In 2009, Portland-based journalist Erika Bolstad's mother received a check in the mail from an oil company that was leasing mineral rights she had inherited in North Dakota. After her mother died, Bolstad embarked on a decade-long quest to uncover the history behind those rights, including the story of her great-grandmother Anna, who left little trace of her life as a homesteader in North Dakota in the early 1900s. In “Windfall,” Bolstad constructs a memoir revealing a tale of family tragedy and personal discovery that intersects with the boom and bust of oil derricks and natural gas flares dotting the Dakota prairies, and the price paid for the lure of riches trapped beneath the soil. Journalist and author Erika Bolstad joins us to talk about her new book, “Windfall: The prairie woman who lost her way and the great-granddaughter who found her.”

Tomasina Boone is the founder of The Curls and Natural Hair Beauty Place, a unique space that is the only service provider of it's kind in Sydney to provide a retail shop for great quality products and a beauty space dedicated to the care, maintenance, and styling of naturally curly hair.  As a former Essence Magazine Advertising Beauty Director, Tomasina moved to Sydney, Australia 15 years ago with her hubby (lawyer and former NAACP board member) and 1 year old daughter. When leaving the USA she was constantly asked two questions: one, are there any Black people there? And two, who is going to do your hair? Tomasina's hair was relaxed at the time so she thought nothing of it.  But years later, Tomasina finally went natural (begrudgingly) and her hair fell out. This inspired her to purchase an e-commerce business to supply imported products from the States for natural and curly hair. What started out as a business to support expats quickly expanded into a market and knowledge place for all kinds of clients and curly hair textures. In this conversation, Tomasina shares with Kiesha how her sense of self evolved through her changes in geography, career, and through her journey with her hair.Episode Resources:https://www.curlsandnaturalhair.com.au/Curls And Natural Hair (@curls_and_natural_hair) • Instagram photos and videosBooks: The Complete Conversations with God: An Uncommon Dialogue, Neale Donald Walsch In Search of Satisfaction, J California CooperFor Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf, Ntozake ShangeContact InfoWant Kiesha to host a YOU Better! experience for your team?
