Barry is also the co-host on the Geek Syndicate podcast, that takes a humorous look at pop culture. The success of the podcast led him to co-present two documentaries for the BBC. Welcome to the latest podcast on the Geek Syndicate Network.  We've had so much fun recording the Christmas game-show episodes over the last few years, we've decided to take the show on the road every three months.  Each episode of Battle Gods Of Pod will pit three contestants against each other in a series of games specifically designed to test their podcasting skills and geek knowledge.  The winner of each episode will go forward to the Christmas special for the ultimate showdown. Series 1 is hosted by Dion Winton-Polak.  This pilot episode features the well oiled muscles and silver tongues of Christophe Montoya, Barry Nugent and Phil Ambler.  Games include New Testaments, Speaking In Tongues, Convert The Masses and Gotterdammerung (as well as playing for time, playing hard to get and playing silly buggers.)   We would be happy to receive any and all constructive feedback on this podcast, as well as nominations and requests to join us in future episodes via e-mail at scrolls@hotmail.co.uk or @BattleGods_Pod if you prefer Twitter.  (Please note, for this first series we are sticking to podcasters within the Geek Syndicate family, but next year we will begin to welcome people from all other areas of geekdom.) Credits where credit's due:   If you discover somebody new and want to hear more from them after the show, track down their reviews and articles on our website, and also catch them on their own podcasts:   Christophe is one of the Trailer Trash Two, who analyse and discuss the latest happenings in the world of cinema.  He can be found on twitter @montoc1701 and hanging around street corners at peculiar hours   Barry delves into pretty much every pot on the Geek Syndicate podcast, but can also be found intermittently on The Next Level and Geek To Geek.  He can be e-mailed atthegeeks@geeksyndicate.co.uk tweeted @GeekSyndicate or thrown money at www.unseenshadows.com   Phil joins Dion on Scrolls, the podcast for literary geekdom chatting about Fantasy, SF and Horror books more or less monthly.  (Ok, less.)  He can be abused on twitter @Phlambler but he'd really prefer to have a friendly chat.   Dion runs a Book Group alongside of Scrolls, and tries to pop up in other places where he can.  Bit of a slag, really.  You can molest him on Twitter @Dion_Scrolls or e-mail him atscrolls@hotmail.co.uk if you prefer privacy. The music we use is called 'Battle Gods of the Universe.'  It is performed by Domine and comes from their album 'Emperor Of The Black Runes' (which you can purchase at all reputable retailers)   Incidental sound effects all come from freesound, which is a fabulous resource.  As per their regulations, the sounds used in this episode are listed below, along with their originators. Time is ticking away, the latest 'normal' episode in in editorial limbo and we haven't yet recorded our usual Christmas mayhem, so here's another Book Group episode to keep you all going.  The Heroes could perhaps be described as Sharpe's Waterloo done fantasy-style.  Joe Abercrombie uses it to explore the subject of heroism with all its wrinkles and contradictions.  Set in the same world as the acclaimed First Law Trilogy, Abercrombie introduces a whole new batch characters in such a way that enables new readers to get straight into it, whilst rewarding long-time fans with a few familiar faces.  If you haven't read his stuff before, we're talking a gritty fantasy adventure, full of dark humour and harsh justice.  The focus is always on the characters (a particular strength of this author), with vigorous prose and a suitably cynical tone. We recommend you read the book before listening to this episode as Spoilers were pretty much unavoidable.  The programme is hosted by Scrolls regulars Dion and Clover, who are joined by Geek Syndicate's very own Barry Nugent and long-time listener Louise Maskill.  Louise is an avid reader of Fantasy fiction, works as a free-lance editor and has just published her own book about Sussex Dialect (with a similar Norfolk one on the way.)  She is currently working on her first novel.  Publishers, take note. If you want to carry on the conversation, you can post your comments, thoughts and alternative viewpoints under this article.  We welcome your feedback.  Taking a leaf from the Comic Book Outsiders, we're actually going to start letting you all know in advance what books are coming up.  (Yes, we have been THAT stupid)  With that in mind, you may wish to pick up or re-read American Gods by Neil Gaiman in time for our February episode.  We always like to involve YOU in the book group, so let us know if you want to take part in that episode.  Don't fancy that one?  Then put on your thinking cap and send us the name of the book you would like to discuss.  You can e-mail us directly at scrolls@hotmail.co.uk or tweet @Dion_Scrolls if you prefer.  Who knows, it could be you joining us in the May Book Group.
