce sport-specific activities to heal. Pain management requires honest conversations with athletes. Frequency of training can impact recovery from knee injuries. Achilles injuries require careful management and progression. Partial tears in tendons can be challenging to rehabilitate. Cultural attitudes towards pain vary among athletes. Consistency in rehabilitation exercises leads to better outcomes.   Tim's Website: https://www.timrileytraining.com Tim's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/timrileytraining/?hl=en Coach Em Up Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coachemuppodcast/?hl=en Notes: https://jackedathlete.com/podcast-144-patellar-tendons-with-tim-riley/
